Hi Cory. Thanks for your comment. The biggest challenge is getting the folks in to the right locations -- especially places that don't have too many other tourists. These gigs are usually a combination for tour guiding and a photo shoot. I try to have a short phone conversation in the booking process to find out what the clients are looking for -- as opposed to just clicking an automated booking online. This makes a huge difference. What people imagine in their head about a famous tourist city like Kyoto is much different than the reality -- mainly because of the sometimes insane crowds. I usually end up talking them out of their original idea and take them to not famous locations which are actually better. The actual shooting is rather straight forward. Get them out of the direct sun, engage them in light hearted conversation to relax them. And then shoot. Actually, the camera is lower on the scale of importance. Any competent camera will do. The X-T1 has great color jpegs straight out of the camera, and that is why I use it. I hope that is helpful for you.
Hi Cory. I apologize for my tardy reply. Thanks for your comment. That could be a very good video idea. I will put it on my list. The short version: Have the right gear and know how to use it. It should be second nature and not get in the way. Location, location, location. Have a good place with many possible backgrounds out of the direct sun. The most difficult part is interacting with people. Most folks are very self-conscious about getting professional pictures taken. I do my best to put them at ease. I try to have fun. Most people look good when they are having fun. I hope that helps.

Thanks, Bill. The Fujifilm jpegs are really good. That is one of the big reasons I use these cameras. As for upgrading, there is always the newer thing. I just use my stuff until it breaks and then buy what I need. I usually buy l the previous year's model because it is cheaper and just as good -- unless there is something that will actually help me do my work more efficiently.

Kyoto is a special place, but it is also a large Japanese city. LIke anywhere else, it has its good and bad points. I like living among such wonderful history. It is not nearly as huge as Tokyo or Osaka, which makes it very livable for me. But Japanese cities are also very cramped, dense, and crowded. In the last few years before the pandemic, the mass tourism had become overwhelming and many locals were getting fed up with it -- just like in Venice and Iceland. If you come to visit Kyoto, I highly suggest coming in May or October. These are the best times for weather and are not peak season (which are April and November).
Your comment on the X-100 cameras being less intimidating is 100% on point. I kinda have to use my X-T3 and 90mm for corporate headshot work but before the world fell apart I was doing online dating profile shoots primarily with my X-100f and the teleconverter. The people I photographed, who were not models, quickly forgot the camera was even there. They were usually more fascinated by me rigging lights to street signs and in other odd places since you need a permit for light stands in NYC. That leads to the really great thing about the X-100 series many people forget or simply don't know. The leaf shutter does amazing things outdoors when paired with even small speedlights. I still brought my X-T20 and a zoom along, typically the kit lens for tighter shots, though it spent the majority of a shoot in my bag.
I didn't know about light stands in NYC, but it is not surprising. Here in Kyoto, there is no law but lots and lots and lots of unwritten rules. Light stands and reflectors bring out little old guys in security uniforms. The X100 cameras keep them at bay. I try to look like a tourist.

I hear what you are saying about the X100 series cameras. People simply feel more relaxed. It is interesting about the lighting kits on the streets in NYC. Here in Japan, there aren't laws per se, but as soon as you put up a light stand, someone comes out to chase you away -- except on a few public streets. Some Chinese tour companies were selling wedding packages that included photo shoots that looked like movie productions. They'd just plop down tons of gear on a city street. These really upset local folks, and there was a clampdown. Using a camera like an X100V makes it easier to fly under the radar. I am 6'5" and American, so I can't blend in. But not annoying the people you see every day helps make life easier.

I agreed with much of your logic & common sense regarding photography: 📸 with what you have , spend less time correcting your 📸 on the computer & Fuji 📷 are great regardless of generations, sensors, models…stop obsessing over 📷, just go out & 📸. I found it irritating when RUclipsrs are either ever changing gears or swear by a particular brand 📷as being the ultimate. You are breath of fresh air. Love your channel. I got an x100v and am on cloud 9 while taking pictures. Fuji jpegs and the velvia film simulation is the ultimate . The sharpness rendered by the lens literally blows my mind away.

Great video and nice shots! Kyoto is such a wonderful place. I recently moved with my wife to Osaka where she's from. I can't wait to explore the area more. We've started with Olympus and Panasonic M4/3 systems about 10 years ago then switched to Nikon APS-C but we missed the smaller form factor of M4/3. We switch to Fuji in 2019 and haven't looked back. I started with an X-T30 and my wife had an X-E2s. I now use an X-T4 and X100V and my wife has the X-T30 and X-E4 that replaced her E2s that I now regret giving away. Hope to see more videos and your work. Always inspiring to see beautiful work done with the X system. Best wishes and keep up the good work!

I loved this video! I come from shooting full frame and it’s been fun learning the Fuji system. I especially love how you use older Fuji gear. I have both an X-T4 and an X-T2. I’d love to see you on a low light or night time shoot talking about your process with the X-T2!
Thanks for you comment and your video idea, Robert. I am a very beginner at making RUclips videos. Soon, I hope to get outside and do some video shooting. I am still working out how to do it best being a one-man-band. But I have written down your suggestion along with the other great suggestions I have gotten from other viewers. I quick tip: Scout out a location during the daytime that you think might be good a night. Then come back later with minimal gear and a tripod. Shoot in Manual. With ISO in Manual at a low setting. Set your aperture to around f8 and your shutter to a very slow speed, below one second. Look at he back screen to help you figure out which one. Write down your settings, because that is a good starting point. See if helps you get started.
This was great Paul! Kyoto is my favorite city in the whole world so I envy that you get to live there and shoot the city every day. I'd love to see how you approach general everyday photography or street photography. You've got a knack for these videos and I love the enthusiasm and realness (whatever that means)! Like the fact that you use older Fujifilm gear. There are some really talented photographers on RUclips but every video seems to be a new camera or a new lense. I have an X-T3 and an X-T4 but my go to camera is the X-H1 it is bigger and heavier than the other two and I have thought about selling it more than once. But I just keep going back to it. It just feels right when I am using it.
Hi Eric. Well, RUclips promotes consumption. Sell, sell, sell. People who make money off of RUclips do it by promoting current products. Of course, lots of photographers keep their equipment up to date because that is good business sense for them. As for your XH1, use whatever feels good for you. I helped someone with a DSLR with the PSAM dial the other day and it was very frustrating to use because I have gotten used to using mirrorless screens and dials. I have an X-T4, but I’ve heard by many how amazing the X-T2 is still to this day. I used to shoot Nikon, but after getting the X-T4, I can’t go back. It fits my needs. The 18-55mm is the absolute best kit lens ever.
Hi Daniel. Thanks for your comment. I TOTALLY understand about "can't go back." I was working with a workshop client the other day who was using a DSLR. It was really frustrating to use. She looked at the flippy screen on my camera and said: "Wow, you can see everything on the back screen!" Then I showed her you can see the exposure changes right on the screen and she wanted one right away. LOL! The XT-2 is a great bang for the buck. It doesn't have the video capabilities of the XT-4, but I get great images from it. And I love the flippy screen. Have fun taking pictures!
@@PaulCrousePhoto ahh that’s awesome seeing peoples reactions to things they didn’t know about with photography. Something so simple, yet going back to relying on the exposure meter with the DSLRs isn’t something I can go back to relying on. Yeah I’ve heard people say they actually prefer the X-T2 images over the X-T3/4. I’m not a seasoned Fuji shooter to know, but the fact that the older cameras hold their own weight that well is amazing.

Unless you have a good relationship with the actual business owner, you won't be able to film inside someone's store. Hi Paul. First time I 've seen your video, thanks for your input. I am a senior ,retired hobby photographer & my first Fuji a couple of years ago was a Fuji X-T3.I am so glad to see that another photographer is a jpeg shooter. Nothing against raw , & will try it sometime. Trying to teach myself how to use Capture One for Fuji. You can't admit these days that your primary photography is jpeg in aperture priority most of the time. The Fujistas will get you ! lol! I am very happy with my 18-55, 35 f2 & recently acquired 70-300. I also recently purchased a very hard to come by (in Canada) a Fuji X-E4, my grab & run out the door camera.Minimalistic to many, I have it set up the way I like to use it, all is good, no menu diving. New subscriber too.

You can admit what ever you want. If other people don't like it, that is their problem. Most people that get upset about silly things like that really don't know what they are talking about, but they think they do. (Which is pretty much true of everything online.) Photography (and the world) is not about dogma. People have different philosophies on how to do things, and that is fine. I think is good to hear different ideas. There is so much to learn. What matters is the image and if you can consistently create excellent images. How you get there is your business. I use Program Mode a lot of the time. (Blasphamy!!! Ha ha ha!). Hey Tim. Thanks for your comment. I try to buy my cameras from the local Naniwa camera store on Shijo Street in Kyoto. I like to support local businesses. I have shopped there for more than 20 years and they know me. If not, I buy used gear online from Map Camera in Tokyo. They are very trustworthy and efficient. I will sometimes buy new gear from Yodobashi Camera, although their prices are high, but they have everything. Before the pandemic, I would sometimes go hunting for used gear in Umeda and Namba in Osaka. (I have no affiliation with any of these stores). If you search EYExplore (who I do work with), on their blog are a couple of good posts about used camera stores in Tokyo. Useful info. There are quite a few shops on the westside of Shinjuku Station. Happy gear hunting!

Hey Brendon. Thanks for your comment. XT1's used to be dirt cheap used here in Japan. I just checked in Tokyo and the prices have gone back up -- but still a great deal if you can find an "excellent" or better condition one. The jpeg colors are really nice on those sensors.

At the moment, I don't know of any Tokyo camera shops that sell used cameras overseas (There might be some, but just don't know which). If you are in the U.S., I have had good luck buying used gear from KEH, but I haven't bought anything from them in several years and I don't know if they are still good or not. I am sorry, I don't know where to buy used cameras in other countries. Make sure to do your home work before you buy used gear online.
@@PaulCrousePhoto Oh, most definitely Paul! I always, have always researched greatly before purchasing photo equipment. Comes from my training back in the 70’s when I worked at a camera store here in Bermuda. KEH, did have one, but I couldn’t get it at the time. Surely the Fujifilm company over there in Japan have some in there great vault for future reference, and they can send a free one to a loyal Fuji fan 😁 I purchased a Fuji pro 5 brand new a few years ago that was one of the best digital cameras I’ve ever had. It has a Nikon D200 body and lens mount, but the system inwardly is Fuji. I still have it, but it only works with the AC cord. If I don’t find or get the XT-1, I’ll probably go with the XH-1. A few of them still around. Take care from photographers here in Bermuda 🙋🏽♂️

My kit is very similar to yours. I am a younger generation photographer and I think this gear preforms very well up to this date and it looks absolutely amazing. I dont care it is outdated, it can still produce awesome images. Thanks for the video and good luck with your channel.

I recently bought a X-S10, 18-55 and 70-300. After carrying a Nikon DSLR and three lenses on trips for the last 15 yrs, this light trio of Fuji camera and lenses is pure joy. What struck me about your video is that you shoot JPG and not RAW, I'll have to try that. Thanks for the education.
Hi Wayne. Thanks for your comment. Shooting jpeg forces you to get the picture right in the camera, rather than fixing it in post. I think by forcing myself to be diligent when I take the picture, I end up with better shots. I sometimes need to pull up the shadows a little in post with Fujifilm jpegs in some situations, but it is just a very little tweek. Good luck!
I started out much the same as you. F3 Nikon shooting editorial work. Unfortunately I don't live an work in Japan. Good for you. Still have some Nikon gear I use for sports photography a D500, D750 and for that my go to lens is a 70-200. Recently got into the Fuji system with a XT 3. Currently have a 16x55 2.8 and a 90mm f2 and use this camera mainly for outdoor portrait work. Enjoyed your video, all the best to you.

Back in the 80s I was shooting with a Ricoh film camera. Last year after a long research period I finally bought a barely used X-T3 with the 18-55. It's been a lot of fun. I would kill to have a giant sandwich at a real Jewish deli in NYC right now. It was one of the first things I did the last time I was there. Funnily enough, I sat at the counter next to a Japanese businessman. He was surprised to that I spoke Japanese. When they served our sandwiches, he wondered how eat such a giant sandwich. He was about to use a knife and a fork (shocking!). So , I showed him the proper technique. LOL.
Ex-Wire shooter myself, and like you, I cut my photographic teeth back in the 80s, though at the time I was shooting with Canon gear, but I did own a number of the “de rigueur” Domke F2 bags (after all what self respecting 1980s PJ would be caught without one of Jim’s bags slung over their shoulders…? 😉) Fast forward to 2017, after being laid off from a local rag (frankly it was a blessing in disguise), I began to dump my Canon gear and honestly toyed with the idea of leaving photography altogether, I was burned out. After a year or so, that desire to get back out there and start shooting again returned with a vengeance. However, I did not want to be burdened with another massive arsenal of glass and heavy bodies, I wanted to keep it small, light and loose. A buddy of mine let me borrow one of his Fujis…(X-E2 s/ with the 18-55mm), I was hooked. The money that I made selling off my Canon gear a year earlier, easily covered the costs of an X-Pro 2, X-T2/with booster (bought the X-E2s from my friend), as well as a 50-140, 3 Fujichrons (35mm, 16mm, 56mm), 10-24mm, and the 18-55mm and a Nissin flash, with a lot of change leftover. As for future purchases, like many I get the occasional “G.A.S.” attack but it usually passes (though I did indulge an picked up the X-Pro 3, what can I say, I am a sucker for ranger finder “styled’ cameras), though my workhorse X-T2 is getting a bit long-in-the-tooth, so I am looking forward to the possible release of an X-T5, just as long as it is not made or assembled in China (the reason that I passed on the X-T3/4 releases) Oh…I still have my original Domke F2 from 1987, it is beat all to hell, but I still employ it from time-to-time. @@PaulCrousePhoto I’m going to chime in here. I bought the X100V over the XPro3 because I was concerned with the folded shut rear screen. Changed out my Sony A7iii for a Canon R5 and the screen is folded shut and changed out my X100V for the XT4 and yep.. rear screen folded shut. Like you I prefer Made in Japan always. I feel like there’s some spirit of the craftsman put into the object. It’s a shame the new lenses are made In Phillipines. Not because it’s not a good lens but it doesn’t have that “magic” from Made in Japan stuff.
Hi Paul - I love your videos. I have been drawn to fill my bag with Sigma's and Tamron's, but watching your video was cathartic. I have XT3 + XT100 + XT1 with 14/2.8, 56/1.2 and 35/1.4 - I have used F100 + F3 +FM2 with 20/4.0 + 24/2.8 + 27/2.8 and 85/2.0 as a school photographer; the set is mine. Long live EBAY when I used to stay up to outbid others :) I do love my Nikon gear. FYI, I have got a lens adapter to use Nikon lenses on Fuji X bodies. Thank you!

10-24/4 35/2 50/2 Flash That's my bag after 15 years of shooting. Similar to yours though for wide angle I find zoom to be more useful. I didnt like the AF on 35/1.4 and imagine the 56 to be equally unreliable. I mainly shoot children now and rely on focus tracking (the times of single focus point + recompose are behind me). Haven't given the 56 a try for this reason alone.
Thanks for sharing. I love Fujifilm cameras. My XT2 shutter button just gave up, stuck at half-pressed. Most of my memory in Japan was captured by XT2 and XT20. I really want to go to Japan again after these travel restrictions. Hope you continue to share more videos.

Pro travel tip: the best times to come to Japan are May after the first week (which the Golden Week holidays) or in October. The weather is great and you can avoid the tourist hoards of April and November. I think May is the best because the gardens are fully in bloom and the weather is perfect. Hi Russ. Thanks for your comment and your video idea. In the mean time, what film simulation are you using? What kind of pictures are taking? I suggest taking one film simulation, like Provia/Standard, and experimenting with the "Color" settings in the "Q" menu. Do a controlled test. Find a location to take your pictures. Pick one subject and put your camera on a tripod, if you can. A manually set the iso, shutter speed and aperture, so they don't change. Then take a series of photos of this same scene, changing the "Color" setting from +4 to -4 for each frame. Then look at the pictures in the computer. Which one do you like the best. Then start taking some photos with that "Color" setting to see if you like it. If not, do that same thing with a different film simulation. It is a rather tedious process, but it is a good way to find out what exactly your camera can do. Remember to change only one thing at a time. I hope this helps.

Truly awesome! Like you, I used Nikon and Fuji back in the film days and now use an EM10 Mkii, primarily with a Sigma 30 2.8 DN Art lens and for portraits I love their 56mm 1.4 lens. I believe keeping it simple and light . I’m not getting any younger . I found my old Pentax with a zoom gave me neck ache after touring with it daily across Europe . That was when I realised I needed something a lot lighter and smaller . I have the big Billingham bag from the film days that carried at one time a 6x6, a compact , two SLR bodies and an assortment of lenses. Boy, was that a weight to lug around . I also enjoyed 5x4 - who wouldn’t ha ha. I avoid over processing and transfer most files to the phone to process in Snapseed and then post off in to Photobooks , of which I do several each year. I have a cellar of negs that do not see the light and among them are some of the images that I presented to the Photographers Gallery back in the day . My interests are primarily the grandchildren and street , the latter I do more on my phone when I can escape from childcare duties . I work on the principle that I photography for myself and choose subjects that put a smile on my face. One of my favourite haunts is coffee shops where clients are drinking and chatting away . I really must do a book on that theme one day , as many of those establishments change over time . Anyway, thanks for posting your video and I look forward to seeing more of what you are getting up to in Japan.
Thank you for the video Paul, it is nice to see what working photographers are really using and not what "marketing" photographers say you should use. As a Fujifilm shooter myself I would be interested in a video sharing your thoughts on and more on how you use the X100 line of Fujifilm cameras.
Hey J_Ragle. Thanks for you comment. That is a great idea for a video. The short version is that I simply take it with me. Having only one lens forces me to think how to get the best shot without a bag of lenses (which I usually don't want to carry). I remind myself that I only need to one good shot to feed the Instagram beast that day.
Hi J_Ragle. Thank you for your comment. I apologize for my tardy reply. The camera companies need to keep selling stuff to stay in business. Fair enough. I try to find tools that work well for me and stick with them. The more I change my gear, the more it messes with my workflow. If it helps me work more efficiently, then it's worth it. But if it doesn't.... I don't know how many times I have upgraded some software in my computer and everything goes bonkers. "I just want to get my work done!" (Of course, this happens the closer one gets to an important deadline. Ha ha!) I have posted a few more videos on my X100 series cameras.
Hmmm... I'll have to think about that. Basically, I was feeling like a hamster endlessly running on a wheel in a cage. An opportunity presented itself and so I seized it. And there was a woman I was chasing whom I didn't catch (and that turned out to work out for the best for both of us).
I'm a hobbyist mostly landscape photographer. I've got an X-T3, 35f2, 50-230 tele, Rokinon 12mmf2 for some astro or if I need something real wide, and the lens I use 75% is 16-80, it's just so versatile. Don't do much portraits, but would love a 56f1.2, it's just beautiful. And I really want some version of an X100 if I don't want to lug all that gear around. Great video and captures. Hey Dax. Thanks for your comments. I actually have my eye on the 16-80. I think that would be a very useful lens for me. X100 series cameras are great. See if you can find an excellent condition used one from a reputable dealer. It is liberating not carrying so much stuff around.

Great video Paul but...... I'm left wondering what else you have in your camera bag! It's good that you covered the cameras and lenses with the rationale for each, but I've seen other 'what's in my bag' content where it's the "other bits and bobs" that are really useful to understand. How about a supplementary video that covers everything in the bag that's NOT a camera or lens?

@@stevieb7121 The biggest part of the battery saga is that sometimes the cheap, third-party batteries swell up and are really difficult to remove from the camera. I won't use them on paid gigs anymore.
@@PaulCrousePhoto Interesting - I had the swollen battery issue on a Li-ion motorcycle battery a few years ago but I haven't experienced this issue with a camera yet. But I understand the problem, a swollen battery can be REALLY difficult to remove!
Nice video. I just got back into photography 3 years ago but it's an on-off type of hobby. I bought an X-t20 and have been very happy. I've been buying vintage lenses. Since I am not a professional I would rather buy a good quality vintage Minolta, Konica,or Pentax for $50 rather than a $500-$ 1000 Fuji. My photos aren't great but I am getting better.
Hi Tapasya. Thanks for your comment. Most of the pictures of my cameras and lenses in my videos are taken with a $45 used Nikon macro lens. You don't have to have expensive gear to make good photos. Have fun taking your pictures!
I had many hesitations, coming from M4/3, to buy used XT2, but finaly i took a new body with the XT30II. I'm very happy with it but when I see your images I really wonder if I was right to spend so much... I have the 18-55 and 35mmF2, both are used but very good looking. The dials are so useful, and I love the fuji jpg 👍

That is a great combo. I was about to pull the trigger on a used XH-1, but when I went back the next day, it was gone. And most of the used ones in Tokyo were swooped up around that time. Then the prices shot back up. Is that heavy for you? Do you have any problems with hand/wrist/arm pain using that? I had problems with carpel tunnel using my SLRs/DSLRs.

Just come across your videos, nice kit and good reasons. My kit for pretty much everything i do now is down to 3 lenses, I've wanted the 56 F/1.2 for about 6 years now but it was just never actually needed (I am used to the 50mm equv. FOV) I have the XT-3 is main camera, the XF 35 F1.4 as my go to portrait lens (and almost everything else i shot for years) the XF16-80 F/4 which i love, and the original XF 10-24 F/4 (this is mostly used for video). I did used to shot a lot with the 18mm F/2 for walking around but once i got the 16-80 F/4 it has not seen a lot of use, and weight is a factor for me too, and 90% of the time i can get all i need to do done, with the 16-80 F/4 and the 35 F/1.4
Hey Andrew. Thanks for your comment. Actually, I have been thinking seriously about getting a 16-80mm. I think I could do a lot of my gigs that and a 35mm 1.4 (or 56mm). I have had problems with dust from swapping out lenses too much. I tried the 16-55 but is like carrying a brick. You are putting bad ideas in my head. LOL! @@PaulCrousePhoto You are welcome. As a general rule I never sell glass, however; the 16-80 is really making me think do I need to keep all the glass that does not get used a lot any more. Some other lenses are used by family members (but they are mostly the 18-55 (Kit lens) and the 18-135) it is the primes that seem to go unused a lot now. I loved the small form factor of the 18 F/2 but when I looked at the images I took with the 18mm they were predominantly at F/5.6 or F/8 and the 16-80 gave me so much more flexibility so the F/4 was not really an issue to replace all the 18/F2 did (and the bigger lens made less of an issue when i moved to the XT-3 as the body is bigger) The 60 F/2.4 also no longer gets a lot of love as the 16-80 focus distance is 35cm and has a 0.25 magnification so can do sort of macro work (the 60 was 0.5 magnification) and I'm not a big macro photographer (although I'd still hold that the detail of the 60 F2.4 is up there with the best fuji has... but it just sits not being used) I think the real thing I found out after getting the 16-80 F/4 was I don't really need faster than F/4 when outside, and for photography inside, i have the 35mm F/1.4 and flashes and LED lights if required. My portrait work in studio when working with flash lights any lens will do, but my go to is always the 35/1.4 when I want those creamy backgrounds, I guess as I can frame the shot with the 35mm without even picking up the camera it makes the whole session easier (granted I am working closer to the models too) For video this is where the XT3 was the game changer for me, as the video performance at ISO 6400 is so good, even when i am filming under difficult lighting the 10-24 and 16-80 are perfect lenses for the job

Nice & informative video. In addition to my film cams, I normally travel with a Nikon D90 & 18-105 zoom lens. Seems to work fine but your approach has me wondering if I (1) should get more specialized focal lengths or (2) move to Fuji digital cams. Visited Kyoto in 2019 just before COVID and loved all of it -- minus the humidity.
Hi Norman. Thank you for your comment. If you like your current set-up, then there is no need to change. You might want to and a fast aperture 50mm equivalent lens. (I think it is a Nikon 35mm f1.8 DX, but don't quote me on that). A mid-range zoom and a fast fifty are a good kit for most people. I use specialized lenses because it is my job. I used to have a Nikon D90 kit before switching to Fujifilm about 9 years ago. I really like the being able to see what I am going to get on the back flippy screen while I am taking pictures with a mirrorless camera. And the photos straight out of the camera with Fujifilm are amazing. I used to waste a lot of time processing RAW images with the Nikon. Also, the camera and lenses are smaller and lighter. Of course, that is what worked for me. Everyone is different. Kyoto can be soooooo hot and humid. I keep reminding myself to enjoy the cold weather now. May and October are by far the best times to visit Kyoto. Good luck!
@@PaulCrousePhoto Thanks for response. I think I have a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 auto focus lens. When I Mail ordered my Nikon FM2 SLR years ago it shipped with that plastic body lens vs the standard Nikkor 50mm metal lens. Might even have an 85mm lens too if I look hard enough. Still love my Nikon FM2, Pentax Spotmatic SPII, Leica M3 and Minolta SRT 202. Just wish film prices would stabilize and there were more labs around, especially to do E6 processing (still love color slide film for its color & detail). High film prices, cold weather holding back gardens and COVID restrictions make it harder to shoot. Japan's gardens and shrines are just incredible to photograph. Safe travels.
I mainly use a Fujifilm X-T3 with 16mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.2. I have a 23mm 1.4 for my webcam/teleprompter setup when I do video calls so I can look at them in the eyes and that's what the other side see as well. I have an X-E2 with the 16-50 kit lens for timelapse (because I have a remote trigger for it). I would really like an X100V, for the same reason you've mentioned for the X100T. My only issue is that I'm moving more towards video, and I would like more video features (especially on the rumoured XH2). My dream would be to have near perfect AF and built in ND, but that's me dreaming. One of the reasons why I love the Fuji system is the instax printer. I don't do this professionally however I love giving people the printout from my printer (usually hidden in my backpack side pocket where the tripod normally goes) and see their, usually surprised, reactions. Since moving to Japan, I find that this hobby is considerably more expensive in Japan than it is in Canada which is about 12% more expensive on average (and some of the models only have Japanese menus....looking at Sony). Particularly for Fujifilm, it's about 20% less expensive if I buy it in USA. That being said, as much as Sony is great for video AF, I'm looking forward to the Fuji Summit in May, because I would like to stay in the Fuji system (for that photo experience and the fact that prime lenses are both great quality and relatively affordable).

Years back, when I moved switched from using Nikon, I considered Sony, but the Japanese-only menus nixed that idea -- although I shot this video with a Sony ZV-1 that I bought from B&H in New York. It is a small, all-in-one unit that fits my needs. I didn't want to completely change systems. It is too expensive and learning new menus is a pain. All of Fuji lenses have the old-style AF, so they aren't good for video. Once I learn more about how more about shooting video, I'll probably upgrade my Fuji camera and lenses. Great Video! I see, you just recently started your channel. But I really like your style and delivery and I really love Japan - always wanted to go there, someday. I just subscribed for more content in the future. I am an amateur/beginner photographer. I have bought a used Fujifilm X-T3 a few months ago for like 690€, body only. Which was a very good deal, I think. Right now I own the X-T3, the Fuji XC 15-45 mm, the XC 50-230 mm MK II, and two chinese lenses: The TTArtisan 35mm F1.4 and the TTartisan 50mm F1.2. Both are fully manual only, no autofocus. I wanted to test out how comfortable I am with using manual focus lenses. I think I am gonna keep these two, since they are cheap and good enough with image quality for the low price. I am gonna sell the XC 50-230 mm though. Maybe I got a bad copy or something but the lens is quite soft or not really that focused maybe at the long telephoto end, at 230 mm. At the wide 50mm it is really sharp actually. So a bit of a useless combination. I bought all my gear used, except both the TTArtisan lenses, which I got off Amazon. I think I wanna get the Fuji 10-24mm wide angle zoom next for landscape shots. Sorrry for the long ramble, but thanks a lot for your video and you showing your gear :) Cheers from Germany
Hi Pipippu! Thank you for your comment. I suggest getting the Fujifilm XF 55-200 zoom to replace your 50-230. The XF lenses are really a good step up. The XT3 is a great camera. Put good glass on it to get the most out of it. Have fun!

Enjoyable video. As for kit...Nikon D4 (my favourite), D850 (seldom used) and Fuji Xpro3 (urban) with the 16 f2.8, 27 f2.8, 50 f2. I dont make money from photography - it keeps me sane and provides an antidote to office work. Hi Anthony. Thanks for your comment. I don't mess around too much with the dynamic range settings. I usually shoot Provia and set the Shadows to -1, Sharpness to +1 and dial down the noise reduction. I do often shoot RAW + Jpeg. Using Capture One, I find that I can expand the dynamic range with the RAW file if I need be. Usually, it is the shadows that need some work. I don't like an overprocessed look. I try to do as to get it right in the camera. I hate sitting in front of the computer. BTW, what do you think of to Fuji lenses? I was contemplating those exact lenses.
My kit looks awfully like yours, except I'm broke my primary camera is an X-T1, I use primarly an XC 35 F2 lens with it, alongside a 7artisans 25mm 1.8 (great lens, and dirt cheap !). When I go hiking I take a XF 18-135 lens that I bought used, and when I need to do portraits, I wanted to get better pictures at longer focal length than my zoom was able to do, so I grabbed a Viltrox 85 1.8 which is wonderful (but still used, can't afford it brand new). I sometimes use some adapted lenses, like an old Nikon E Series 50mm 1.8 and a Tokina 12-24 F4, great lenses, but the Tokina got in the house fairly recently and I'm still learning to use the ultrawilde angle.
Hey Matthieu, It sounds like you are doing a good job getting the most bang for the buck. I used to have that Tokina 12-24 when I was shooting Nikon DX cameras. It is actually quite difficult to use an ultra-wide angle well. Keep practicing and you'll get better. Thanks for your sharing your comment.

I bought second hand the same 14mm and the 56mm you got, great lenses in perfect condition for just under 400 dollars each. I am a bit torn between a 23mm and a 35mm as the primary lens though. But hey one need something to be torn about in life. After the X-T5 came there was a lot if good deals on the X-T4 plus suddenly a good few became available second hand. I have the almost unused kit lens, its great blablabla but I take way better photos with primes than zoom, no its not the lens its me, zoom makes me lazy and the result is always snapshot i am less happy with. With primes i know how it works out and take pictures accordingly the perspective is exactly what I want and i am very happy. So for lazy me primes are far better for results. Others I know does not have the same issues so thats great for them. I dont buy off brand lenses, i rather buy great brand lenses second hand cheaper than off brand ones. Hi Jose. I don't use recipes because I trust that the Fujifilm engineers know infinitely more about color than I do. I am mostly concerned about skin tones looking good. I am a firm believer is letting the camera do the heavy lifting. I mostly use the Provia film simulation with -1 Shadows, +1 Sharpening, and dial down the noise reduction depending upon the camera. I sometimes use Velvia for landscape kind of stuff. For some situations, I shoot RAW + jpeg. Using Capture One, I can change the film simulations and they look really close to the Fujifilm jpegs. But mostly, I use the jpeg. Honestly, I hate screwing around with post-processing and try to get my shots looking good right out of the camera. 99% of pix on my websites are jpegs straight out of the camera.

Hey Keefe. Good question about camera prices in Japan. 1. It depends upon what country you are in and how strong the Japanese Yen is. They are not necessarily cheaper here. 2. Sony and Panasonic cameras sold in Japan only have Japanese language menus. You can't change them. (I did once with a Russian hack on a Panasonic camera, but that was a mistake). These are huge electronics companies and they do that to protect their distributors. I had to order my Sony ZV1 (which I used for this video) from New York. All of the other Japanese camera makers have multiple languages.
Hi Keefe. Thank you for your comment. I apologize for my late reply. Generally speaking, Japanese cameras are not any cheaper in Japan than overseas. It the last couple of months, the yen has dropped like a rock. That should show up as cheaper prices for Japanese products overseas. We'll have to wait and see. Be aware that Sony and Panasonic cameras sold in Japan ONLY have Japanese language menus. You can't change them. (This is one reason I use Fujifilm). This is done to protect the local distributors.
Yes. I bought an excellent condition used XT3 with a 16-80mm lens. I don't want 40 megapixels and the XT5 is crazy expensive here in Japan because of the exchange rates. The U.S. dollar is super strong now and the selling price is based on the dollar. The XT3 is great and is a much more reasonable price. The used market for Fuji gear is drying up here because of the crazy prices of new stuff.

@@arjunrai9555 I like it very much. While it is bigger than the 18-55, it is not a brick like the 16-55. It is sharp and is a very good focal length range for out-and-about general shooting. The AF is fast and accurate. It focuses very closely at 80mm, which is very useful. And the image stabilization is very helpful for static, hand-held video shots. I think it is an all-around excellent lens. This, along with a fast prime like the 35mm f1.4 or f2, makes a very versatile kit. I am glad I bought it.
That sounds like a good kit. I was playing around with a used X-H1 at my local camera store, but it sold right away. They are getting more difficult to find. Do you like it?

Hi Liran. Yes, I am ok without a battery grip, but I do use an add-on grip. I am 6'5"/nearly 2m tall and have giant hands. I find X-T series cameras a perfect size with an add-on grip. Sometimes I will use a battery grip when shooting events, but that is so that I don't have to worry about the batteries. Otherwise, I like to keep my camera as small as possible while still fitting my hand. I tried using an X-T20, but it was too small.

These gigs are usually a combination for tour guiding and a photo shoot. I try to have a short phone conversation in the booking process to find out what the clients are looking for -- as opposed to just clicking an automated booking online. This makes a huge difference. What people imagine in their head about a famous tourist city like Kyoto is much different than the reality -- mainly because of the sometimes insane crowds. I usually end up talking them out of their original idea and take them to not famous locations which are actually better.
The actual shooting is rather straight forward. Get them out of the direct sun, engage them in light hearted conversation to relax them. And then shoot. Actually, the camera is lower on the scale of importance. Any competent camera will do. The X-T1 has great color jpegs straight out of the camera, and that is why I use it.

The short version: Have the right gear and know how to use it. It should be second nature and not get in the way. Location, location, location. Have a good place with many possible backgrounds out of the direct sun. The most difficult part is interacting with people. Most folks are very self-conscious about getting professional pictures taken. I do my best to put them at ease. I try to have fun. Most people look good when they are having fun.

Thanks, Bill. The Fujifilm jpegs are really good. That is one of the big reasons I use these cameras. As for upgrading, there is always the newer thing. I just use my stuff until it breaks and then buy what I need. I usually buy l the previous year's model because it is cheaper and just as good -- unless there is something that will actually help me do my work more efficiently.

Thank you for your comments and kind words. Kyoto is a special place, but it is also a large Japanese city. LIke anywhere else, it has its good and bad points. I like living among such wonderful history. It is not nearly as huge as Tokyo or Osaka, which makes it very livable for me. But Japanese cities are also very cramped, dense, and crowded. In the last few years before the pandemic, the mass tourism had become overwhelming and many locals were getting fed up with it -- just like in Venice and Iceland. If you come to visit Kyoto, I highly suggest coming in May or October. These are the best times for weather and are not peak season (which are April and November).
Your comment on the X-100 cameras being less intimidating is 100% on point. I kinda have to use my X-T3 and 90mm for corporate headshot work but before the world fell apart I was doing online dating profile shoots primarily with my X-100f and the teleconverter. The people I photographed, who were not models, quickly forgot the camera was even there. They were usually more fascinated by me rigging lights to street signs and in other odd places since you need a permit for light stands in NYC. That leads to the really great thing about the X-100 series many people forget or simply don't know. The leaf shutter does amazing things outdoors when paired with even small speedlights. I still brought my X-T20 and a zoom along, typically the kit lens for tighter shots, though it spent the majority of a shoot in my bag.
I didn't know about light stands in NYC, but it is not surprising. Here in Kyoto, there is no law but lots and lots and lots of unwritten rules. Light stands and reflectors bring out little old guys in security uniforms. The X100 cameras keep them at bay. I try to look like a tourist.

Thanks for sharing your comments. I hear what you are saying about the X100 series cameras. People simply feel more relaxed. It is interesting about the lighting kits on the streets in NYC. Here in Japan, there aren't laws per se, but as soon as you put up a light stand, someone comes out to chase you away -- except on a few public streets. Some Chinese tour companies were selling wedding packages that included photo shoots that looked like movie productions. They'd just plop down tons of gear on a city street. These really upset local folks, and there was a clampdown.
Using a camera like an X100V makes it easier to fly under the radar. I am 6'5" and American, so I can't blend in. But not annoying the people you see every day helps make life easier.

I got an x100v and am on cloud 9 while taking pictures. Fuji jpegs and the velvia film simulation is the ultimate . The sharpness rendered by the lens literally blows my mind away.

Great video and nice shots! Kyoto is such a wonderful place. I recently moved with my wife to Osaka where she's from. I can't wait to explore the area more. We've started with Olympus and Panasonic M4/3 systems about 10 years ago then switched to Nikon APS-C but we missed the smaller form factor of M4/3. We switch to Fuji in 2019 and haven't looked back. I started with an X-T30 and my wife had an X-E2s. I now use an X-T4 and X100V and my wife has the X-T30 and X-E4 that replaced her E2s that I now regret giving away.

I loved this video! I come from shooting full frame and it’s been fun learning the Fuji system. I especially love how you use older Fuji gear. I have both an X-T4 and an X-T2. I’d love to see you on a low light or night time shoot talking about your process with the X-T2!
Thanks for you comment and your video idea, Robert. I am a very beginner at making RUclips videos. Soon, I hope to get outside and do some video shooting. I am still working out how to do it best being a one-man-band. But I have written down your suggestion along with the other great suggestions I have gotten from other viewers.
I quick tip: Scout out a location during the daytime that you think might be good a night. Then come back later with minimal gear and a tripod. Shoot in Manual. With ISO in Manual at a low setting. Set your aperture to around f8 and your shutter to a very slow speed, below one second. Look at he back screen to help you figure out which one. Write down your settings, because that is a good starting point.

This was great Paul! Kyoto is my favorite city in the whole world so I envy that you get to live there and shoot the city every day. I'd love to see how you approach general everyday photography or street photography. You've got a knack for these videos and I love the enthusiasm and realness (whatever that means)! Like the fact that you use older Fujifilm gear. There are some really talented photographers on RUclips but every video seems to be a new camera or a new lense. I have an X-T3 and an X-T4 but my go to camera is the X-H1 it is bigger and heavier than the other two and I have thought about selling it more than once. But I just keep going back to it. It just feels right when I am using it.
Hi Eric. Well, RUclips promotes consumption. Sell, sell, sell. People who make money off of RUclips do it by promoting current products. Of course, lots of photographers keep their equipment up to date because that is good business sense for them.
As for your XH1, use whatever feels good for you. I helped someone with a DSLR with the PSAM dial the other day and it was very frustrating to use because I have gotten used to using mirrorless screens and dials. A comfortable user interface is really important with camera gear.

I have an X-T4, but I’ve heard by many how amazing the X-T2 is still to this day. I used to shoot Nikon, but after getting the X-T4, I can’t go back. It fits my needs. The 18-55mm is the absolute best kit lens ever.
Hi Daniel. Thanks for your comment. I TOTALLY understand about "can't go back." I was working with a workshop client the other day who was using a DSLR. It was really frustrating to use. She looked at the flippy screen on my camera and said: "Wow, you can see everything on the back screen!" Then I showed her you can see the exposure changes right on the screen and she wanted one right away. LOL!
The XT-2 is a great bang for the buck. It doesn't have the video capabilities of the XT-4, but I get great images from it. And I love the flippy screen.

Yeah I’ve heard people say they actually prefer the X-T2 images over the X-T3/4. I’m not a seasoned Fuji shooter to know, but the fact that the older cameras hold their own weight that well is amazing.

Excellent points you made. Love the fact that you use 'older' fuji cameras. I am a senior ,retired hobby photographer & my first Fuji a couple of years ago was a Fuji X-T3.I am so glad to see that another photographer is a jpeg shooter. Nothing against raw , & will try it sometime. Trying to teach myself how to use Capture One for Fuji. You can't admit these days that your primary photography is jpeg in aperture priority most of the time. The Fujistas will get you ! lol! I am very happy with my 18-55, 35 f2 & recently acquired 70-300. I also recently purchased a very hard to come by (in Canada) a Fuji X-E4, my grab & run out the door camera.Minimalistic to many, I have it set up the way I like to use it, all is good, no menu diving. New subscriber too.

You can admit what ever you want. If other people don't like it, that is their problem. Most people that get upset about silly things like that really don't know what they are talking about, but they think they do. (Which is pretty much true of everything online.) Photography (and the world) is not about dogma. People have different philosophies on how to do things, and that is fine. I think is good to hear different ideas. There is so much to learn. What matters is the image and if you can consistently create excellent images. How you get there is your business. I use Program Mode a lot of the time. (Blasphamy!!! Ha ha ha!).

Hey Tim. Thanks for your comment. I try to buy my cameras from the local Naniwa camera store on Shijo Street in Kyoto. I like to support local businesses. I have shopped there for more than 20 years and they know me.
If not, I buy used gear online from Map Camera in Tokyo. They are very trustworthy and efficient. I will sometimes buy new gear from Yodobashi Camera, although their prices are high, but they have everything. Before the pandemic, I would sometimes go hunting for used gear in Umeda and Namba in Osaka. (I have no affiliation with any of these stores).
If you search EYExplore (who I do work with), on their blog are a couple of good posts about used camera stores in Tokyo. Useful info. There are quite a few shops on the westside of Shinjuku Station. Happy gear hunting!

Hey Brendon. Thanks for your comment. XT1's used to be dirt cheap used here in Japan. I just checked in Tokyo and the prices have gone back up -- but still a great deal if you can find an "excellent" or better condition one. The jpeg colors are really nice on those sensors.

At the moment, I don't know of any Tokyo camera shops that sell used cameras overseas (There might be some, but just don't know which). If you are in the U.S., I have had good luck buying used gear from KEH, but I haven't bought anything from them in several years and I don't know if they are still good or not. I am sorry, I don't know where to buy used cameras in other countries. Make sure to do your home work before you buy used gear online.

Comes from my training back in the 70’s when I worked at a camera store here in Bermuda. KEH, did have one, but I couldn’t get it at the time. Surely the Fujifilm company over there in Japan have some in there great vault for future reference, and they can send a free one to a loyal Fuji fan 😁 I purchased a Fuji pro 5 brand new a few years ago that was one of the best digital cameras I’ve ever had. It has a Nikon D200 body and lens mount, but the system inwardly is Fuji. I still have it, but it only works with the AC cord. If I don’t find or get the XT-1, I’ll probably go with the XH-1. A few of them still around. Take care from photographers here in Bermuda 🙋🏽♂️

My kit is very similar to yours. I am a younger generation photographer and I think this gear preforms very well up to this date and it looks absolutely amazing. I dont care it is outdated, it can still produce awesome images. Thanks for the video and good luck with your channel.

I recently bought a X-S10, 18-55 and 70-300. After carrying a Nikon DSLR and three lenses on trips for the last 15 yrs, this light trio of Fuji camera and lenses is pure joy. What struck me about your video is that you shoot JPG and not RAW, I'll have to try that. Thanks for the education.
Hi Wayne. Thanks for your comment. Shooting jpeg forces you to get the picture right in the camera, rather than fixing it in post. I think by forcing myself to be diligent when I take the picture, I end up with better shots. I sometimes need to pull up the shadows a little in post with Fujifilm jpegs in some situations, but it is just a very little tweek. Good luck!
Almost exactly the same as my kit - the X-T1 and XF35mm f1.4 combo is other-worldly.
Yeah, that 35mm 1.4 has special sparkle and the X-T1 jpegs have really good colors.
I started out much the same as you. F3 Nikon shooting editorial work. Unfortunately I don't live an work in Japan. Good for you. Still have some Nikon gear I use for sports photography a D500, D750 and for that my go to lens is a 70-200. Recently got into the Fuji system with a XT 3. Currently have a 16x55 2.8 and a 90mm f2 and use this camera mainly for outdoor portrait work. Enjoyed your video, all the best to you.

Hi Paul! Enjoyed your video and overview. I recently got back into photography with a "real camera" after using just my phone for about three years. Back in the 80s I was shooting with a Ricoh film camera. Last year after a long research period I finally bought a barely used X-T3 with the 18-55. It's been a lot of fun. Still have a lot to learn, but looking forward to lots more fun with it. Take care!

Living in Japan so long, I have American food fantasies. I would kill to have a giant sandwich at a real Jewish deli in NYC right now. It was one of the first things I did the last time I was there. Funnily enough, I sat at the counter next to a Japanese businessman. He was surprised to that I spoke Japanese. When they served our sandwiches, he wondered how eat such a giant sandwich. He was about to use a knife and a fork (shocking!). So , I showed him the proper technique. LOL.
Ex-Wire shooter myself, and like you, I cut my photographic teeth back in the 80s, though at the time I was shooting with Canon gear, but I did own a number of the “de rigueur” Domke F2 bags (after all what self respecting 1980s PJ would be caught without one of Jim’s bags slung over their shoulders…? 😉) Fast forward to 2017, after being laid off from a local rag (frankly it was a blessing in disguise), I began to dump my Canon gear and honestly toyed with the idea of leaving photography altogether, I was burned out. After a year or so, that desire to get back out there and start shooting again returned with a vengeance. However, I did not want to be burdened with another massive arsenal of glass and heavy bodies, I wanted to keep it small, light and loose. A buddy of mine let me borrow one of his Fujis…(X-E2 s/ with the 18-55mm), I was hooked. The money that I made selling off my Canon gear a year earlier, easily covered the costs of an X-Pro 2, X-T2/with booster (bought the X-E2s from my friend), as well as a 50-140, 3 Fujichrons (35mm, 16mm, 56mm), 10-24mm, and the 18-55mm and a Nissin flash, with a lot of change leftover. As for future purchases, like many I get the occasional “G.A.S.” attack but it usually passes (though I did indulge an picked up the X-Pro 3, what can I say, I am a sucker for ranger finder “styled’ cameras), though my workhorse X-T2 is getting a bit long-in-the-tooth, so I am looking forward to the possible release of an X-T5, just as long as it is not made or assembled in China (the reason that I passed on the X-T3/4 releases) Oh…I still have my original Domke F2 from 1987, it is beat all to hell, but I still employ it from time-to-time. @@PaulCrousePhoto I’m going to chime in here. I bought the X100V over the XPro3 because I was concerned with the folded shut rear screen. Changed out my Sony A7iii for a Canon R5 and the screen is folded shut and changed out my X100V for the XT4 and yep.. rear screen folded shut.
Like you I prefer Made in Japan always. I feel like there’s some spirit of the craftsman put into the object. It’s a shame the new lenses are made In Phillipines. Not because it’s not a good lens but it doesn’t have that “magic” from Made in Japan stuff.

Hi Paul - I love your videos. I have been drawn to fill my bag with Sigma's and Tamron's, but watching your video was cathartic. I have XT3 + XT100 + XT1 with 14/2.8, 56/1.2 and 35/1.4 - I have used F100 + F3 +FM2 with 20/4.0 + 24/2.8 + 27/2.8 and 85/2.0 as a school photographer; the set is mine. Long live EBAY when I used to stay up to outbid others :) I do love my Nikon gear. FYI, I have got a lens adapter to use Nikon lenses on Fuji X bodies. Thank you!

That's my bag after 15 years of shooting. Similar to yours though for wide angle I find zoom to be more useful.
I didnt like the AF on 35/1.4 and imagine the 56 to be equally unreliable. I mainly shoot children now and rely on focus tracking (the times of single focus point + recompose are behind me).
Haven't given the 56 a try for this reason alone.

Thanks for sharing. I love Fujifilm cameras. My XT2 shutter button just gave up, stuck at half-pressed. Most of my memory in Japan was captured by XT2 and XT20. I really want to go to Japan again after these travel restrictions. Hope you continue to share more videos.
Hi oOISCIOo. Thank you for your comment. Let's hope the pandemic dies down soon. Pro travel tip: the best times to come to Japan are May after the first week (which the Golden Week holidays) or in October. The weather is great and you can avoid the tourist hoards of April and November. I think May is the best because the gardens are fully in bloom and the weather is perfect.

Hi Russ. Thanks for your comment and your video idea. In the mean time, what film simulation are you using? What kind of pictures are taking?
I suggest taking one film simulation, like Provia/Standard, and experimenting with the "Color" settings in the "Q" menu.
Do a controlled test. Find a location to take your pictures. Pick one subject and put your camera on a tripod, if you can. A manually set the iso, shutter speed and aperture, so they don't change. Then take a series of photos of this same scene, changing the "Color" setting from +4 to -4 for each frame. Then look at the pictures in the computer. Which one do you like the best.
Then start taking some photos with that "Color" setting to see if you like it. If not, do that same thing with a different film simulation.
It is a rather tedious process, but it is a good way to find out what exactly your camera can do.
Remember to change only one thing at a time.

Like you, I used Nikon and Fuji back in the film days and now use an EM10 Mkii, primarily with a Sigma 30 2.8 DN Art lens and for portraits I love their 56mm 1.4 lens.
I believe keeping it simple and light . I’m not getting any younger . I found my old Pentax with a zoom gave me neck ache after touring with it daily across Europe . That was when I realised I needed something a lot lighter and smaller .
I have the big Billingham bag from the film days that carried at one time a 6x6, a compact , two SLR bodies and an assortment of lenses. Boy, was that a weight to lug around .
I also enjoyed 5x4 - who wouldn’t ha ha.
I avoid over processing and transfer most files to the phone to process in Snapseed and then post off in to Photobooks , of which I do several each year.
I have a cellar of negs that do not see the light and among them are some of the images that I presented to the Photographers Gallery back in the day .
My interests are primarily the grandchildren and street , the latter I do more on my phone when I can escape from childcare duties .
I work on the principle that I photography for myself and choose subjects that put a smile on my face.
One of my favourite haunts is coffee shops where clients are drinking and chatting away . I really must do a book on that theme one day , as many of those establishments change over time .
Anyway, thanks for posting your video and I look forward to seeing more of what you are getting up to in Japan.

Hey J_Ragle. Thanks for you comment. That is a great idea for a video. The short version is that I simply take it with me. Having only one lens forces me to think how to get the best shot without a bag of lenses (which I usually don't want to carry). I remind myself that I only need to one good shot to feed the Instagram beast that day.

The camera companies need to keep selling stuff to stay in business. Fair enough. I try to find tools that work well for me and stick with them. The more I change my gear, the more it messes with my workflow. If it helps me work more efficiently, then it's worth it. But if it doesn't.... I don't know how many times I have upgraded some software in my computer and everything goes bonkers. "I just want to get my work done!" (Of course, this happens the closer one gets to an important deadline. Ha ha!)

I'm a hobbyist mostly landscape photographer. I've got an X-T3, 35f2, 50-230 tele, Rokinon 12mmf2 for some astro or if I need something real wide, and the lens I use 75% is 16-80, it's just so versatile. Don't do much portraits, but would love a 56f1.2, it's just beautiful. And I really want some version of an X100 if I don't want to lug all that gear around.

@@stevieb7121 The biggest part of the battery saga is that sometimes the cheap, third-party batteries swell up and are really difficult to remove from the camera. I won't use them on paid gigs anymore.

Nice video. I just got back into photography 3 years ago but it's an on-off type of hobby. I bought an X-t20 and have been very happy. I've been buying vintage lenses. Since I am not a professional I would rather buy a good quality vintage Minolta, Konica,or Pentax for $50 rather than a $500-$ 1000 Fuji.
My photos aren't great but I am getting better.
Hi Tapasya. Thanks for your comment. Most of the pictures of my cameras and lenses in my videos are taken with a $45 used Nikon macro lens. You don't have to have expensive gear to make good photos. Have fun taking your pictures!
I had many hesitations, coming from M4/3, to buy used XT2, but finaly i took a new body with the XT30II. I'm very happy with it but when I see your images I really wonder if I was right to spend so much... I have the 18-55 and 35mmF2, both are used but very good looking. The dials are so useful, and I love the fuji jpg 👍

That is a great combo. I was about to pull the trigger on a used XH-1, but when I went back the next day, it was gone. And most of the used ones in Tokyo were swooped up around that time. Then the prices shot back up.
Is that heavy for you? Do you have any problems with hand/wrist/arm pain using that? I had problems with carpel tunnel using my SLRs/DSLRs.

My kit for pretty much everything i do now is down to 3 lenses, I've wanted the 56 F/1.2 for about 6 years now but it was just never actually needed (I am used to the 50mm equv. FOV)
I have the XT-3 is main camera, the XF 35 F1.4 as my go to portrait lens (and almost everything else i shot for years) the XF16-80 F/4 which i love, and the original XF 10-24 F/4 (this is mostly used for video).
I did used to shot a lot with the 18mm F/2 for walking around but once i got the 16-80 F/4 it has not seen a lot of use, and weight is a factor for me too, and 90% of the time i can get all i need to do done, with the 16-80 F/4 and the 35 F/1.4
Hey Andrew. Thanks for your comment. Actually, I have been thinking seriously about getting a 16-80mm. I think I could do a lot of my gigs that and a 35mm 1.4 (or 56mm). I have had problems with dust from swapping out lenses too much. I tried the 16-55 but is like carrying a brick. You are putting bad ideas in my head. LOL!

@@PaulCrousePhoto You are welcome. As a general rule I never sell glass, however; the 16-80 is really making me think do I need to keep all the glass that does not get used a lot any more. Some other lenses are used by family members (but they are mostly the 18-55 (Kit lens) and the 18-135) it is the primes that seem to go unused a lot now.
I loved the small form factor of the 18 F/2 but when I looked at the images I took with the 18mm they were predominantly at F/5.6 or F/8 and the 16-80 gave me so much more flexibility so the F/4 was not really an issue to replace all the 18/F2 did (and the bigger lens made less of an issue when i moved to the XT-3 as the body is bigger)
The 60 F/2.4 also no longer gets a lot of love as the 16-80 focus distance is 35cm and has a 0.25 magnification so can do sort of macro work (the 60 was 0.5 magnification) and I'm not a big macro photographer (although I'd still hold that the detail of the 60 F2.4 is up there with the best fuji has... but it just sits not being used)
I think the real thing I found out after getting the 16-80 F/4 was I don't really need faster than F/4 when outside, and for photography inside, i have the 35mm F/1.4 and flashes and LED lights if required.
My portrait work in studio when working with flash lights any lens will do, but my go to is always the 35/1.4 when I want those creamy backgrounds, I guess as I can frame the shot with the 35mm without even picking up the camera it makes the whole session easier (granted I am working closer to the models too)
For video this is where the XT3 was the game changer for me, as the video performance at ISO 6400 is so good, even when i am filming under difficult lighting the 10-24 and 16-80 are perfect lenses for the job

Nice & informative video. In addition to my film cams, I normally travel with a Nikon D90 & 18-105 zoom lens. Seems to work fine but your approach has me wondering if I (1) should get more specialized focal lengths or (2) move to Fuji digital cams. Visited Kyoto in 2019 just before COVID and loved all of it -- minus the humidity.

If you like your current set-up, then there is no need to change. You might want to and a fast aperture 50mm equivalent lens. (I think it is a Nikon 35mm f1.8 DX, but don't quote me on that).
A mid-range zoom and a fast fifty are a good kit for most people. I use specialized lenses because it is my job.
I used to have a Nikon D90 kit before switching to Fujifilm about 9 years ago. I really like the being able to see what I am going to get on the back flippy screen while I am taking pictures with a mirrorless camera. And the photos straight out of the camera with Fujifilm are amazing. I used to waste a lot of time processing RAW images with the Nikon. Also, the camera and lenses are smaller and lighter. Of course, that is what worked for me. Everyone is different.
Kyoto can be soooooo hot and humid. I keep reminding myself to enjoy the cold weather now. May and October are by far the best times to visit Kyoto.

@@PaulCrousePhoto Thanks for response. I think I have a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 auto focus lens. When I Mail ordered my Nikon FM2 SLR years ago it shipped with that plastic body lens vs the standard Nikkor 50mm metal lens. Might even have an 85mm lens too if I look hard enough. Still love my Nikon FM2, Pentax Spotmatic SPII, Leica M3 and Minolta SRT 202. Just wish film prices would stabilize and there were more labs around, especially to do E6 processing (still love color slide film for its color & detail). High film prices, cold weather holding back gardens and COVID restrictions make it harder to shoot. Japan's gardens and shrines are just incredible to photograph. Safe travels.
I mainly use a Fujifilm X-T3 with 16mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.2. I have a 23mm 1.4 for my webcam/teleprompter setup when I do video calls so I can look at them in the eyes and that's what the other side see as well. I have an X-E2 with the 16-50 kit lens for timelapse (because I have a remote trigger for it). I would really like an X100V, for the same reason you've mentioned for the X100T. My only issue is that I'm moving more towards video, and I would like more video features (especially on the rumoured XH2). My dream would be to have near perfect AF and built in ND, but that's me dreaming. One of the reasons why I love the Fuji system is the instax printer. I don't do this professionally however I love giving people the printout from my printer (usually hidden in my backpack side pocket where the tripod normally goes) and see their, usually surprised, reactions. Since moving to Japan, I find that this hobby is considerably more expensive in Japan than it is in Canada which is about 12% more expensive on average (and some of the models only have Japanese menus....looking at Sony). Particularly for Fujifilm, it's about 20% less expensive if I buy it in USA. That being said, as much as Sony is great for video AF, I'm looking forward to the Fuji Summit in May, because I would like to stay in the Fuji system (for that photo experience and the fact that prime lenses are both great quality and relatively affordable).

It looks like you have a nice photo kit. Years back, when I moved switched from using Nikon, I considered Sony, but the Japanese-only menus nixed that idea -- although I shot this video with a Sony ZV-1 that I bought from B&H in New York. It is a small, all-in-one unit that fits my needs. I didn't want to completely change systems. It is too expensive and learning new menus is a pain. All of Fuji lenses have the old-style AF, so they aren't good for video. Once I learn more about how more about shooting video, I'll probably upgrade my Fuji camera and lenses.

I see, you just recently started your channel. But I really like your style and delivery and I really love Japan - always wanted to go there, someday. I just subscribed for more content in the future.
I am an amateur/beginner photographer. I have bought a used Fujifilm X-T3 a few months ago for like 690€, body only. Which was a very good deal, I think.
Right now I own the X-T3, the Fuji XC 15-45 mm, the XC 50-230 mm MK II, and two chinese lenses: The TTArtisan 35mm F1.4 and the TTartisan 50mm F1.2. Both are fully manual only, no autofocus.
I wanted to test out how comfortable I am with using manual focus lenses. I think I am gonna keep these two, since they are cheap and good enough with image quality for the low price.
I am gonna sell the XC 50-230 mm though. Maybe I got a bad copy or something but the lens is quite soft or not really that focused maybe at the long telephoto end, at 230 mm. At the wide 50mm it is really sharp actually. So a bit of a useless combination.
I bought all my gear used, except both the TTArtisan lenses, which I got off Amazon.
I think I wanna get the Fuji 10-24mm wide angle zoom next for landscape shots.

Yes, I think everyone needs a zoom lens once in a while. I guess the difference in image quality is bigger than I thought, between the budget version and the XF55-200.
I heard that Fuji is planning on bringing out a 150-600 telephoto lens in 2022. That would be a dream lens for bird or wildlife photography. But I think with my minimal budget this will be way too expensive :)

Hi Anthony. Thanks for your comment. I don't mess around too much with the dynamic range settings. I usually shoot Provia and set the Shadows to -1, Sharpness to +1 and dial down the noise reduction. I do often shoot RAW + Jpeg. Using Capture One, I find that I can expand the dynamic range with the RAW file if I need be. Usually, it is the shadows that need some work. I don't like an overprocessed look. I try to do as to get it right in the camera. I hate sitting in front of the computer.
BTW, what do you think of to Fuji lenses? I was contemplating those exact lenses.
My kit looks awfully like yours, except I'm broke
my primary camera is an X-T1, I use primarly an XC 35 F2 lens with it, alongside a 7artisans 25mm 1.8 (great lens, and dirt cheap !). When I go hiking I take a XF 18-135 lens that I bought used, and when I need to do portraits, I wanted to get better pictures at longer focal length than my zoom was able to do, so I grabbed a Viltrox 85 1.8 which is wonderful (but still used, can't afford it brand new).
I sometimes use some adapted lenses, like an old Nikon E Series 50mm 1.8 and a Tokina 12-24 F4, great lenses, but the Tokina got in the house fairly recently and I'm still learning to use the ultrawilde angle.
Hey Matthieu, It sounds like you are doing a good job getting the most bang for the buck. I used to have that Tokina 12-24 when I was shooting Nikon DX cameras. It is actually quite difficult to use an ultra-wide angle well. Keep practicing and you'll get better. Thanks for your sharing your comment.

I use a Canon 5D Mark 4, but my prefer camera is a Canon M6 Mark II with a 32mm 1.4 lens. Is compact, light and do the job.

I bought second hand the same 14mm and the 56mm you got, great lenses in perfect condition for just under 400 dollars each. I am a bit torn between a 23mm and a 35mm as the primary lens though. But hey one need something to be torn about in life.
After the X-T5 came there was a lot if good deals on the X-T4 plus suddenly a good few became available second hand.
I have the almost unused kit lens, its great blablabla but I take way better photos with primes than zoom, no its not the lens its me, zoom makes me lazy and the result is always snapshot i am less happy with. With primes i know how it works out and take pictures accordingly the perspective is exactly what I want and i am very happy. So for lazy me primes are far better for results. Others I know does not have the same issues so thats great for them.
I dont buy off brand lenses, i rather buy great brand lenses second hand cheaper than off brand ones.

Great video Paul, do you use film simulation recipes when shooting JPEG? If not, what do you do for that?
Hi Jose. I don't use recipes because I trust that the Fujifilm engineers know infinitely more about color than I do. I am mostly concerned about skin tones looking good. I am a firm believer is letting the camera do the heavy lifting.
I mostly use the Provia film simulation with -1 Shadows, +1 Sharpening, and dial down the noise reduction depending upon the camera. I sometimes use Velvia for landscape kind of stuff.
For some situations, I shoot RAW + jpeg. Using Capture One, I can change the film simulations and they look really close to the Fujifilm jpegs. But mostly, I use the jpeg.
Honestly, I hate screwing around with post-processing and try to get my shots looking good right out of the camera. 99% of pix on my websites are jpegs straight out of the camera.

Thanks for the video. I'm always curious to know what other photogs use and why. Out of general curiosity, are Japanese cameras any less expensive in Japan than they are outside of the country?
Hey Keefe. Good question about camera prices in Japan.
1. It depends upon what country you are in and how strong the Japanese Yen is. They are not necessarily cheaper here.
2. Sony and Panasonic cameras sold in Japan only have Japanese language menus. You can't change them. (I did once with a Russian hack on a Panasonic camera, but that was a mistake). These are huge electronics companies and they do that to protect their distributors. I had to order my Sony ZV1 (which I used for this video) from New York.
All of the other Japanese camera makers have multiple languages.
Hi Keefe. Thank you for your comment. I apologize for my late reply. Generally speaking, Japanese cameras are not any cheaper in Japan than overseas. It the last couple of months, the yen has dropped like a rock. That should show up as cheaper prices for Japanese products overseas. We'll have to wait and see.

Hey anything changed in your gear as X-T5 was announced?
Yes. I bought an excellent condition used XT3 with a 16-80mm lens. I don't want 40 megapixels and the XT5 is crazy expensive here in Japan because of the exchange rates. The U.S. dollar is super strong now and the selling price is based on the dollar. The XT3 is great and is a much more reasonable price. The used market for Fuji gear is drying up here because of the crazy prices of new stuff.
@@PaulCrousePhoto ok fully understand that. X-T3 is still a superb camera. I am working with my X-T4s (as i bought into Fuji when this was the acutal model, and i wanted the bigger battery)
The 16-80 covers a great range!

@@arjunrai9555 I like it very much. While it is bigger than the 18-55, it is not a brick like the 16-55. It is sharp and is a very good focal length range for out-and-about general shooting. The AF is fast and accurate. It focuses very closely at 80mm, which is very useful. And the image stabilization is very helpful for static, hand-held video shots. I think it is an all-around excellent lens. This, along with a fast prime like the 35mm f1.4 or f2, makes a very versatile kit. I am glad I bought it.
My gear is XT-3 and XH-1 lens wise 56mm f/1.2 90mm f/2 24mm f/.4 16mm f/1.4
That sounds like a good kit. I was playing around with a used X-H1 at my local camera store, but it sold right away. They are getting more difficult to find. Do you like it?
@@PaulCrousePhoto XH-1 is my favourite camera for now I just like the quality of pictures that comes from it. Auto focus can a little problematic at times.

Hey Try. I bought a couple of third party back caps online and super-glued them together. This is a trick from the my newspaper days.

you doing ok without a battery grip ?
Hi Liran. Yes, I am ok without a battery grip, but I do use an add-on grip. I am 6'5"/nearly 2m tall and have giant hands. I find X-T series cameras a perfect size with an add-on grip. Sometimes I will use a battery grip when shooting events, but that is so that I don't have to worry about the batteries. Otherwise, I like to keep my camera as small as possible while still fitting my hand. I tried using an X-T20, but it was too small.
Fujifilm X-H1 and fujifilm X-t1 with 18-55mm f 2.8-4 and 55-200mm plus samyang 10mm f 2.8 and meike 85mm f 2.8 macro
