I've always just held everything upside down, and banged the end of the PVC pipe into the garage floor. No risk of damage, plenty of impact force that's easy to control.
Hi Seth...I just love this flip bikes. I know what you're going to say and do..its always a change to 1X drive train ( eventhough you admit a 2X or 3X is as good) and always a shorter stem and wider bars ( eventhough the old short top tube geometries may not suit everyone)..but I keep watching and want to do my own flips.. the part I love the best..is staring at the bike...I do that every time I come back from a ride. Thanks and keep up the good work...keep the flips coming.
This was my second Berm Peak Video and I become not only a subscriber but also a fan! You do a very nice job and you seem to be a nice guy too! I really like to watch how aged bikes are send back on trail and I appreciate the fact that you also reuse old parts.
Only issue... you mention lifetime warranty. But that only applies to original owner. The person you sell it to will not have a warranty. And if you were second owner, you didn't have a warranty, either. Just pointing that out so you don't accidentally mislead someone.
Hey Seth, I wouldn't suggest using those IXF Cranks. Had a set in blue that failed catastrophically while riding at college. To be more specific, the sprocket side crank arm snapped at the spider mid climb and took out a hunk of my leg. My freshman engineering professor (also a MTB'er) pointed out that it had failed due to a crack that widened itself out. Also, the set arrived with the sprocket side crank not properly anodized.
maaaan... thats mad. no one realised how smooth the end was..... golden touch up with the chain, kashima boot spacer??? and the ergons were the cheery of the cake..... respect and spread love
Good luck getting the two edges on that hand-cut stem spacer parallel and square! You can even see in the video that they are not. Everything else hid did was good, but I wouldn't encourage anyone to make their own headset spacers unless you want to reduce your headset's lifespan significantly with uneven loading or if you have some precision cutting/finishing machinery.
I love all your videos of rebuilding bikes you inspired me to start doing it again and since you first video doing this I’ve done 5 bikes now and made a really good profit of them. Thanks for sharing all your content buddy
My first good mountain bike was a 2019 trek marlin 5 which I got in Vermont for 550 plus tax. It’s awesome, I still have it, and I think I might keep upgrading it, just to see what happens
Love this series and seeing all the different bikes that get restored. Pls keep flip bike episodes coming! But as someone that has worked at a trek dealership for years, that frame unfortunately only has a lifetime warranty for the original owner. :/
Thanks Seth. You make the video look so easy to understand and process. I do know it takes time when you put your hands on bike to fix and repair yet you are so much inspirational that I want to jump on and do. I remember first time I saw your video, I finished all the videos and digging all of your videos. Now I have been watching your channel over 3 years and I learned a lot. Now I am dealing with neighbours, friends and their friends in my locals for bike tune ups and repairs. First flip bike for DB was one that I am dealing with most in my garage shop since I have so many seniors dropping by with their old classic bikes. Well, now the trends are eBike for seniors and I was wondering if you happen to try convert one of your bike to eBike. That would be fun contents that you may interest. Anyway, thanks again for awesome videos and helpful tips.
In U.S., new is dirt cheap, but used is expensive... go figure... in UK, u would be lucky to get any money for it before it was flipped...probably be a freecycle bike....
Bingo! This is true of most bike brands. As a bike shop employee, I often have to break the bad news to the second owner of a now-broken bike that they have no warranty.
treks newer than 2020 get a lifetime warranty for the first owner and a 3 year warranty from original date of purchase for second and subsequent owners, models older than that get a lifetime warranty for the first owner and nothing for subsequent owners
Same here mate ! A little bit less expansive than the (magnificent and overbuild) Parkside dedicated tool for this one time job ! Also I made my own headset cup remover by cutting a metal pipe at one end and bending outwards the sides. I bet you know what I'm talking about.
You gotta move closer to me so I can get some of those sweet sweet deals on bikes! I really don't get the adding up all the costs in parts when the true value is in all the skill, talent and passion you bring to fixing up the bike. That is priceless~!
Personally I think Seth is getting really lucky with these sales, 640 is still steep for that bike, I get there are some decent parts on it like the rear mech, but you can buy a much more modern bike for that money used.
Man I gotta find out where you are, in the UK where I am any mtb in usable condition made in the last 8 years is expensive as hell rn, and that's nothing compared to back in lockdown
Well to all those points, I'm pretty sure a trek roscoe 6 within the last 3 years is like 800 rn where I am so although that is expensive for what a roscoe 6 has, it isn't much more than the 700 Seth was asking
This turned out pretty well. I noticed the iXF crankset on this Trek. I bought some last year from Amazon UK which came with a bottom bracket. This was replacing a Shimano octalink BB which I fitted weeks earlier and the 22, 32, 42 chainring. The iXF bottom bracket was too tight for the spindle so I ended up buying an el Gallo bottom bracket which beautifully matches the red iXF crankset. Paired with a Snail 36T oval then 36T round chainring and recently replaced chain and cassette my 2010 Specialized feels like a new bike. I did notice a difference between oval and round. Oval seems slightly easier going up inclines and round is faster on the flat. The iXF crankset is not top notch by any means. But for my weekday road ride to work it suits me just fine.
I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now , this is awesome. After looking at new ones for a bit I actually just found and bought this exact Gary fisher trek marlin off marketplace. I think I paid around 150 for it but it had hardly been ridden by an much older guy just around camp grounds and kept inside. Same color and everything too. From my research I think it’s a 2012 . This video helped me so much because I have been wondering what I could do to it . Thank you so much for your videos 😊
Yeah, but when he says, Trek has lifetime warranty frames he means that they are a super solid brand, confident in their product. Not that this particular bike has a lifetime warranty. It's just a way to say it's an excellent frame
Hey Seth I have a question about painting seats. Don't you think after a while of constant riding that the paint would rub off on someone's pants eventually? I was always curious of that every time I see you painting a seat.
Hi Seth, got a question. I know it's a flip bike, but it's a size large, so mechanical brakes are just not safe when you have some extra pounds. A pair of basic shimano or magura brakes, or even the popular in Europe - shigura ( shimano lever with a magura caliper) would be better and safer. First step of having fun is to have control in order to learn learn. cheers mate!
I kind of agree. But being someone how has had a bike with cable and hydraulic(same bike i swapped to hydraulic because i couldnt get pads) cable breaks are more then enough to cause the tire to lock up and slow you down. Granted they are not as easy to keep from locking up and need some force at times. I wouldnt say they are unsafe.
Instead of flipping outdated xc bikes you should do some early 2000s clasic full suspensions like the norco shore or the kona stinky. That would be sick!
Seth, this is very minute, but an easy step to increase the longevity of quality would be to apply clearcoat both under and over instead of just over the stickers. That way, if and when the sticker does fall off it will be the same glossy finish as the rest of the bike.
Worse in my area, got a used 2011 specialized rockhopper for 500. I spent over a year looking for something decent and that was it. More than the bike blue book but there hasn't been anything cheaper.
Awesome video! I'm rebuilding my Trek Marlin right now after a winters worth of wear, decided to but a Box group set on it because of your videos, keep it up!
I don't get how you're selling bikes like this for this much, at $640, mechanical brakes, a suntour coil fork, and that much age on a bike should have made it sell for a lot less. Around me you can get a late 00s or early 10s full sus with air suspension and hydraulic brakes for that much
Different markets all around the country and the power of being a good seller. The way he photographs and describes the bike in the ad helps immensely. Some people are just not good sellers and will do one or two crappy photos and no details in the description. There’s a lot of money to be made just by flipping stuff with better ads.
I enjoyed how you brought life into this old bike. Back in the day I bought the Mamba (same basic bike but purple/black paint scheme) and put on 700 x 3500 Kenda Cyclocross tires. With a locked out fork it works great on gravel rail trails/ blacktop. On a side note -I like the background music in your videos …keep up the good work!
I bought a marlin for my wife in 2019. it was her first good bike and her first mtb. Since then she rides it dayli to work and home in every condition and also on weekend with me on some trails. This bike is so good and for its price unmatched. I mean u get internal cable routings in this price thats amazing
I've been somewhat impatiently waiting for this one when I saw it in the background of one of your other videos. I have the same bike and actually converted it to a one by as well with the same exact crank. Fun watch!
5:56 Spray glue or tape the sand paper to a piece of glass or MDF. Then rub the brake rotor on them while pushing down with your whole hand. You will get a more even sand due to the flat surface backing and even pressure.
It's the everyone's favorite series! It's like doing a great public service what you are doing. I wish there was a one Seth at every city of every country. Nice job as always Seth. The Trek Cross Country models from this era hold a special place for me- they’re what I start riding on (2014 X-Cal). My brother in law and buddy both had/have Marlin’s, by bro has an X Cal, I built a Cobia for a good friend and two of my other buddies have/had X-Cal’s all 2011-2014 models. They’re great bikes and I still ride mine regularly (very upgraded). I would highly recommend any of these mile mashers to anyone getting into the sport or as a gravel option.
That is a proper nice looking bike; I'd buy it because I love Trek bikes. The only thing I'd swap out is the cable brakes to hydraulic. I love these bike flip vids; they inspire me, though I'm probably never going to get into flipping bikes.
Hussefelt stem on a tourer bike is such a flex! Pricing though is a bit crazy for the rest of the parts, but absolutely worth the work
It's impressive how well you clean these bikes up. Very satisfying to watch.
I always use a mismatched colour for the quicklink on my chains - makes it easier to find later!
This is a really good series, one of my favorite to watch on youtube
I feel like paint on the flexible seat material is just gonna fall apart and ruin whoever’s riding it’s shorts
absolutely
Love these flip bike episodes and how much effort you put into every bike. Please keep on with this ✌️
Hey Seth, I wouldn't suggest using those IXF Cranks.
Can’t wait for the trail building season! :D
hi
I moved from Waynesville to NW Montana last year, and I've gotta say I miss NC. Watching your videos feels like home!
I know next to nothing about bikes, but I had that same question. I am mechanically inclined though.
Seth, I have been LOVING your flip bike series! great job!
I always use a different color master link (gold) on a dura chain, makes it easier to find when I take the chain off for a cleaning.
Won't the frames warranty only apply to the first owner? I've never heard of second hand bikes being covered.
Thanks Seth. I just followed your lead an re-did my 2012 Marlin. Looks great, rides even better.
I used a PVC pipe with a cap and a mallet to set my crown race and it works pretty well. Really like the use of the Fox fork for the spacer!
Glad to see someone else agrees, it had cable brakes… that alone would mean I wouldn’t pay more than £300 for it, especially for a bike that age
You're probably right, but at the same time this bike does get the "trek tax" plus used prices vary more than you'd expect based on your location
Well to all those points, I'm pretty sure a trek roscoe 6 within the last 3 years is like 800 rn where I am so although that is expensive for what a roscoe 6 has, it isn't much more than the 700 Seth was asking
Right now at chain reaction you can buy a 2021 vitus nucleus vrs for £599 with free UK delivery.
The rear tire is not mounted correctly, the "v" shape made by the tire's tread should point to the front
I run my rear backwards on purpose. I get better climing traction
You sir make quality builds! My favourite part about your channels, bringing the old into the modern 👍
I just got a brand new 2022 trek marlin seven
Same here lol
Who?
When?

I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now , this is awesome. After looking at new ones for a bit I actually just found and bought this exact Gary fisher trek marlin off marketplace. I think I paid around 150 for it but it had hardly been ridden by an much older guy just around camp grounds and kept inside. Same color and everything too. From my research I think it’s a 2012 . This video helped me so much because I have been wondering what I could do to it . Thank you so much for your videos 😊
I thought trek frames only had a lifetime warranty if you were the first owner.
that's correct, once sold the warranty is null and void
Yeah, but when he says, Trek has lifetime warranty frames he means that they are a super solid brand, confident in their product. Not that this particular bike has a lifetime warranty. It's just a way to say it's an excellent frame
@@geoffbaker4625 thats Not true, the warranty gets down to 6 years
The grips are a nice touch, I love the color coordination touch you put to the bike. Keep the positivity going!
Hey Seth I have a question about painting seats. Don't you think after a while of constant riding that the paint would rub off on someone's pants eventually? I was always curious of that every time I see you painting a seat.
I preferred the saddle unpainted 😉
Love flip bike Seth my favourite playlist on RUclips. All my friends out in Canada watch you
Instead of flipping outdated xc bikes you should do some early 2000s clasic full suspensions like the norco shore or the kona stinky. That would be sick!
Seth, this is very minute, but an easy step to increase the longevity of quality would be to apply clearcoat both under and over instead of just over the stickers. That way, if and when the sticker does fall off it will be the same glossy finish as the rest of the bike.
11:54 Who's dog is that?
I have now watched all of the flip bike videos and I need some more 👍 keep up the good work
$700 for an older bike with outdated geometry is pretty crazy, but if someone's willing to pay it...
$650 for a Marlin with an Amazon crankset and a base Suntour fork. I feel bad for that dude
yup...
I purchased a brand new 2022 marlin 6 with a deore crankset for $700. This was nota good deal.
Quality of your videos and talking points are top notch. keep it up
I don't get how you're selling bikes like this for this much, at $640, mechanical brakes, a suntour coil fork, and that much age on a bike should have made it sell for a lot less.
I'm guessing they get a discount for singing a model release form & appearing on the videos
Finaly
More Flip Bike Episodes would be appreciated, definitely your best content by far!!
Goat
Awesome work. Just got my flip bike sweatshirt today in the mail. Thanks it’s awesome!
700 dollars and not even hydraulic brakes??
These flip bike videos are very satisfying to watch!
I’ve been waiting so long for flip bike!
Fun watch!
The right kind of bait and switch! Another class act from Seth. Great video.
Absolutely love watching the flip bike stuff! Keep them coming !
Hello! I love the Flip bike episodes, I am flipping vintage road bikes :).
I will always be a fan of every content here on flipbike. hope to see more.
5:56 Spray glue or tape the sand paper to a piece of glass or MDF. Then rub the brake rotor on them while pushing down with your whole hand. You will get a more even sand due to the flat surface backing and even pressure.
Just like lapping the sole of a plane!
So love the flip bike series. I learn so much from it.
We need MORE of this series SETH keep on your great videos and job
9:28 scene cut to sam pilgrim smashing on a set of fox 40s to some 1990s gravel bike using a hammer or rock to smack the race and bearings on
Flip Bike is the best series you have on this channel.
I missed the flip series. Please keep doing more.
Bike looks completely transformed!! Excellent job
It's the everyone's favorite series! It's like doing a great public service what you are doing. I wish there was a one Seth at every city of every country. Really learning along these how to service bike parts and get life back to those that are beaten! If you could add a little segment for one episode of how you tune up used bike (brake, drivetrain) that would be awesome! Really thinking I should service my old bike to get back to road after all these years.
I'm an English teacher in Italy and actually talk to a lot of my students about mountain biking because where I live, there are so many amazing trails that many of them want to try out but think they can't afford it.
It just goes to show that you can ride without an exaggerated cost. Keep it up, Seth; you're an inspiration.
Yow been watching your videos using my personal account. Find it entertaining while waiting for my new bike, I’m saving for it. In gods name I will be able to ride again. Hit a major setback in life. Keep uploading bruh, very entertaining. Uplifting
These type of bike videos no matter the discipline are my fave. Keep them coming.
So much time, skill and effort put into these bikes comparatively for what they sell for. What a legend!
Literally just wants to get everyone out there on some wheels! 👏🏾👍🏾
After watching Flip Bike always wants to get a new challenge and overall an older bike. Thanks Seth!
