    Mate you are absolutely smashing it! You must be loving life. Really interested to hear what your interactions in a pack like that are like… are you all in the zone and keeping it short and to the point about target times/tactics? Or is there any random chat going on?? Cheers, Jack

    Nice one Ben, I reckon an experienced marathon runner is looking at low 2:20s with that half so sub 2:30 is definitely what you're really thinking 😉

      Yeah, if he keeps at it at this rate he's going to end up an elite at majors.

    Well done!
    HM pace - 3'14" / km
    Rule of thumb to get marathon pace - add 8 seconds / km
    Being conservative, first marathon - add another 3 seconds / km
    Estimated marathon pace:
    3'25" / km
    Estimated marathon time:
    2h24"05
    I think you're capable of achieving this. No pressure to go under 2h30. And will still be a massive accomplishment if you go under 2h35.
    But, seriously, your current level of training and your recent HM PB point to a sub 2h25

    • @RunForPeace-hk1cu
      @RunForPeace-hk1cu 2 года назад +4

      8s/km*42.2 = ~5:40 ... nah ... that's WAAAAAY too optimistic for the marathon distance unless you are absolute elite. Many pros who run 1:02-1:05HM couldn't even crack 2:10-2:17
      8secs is the THEORETICAL max under ideal conditions, perfect training / execution / pacers / weather .... which never happens.
      Since this is his first marathon, anything under 2:30 is amazing. The risk of bonking is quite high if he push his limits.

    • @brrrrett
      @brrrrett 2 года назад +2

      @@RunForPeace-hk1cu That's fair. Either way we're only estimating. And you're correct for being more conservative. No need to add pressure.
      But, its damn exciting to estimate a best possible outcome that is achievable. And I do think a sub 2h25 is possible. Probably 2h24'58 rather than a low 24.
      We saw Seth Demoor and Nick bester achieve similar results.
      Seth's HM pace leading into Rotterdam was 3'16". His marathon time was 3'23".
      Nick' HM pace was 3'08" and his marathon 3'20".
      Both Seth and Nick have a bit more experience running marathons than Ben. But even so, both Nick and Seth are still new to road marathons.
      Seth has a completely different training style to Ben. He runs many more easy kms. And because of his long career in mountain running, has great aerobic capacity. Its partly why he's dead on the 8sec/km conversion.
      Nick and Ben are more similar in their training approach. With Nick maybe even pushing it a bit harder than Ben more often. And his gap was 12sec/km.
      Let's see. Either way, respect to Ben for the tremendous effort he's put into training. And we're supporting his first marathon run regardless of outcome.

    • @RunForPeace-hk1cu
      @RunForPeace-hk1cu 2 года назад

      @@brrrrett I’m sorry, but I don’t think you know much about marathon running. You’re just reading off hypotheticals and what others say without any real world experience.
      Seth’s HM PB is 1:05 and he used the HM as his training run hence he ran much slower. Seth self admittedly confess that he’s not an marathon expert so I wouldn’t use him as “the template”.
      Seth is a much better runner than Ben. Sorry but it’s true.
      It’s pointless to try to project Ben’s potential based on other people’s progression and extrapolate that onto Ben.
      Ben is Ben. He’s not Seth or Nick.
      Ben is a newbie who happens to have a lot of natural talent but it’s raw talent.
      Nobody really knows to be honest. It’s a hit and miss how a person responds to the marathon distance.
      But looking strictly at 1:08 as his “theoretical max HM speed”. Anything under 2:30 is a good first time showing.

    I know it's a great opportunity Ben, But do you not think the Boston trip will impact your Marathon in Copenhagen? with only 4 weeks to go.....I'd say with a 68 flat half, potentially 2:23-2:27 is possible...even with sub optimal last 4 weeks a sub 2:30 must be on your mind 🤔That's good for top 20 ......although, I think you're wise to put out 2:34:59 and anything else would be the cherry 👍🦾🏃❤

    Great video mate! Do you have any specific advice for me to how I should train for a half marathon? I’ve just gotten into running but I’m not too unfit. I can run a 20 minute 5k and I’m 15. And this past month I’ve been running about 50km a week. As I said I’m totally new to running recreationally, so I don’t really know how to train/ what to focus on. Any advice?

    Congrats Ben, just amazing!
    Question: was wondering what your (or anyone else’s reading this comment) heart rate was like throughout the race?
    I am training for a marathon too right now. Did 6ks at Marathon pace today and my heart rate was hovering around 160-165 in the 5th and 6th kilometre, which is feel is way too high. Especially if I have to keep this effort up till 42ks. Could it be that I am aiming for too quick of a time? I’m about 3 weeks into my 16 week training plan. Appreciate any help. Thanks
