Nice re-build....Trek and Specialized MTBs were the best! One tip for removing oxidation from chrome parts....instead of using abrasive materials just spray the part with WD40 and gently rub off the rust and oxidation with crumpled up aluminum foil. It starts a chemical reaction which transfers the unwanted coating to the aluminum without removing the top chrome finish layer. Abrasives remove the finish which guarantees more oxidation, in some cases within hours. Thanks for the zen video!
I have a very similar ‘95 Mountain Track 830shx in the same red, and did a restoration on it a little over a year ago. Ride it frequently. Great bikes! Good for another 30 years
Wow, it came out looking really nice. Glad to see others keeping these on the road ... err trail. Still have my '95 Trek 930. Bought it new and still ride it as much as the other bikes.
Beautiful. You and your twin brother are doing a splendid job. I just picked up a 1995 Trek 930 Singletrack two days ago from a friend's son, after he bought a new Trek. The 930 is getting overhauled in my LBS and I have gone in to do some of the work (I don't have any workspace to do it myself in my small flat). I hope it looks as good as yours does! Thank you for posting this video, it is very well done. Dr Sudevan Wisconsin
Thank you so much! Good luck on the overhaul! It will be worth the hard work and effort as it will expand the life and provide an endless amount of fun after.
Right on, another one saved ! Great job, awesome video ! I dig that you left the goodwill price tag on there ! I Hunt and hoard old Treks and old mountain bikes in general and try to leave the prices on the too ! Such a great feeling Of accomplishment when you resurrect one of these old dogs
nice work Tomi! It was cool to see the inside of a suspension fork. What is the purple thing inside the fork? What do you use to clean the bike frame? What do you use to clean all the metal components? How do you wash your grease rags? You're the best.
Thanks!! That purple thing is called an elastomer and that was the thing that actually makes the suspension work! suspension has come a long way from this old fork. Just simple degreaser/alcohol to clean the frame. and white lightning degreaser to clean all the dirty components!
I got the exact same bike cleaned mine all up too and just this week changed the cranks first time for me. Love this bike also have an old 830 antelope which I'm planning to restore too
Quality video Tomi just watched this and the specialized and really hope that this is the beginning of something for you.. sharing these and many more bikes with us all..after just a few vids you are already putting out stuff of the same quality as "old shovel" once again keep up the great work 👍 from the 🇬🇧
What a nice looking bike. And after the clean up really amazing. On Friday i can get an old Specialized Rockhopper Comp. Can't wait to rebuild this bike . Stay well budy, best regards from germany. ✌😁👍
@@CowboyTomi oh i can't wait till friday. I enjoy the Bike rebuild it is relaxing time and to ride these bikes still so much fun. Stay well and still ride in a peacefull nature. Best Wishes and regards from germany ✌😁
Really nice work on this bike, mate. I came here driven by the youtube algorithm and enjoyed watching! Only reason this is not in the top 5 of bike-overhauling-videos for me (like RJ the bike guy and Oldshovel) is the bit of rust you left on the crank bolts and the bolt on the stem. Oh, and that brake cable on the front brake is killing me. It physically hurt to watch you leave that thing installed :-) ...but we know how it is sometimes, when working on bikes. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, I have the exact same Trek 930 in the same colour! and also having stand fixings. Not seen another with stand fixings before, such a well made frame and a great touring MTB.
Great job! just saw this and the Hardrock. I have a similar HR in black and yellow gonna built it soon. You and Old Shovel have great vids keep it up. So many great bikes out there. I hit the thrift shops, goodwills and estate sales. They are usually neglected or forgotten about but the parts are almost always good and wheels true because low mileage. Used bikes are a goldmine because so much of our population would rather stare at a smart phone rather than wrench or ride? Blessings on your garage Sir!
So true! Thank you so much! keeping my hands busy and then keeping the legs busy right after is the best feeling! It feels great giving these bikes new life and sending them out to those who need it!
Question. How did you figure out which tools to use to remove the bottom bracket. The attachment to unthread the bottom bracket. The attachment that you used in minute 2:39. It seem like there are different models for each bike. I have a Trek 930 also that I am saving for my neighbor's kid once he grows out of his BMX bike.
Almost reckonize one dude ...I think I've seen him around. And I lived on Bhill for years . I'm older for sure but heck if there isn't a kindred connection. I just got into this a year ago and mad stuff was jacked this last 12 months. Hope to see ya out here
Nice job ,I have a RUclips channel called Chricha bikes doing the same sort of thing over in the UK ,your early mountain bikes are much better equipped than ours but I think I'm right in saying your environment probably tested them harder
New subscriber here, thanks to YT's algorithm. That's a beautiful red; I hope your brother at least bought you dinner for all that work. :-) My '95 930 is the fully rigid blue to green fade, and I love it to bits.
@@CowboyTomi dude, I'm jelly!! I've been looking for a quality vintage step through mtb for months!! If you Google Pretty Purple Princess Penelope my baby shows up. XD
hey Tomi I’m a big fan of your vids! was wondering what solution do you use to clean to components like the brakes and derailleurs? is it just degreaser or wd40 or something?
It went together easily in less than an hour. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Good job on the overhaul. Your bottom bracket is on backwards. The cartridge side should go on the drive side because the spindle is longer on that side. Oh, and I also have a twin brother. I wish we were close though.
thank you! the BB is actually on correct. I was skeptical at first when I did take it off, but the labels indicating Left and Right is there and followed. And that’s awesome! I hope for the best for you guys.

I recently acquired a '94 Trek 930 and it has the same components but with a rigid fork. This video will be helpful in my own restoration. Thanks!
I have one also giving to me wth brakes and grpshifers but now I want rapid fire thumbshifters . So then I can upgrade grips .....
I really liked how you kept the good old parts. Most other guys always modernizing, but this was refreshing if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

A good tip to keep the shock boots up in place and not fall down is to put a zip tie tightly at the top of the boot.
