Was a mechanic at a dealer back then. Picked that exact bike out for myself to ride. I rode it a bunch every day. Traded it off and went back to bmx for awhile.
Awesome, I was looking to see this one. Great job on the filming, editing and the restoration.
Thanks so much! I’m a big fan of your work.
@oldshovel give @ cool bike projects a shoot out on your channel !
I'm big fun too...
questo minestrone di vecchio e nuovo fa schifo
Trek singletrack frames are awesome and run cool! I like them;)
Im so happy to watch this , found a trek 930 that someone chucked away, its a 1990 year frame , bike was rideable and great quality . My project begins
That is awesome! Best wishes on your project.
Nice RUclips Chanel!! Thanks!!
Thank you for watching!
I am 51 and really really want to get back into cycling. I have an early 2000s Saracen I got after my bike was stolen. Upgraded bits and bobs and it works well, but thinking about doing a resto-mod on it.
Those Trek 900 series are flat out awesome bike frames. They are straight and true. So easy to turn one into anything you want it to be. I recently had all the paint stripped off a '91 lugged frame 970 and was surprised to see Trek actually used expensive Silver brazing to attach the cantilever brake bosses to the frame. Now that is quality!
Agreed! Thanks for watching
@@CoolBikeProjects Thanks for the great video!
I love these trek steel frames. Incredible restoration
Thank you Damian!
Still bitter my 23.5 was nic'ed many many years ago. The shox were garbage but it fit my lanky self perfectly. Fav PJ of all time. Grip shift just makes ya smile.
Nice video, my old trek neko is calling me to do the same, looks like a great project this spring, thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for watching Norma and best wishes on your bike project.
On my 930 the only thing I changed was butterfly handlebars and raised them up. Bike is perfect for street beating.
Had an 830 with the same paint job as a kid...kept it into my 20s ...wish i still had the frame
Great job…awesome to see new life in older bikes
Thank you Lorenzo!
big fan, from New Zealand with love. More success.
Thanks brother!
Yehey! Ive found one of this today Trek 930 singletrack in jade green color with still a kickstand on it! been on a garage most of its life..
That is awesome. congrats!
My first ever mountain bike was in 1990 and it was an $199aud Repco 10 speed. It was steel, steel wheels, white with fluro yellow forks. I’d dream of stuff like this when I was a kid. I’ve just bought a vintage project, it’s a Gary Fisher Joshua X1. I can’t imagine what I would have done to own it back when it was new.
That is awesome! I remember when the Joshuas came out. I loved the paint schemes back then.
@@CoolBikeProjects Until I bought this one (actually, I’ve bought 2, shhhh) I’d never heard of, or seen one before. I really love their look though, it’s the shape I think of when I think of an awesome mountain bike. I was thinking I’ll build one up original, and maybe the other one I’ll respray in fluro yellow and pink, like a real 90’s badass type of 2 tone. I’m not sure though because I also love their look, perhaps I’ll make them reversed, like one black and white and the other white with black. Dunno. I’ll have to wait until they’re here and I can get a really good look at them. I’m excited though.
@@thesausage351 That is awesome! We are about a month away from announcing some big news for the channel, but if you would be interested in collaborating with me on one of the builds let me know. It sounds like a lot of fun.
@@CoolBikeProjects Hey man thanks for the offer! I’m in Australia though so that usually makes things hard lol. I’ll be watching though for sure, you do great work.
Really nice build. I feel the same way. Getting older but still have a blast every time I ride my bike. Thanks!
Hello Rusty!! Enjoyed your video even though I'm not a biker. Good job. I liked the reminiscing, the music, your thoughts. Well organized like all of your product.
Thanks Greg! You are very kind.
@@CoolBikeProjects Rusty, I am working on a trike project that might interest you. I could use your vast amount of knowledge too. Any chance of meeting with you in Idaho Falls for an hour or two?
@@gregseljestad2793 sure thing! Message me on facebook and we can set up a time. Thanks!
Good video I started riding back in 94 still riding today, my bike is a 95 giant iguana single speed setup
I actually have the same bike! I’m currently working on it as my mountain bike. Had it as a gravel bike setup but the geometry wasn’t my favorite.
I needed to see this! Been agonizing about whether or not to replace my Trek 930, which has taken me across Iowa 3 times since 2011, as well as other short and long-distance rides in Florida and Missouri. I love my 930 and have a special connection with it, as my cousin helped me with my purchase decision back in 1998. I decided on a tune-up and will take it back to Iowa this year for the 2021 RAGBRAI. It's not the fastest ride, but it's reliable and it makes me happy.
Thank you for sharing your story Laura. Sounds like you have a number of adventure left with your Trek :) Have fun at RAGBRAI!
I too have an original 930 (lightly ridden) that I bought in Iowa back in 98 or 99. Currently thinking about trading in, as I think the frame is a little small for me, but am beginning to think “keep it, swap out some components, and that awesome frame keeps living.
sweet restoration! its amazing how much a longer fork does to improve the geometry, looks almost modern!
Thanks Max!
I bought a 930 Frame as my dream build bike, might go one more and add disc brakes but still undecided. Thanks for a great video
That is Awesome! I would love to see how it turns out.
What rims and Tires did you use on this build?
@@kevinbeck473 Hi Kevin, I put on a used set of wheels from a Specialized Stumpjumper. Mavic 221 rims with Shimano/ specialized stout hubs. They were from 2001-2003 time. Great wheel set for the money if you are running rim brakes. Tires were Continental Cross Kings 26x 2.2"
Great looking bike .Trek 930 .Great hardtail .if it had a modern paint scheme no one would know its age
Thanks Nick. If the paint had been in bad shape I would have done that. But I’m also a sucker for two tone paint schemes 😎
I love the fact that you repainted the fork's legs! It really suits the bike. I'm considering doing the same with a vintage bike of mine, because the new fork I'm planning on installing is a bit bland. The original fork has that bare polished aluminum look, and I'd like to see if I can replicate it - or at least give the new fork a light silver metallic finish that would have it match the finish of the old stem and bars.
Subscribed now! I have a 1999 Trek 930 Singletrack (with upgrades made back in 2000 with marzocchi bomber). Was going to also do some modernization, so decided to search on RUclips and found this video. Great work!
Thanks for checking it out Evan! Guess what we have another Trek 930 video :) ruclips.net/video/cFxT8LNWhiE/видео.html
Great videos Rusty.
Glad you like them!
lol im watching a couple of videos on this model today, as I own one since new. Super job and great video production as well!
Thank you!
wow I'm so happy I stumbled over this channel. Great filming & production besides of course beautiful bike builds!
Thank you Nils!
Well you certainly know what you are doing - which is impressive. My favorite part is the filming (cinematography) because as much as I love watching restoration videos that are self-filmed (and I DO) the first 4 min of this video we SO enjoyable. Thank you for the time that you put in to this. Great watch.
Thank you very much!
Sick build man, really enjoyed that! Cheers

Thanks Scotty!
Checking out your video, noticed the frame sticker from Eddy's in Montrose, same as mine from 1993. Funny!
I actually tried to get a hold of the bike shop when I was doing this video. They have grown a lot since 93’ 😎
Great Bike! Perfect modern upgrades, Makes me want to update my Diamond back Apex
That is awesome!
I scored a 1991 for 75 dollars that has to cool tube inside bigger tube gussets or however you call it. It's a freakin fast bike.
Yes! Cat cameos make for the best youtube vids!
Awesome bike! I would love to find and restore one of these old steel Treks.
Thanks SB, I found this one on Ebay 🤫
Great job. I do wish you would have gave us a little time to admire the finished product.
Thanks Chance, I'll do better :)
Always a cool feeling
What size frame was this 930...?
I had one just like this in 1996..
Mine was a 16.5
Same - 16.5" I'm 5' 7'' so almost perfect size for me.
I have a trek 830 but damm its still a good bike, its even titanium so its solid offroad🤙
I washed my frame intense, absolutely drenched every surface with degreaser and cleared all the holes real thoroughly. Flushed and then used a truck wash both inside and out and repeat flushed all the grime out with high pressure water. Allowed to dry in the sun and after that a thorough spray with lanolin oil and tipped the frame every which way for 10 mins in the heat - it really digs into the steel and yeh rust - never 👌🏻
Rock On bro! Just threw $250+ at a 95' Mongoose Threshold Rigid CrMoly Tange frame.
Awesome Ray!
I regret selling this bike and red Hoo Koo Ekoo same era in mint shape 2 yrs ago.I have an 87 Bridgestone MB2 in red and green that never got used. Looks about 86-87 year. Maybe I should update the old school shifters to a 1X. Been considering.
Im seeing a lot of Bridgestones popping up recently. Great bikes!
Very interesting. Thanks for this...
Thanks for watching!
I have this same exact bike and would like to do similar upgrades. Saving your video for reference. I just bought a bike stand too. Thanks for producing this video

i really like seeing bikes that can be upgraded to V-Brakes.
Thanks for the great video. I am looking to do a similar restoration of my 1992 Trek Singletrack 970. Do you know if my project would accommodate the same bottom bracket set-up you used? Thanks.
Hi Roderick- I honestly don't know. It would be best to go to a trusted bike shop and ask them to measure things for you first before you buy something. Stand Bottom bracket shells were either 68mm or 73mm so that will be the first measurement you can check. Spindle lengths can be all over the place.
Deserving of 1m subs.
Ha ha, thanks Stuan!
Hey great film! I am a Trek steel frame lover too! A few yrs ago I bought a blue 1999 930 for 10 bucks, fixed it up (all it needed was new cables all around, some new tires/tubes, a grease job and a bit of fine tuning) and won my first race on it! Had a lot of time to ride back then, was between jobs at the time. Shortly after I bought a pink 1995 930 and restomodded it with some rigid forks, new pedals, street tires, and stem/bar off a modern Specialized. That one was a bit more neglected but it cleaned up very nice. Love the lugged frames from those earlier years, although the geometry isn't that great for descending but it doesn't matter to me since I turned it into an around town bike. For these old forks like the ones you put on this Trek, where do you go to buy rebuild kits/seals, etc for them?
Thanks for sharing your story Brandon, I was able to get some new seal kits from Jensen USA. There are some great connections though on RUclips if you check out butter suspension. He and a few others have some good contacts for seals and oil and things.
What a cool bike
Thank you Miguel!
I had a purple Trek 930 . Was purchased new back in 1993. It was stolen from my garage when it was less then 6 months old.......never bought another one. The other day I came across a 1994 Trek 850 SHX for sale In my frame size. Guy selling it said its been sitting for years in his utility room. Looked it over and the bike was dirty and cruddy but everything is intact with no damage . Frame has a few minor scratches , nothing major. No rust anywhere. Oh, and it had a kickstand LOL With a lot of cleaning and degreasing, plus some TLC its going to be a good ride and well worth the 35 dollars he wanted for it. If I decide not to keep it I will gift it to a deserving young kid that needs a bike. I think I may have found something new to keep me going at age 67.
That is awesome Mike. Sorry your original was stolen, but glad you have another. Bikes are so much fun. . .
Love it! Wonder what you could do with my Trek 750.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Ps. I'm eyeing a 1992 Trek 930, do you think it would be good for a retro mod or will I encounter any funky BB/headset standards ?
Thanks!
Hi there, It would make for a cool project bike but would most likely have the wrong geometry and a 1" headset so no real options for a suspension fork. Best wishes!
@@CoolBikeProjects cheers, thanks for the tip! expecting to use as a pub bike/light gravel bike so I guess the geo will be OK
And planning to run it rigid, but I hope it won't be a hassle to find 1" headset/forks
Saw the eddy's sticker. Are you in NE Ohio?
No, I bought it on eBay when I was living in Kansas. I am in Idaho now. I actually tried reaching out to the Eddys bike shop to see if we could collaborate on the bike story. Cool place!
your cat is dope!
Love the passion brother!
Amazing!

Great content keep it up your great love format audio and video editing top notch would recommend showing alittle bit more of installations of parts to be able to get idea on how to do it and name the components one by one.and then may be do reviews of items and also video on how you made 11 speed wheels and what hub was used?

Thanks for sharing this experience with us. I do wonder what cassette you ended up using? And how is the gearing for climbing. Also, did you put spacers between the crank spider and the chainring? It seemed like the chain would be hitting the crank with that chainring. Thanks
Hi Felix, I believe the cassette is 11-46 Sram GX. It came off of my Cannondale Hardtail One by 11. The chain ring is a narrow wide with built-in spacer. I can look up the part if you want.
make more these videos 😍😍😍
Thanks man. We have two more coming out soon!
@@CoolBikeProjects nice 💪
Is that the S-Works wheelset? Think the front was a Specialized Skraxle, and the rear hub was unbranded DT Swiss, both laced to Mavic 517s?
No this was the stump jumper wheel-set with the 221 rims. Still a nice set for their time.
Hi very nice bike!! .This Rockshox fork will fit on my Giant Granite (Sedona) 17inch frame 1991-1993 ?
I would suggest taking it to your local bike shop and seeing how much travel they think could fit on your bike. Unfortunately the early 90s bikes usually only had a 1 inch steer tube which really limits what kind of suspension fork you could put on there.
@@CoolBikeProjects to measure head tube diameter?
@@mygoalcrash8077 yes and the headtube angle
@@CoolBikeProjects old forks is 1icnh (( not good news(( maybe how big head tube shutbe?
@@mygoalcrash8077 late 90’s - mid 2000’s the standard was 1-1/8” . Early 90s to mid 80s was 1 inch standard. There are a few fork manufacturers that still make 26 inch inch and 1/8 steer tubes, and a few that make 1 inch just not very high end forks. Like I said I would check with your local bike shop to see what they would recommend.
I like the video I have a similar bike but it would’ve been nice if you display the bike a little bit more in the end
Thanks for the feedback Alex, I appreciate it!
Awesome! Can I send you my 930 for a custom job like that?
Hi Josh please contact me on the about link or instagram and lets talk about your project. Thanks!
Even though this video is older. I would like to mention. The original bike shop (Eddy's bike shop in North East Ohio,) which sold this bike is still open and I bought a Trek from them. The phone number on the frame sticker is still the same.
I actually tried reaching out to Eddy’s when I was making the video to see if they’d like to say anything about the bike or the shop and they never got back with me. I’m glad they’re still around though.
@@CoolBikeProjects Should of given a call. They are cool when you are on a call. They were amazing during the big drought of 2020. I found my 2021 Marlin 5. Not only were they helpful in letting me know about the drought. They helped me navigate that in fact it will take a long time to get an order.
So I suggest next time, with any bike shop. Give them a ring, instead of the e-stuffs. Eddy's picks up the ring pretty fast. Not so much on emails.. :) They have more than three locations and are legit OK. :)
do you think i can wheelie it
Going from a 63.5mm drop to 100mm drop seems significant. Was there any real negative to changing by this much? Would you recommend restricting it to 80mm instead?
Excellent question. This particular year of the 930 the geometry of the frame had the right head angle to accommodate the longer fork. It's best to set up a bike project with the fork in the frame and wheels on the ground to make sure the head angle is not pitched back too far. I am working on another bike project like this and experimenting with fork length to get the right angle. Sometimes you will need to keep it to 80mm.
It helps to know what the hell you're doing lol. Bought mine in Beaverton Or. 1997. Added Judys.. it's still in good condition, spends a lot of time on it's hanger. Prefer riding my MC these days, I must be getting lazy.
Thanks for checking out the video John
Great video. I have a 930 but I don't know what year it is. Any idea on how to determine what year mine was made? This is under the bike "WTU2258599P
T BI-0406"
There are a number of Trek history websites where you can punch in both of those serial numbers and I will tell you exactly what year it was made
What do you use to clean and polish frames?
Rock n' Roll "Miracle Red" - fantastic stuff!
Love your videos, you produce great content! I grew up in IF but never mountain biked back then. I need to come back and try out some of those trails.
@@jonathanorchard4444 thanks so much that means a lot!
What's the difference between the trek 930 and 920? I found a excellent condition 920 for sale
The trek 930 had a double butted steel frame. I believe the 920 was also a steel frame but with older geometry
Any chance at an item list? I have a 930 that I found in the garbage that I combined old parts for and have had on the trail numerous time, but would love to have a suspension fork, new headset, and 1x11 cassette. I just do not know what parts are needed.
Sure thing, Ill add a list to the description over the weekend.
@@CoolBikeProjects ok so me and my son dug into our 1995 single track 930. we went cheaper with a Wake 780mm bar, headset, we stuck a quill adapter in the original fork (we don't have a shock just the original forks) New Shimano Linear pull brakes, and kept the old cassette and cranks for now, just want to ride the thing...But i had to order a new bottom bracket. one item I have a question about, When you ran the cable for the rear brake, did you enclose it for the length of the top of the frame and then what did you do once you got to the seatpost are that has that built in tube the old brake line went through? We thought it would be too tight a bend to go from that welded on tube guide so we used a hose clamp and mounted a section of cable sheilding to the frame? picture of that area would be of great assistance.
Thanks. the inspiration was perfect. Eventually the parts will find their way into our lives that turn it in to a 1x11, bu ti told my son, with this age of bike, the less you spend, the more fun I have....
@@KAlone321 That is awesome! Way to go guys. Since I went to a 1x11 I was able to borrow the cable guide that went to the front derailer as a stop. You don't want to use the tiny brake tubing by the seat post as you said it will be way too tight. I would suggest running the brake housing as a solid line from the level to the v-brake with noodle. If you want a cleaner line you can use some stick on brake guides just as a guide. If you are happy with your hose clamp then keep it. I found these guides here: www.amazon.com/Xmomx-Derailleur-Fitting-Housing-Durable/dp/B07YTZXPTJ/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=cable+guide+bike&qid=1627305255&sr=8-5 for about $8. I have sold the bike to a friend and don't have an image of it. If you email me, I'll get a picture of the brake line from him. Thanks! rustysbikerepair@mac.com
Fantastic upgrades! I'm considering upgrading my 930 (bought new in 1990 or so) as well. What cassette did you use?
Thanks Fred, I believe this was a sram 11spd 11-46 tooth cassette.
Hi, I am a professional mechanic and i want to start into doing some vids for RUclips. I like the style of this vid - can you share with me what you used for a camera, mic, lighting and how it was edited i.e. what software you used for it? Any tips would help a lot! Thanks, and great video! Ron at Velocity Bikewerx.
Hi Ron, thanks for reaching out. This was one of my first videos for the channel so not a ton of gear was used for it. I had a mirrorless camera with a decent zoom lens 24-70mm. Lighting was a just the over head lights in the garage, audio was done as a voice over recording with a Rode Video Mic GoII powered by usb-c to the computer. I edit in Final Cut Pro. Best wishes on starting your channel! Tips: 1- Let the camera roll and edit out or speed up the unnecessary parts. 2- Change up angles as often as you can, so the audience can see the details. 3- record as much sound as you can. Some people like the sound of the ratchet or the sounds of the bolts loosening. 4- Be cool to everyone. It takes a while to build an audience, so respond to everyone and don't take criticism personally.
I know where a Trek Antelope is parked in the Great Dismal Swamp. It belongs to me but I am not going back for it.
Great job, how old is that and how old is the trek badland special edition was iron too, I had badland trek special edition in the 2004 i bought by owner in Evanston IL, work good but someone stolen from me I feel sad but is okay, in 2009 i moved from Chicago to Pennsylvania and then I bought a trek 3500 I got in Hampton used the same history from owner his son went to the university he didn't used, I bought for a one hundred dollars was a good deal he want more but I tell to him I need to buy some components and lowered the price, I bringing to Mexico still working good, I having from twelve years. Really enjoyed the restoration, mods and ride. What size frame is it? I ask because I have the chance to purchase an 18in 930. I am 5'11" with a 32" inseam. I am wondering if the frame might be too small for me? You look good on the bike. How tall are you? Thanks.
Hi Kathy, Thanks for reaching out. This was a 16.5" frame. I am 5'7'' so this fits me well, particularly with the taller fork. The 18" might be be a tad on the small side for you, but without seeing one built up it's hard to say for sure. You might check with your local bike shop to get their thoughts with your measurements. Best of luck.
I'm 6 feet tall and with set back seatpost and long stem 120mm I made 18 inch fame fit me a gt tenquesta if it's good shape and price is good I say go for it just expect alot of seatpost showing and the bike to feel small for your size but it could be great bike to ride around town with the kids on bike paths or as errand grocery better with couple racks or rainy day bike with fenders

@@CoolBikeProjects in the process of finishing up my 930 but running into cable routing issues for the rear brake - do you use that little tube on the seat post if you convert to V brakes? I have been just routing some hosing around it but I think its causing a kink or something because the brake lever doesn't spring back when applying rear brake now. May end up taking everything apart first and making sure it is well lubricated and the spring tension on the caliper arms is strong enough. Cheers!

Nice looking bike but poor quality control or poor transport.Rear wheel has major issues right out of the box. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Rear axle is bent! Derailleur is misaligned.Since the rear wheel comes assembled I would have expected better.Assembly instructions poorly written, but that was not unexpected...just annoying.I just had the bike checked at a shop and was told that I should contact the seller about getting a whole rear wheel assembly with cartridge. (The bike shop could not do anything to help me).Not a good experience with this bike, so lesson learned.Added 3 stars for excellent customer serviceUpdate Sept 8 2020Just received a complete replacement wheel for free. Great service and an otherwise fine bike.
Yes, the bike runs great.
