CORRECTION AT 3:17 - you would need the AMD GPU to be at least GCN 2.0, which is truly a mixed bag. Check Techpowerup to be sure, as it is not as straightforward, for example, the R7 260X is 12_0 while the R9 280 is 11_1. This occurs throughout the 200 and 300 series AMD cards, but by the RX 400 series cards 12_0 becomes more streamlined.

The pandemic made me sort of a GPU hoarder. I want to have at least two back up GPUs and be able to make some cash if the chip shortage comes out again. EVERY GPU I had sold during the pandemic was for twice their value, IF they have at least 2GB of Vram to play something, even Esports stuff.

GTX 960s will set you back upwards of $100 AUD here in Australia! You can find RX 570s for the same price so I’d 100% recommend people pick up a 570 over the 960, if you’re here in Australia! Even 1050s hover alone that $100 price. Used tech prices are always wild over here lmao

It's a similar story here in Canada. Used RX 470/570 and RX 480/580 cost somewhere between $75 and $120, which is still good value considering what a new GPU costs. An RX 6600 is $300 or more and an RTX 4060 is over $400.

Had a chinese refurb of this card for a little over 2 years. Played everything I needed on it, the fact that I coupled it a 17" CRT monitor helped a lot. It was a great experience, especially because it was the last line of cards to support native VGA, so older games also looked the best with that couple, but modern games, as shown here, weren't ever considered unplayable. I passed it on to a friend who built his first PC on a budget, and he's definitely gonna extract a little more use out of it. I actually plan on getting it back, whenever he buys a more modern GPU!

Love your videos, and particularly the videos where you look at older hardware to see how useable it can still be. Interesting to see the 960 mostly being capable of playing modern games. Several years back, the play would've been to slap a 750 ti into an i5 2400 Optiplex on a tight budget; now maybe the play is a 4gb 960 into an i5 4770 Optiplex.

I purchased a really clean Gigabyte GTX 960 Windforce in the original box that is stamped refurbished for $18. I also got a Sapphire Tri X R9 290X same condition in OE box . Both benchmarked decent for their age and can play the older titles, many of which I never have played yet lol. There are still some good older cards for those on a budget and just starting out. I have put together two PC's. One has the Asus GTX 1060 6GB paired with an I7-6700K and the other runs an XFX R9 390 8GB with an I7-4790K. Both produce good playable results for me.

Sounds like your gpu, current one, might have been a mining card, meaning the vbios might be flashed to a mining bios...which you can flash back to original bios using gpu flashing software. Might not need a new card. I had a mining rx 570 8gb....did the same thing. a mining bios will not accept the actual drivers. Worth a look anyway. Finding the original bios might be a pain...took me forever to find it. keep in mind that old cards are more likely to be used in mining.

I'm actually really impressed with how well that held up in the modern games. Probably wouldn't have even considered that low tier of that old of a graphics card these days, but for $20, it actually is pretty insane how well it's held up. The RTX 3000 and 4000 series cards are pretty insanely powerful, so it doesn't surprise me that the 4060 performed comfortably 3-4x better than the 960, but if you have to build something for $100, it actually seems like a compelling offer. Only problem is, I just checked and it seems like in my area, and even what I found on Ebay, people are asking more like $40-50 for these things, which seems a little steep to me. $25-30 seems fair to me given the age, and the limits this card will have, but it's hard to justify spending $50 while other cards are on the market for similar prices.

I think incorporating some more current freebie games into old card benchmarks like this (stuff like Wuthering Waves/Honkai Star Rail) could help more people decide if this has enough juice to play average F2P games, since it's got a bit of a higher baseline requirement than something like League of Legends, but it's still an approachable game and a good target for entry level. You can modify the config database in that to run up to 120fps so if it's getting more than 60fps you'll be able to see it more clearly, and I think you just edit a registry key for HSR to set that to the same.

Nothing wrong with low settings and a little FSR if your working with £20/£30 for a GPU! At the end of the day it’s the difference between playing and not playing games so 👌🏼

  • @BrandonWestfall

There was a large period of time where I was happy if a game just ran. I remember having to heavily edit the ini file for Diablo 3 just to run the game. There were a few boss fights I couldn't even complete because the frame rate was so bad.
I currently have a Ryzen 5 7600X and RX 7900 XT. I play at 1440p and aim for 165+ FPS in any game I play. If it means lowering some of the settings to hit that mark I'll do it. With that said I am completely fine playing a game at 1080p 60 fps if I had to.
It boils down to what you can afford and what you're used to. For the majority of their lifetime video games have ran at 30 FPS on consoles and no one really cared.

My 970 sits in a display case because a decade old or not, that is still one impressive looking gpu and people do like to look at it. I adored that card so much I just couldn't drive it to it died. I want to have the last working 970 on the planet eventually, lol.

The problem with older gpus, although cheap and very doable to light to medium modern gaming, within reason of course, the main issue is the power requirements for older hardware rivals current high end hardware, in the long term might be a very large negative, so always try to keep that in mind!

No such prices exist in EU. These are closer to 40€ if you are lucky . Often listed at 60€ . Same with 970. It's actually the rx 570/580 that people are offering in abundance and that makes their 2nd hand prices pretty competitive. It's better to go for these at 50-70€ than wait an eternity for a properly listed but way older 960/970 .

I then upgraded to a better i5 3470 PC which was a grad gift from my parents and bought a GT 1030 after which allowed me to play more titles. Then, I was able to save a bit more to buy the GTX1060 (used) as well as upgraded my CPU to a i7 3770 (used) which served me for a much longer time until last year which I then got a 3060 with a new Ryzen build but for in just a few months traded that up for a 3070 and then saved a little bit more to recently getting the 4070ti Super... It is one hell of a journey when it comes to GPU and PCs in general but I really appreciate the older ones, and even the entry level ones bec those allowed me to experience and appreciate gaming...
