    People probably like character modeling for the same reason people like drawing people.

    lol character modeling is such a pain. I love the concept phase but after the model is done I’m just excited to go make random props

      Loved the part about time management too, I see so many videos where people spend so much time modeling out details I would only use a normal map for. Def gotta pick your battles

      Glad im not the only one then! Yeah the extra detail modeling is crazy. I think it’s cause our universities try to prepare us modellers for the film industry. Where the extra detail can be justified. But the majority of graduates probably are going to move into games first.

    I think the main reason we are given front and side view is because, in studio you will be given a concept art. And to match front, side, three fourth is like a skill.
    What you mentioned is helpful if you want to know the tools more. But working front, side benefits your artistic skill.
    I do get your frustration. But probably you know more.

      Thanks for commenting! Yeah you’re 100% right. Certainly front, side and back view are essential if you need the concept modelled perfectly. It just not something students should be learning on week 1. Especially, a banana haha!

      @@spalatobros being able to translate information from a reference accurately is a fundamental skill that absolutely should be introduced as early as possible. Especially if you are looking to work in a production environment as a 3d artist.

      @@jacobtravis1270thanks for your comment! I can accept that opinion. But I think students would learn more easily if they make a crate, vase or lightbulb instead of a banana, for beginners.

      Excellent pathway! You'll do extremely well in this. I'd also recommend doing some simple game dev learning so you can give any assets you make more purpose. Which will look great to future employers. Cheers!

    Warcraft 3 character models aren't too time consuming. And It comes with a ton of default textures. Love mixing different textures.

    So real. I graduated from uni with a degree in VFX in 2022. Still don't have a job. Admittedly I can't model to expand my portfolio right now because my laptop is ass but on top of that... *my uni course doesn't exist any more*. Some of my class mates have film credits now which is awesome but yup. :)

      @spalatobros  3 дня назад

      @@cuppacharly yep I know plenty of artists who’ve had to switch their careers even after graduating. I got lucky and landed a pretty stable 3D modeling job.
      Ugh! let me guess public university?
      Would highly recommend getting a pc for modeling. Unless it’s a gaming laptop, laptops aren’t that great.
      Have you considered getting into game development?

    Hey!
    Just started getting into blender with the "DONUT" of blender guru.
    Can you recommend what video I should watch next to get a good idea of how to 3d model object using references?
    I REALLY want to 3d model my Casio 991 cw Calculator cause i thought it would be a good start.

    • @spalatobros
      @spalatobros  3 дня назад

      @@justusimperator537 ah blender with their donut video, I swear it’s probably the least useful video. It’s really rare that artists use toruses and procedural modeling (which is not beginner friendly). it is good to watch videos but to learn faster what id do what I do in my video: go on sketchfab. Look for what you like, download the fbx, import it in blender. Look how they’ve made it. Then you can make your own using simple meshes. A calculator is a great starting model as it mostly uses cubes. I looked at the one you want to do it’s a little more complicated. First I would mode a slightly simpler calculator, as it’s your first time. Don’t bother about making it perfect and keep it simple (: goodluck! I’d love to see how you do. You lost me in the first 2 minutes. Bananas aren’t transferable to other mediums? It’s cool to prefer hardbody modeling or whatever but a banana is an organic shape and organic shapes are worth learning how to do.

    • @spalatobros
      @spalatobros  2 дня назад

      Sure, I definitely agree with you that organic modeling is worth learning. But if its your first ever time in the software, would you rather make a banana or an industrial crate?
      When I mean other mediums, I mean things like game Dev. Like, what are the chances your game will need a banana model? Vs more generic models like the industrial crate I mentioned above.
      Would love to hear your thoughts on the other points too! Cheers! Happy modeling!

    You need to model base off concept art, so a banana is a concept :)

      @@MetalGearMk3 thanks for the comment. yeah, I’m just saying we shouldn’t be starting off with bananas as it’s more of an organic model.
