Finally; a video where I can actually see you put the two parts of the mechanism together and I can see HOW you put the belts onto the rollers!! You’re my hero. Thanks a million!!
I wish all explanatory videos were this clearly shown and well-explained. This isn't even my model of cassette deck but I still couldn't stop watching all the way through to see what tips I could pick up. Thanks!
Well good job for an amateur. It's a professional work you did. Even a professional technician started by making mistakes then he learned from it. I really appreciate your work ❤️
Boy! I feel so lucky! I just bought the identical deck, in perfect shape, from our county's electronic recycler for five bucks, but the belts are a melted, gooey mess! You just saved me a bunch of grief! LOL! Fantastic video! Thanks!
Thanks! Your video helped me replace belts in my Sony MHC-3600.... without watching video I don't think I would be able to do it on my own.... old belts basically disintegrated lol over years from heat or just being old, and there was no way to see it belt routing before taking apart. Big thanks!
I followed the excellent tutorial and got the goop out and the belts in. The good news is that everything runs. The bad news is that there is regular clicking on both decks, in both directions. It is obviously tied to the counter because the clicking is faster when the hub on either deck is spinning faster. There is also a background hum. I've checked all the connections and wiggled things while it was running. So, unfortunately, I have several hours down the drain and a deck that will be going to the dump next week. Absolutely GREAT tutorial ... this has nothing to do with your efforts. It simply shows that sometimes there is more than one problem.
This is great. Just Sunday I was given my mom’s old tape deck, which is a Sony very similar to this one and lo and behold, the belts need replaced. Once I get the belts I’ll be coming back to this video. Thanks!
Big thanks for this, a real public service. I really liked that you did this slowly and showed clear images of the belts on and how to just pop them onto the riollers once assembled which others don't spend enough time on. It worked for my sony double cassette tc w490. So happy now going to repair those other decks lying around, keep the best and sell the rest off.
Helped me a lot to fix my TC-WE 835S. Had an issue at first, redid the whole belt thing, this time I paid more attention to a nice looking alignment of the white plastic wheels thingy next to the shorter belt. Reassembled, everything's fine now.
Someone just gave me a NIB WR565 and the belts have turned to goo. I've re-belted a lot of turntables, VCR, tape decks, etc., but it is amazingly useful to benefit from your mistakes (which I most certainly would have made) and to see how to use the posts to hold the belts while you put the "clamshell" back together. Thanks!!😀
That is a most helpful video indeed. I will try this new knowledge on my TC-WE525 which looks a little different on the inside but it's from around the same time beginning of the 90s so I'm not expecting too many surprises. And you are very brave using your very first tape for the test run on your re-assembled deck. The deck could have done all kinds of bad things to your tape but you just believed in the quality of your work. 👍
I was mistaken. Seems as if Sony used a lot of different interior designs of cassette decks around this time beginning / mid of 90s and they all required a different approach changing the belts. My TCWE525 is more like the TCWE435 for which there's another video around here, lucky for me. It was quite a piece of work, had to take almost the whole thing apart just to remove the motor and that way get access to the belt. But I learned a lot along the way.
I've acquired 3 of sonys dual cassette deck. Did my 1st unit deck a. Deck b will have to wait due to one of the motors is good up with melted rubber belt. The smaller one.Amazing video allowed me to get it done. Have 4 more to do.
That was an excellent video I've seen other people do this and they didn't show it very good. I have a Sony TC- Wa8es that needs belts this shows the general concept . Thank you
Excellent! Simple, slow step by step instructions and great clear closeups so that one can actually see what's going on. And thanks for not putting any distracting background music throughout like some people do, lol. Good job! I have a Sony TC-WR520 that needs new belts. I've taken it apart to look around in it and just need to get some belts. I'm going to see if mine can disassemble like yours. I too had taken the whole unit out. I'll try it like yours. Also, I didn't know thats what those posts were for on the belts. I assume you found an online repair manual because I never would have figured out how to put the belts on using those posts. I did find a manual with diagrams for mine but it doesn't anything about wrapping around those posts (The manual calls them "claws") and then pushing them off and on the rollers. I wasn't sure what they were for.
Thanks - glad this was helpful! Believe it or not, I didn’t use the service manual to locate those “claws”. I searched RUclips for about an hour before I finally found a really poor video of someone doing this. Then I knew I had to make my own video, clearly, and in 4K.
Muchisimas gracias!
Great video, you don't appear to be an amateur, great tutorial 👍 now I know I can make this myself I have a Sony tc w250 that needs belts replacement. Thanks for this video.
WOW thanks for this. I have a Sony that sounds like the belt is slipping so I'm going to order the correct belts and see about replacing them before tossing the unit.
I also have a sony fh b170 music set. The cassette part of this one is the same as the 690. I think its belt fits too. Because everything is the same.I was very informed, I did the same. Thank you very much
Great video. It really shows how to resplacing sony cassette TC-WR690 isn't that easy. I use alot of Q tip and 70% rubbing alcohol cleaning off the old belt.
That’s a good suggestion! I guess I assumed that new belts would “default” itself back the original speed, but I think that an adjustment is in order as you recommend.
Hi Tech Stuff, nice video, I have an SONY TC-EX90, but the mechanism is the same as yours, but whet i change the belts, what I put it back together and tur it on it starts to make a grinding noise, and them starts fast forward and i cant do nothing. Any help please? Thanks
I now feel very confident I can fix my hardly ever used Sony dual Stereo cassette deck. I believe I purchased mine in the early 90 also, I have taken it apart to see what was going on and I could see the belt had broken more than likely from just being old and not being used, and knowing that the ribbons just come out of the deceptive clips LOL I didn't want to force them because they didn't have anything that looked like a release pin. Thankfully I decided to look at RUclips and found your video very clear and well recorded Great job! now I will search for belts.
@@TechStuff1 Hello there my belts finally arrived after having to send back two sets :( That were the wrong ones but I went directly to the dealer this last time and he sent them out :) I was not going to give up but I was losing hope I wont lye. Hopefully I will get to it this weekend. I will let you know, Thanks for the reply. :)
Sorry, I don’t know where you could find replacement gears. You might need to create a saved-search on eBay and wait for those gears to eventually come up for sale, or even buy another full unit to use for parts.
I just followed this tutorial. One deck has the playhead and pinch rolls engaged that i cant seem to get to release The other plays in the wrong direction and unspools the the tape. Any suggestions?
When does a tape deck need a belt replacement ?. I recentely got a tape deck/ cd stereo from one of my friends very good condition but he told me he never really used the tape deck only cd player, so do you think it might need just some demagnitizing if the tape audio sounds slowed down?. I recently tried it and the tape deck sounds slowed down. Plz help
The most common problem with old tape decks are the belts decaying over time. There could be other issues with it, like a failing motor, but the belts are usually the first place to start and is also the least expensive fix.
I changed the belts put in a new tape and all works, but if I press stop the tape spins back a bit. Then press play and it stops as the tape is lose. If I press rewind and play all fine. Stop and play dose not work, Same on Bothe sides? Any ideas how to fix this. Thanks!
I haven’t seen the inside of that model, but I would assume it’s the same or very close since most tape decks from that era had similar working mechanisms.
Some Sony cassette decks are over engineered and it can be a hassle just to replace the belts. Not including if you have to replace a gear or a cog. Idler gear are the worst to work on. Especially if you can't find parts.
SOS! Cleaned up all of the goo and added new belts. Now my right side tape deck won’t accept Tapes like they are too big. I can’t figure out how anything is misaligned
So I followed the instructions and it turns on, and the motor screams, Ive lubricated the motor, and connected everything as I see it in the video, but it still just eats my tapes. Any suggestions?
Old belts is the usual culprit with old tape decks, but pinch rollers and capstans also make the tape move. Other than giving those parts a thorough cleaning with some isopropyl alcohol, this type of repair is unfortunately past my skill set.
A couple of notes to build on this video. This is a Sony TCM190 transport, a very commonly used mechanism in Sony decks. Taking out each of the mechanisms is actually a good practice. The reason is that it is a good idea to remove each of the motors and to lubricate the bearings and to test function. Otherwise they can intermittently squeal. The biggest issue is that many of these have cracked mode gears which must be replaced. Otherwise, even with new belts, the decks can eat tapes and not work consistently. Lastly, all belts are not created equal. Do your homework. I’ve also found that the speed of the decks in these decks is off and can be easily adjusted but you need the right equipment and a good test tape to do that. Otherwise good job. These are worth fixing up.
well surely the late decks were more economic but I think this is a cheap model itself as most of all double cassetes with no bias and rec level adjustments and no oscillator
Finally; a video where I can actually see you put the two parts of the mechanism together and I can see HOW you put the belts onto the rollers!!

I agree with you.

Great! Thanks für this Video. Will start fixing my Sony deck right now!
Exzellent Video, thank you! One question: when installing the small belt, in which direction shows the end of the spring? I am not sure about that...
Excellent video!

Suggest to adjust tape speed (and high speed dubbing) since the new belts add more tension to the mechanisms.

Hi thanks for the quick reply, I just uploaded a video on my channel (Sony TC Wr 670 playback problem) to show the problem. Greatfull for any tips.

It could be the the big gear at the back that needs turning. It sounds like your head unit is stuck in play position.
Thanks I’ll check !
Can someone tell me the sizes of the belts pleassee
thank you but i live in turkey. original belts is no here. please write me belts dimensions (sory about my bad english)
