I was training for 5&10km simultaneously, and the hate I got online for running 2 x 10*400m (8km) at goal pace 🤦 thank you for clarifying that it is OK to run further than 5k at target pace. Not that I would stop doing it, but it's nice to have an elite runner say the same thing 🙌
I watched this video a while ago and I don’t think I really got it the purpose until now. The main thing you’re trying to say is that we need to make sure we’re incorporating varied training stimulus in our plans and not just have it all at race pace or threshold because it’s that variety that helps to keep the body adapting. I really like the idea of trying to move the whole speed curve forward as you try to reach your goal. I think the first time I watched I was expecting you to spell it out and tell me exactly how to train or what sessions to do, but I think I realize now that I need to take a more holistic approach to training and just find sessions that others are doing that work for me as long as I’m making sure to hit different spots along that fitness curve.
Your videos are getting better and better my friend. Your becoming more comfortable with the camera. Great work. Im putting all my chips into this big race in September. Thanks for the advice
Another good one Stephen thanks for sharing. Really interesting seeing your training breakdown of sessions based on lactate. I’m doing a lactate step test and vo2 max for the first time next week, looking forward to seeing what my curve looks like. Any suggestions for first timers? 🙏
Great videos! I was hoping you could comment on something, what is your view on heart rate vs performance. Using a run index like what the polar watch produces predicts your race times using pace and heart rate data only, its surprisingly accurate. This leads me to believe that heart rate is the key, it seems to be highest predictor of your conditioning level. Do you feel that this is the case? or do you think there is more to it? I've done a number of experiments during training blocks and developed a formula that produces better results...I did none of the traditional sessions like tempo, long runs, etc... and no high weekly mileage....The focus is strictly on producing the fastest pace at the lowest heart rate. Its a closed loop training system, meaning that your heart rate data is fed back to control the duration and intensity. It makes training very simple and tailors every session based on how your body is reacting..no guess work. I thought doing all the various types of runs where needed to be well rounded, but beginning to think that's not the case.
I wanted to find the right video to ask this questions & believe this is the right one. I have been and will be training all summer to hopefully run my first Sub 4hr Marathon October 1st. I have constructed a plan based on a lot of what is said on your videos, ie... speedwork, intervals, hills lots of easy days and a long run with some gym/strength training in there. My question is this. I also have a marathon on Labor Day, Sept 4th; are these to close together to achieve my Sub 4hr goal 3.5 weeks later? I will not be running the Labor Day Marathon hard, but hard enough I'm sure in the heat of September. Thank You all for any thoughts and feedback you may have.
How do you decide what races you actually want to do? I feel like I’m a bit all over the place in terms of what I actually want to train for, or whether I want to race at all. I sort of just want to run but I find it hard without purpose or a set goal in mind.
Im basically a complete beginner. I had asked around for what training to do and i got the couch to 5k recommended. When I finish this though what do I do in terms of planning my nex plan? How do I increase the mileage after finishing the couch to 5k like practically? Would i do bade training or idk?
2 months atleast and then add in strides (6 to 8 strides about 75meters) twice a week and also hill sprints ( 6 to 8 reps at 10secs )for the 2nd month . So pick 2 days out of your week to add that after your steady or easy runs or even during it
Love how much you're teaching me! Thank you for allowing us amateurs to learn from a professional like you! Keep up the great videos!!👍👍

Love the video, and loved seeing strawberry hill again. It's been a long time since I lived in teddington.
Such an awesome video. I have been wanting to change over to a 14 training cycle to get more strength training in and better recovery.

All that time waiting to ask that question and he straight up ignored ya
This is all very good and everything but… where’s that jacket from?!

What is this ? What is lactate zone? Can you do one for semi beginners that run about 50km a week

thx!
Nice video. What's with the funeral music though 😂
How long do you suggest base building prior to adding in these more intense sessions? Or do you even think base building is necessary?
