This video will show you a concrete floor makeover we did for a bar & grill pub in Old Orchard Beach, Me.
The original concrete floor was cracked, chipped, and very unlevel. We had to demo some ceramic tiles, grind off the mastic and repair the cracks in the floor. Then we used self-leveling concrete to restore and level the floor before we applied a beautiful epoxy flooring.

I'm the foreman for a commercial flooring company in Manhattan for 20 years . And I have to say you guys did an amazing job.
I’m from nyc . What company?
I'm self-employed in Alaska and I too think they did a good job.
I've used plenty of floor leveler in old buildings to prep for tile or laminate flooring. I found if you take a paint roller frame on a pole, (no cover) and slowly roll it back and forth thru the wet leveler, it helps to spread it out and lets the self-leveling do its job. Rinse off in water and save for the next job.
Good tip, thanks!
@@MikeDayConcrete njj.
You need to use a roller with spikes.. So you roll the air out as well
@@mule666 that was my next question. How do you avoid bubbles? Thank you :/
Hot tip!
Man I have a lot of respect for you guys. I'm retired now, but I'm a 4th generation builder. We did all of our own concrete and I know the work that involved. Back breaking, bent over, hard work...expecially in the summer time. Digging footings and forming was the hardest for me. Pick and shovel work sometimes...whew...that and roofing.
Hey I’m a concrete finisher local 502 I work for a company and have my own side work I do every aspect of concrete I do epoxy I just gotta say that floor looks really clear very impressed with your technique and passion for concrete to even be able to get a floor to look that good the reflector on that floor was a mirror finish I didn’t see and bubbles or curdle mad props to you guys out there on the east coast
Here's a comma for ya. ,
Thank you Nick!
Put denatured alcohol in a spray bottle it gets rid of the bubbles.
@@jerryboykin3635 denatured after what step? After The metallic epoxy or the final poly clear coat layer?
After epoxy cause of off gassing of concrete.
Excellent presentation. Low key, intelligent explanation with no finger pointing, arm waving hype. Well done!
Cheers from Australia. Oh ... and no FN music.
I like those spike shoes... makes this job so easy!
5:07 and MAGIC! beautiful!
I used a self-leveler before but it hardened fast.
Anyway, I have a floor like this in my garage. I put a smart tv and the kids loved it so much they were out there all the time. The floor feels amazing on your feet as well. It seems to stay at a perfect temperature as well.
Stunning hello from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪
Nice job love the new floor
I would recommend the boys to were there mask while mixing all that stuff...👍
the $ 1000.00 question : how long will it last ?
depends: on amount of traffic ?
depends : on the thickness of the epoxy applied ?
depends: on the maintenance ?
would be great to have a follow up video 👍
Tks great work btw 👍
*THEIR* masks…
I got a friend who does this. He teamed up with another company and now you never see him because travels the country doing it. He does college football stadiums etc. I never knew you did this, great job! Owner owes you and your crew a lobster sandwich and cold one.
Night and day difference right there. Beautiful and durable. Easy to clean. Very nice. 👍
Thanks 👍
Wow the floor looks beautiful and more simpler then putting tile or marble flooring.
Every step of this process was so satisfying to watch, I can only imagine how it feels to do it, or to own it.
That came out very nice, hats of to you guys...the only problem is epoxy resin floor is not as hard wearing as i thought (scratches easily). Will need regular polish and buffing. Speaking from experience did it in my own home.
Beautiful work as always
Thank you!
Used to live just down the street from there. Old Orchard is a great place to live and visit.
I plan to do similar in a work room. It's concrete, so I'll float it, and seal it. Then lay the color, and lightly sand all over. put on a top leveling clear coat to fill any little dimple or hole. sand that flat, then a light clear coat. Gives an extra depth and gets rid of little dimples and lines you can see in the light.
Nice work i made this 15 Years ago in Switzerland, great look👍
Holy shit….!!! Just amazing….!!!
Awesome job….!!!
Need to do this in my house…!!
Love it….!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You’re so laid back about your great work... 👏🏼
super impressive the level of excellence you achieve on all the many variety of projects you work on .... great job guys
Thank you very much!
So I did epoxy garages, what we did for a metallic floor is do a solid color for a base coat, like grey for instance, and right after we roll it out, we pour whatever colors the customer wants around the floor and then manually swirl it with a roller. Looks absolutely insane
I have to admit I was skeptical at first but you should be proud, it turned out phenomenal!
I am so glad to have found this training video...and now looking at all that you show...thanks.
That's pretty spectacular ... awesome job
wow..............that is awesome!.........people should have that done to their basements and garage floors! Hope 2021 is very busy for you!...lots of $$$
We've done a lot of basements and a few garage floors.
That will be so much easier to keep clean, and looks so nice.
Love it! I do log home restoration finishes in Tn and I love taking something old and bad and making it look great. I wish more men would take their trades serious like you all!
Great job! Looks amazing. Does anyone know how durable this stuff is? Is it garage worthy? I have a light duty workshop and was thinking about putting this in there. Scratching, pitting, gouging?
I went to the comment section with the same questions as you. Did you ever get an answer?
@Wood and resin Designs.c o m thanks for the reply. You're the first one in almost a year to answer, as you can see.
@Wood and resin Designs.c o m I actually had colored/tinted concrete poured about a week ago. I'm going to see how that turns out. They're coming to grind it tomorrow. They didn't smooth it enough when finishing it. So now they have to grind it.
Awesome! Big fan of Silpro Fastcrete
It's so good!
We did our home kitchen that way.. but did get air pockets, even after they sealed the concrete before.
I wish we waited a week to the let the pad degas before we had the epoxy done. That aside… still looks cool!
Mike, can you post more of these types of jobs? Did you use Lowe's and Home depot for your materials?
We finished the stamp concrete job it came out amazing the center was colored brickform light grey and highlighted with dark grey it was stamped with alternating seashell and slate stamps the border was done in brick form desert tan and was broomed
That's awesome Jacob!
@@MikeDayConcrete and it has 4 foot diamond saw cuts
Sir, you did a great job. You have talented employees as well, 👍👍
Beyond beautiful that's amazing......this is the type of floor I want for my next home's basement & garage 👍
It appears they skipped the step for priming the floor first. Most contractor’s skip the proper priming step because it adds one day onto their precious schedule. If you want something done right, you have to either do it yourself, or learn the process and stay on top of contractors.
My contractor was going to skip the prime phase then skip the diamond mesh ( rebar ) step. I fired him immediately then he proceeded to call ME the idiot. He said he had been doing this for 30 years without any problem. I said YOU’VE BEEN DOING IT WRONG FOR 30 YEARS.
Instructions for wood:
Prime the wood surface with HENRY 554 LevelPro Underlayment Primer undiluted and allow the primer to dry overnight (12 hrs. min., 24 hrs. max.) After priming with HENRY 554 LevelPro Underlayment Primer, install 3.2 or 3.4 galvanized, expanded diamond metal lath mesh (“plaster lath”) to the subfloor, stapling approximately
every 6 inches to prevent the mesh from “floating”. Overlap adjacent pieces of lath approximately 1”.
@@wheelie642 I've got various ideas & videos saved for what I want in a bar top also so definitely have some reading & research to do. That shine is what gets me 👍
I thought that place closed...thanks for sharing. Charles
Beautiful work as always. I just had a 1250sf slab poured in my pole barn. By watching your videos I graded and framed it myself. I hired three guys to do the pour and power trowel and saved thousands. Thank you for all the knowledge. You are a great teacher. What would be the best clear product to seal it that would be oil and gas resistant. How long do I need to let it cure before sealing and do I have to grind the power trowel smooth off ? Keep up the great content. I am in central Florida by the way.
This is a good clear sealer, better than regular acrylic concrete sealers: www.walttools.com/product-categories/product/deco-2k-1-25-gallon-kit
Got to wait 28 days before applying it though.
Floor should have been smooth after power troweln
Fantastic Video! Very impressed with your excellent workmanship and know how.
Unbelievable finish. Excellent job wow
Thank you very much!
What a change. Looks beautiful. Excellent job.
Thank you!
Wow! This looks great. Great value and bang for the buck for the owner. I have to admit that I had low expectations for this one in the beginning of the video, but I was definitely surprised. You go man...
Thank you!
I’d like to see a video of this floor after 6 months of public traffic (or even after a few weeks). And how easy is it to remove that like you did the tiles to change back to tiles for longer wear?
That's a Beautiful Floor👍
Thank you
Looks great Mike I removed tile from my basement floor need to level with self leveling compound needed to remove mastic glue from tile residue then you suggest a water base epoxy primer then two different colors of epoxy to get that marble look excellent
Wow! Prep(dry) went well. Very seldom the concrete is not contaminated and needs replaced under those horrible red tiles. Not too many pinholes or bubbles after 'self-leveling'. Floor turned out absolutely beautiful. Is it non-skid? Or slip resistant? A full broadcast floor for kitchen areas is what I'm used to.
You do top notch work.
You did a great job. I do excavation couple towns over. I want that on my Basement floor
No problem!!
oh so cool - I love it - I have to try and do this - maybe I'll try the front entrance first. Just 5 x 7 or so....
Dood Wicked Pissah! Your ah mainah! Killah job buzzy!
That finish popped!!!
That’s really Awesome and looks Great !!!
Good afternoon Mike Day , You and your crew have always did great work . This floor is the best that I have seen anywhere that I have been . Please keep up the great work and videos.
Wow, thank you
Nice job, I'd be dammed if i could walk past a beautiful floor with them colors and not feel like stopping in for a coffee 🤣🤣
You and me both!
A quick fyi, that vb5 doesn't block moisture very well, I've used it for many years. Some will start to bubble after a couple years if the hydrostatic pressure is over 6psi. Definitely helps with outgassing with the money coat.
I've never had any problems with it. Been using it for 15 years.
@@MikeDayConcrete Thats awesome, we have alot of basements in Minnesota and our water tables are high. Its a pain in the rear....lol I didn't know elite-crete was out for 15 years. Ive only been using them for 9 years
Fantastic job buddy!
Thanks a lot!
That floor looks awesome! Nice explanation! Great video!
Great video..
the floor; night and day difference. It needed a facelift especially in that area of the restaurant.
People will want to dance in that area now.. bet the owner was ecstatic with the results.
Patrons are more opt to stay longer if the location is esthetically appealing.
You're right, thanks!
Restaurant owners don't want customers to stay longer! Rapid turnover means more money. 😒
So important to mechanically mix with a paddle, thank you.
Wow! That looks awesome!
and now they have a problem with a floor that far outclasses the rest of the joint lol! nice work!
Wow, that floor looks awesome!
That's awesome man!!! I sub for sanford flooring. I've never done a floor like that before. But I need to learn how to prep really badly rough pour cement basement floors to be flat enough for clickboard. Thats my biggest experience lack r.n. awesome vid
This is really a cool process. Thanks for the vid. What has to happen if you want a slightly less reflective surface finish on this type of material?
A wicked nice floor.
Glad you know Maine! So question: could I use leveler on an old 1800's hardwood floor to level off the board height? On a 2nd floor? Curious about the idea. Thanks!
That's a really cool looking floor
Wow that looks fantastic .
How about the MIX DESIGN: for that self leveling floor material?
Is this floor slick when wet...like when it rains or when you have snow on your shoes..or when someone spills a drink? Just curious,it looks slippery.
Yes, when wet.
Another great job Mike looks fantastic.Tony from New Mexico
Thanks 👍
Beautiful job.
Thank you!
Beautiful floor
Ooh man love they way it came out you guys did it really good job 👍🏻 I’m subbing for sure for tips
Wow now that's a beautiful floor. Looks great. Thanks for new idea for my business. How is it when weather is wet and people track water over floor. Does it get slick or keep its grip.
Great video floor came out beautiful. Would I be able to do this to my basement floor?
Yes you can!
I love concert work, that epoxy job looks great i want to learn it
My trainings are in The Concrete Underground.
Really liked this video! New sub with this video. Thank you for sharing this info.
Can i use that self leveler on an old basement floor i wonder . Where can I buy it and what is the sealer you used ? Great job 👏
Yes if you prep the concrete in advance. All kinds of companies make self levelers just Google it and find one local to you.
.
M
I actually want this in my house, looks damn nice
Looks great. I did marine guard 8000 100partz epoxy in my garage. Only thing is that it scratched very easy . How do you fight that prob?
An awesome video! I appreciate the information.
Did you guys need to seal it with a urethane or anything to resist scratches?
Looks amazing fellas!! Nice
Because the epoxy is such a high gloss, is it super slick, or is it a bit ‘rubbery’ like the floor coatings they sometimes put down on gymnasium basketball courts?
It's not slick at all when it's dry, a little when wet. It cures very hard, not rubbery at all.
Absolutely Beautiful
Hello and thank you for the video. Question for you about a top coat over the epoxy you did. Did you do a top coat like Polyaspartic or Polyurea to help in preventing dulling, UV, scratching or for ease of maintenance? How do you repair scratch in epoxy?
I looks like you could swim in it when finished! Amazing and beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
They actually make a spike roller for self levelers. Same idea, but the spikes more evenly break the surface tension.
Can I use that as my actual floor in my basement? Would I simply prep, prime and pour the leveler, then wait for it to dry and just paint it? I want to wear my socks in my basement and my kids to play down there without getting dirty. The house is 120 years ols with a 2" thick pitted and cracked up concrete floor. thanks and subscribed!
Wow Mike that looks great
Thanks Shane!
Looks pretty darn good. So that concrete leveler ... you can epoxy over it the next day? No waiting 30 days like regular concrete? Also, did you guys add an anti-slip additive to the epoxy?
How long the shine last? And how many years this floor will need a freshen up?
It all depends on foot traffic. A busy pub like this, refresh every 3 years or so. Just sand the surface lightly and apply another clear urethane and it looks like new again.
@@MikeDayConcrete looks awsome man.
Hi mr Mike my name is Raul I’m a home owner and I love the work you and your employees did to this restaurant.and I have a question about the paint who is the vendor on the paint can and how can I order this two colors.because I’m in California and I can’t find this colors.
Is there a clear top coat on that? Epoxy or urethane? Looks great
Yes, clear coat of urethane.
looks great! No issue with the leveler adhearing without running the grinder on it like the rest of the floor?
If you ever run into a situation where there is definite hydrostatic pressure... check out a product called Xypex High'n Dry. It's an amazing product. Kelly from Ontario
That's a helpful video! What type of primer with moisture blocker are you using? Is there no need to grind or score the leveler before adding primer? I was thinking about using a zero VOC 100% solids polyaspartic with coving for an indoor grow room. Please let me know if you have any specific recommendations!
Lovely floor
I'm using mapei self leveler. Should I run a grinder over it to open the pores before applying the primer? I'm anxious to get this done so I can move into my house...
thats great. If you wanted a more matt, marble look would you go over it with a very fine abbrasive on a buffer machine or can you get matt or satin finish with the epoxy in some other way?
Hey! This is Maine! Very cool!
