How To Hold Your Camera for Sharp Photos + Auto ISO - Fujifilm X100V - 2022
Poor technique is one of the biggest reasons for blurry pictures. I’ll show you how to hold your camera to get sharp photos. And I’ll also show you how to set up the Auto ISO feature for Fujifilm digital cameras. This will make your life easier by locking in your highest ISO and slowest shutter speed for sharp hand-held photos. These techniques will also work with other digital cameras, like Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, and Ricoh.

Great video Paul. I've got an X-T2, X100F, 14/2.8, 18/2, 27/2 Voightlander and 56/1.2. Mostly these are old lenses and as you say they've great. Second hand (with care and a little research) is the way to go. New stuff is crazily expensive and not that much better.
I hear you about finding good deals on used gear, especially if you are a hobbist. Although, I will get the new 16-55 f2.8 MK II soon. That is the lens I wanted from Fuji for years. The older one was too big and defeated the purpose of mirrorless. Thanks for your comments! Have fun taking pix!
I agree to stick with the Fuji except the Voigtländer 27mm f2 Ultron and the 18mm f 2.8 Color-Skopar; great on the Fuji X-T5! My other lenses are the Fuji 23mm f2 the Fuji 35mm f1.4 and now also the 56mm f1.2 but I bought the old version that is a bit lighter and cheaper used instead of the 50mm f2 new for the same price because it looks to clear for my eyes the 56mm is 85mm and its more a character lens like my Voigtländer and the Fuji 35mm f1.4 what is currently my favourite lens 😎📷
Thank for your comments. Those compact lenses are great. I hate lugging gear around. I hear you about the 56. I own the 50 f2, which is has much better AF. I use them in different situations. There is a difference in the look between the two. The 56's images are just so sweet. Have fun taking pix!
@@PaulCrousePhoto Thank you! I do always. Photography is somehow my therapy! 🙂
Hey great video. I don’t own either of the two cameras. I’m looking to buy one tho. Personally I find the x100T images much better in terms of color rendition and they look more alive to me, more 3D. Also the flaring I believe is something beautiful rather than a flaw. I think most people who own this kind of camera use it for artistic work, so imho imperfections are welcome!
@fabiosaughtser Thanks for your comment. After having this camera for a couple of more years since made this video, I can say the X100V is hands down better than the old camera. The sensor is excellent. The electronics are up-to-date. The lens is MUCH better. The AF is much better. It feels more solid and responsive. I like the colors. And I really like the flippy screen. I think upgrading every other generation is a good tactic.
How did you come to base yourself in Japan Paul? Isn`t language a problem? I love Munich having worked there for a year, but would struggle professionally without a very good command of the language. John Deehan Photographer in London.
Hey John, Thanks for your question. Yes, language is a huge problem. Japanese is very difficult. My niche market is foreign tourists. I make my living because I am a native English speaker who has lived here 30 years. I do other work in the tourism industry. Japan is not like Europe. It is mono-ethnic and English is not widely spoken. I couldn't compete with the Japanese photographers. It is dog-eat-dog amongst them.
I am looking for a travel companion lens which is sharp and solid. Sigma 10-18, Fuji 10-24 or this one, which one you would recommend?
I can't speak about the other lenses, because I haven't used them. The advantage of the Fujifilm 14mm is it's size and excellent glass -- it's sharp with no distortion. It think it is solid, although the aperture ring is kind of loose on my copy. The downside is less framing options than a zoom. I think less in more when traveling. I really don't want to carry to much. I should be having fun carrying a heavy bag. I don't own a super wide angle zoom, if that tells you something.
A lens so nice i had to buy it twice. I think it makes a great contrasting pair with the 35/1.4 - a dreamy, smooth lens with a bit of whimsical personality, and this - precise, clean and realistic. It's also far lighter and more compact than the celebrated 16/1.4, and because I shoot a lot in Infrared - this lens is optically as perfect as it can get before you spend ludicrous sums of money.
Yes, the glass on this lens is wonderful.
Hello, I saw a few reviews saying that when focusing, this lens will make a motor sound similar to the 35f1.4, is this true?
Yes, the AF motor makes a sound. It is not loud, but it's there. It has never bothered me. The AF on this lens is not so fast -- but I use this for stationary portraits, not sports, so it's ok for me. The glass on the lens is wonderful. It is an excellent portrait lens. I used mine yesterday for a gig. You can find great used deals on this lens.
I think as new iterations of the X-Trans sensor are released they get further away from the analogue filmic feel of the original. I like the idiosyncrasys of the older cameras they give more character which tends to be missing from digital photography.
Thanks for your comment. The more I use my X100V, the more I love it. The AF is way better -- and so is the lens. I love the flippy screen and I like the files that come out of it. Tech moves forward. I really wish I could use AirDrop from my camera to my devices. That would be a huge upgrade for me -- but Apple will never do that. If the older cameras work for you, then great. I am still using several of the 1st generation lenses.
Aside from the field of view, does this lens have the same characteristics as the Moment Lens Wide V2 and the lens character ?
I can’t comment since I know nothing about the Moment Lens Wide V2.
Just found this channel looking at your 56mm f1.2 review! Love it! Subscribed !
as a starter im looking to have three ISO settings for my X100V. what would you suggest?
@KelvyGoveo Here is how I have my Auto ISO set up: Auto-1 Default 160; Max Sensitivity 6400; Min Shutter Speed 1/125. Auto-2 Default 160; Max Sensitivity 3200; Min Shutter Speed 1/125. Auto-3 Default 160; Max Sensitivity 1600; Min Shutter Speed 1/125. Basically, I just use AUTO-1. I think 1/125 of a second is a good all around shutter speed. It will stop most people if they are walking. Go higher you shoot people moving around a lot. 6400 ISO is as high as I will go with this camera. If you find 6400 has too much noise, the drop it down to 3200 ISO. Test his out for yourself. See what works best for you. I am often testing out my equipment to see what works best. I keep notes in my phone for settings in different situations. Good luck!
@@PaulCrousePhoto thank you. when started using the camera someone suggested to have a Auto 1 for sunny environments, Auto 2 for overcast or indoor, and Auto 3 for night or low light indoor and I thought that was a good idea, but I like your idea of having one for all around that way I dont have to worry about changing much. great tip on note taking!
@@KelvynGoveo Everybody has their own way of doing things. I try to keep the tech stuff as simple as possible so that I can concentrate on composition and timing. Automation is great, but the key is to know when to override it -- and that comes from making lots of mistakes and learning from them. With this camera, it is easy to override auto by simply turning a dial. Just put it back to your default posiiton when you're done.
@@PaulCrouse love it- thank you so much!
I live in high humidity area i did the mistake of not taking much care. Result moist inside this lens and i get very low contrast when pointing at the light source
Oh no! I am sorry to hear that. Can you see mold inside the lens? If so, then it is probably ruined. If it is just moisture inside the lens, try it out; it might be fine. I also live in a very humid place. I bought a dehumidifying cabinet to protect my camera gear. I had to throw away a couple of lenses in the past because they got moldy.
Fuji really needs to update this lens after 12 Years.
Yup, but I doubt that they will. I don't think they sold many of these.
This was absolutely brilliant THANK YOU for sharing your wisdom. I have an x100t but am a complete novice. I have always wanted to do nighttime shots in the city. Slowly but surely I’m learning how that’s possible. Thanks for the inspiration!
Great! I am glad it was helpful for you!
Thanks
You're welcome.
I love my 56mm f1.2❤ Never will sell it!
Me, too! Although I might get the upgraded version at some point.
Would you still say the same about some of the new Viltrox lenses?
I don't use any Viltrox lenses, so I don't have any specific opinion on them (and don't think about them). In general, I think it is better to get manufacturer-brand lenses over third-party lenses if you can afford them. I am still using this 56mm lens and I still think it is awesome. It is a great deal on the used market.
100%. Just came back to Oz from Roppongi, Ginza and Okinawa. Probably used the 14mm for 90% of pics on my XT2. Keep it level and it works brilliantly. It is an essential piece of kit.
Great! I am glad to hear it!
i ordered mine quite cheap from Japan, i like it, but somehow use it way to rarely 😢
Hey Martin. Thanks for your comment. Well... how about just putting it on the camera and leave you other lenses at home? ;)
I prefered the T on every image
Thanks for your comment, Stay. I have had the the X100V for two years now and I can say that it is a way better camera that the old one. The much better lens, the faster autofocus and the flippy screen make it much better for me. At first, I didn't like the color palette, but I go used to it. Of course, your millage may vary.
I love the shots at f2. I’ve been shooting the 35mm f1.4 at f2 a lot lately and I swear that aperture creates better images than at f1.4 - the right blend of sharpness and background blur (and easier to have your subject in focus). It looks to be a similar situation with the 56mm.
Hey @stefan33uk It is great that you have found the sweet spot with your lens. It can take time to figure it out. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks, Nate. Marketing hype is -- well -- hype. You don't always need the latest and greatest. Make no mistake, having the right tools helps immensely -- especially since photography is a gear-based endeavor. Spend a few more bucks to buy a good quality hammer and it will last a lifetime.
Where have you been; you have been missed.
Hey @erosario64. Thanks for your kind comment. I have been busy running my business. There never seems to be enough time in the day. I want to get back to making videos, but I paying the bills comes first. Seriously, your comment give me encouragement.
Well, stay safe and God bless.
Great video, so much for the old sensors being so much better. I have fun with my x100S but the V an VI I'm sure blow it away.
Thanks for your comment, Mark. Yeah, the more I use my V the more I like it. The files are amazing. The lens is, too.
really great video that goes to your logic... not just a lens review, thank you
Thanks! I am glad it was helpful for you.
Wish you would make more videos. Love your energy.
Thanks @erosario64. I had to focus on my business this past year. I do hope to make videos again relatively soon.
Hey hi! How did you mount a pentax lens on x100t ?
Hey Filippornd! That is not a Pentax lens. It is a Pentax lens HOOD. It is the smallest lens hood I could find that does the job. I want to keep this camera as small as possible, but I always use a lens hood to shade the lens and protect it.
@PaulCrousePhoto thank you for your reply. This mad me crazy, I'm searching for this pentax that fit to x100t hahaha
Paul, I truly appreciate you taking the time to show comparisons between the T and V. I’ve owned a T for some 8 or 9 years and I still don’t feel the need to upgrade to a newer version of the camera. Mainly because it would cost me about $1200 out of pocket after I sold my Fuji T. My T has less than 1500 shots so obviously I’ve used it sparingly having other cameras. Still I feel Fuji knocked it out of the park with the X100 line, and I hope they continue to support it with upgrades!❤
Hey @pnojazz. Thanks for your comment. I am glad you still like your camera. There is definately no need to upgrade if your current camera is still working well for you.
My T has 1200 shots on it!😂
@pnojazz. Have you gotten to 1201 yet?
This was exactly what I was looking for. You have a new subscriber! It's an added bonus that I've spent many weeks in Kyoto and know these stunning spots well. Fantastic!
Thanks, Joel!
@jopeldcb5304 Great! I am glad that you've liked my videos. I hope to get back to making more reasonably soon. I had to focus more on my business this past year.
I absolutely love the shot at 8:38. Well done :)
Thank you very much. I am glad you like it!
Great review cheers Paul, lovely Images too. I did some research so this confirms my choice. I just modified an XPro-2 to shoot infrared love it but the lens I have is the 23mm which can be a tad tight for me, examples on my channel, so the 14mm will be awesome, it also performs well re. limited IR hot spotting, from what I've read that's only lightly noticeable after F/11. I bought a used 14mm just now for a great price happy as larry. cheers liked and subbed.
Hey Paul. Great! I am glad my video was helped you make a good gear choice. Have fun with it!
can't wait mate gonna do some damage with that thing haha @@PaulCrousePhoto
I’m so torn on this lens. I have the APD version and I almost never use it. After taking it for a spin the other day I was disappointed by how often it missed focus. I know my version can only use contrast AF, which makes it worse, but it was still disappointing. I would try to focus on groups of leaves on a tree (I don’t do portraits, just nature stuff) and it would constantly focus beyond those leaves to something in the background that was visible through small openings between the leaves. When I came home and realized so many shots weren’t focused where I wished (the photos weren’t completely ruined) I was disappointed and I wished I had just taken my much cheaper fully manual 50mm lens instead. I know I can get focus exactly where I want with manual focus. (Sorry for the long rambling and uninteresting story. :P) I have a question, do you still believe in not buying 3rd party? Because there are some amazing ones out now. Like the Viltrox 75mm 1.2. It’s one of my favorite lenses because it has good AF (better than my 56mm), it has weather sealing, it’s sharp and has almost no chromatic aberration even at f1.2 (less CA than even the 90mm). All that for under $600 if I recall. I’m not affiliated with that company at all, It doesn’t matter to me if you use it or not, but since you’re a professional portrait photographer, I’m wondering if it would suit you? It does have an af on-off switch, which can be annoying for a Fuji user, and there is a bit of vignetting, but it’s still amazing imo.
Hi just_eirik. Thanks for your comments. In regard to buying original manufacturer's lenses vs third party -- I still go with the original manufacturer's stuff because I want to have confidence that my gear is going to work out in the field. So far, I have had pretty good luck with Fujifilm equipment. Thank you for the suggestion. I may change my mind. Recently, I bought a Fujifilm 50mm f2 lens, and I like it a lots. It is small, sharp with fast AF. I like the small lenses.
@@PaulCrousePhoto Yeah sometimes you just want some small light lenses, they can be very fun to use precisely because of their small size, I think.
What’s the brand of your x100t hand Grip?
Hey Trip -- I don't have that camera anymore. If I remember correctly, it was the original Fujifilm grip MHG-X100.
Cool thanks Paul
My 50 years of experience says, I agree!!!
Thanks Senior Ranger!
Don't worry so much about the shutter count, you're not even halfway there.
I have since sold this camera and bought an X100V, which I love.
Great video Thank you Paul
You are welcome. Thanks for your kind words.
I purchased the Zeiss 50 2.8 which is a 1-1 macro and intend I to use it also as a portrait lens. But I am torn since I have another macro (1.5 - 1) and sense that the 56 is a better choice. Not sure expecting a lens to do two entirely different types of shots is the best way to approach branching out into a new discipline.
Hey Sandbilly. Thanks for your comment. My suggestion is to try taking some portraits with the Zeiss 50mm. From my understanding, it is an excellent lens. Try to get comfortable with it. If you find that its limitations get in the way, then consider the other lens.
Thank you for the video. I'll be visiting Kyoto in April. I like the photos you shared in the video, you are a very good photographer. Great work.
Hey Ron, thanks for your kind words. Have fun on your visit to Kyoto. Say "hi" if you happen to see me out and about. I am 6'5"/197cm tall, so I tend to be noticeable. ;)
I certainly will look for you. That would be a joyful moment for sure!
May I know which brand of hand grip you are using?
I use the hand grip JJC HG-X100V for my X100V. I bought it on Amazon.
10-24/4 35/2 50/2 Flash That's my bag after 15 years of shooting. Similar to yours though for wide angle I find zoom to be more useful. I didnt like the AF on 35/1.4 and imagine the 56 to be equally unreliable. I mainly shoot children now and rely on focus tracking (the times of single focus point + recompose are behind me). Haven't given the 56 a try for this reason alone.
Thank you for your comment. Yup, you have to have a good AF system to take pix of kids. I am glad you found gear that works for you.
I traded the 14 for 10-24 . I didnt like switching between 14 and 23 primes. 10-24 is my travel / landscape lens. Great for getting close to people too. Not for shooting portraits but getting the action.
Thanks for your comment. I am glad that you found a lens that works well for what you do. Have fun shooting!
I think this is one of the most forgotten Fuji lenses. I almost forgot having one. After some years I am using it again on my XT5.
Yup. It is still a great lens. Thanks for your comment.
That was an absolutely wonderful video presentation. Thank you so much.😊
Thanks!
Love the images. Love your commentary. What film simulations do you use?
Thanks @govindrajanv5857. Most of the time I use Provia. Sometimes I'll use Velvia for things like autumn colors.
Stunning images. Inspirational stuff! makes me want to go buy that lens 😄
Thanks! It is a great piece of glass, although the loose aperture ring can annoy me. See if you can get an excellent quality used one. That would be good deal.
@@PaulCrousePhoto Thanks Paul. Got a used one for a good deal. Love it.
@@grv2508 That's what I like to hear!
3:02 indonesian ?
I finally sold it. It's undoubtly a nicely built, beautiful lens. What bothered me, the slow, inaccurate AF. The loose aperture ring and wide focus ring gives almost no space for grabbing the lens when attaching it on camera. The slight glow at 1.2 might be nice for close ups, but when you really need 1.2 for example for nice separation in full length portraits its just not very sharp.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. That will help other people decide if this lens is right for them.
Kicked mine in the river yesterday 😢. Looking if there might be a better replacement. Seems I will buy this piece again. Now. Immediately. Can’t live without this.
Oh man! That sucks! (Although, it is better that it died in field being used instead getting moldy in a drawer). It is pretty addicting. Great glass with in a small package. I hope can find a good one.
