**Note the "good" examples begin at 5:30 with belters first, mixed voice examples second and classical examples 3rd.
Have you ever been confused by how certain singers achieve a specific style? What's the difference between "opera singing", "mixing," and "belting"? And how can we control our voice to change styles at will? In today's video I illustrate the concept of "tone placement". A way to control the voice without trying to directly manipulate movements in the larynx. Instead, we tap into the parts of the brain that DO control the voice and move our vocal structures and use that instead.

Not trying to be dramatic, but for someone who never learned the basics, I think this just changed my life.
Yes, mental plan and visualization is a key. For example, I'm a self-taught pianist, one day a pianist asked me how could I play a classical song without a music sheet? I said, I sang that song in my head while I played and it just let out on my fingers. He had paid $$$ all his life for piano lessons and no instructor ever taught him that.
To me that sounds like you have "perfect pitch" or at least a very well trained relative pitch hearing. I can relate to that experience you had there. The thing is that not many instrumentalists at all have this hearing skills so they need sheets. It's like you talk to blind people about colours. Seeing people can tell them which things have which colour, so can sheets to musicians without great hearing, but they themselves have at least a very hard time to really understand in depth what these colours/notes on the sheets actually are. So many people like the pianist you met can maybe play all the notes from sheets but them being able to play without sheets feels out of range for them.
Playing by ears and playing by sheet are different skills all together.. sheet needs theory and sight reading. Playing by ears needs pitch and sound hearing visualization skills.. only the rarest of rarest have both skills to great level... In my case I'm decent at sight reading and average at playing by pitch but somehow mix of both skills helps me
@@santhoshmusiclover4529 Of course you need to understand some sort of music theory and sheet reading first. Play a song with a sheet first, then play again without looking at the sheet.
Thanks for the nice explanations!!
Am am 60 years old and I have been singing in several choirs ! I love singing !!!
I have to credit Floor with teaching me how to belt...I was always too tense but after hearing how open she keeps things, I was able to adjust what I was doing and got good results. She has fantastic support and great ability to mix as well. All around an excellent singer!
I LOVE Floor Jansen!! And Sharon den Adel!! Symphonic Metal is one of favorite genres of rock. So glad I found your channel. I am a new subscriber!Thank you!1
that clip with Floor was so epic!
Great info. Love the x axis visual(s)! Thanks 👍
Great examples and instructions! Thank you.
4:48 I actually really like how the "wobble vibrato" sounds here though.
I didn't hear any "wobble" vibrato. Just tremolo.
That was so informative! Thanks for making these videos.
Yes, very very helpful
That part of mental picture is so interesting & awesome 👏
I think she chose that fast vibrato and her support was alright...and in the opera singing the larynx were lowered, just not all the way to the kermit the frog sound ^^
This is some of the best vocal info I’ve ever gotten on YT! Keep up the fantastic job❤
Wow, thank you!
Damn that woman Floor! Why does she make me cry every god damn time I hear her voice!? Honestly?
I always thought that "baby" opera singer had a Great voice! just not the right genre ;)
Exactly...good in the right genre, which is why style is so important! So that we don't get mistaken for being a "bad" singer because we're using the wrong style. :)
This video is really helpful . It has one problem that it can't be taken offline. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Agree plan, plan, and Plan
The last one is bonus😂
Rad. Thank You!
This video really helps in alot of things thanks
4:26 why does he look like a mixture of drake and josh
You're an awesome amazing teacher!
Thank you for your great and helpful videos. Many of them already helped me a lot. Although this one sadly is not accessible for me, because as a blind person I can't read text inside of videos. Text like the video title, the description, etc. can be read by my speaking screenreader software but it can't read graphic texts like in pictures or videos. So I'd highly appreciate, in the name of the entire blind community of thousands of internationally connected vocalists, if you either uploaded a version with spoken commenting or if you wrote all the commenting parts with timestamps into the description. That would help not only me but a lot of other people on the planet with a disability.
Thank you for your understanding.
My my..new things to learn everyday. Thanks so much!
Mental focus is important good video.I have to think of my sound going up high into my soft palate or it gets stuck lol
I'm looking forward to trying this out. I hope it works.
this is so good
Super helpful video thanks so much !
This actually helps alot.. wow thanks!
I love all tips and videos showing but actually the problem is that i do not understand how to sing mix voice through an angle
So for a male voice, you would do mixed voice in your falsetto range. So imitate the voices of the singers in this video. If you try to impersonate them you can visualize the note going at an angle. Good luck!
That opera sound is froggy to me.... could it be the same technique
WOW THIS IS VERY USEFUL TIPS. I have been trying to learn to sing, i couldnt find nice tone but by watching this, not only i found good tone, i also now know how to make different good tones.
Amazing vid. I'm a baritone (I've got a clear/full E2 but it's a bit quiet) that sings up to C#4 with "power". I sing in mixed voice I think. I keep larynx low/relaxed (throat open) and where my voice breaks (E4) I use more compression. I want to learn to belt and do the opera thang at some point!
That's a pretty normal Baritone/Lyric Bass range, good for you! If you watch my vocal compression video it might help get above the E4. As a Baritone, expect your "Belt"/forward/"power" range to end somewhere around G4 max. After that, you'll need to switch to mixed voice or vertical and use your falsetto. The male falsetto range, even for a baritone can be up to an octave higher than the belt/forward range. Best wishes!! And for Opera just imagine all of your notes going up through the top of your head, even the low ones. This will prevent you from "belting" or rock singing them. Thanks and good luck
Yep, I change gears around F#4/G4, less chest, more head. I need to work on (practice) taking large breaths quickly, in order to "stay on top" of the notes. Around C#4 (mixed voice, well supported, the top of my range), my "ah" vowel is good but I've been spreading my "E" vowel with the corners of my mouth. I'm trying to keep the mouth "long". I like to sing "Tool - Pot" and I can do it pretty well. I wish that I could sing the verse in "Strapping Young Lad - Detox" better. Actually I think my problem was "spreading" the "i" vowel, the note is a Bb4 ("I've got a feeeeee-ling..." ). I love the way he distorts his voice. I tried to learn the fry scream thing but I can't quite get my head around it. I'll stick to my growls seeing as I have a lot of natural bass in my voice. It sounds 25% like the cookie monster and 75% like the Michael Wincott in the Crow, on a good day. My fav lyrics to growl are Cannibal Corpse "stripped, raped and strangled". They are scary lyrics but they are fun to growl. I used to like Arch Enemy. We will rise was a nice song. Also Kittie used to do that fry scream a lot. It scares the bejesus outta me. I like it but I can't do it. Singing can get so technical, I love it.
Very helpful!
So In that clip of Bruno Mars singing "Grenade", was he not using mixed voice?
I love Sharon Den Adel
i really need to get used to making bad sounds, so i can play around with my voice. i can sing in my chest voice reasonably well, but i cant use my head voice. ive tried, but im doing several things wrong, and choking out the sound. i know it shouldnt be so much work to go high, but every time i try to relax this or that, i end up with zero breath support
Floor
You've begun this the same way that a person I highly respect began their own... "tutorials".
Have you read "The Voice of the Mind" by E. Herbert Caesari? He talks about the vertical. Very good technical book.
Does anyone know the name of the singer at 5:30?
very useful info
Could you do a video on vibrato?
Hi Matthew! Here is one I did a while back - hope it helps! I'll make another one soon :) ruclips.net/video/7DMgCyQkxqc/видео.html
Brava!
Thanks for journey
5:33 - song name or audition link? googling the lyrics doesn't help.
My singing journey has begun!
*[sees disclaimer at the end]*
My singing journey has ended!
Hi Mary I know this video is rather old but I'm learning the basics and I was wondering where should be the placement when singing low notes? Thanks!
forward like belting!
@@voicehacks Thanks a lot for answering! Be well
Thanks for putting this video together! I have a question about the clip you played of yourself singing. It sounds a bit breathy, so I was wondering if there is a vocal cord issue or if that was done for stylistic purposes. Or something else?
Where can I finding more of Lindsay singing?
She starred in the cast of Wicked
I love your videos. They are entertaining and informational. So mixed voice is singing up high? What about a lower mixed voice? Is there no such thing? Or is lower mixed voice coming strait out of the mouth?
Great video¬
What about things I've seen like the term singing " down on the note" from the top of the head with desired forward or backness to the mixed voice area or belting area ive been doing this for awhile is that right? Melissa cross also told me it can feel like the tone is coming from the eyes/Cheeks down to the straight out top lip area ? So is it a mixture of everything or am I making it to complicated ? Lol Also What kind of placement does chester bennington use?
However, thse singers are not very far away from singing brilliantly. They just need to be aware of some things they should tweak. They have a lot they can build on if they just change some factors that make the whole difference. Cool idea to use all these clips for demonstrating :)
If anyone thinks that watching a video teaches you HOW to sing then you don't understand singing, and like so many who we've seen, you don't hear yourself. If you can't sing (me and you and most of us) then it takes one-on-one instruction with an expert to actually change bad habits, etc, into good sounds. It's like anything else, it takes time, effort, instruction and money AND A NATURAL ABILITY (this is where I lost most teachers). Just that simple.
I understand we need to see what not to do, but this is so painful to watch.
Any tips to place the sound forward. I dont like my sound much and it feels stressful to my throat towards higher notes although I dont feel any direct pain.
Great question! Check out my "Belter Series" Playlist - this will get you started! ruclips.net/video/Dis5jPY7Jrg/видео.html and also keep in mind there's a limit to the forward placement. You can typically only maintain it up throughout your lowest 2 octaves. When you get to the top of your second octave, you'll likely need to flip into vertical or mixed voice (both falsetto placements). Some men can do 2.5 octaves of belting but at first, you'll likely have to stick with the 2.
VoiceHacks That was fast!! Im gonna check those out rn haha. I have a cover that I uploaded recently, could you possibly take a look at it (if you have time) and tell me what Im lacking/ need more of?
I always have this notion of never getting better. My normal chest tone sounds whiny to me a lot. Not fully developed i think
Does the placement change for a chesty mix or just the compression? Or both ?
Who's the Toby band at 6:25?
They’re called Edguy
I can't help but wonder if thats actually her in the video .
1:49 I think I am deaf now... I AM FRICKING 11 AND I CAN DO VIBRATO
I'm pretty sure you will embarrass yourself if you went for the audition...lol
Great video ! What's the name of the song at 6:26 ?
It's called "Save Me" by the German band, Edguy. Side note: I toured with this band when I was in Luna Mortis and I can say the singer, Toby is THAT good every. single. night. He is an incredible vocalist live and very consistent.
😂Y'all tone defffffff
I enjoy these videos, but I don't find them helpful and it makes me feel so stupid. But i just don't understand. When you say not to press your larynx down, i don't even know what that means in order to not do it.
:/
Maybe continuing on through the series will help.
If you're stupid, then I'm stupid. I've watched a load of singing videos lately and still have no real idea what 'breath support', 'mixed/chest/head voice', 'falsetto', 'vocal fry', 'soft palette', 'tone placement', 'cavity resonance', or 'positioning/relaxing the larynx' means. Now I'm being told to imagine the sound is going between my eyes! What?!
12.07 Sharon? her name Pls.
5:31 who is she? sorry
That's Linda Varg. Really great swedish artist!
Who's Sharon, she's awasome?
Sharon Den Adel - Within Temptation
5:30 singer name please
That's Linda Varg, and that's from the audition to the swedish TV show "Idol" in TV4. She performed her own song.
ruclips.net/video/BhscXe1WRHg/видео.html
I'm a coloratura tenor. My lowest is Eb2 its pretty clear and resonant and my belt/mix is B5 loud and clear and heady. My support range is E2 - E5 in chest but I'm practicing my technique and can I ask a question, is putting voice in the mask placement healthy or head placement healthy?....thx
Vocal Range Update*
D2 - B5 - F#6 - Bb7
camila // cc1 Are you a man with that range ?
justinlack Ikr thats like 3 octaves and 7 semitones or something
Oh my
Hamerica😂
Song at 6:27?
Edguy - Save Me
I sing with wobble vibrato - sound like a sheep lol - will have to focus on my breath support...
Damn Beyoncé is a god
I sing like the fat guy in red.
Beyonce is a bad example
patriziamusic stfu how is she a bad example? She clearly has THE best technique in contemporary music
