I do the same rig, if it is a snaggy area I don't clip the sinker direct to the snap, I tie a small amount of mono half the strength of my main line, if it gets snagged most of the time I get my rig back minus just the sinker

I know that rig as the West coast rig ,I have a 2nd hook same size as a sliding hook. 2 hooks in the same bait doubles your chance of a hook up but does also catch 2 fish same time. Lot of fun when they're 5 lb each. Another add on is a Imp shield on main line & take your trace trace down to a clip on your sinker .Keeps all the weight together & gives you more distance .

In Virginia and North Carolina (and maybe other places) we call this a "Fish Finder Rig". I'd suggest trying braid friendly sinker slides even if you use (as you should) mono shock leader. Especially on a spinning set-up the mono can save some fingers when throwing heavier sinkers.

Dude, sorry about the knee! Please stay off it (and the beach) as long as it takes to heal fully. I'd rather watch your old videos than have you wreck your knee by getting on it too early!
Thanks for this tutorial. I've yet to make my first cast with my $20 Craigslist surf rod and reel, but I'm studying up on your channel so I'll be ready for that day! :)

I have use this rig for surf fishing on the treasure coast of Florida for 8 years using 16lb test which will handle any fish I catch like Jacks up to 25lbs and more .
For sharks mostly Blacktips I use 30lb mono with 80lb mono leader which handle sharks so far up to about 120lbs. I have seen 15lb Jacks landed on a small Sabiki rig, I got away from braid and heavy line since I enjoy just the battle.Nice video, get well soon

  • @larrysowada9905

It's called a fish finder rig. But your leader is to long if your going for distance because once you throw it it starts a helicopter affect because the air catches it and the bait and slows it down, it might be good for a short cast. If you want to have that long leader there's a rig called the pully rig, I make it and use it when I want to throw longer distances there's no drag or helicoptering. Larry

    • @HeySkipper

+Larry Sowada you are right Larry, it was way too long. Good eye!

    • @Haneix1
      @Haneix1 6 лет назад

There are easy methods of stopping this, the clip to your shockleader can be used to put the hook on or if thats to short double down back to an impact lead, then when you cast it will stay streamlined but come apart in the water.

Some fish finder terminals are designed to not wear with braid line. The normal white ones are soft, and will be chewed up, with the braid friction.

  • @dezil72
    @dezil72 7 лет назад

Depending on what type of weight you use you can place a bobby pin or paperclip through it so that if you hit a snag it will pull out and only leave the sinker behind and dangle the line and other tackle. Using this rig is awesome but if there are oyster beds or rocks or other rif-raff it can be a big pain in the ass.

Great rig for bait (bunker, clams, etc.). Only thing you want to watch out for is the fish finder. Make sure that you get the ones that are rated for braid. That cheap plastic one will burn through braid pretty quickly.

Ocean Beach pier or imperial Beach pier and shelter island pier are good in San Diego. Good for macrell or bass. And plenty of shovel nose guitar fish and rays. Halibut from most shores or jetties. If you find any good surf fishing make sure you post it because I would love to fish them too. Love your videos and sorry about your knee man.

Very informative and humorous, laughing is good. Multiply your knee problem by two, that's what I live with 24/7/365. For some reason the inner half of the cartilage in the knees decided to go missing and causes bone on bone contact when I walk. Injections haven't done much good so I reckon I'll just have to slim down and get them replaced. Dating for three years?, come on guys take the leap, the waters fine, this Nov it will be 49 yrs. for me and da mama.

Here's some friendly fyi. That knot you're using to attach your hook is called a "Snell knot"
Whenever I tie that knot I like to use a hook that has a bent over eyelet. It keeps the shank of the hook inline with your leader line.
BTW welcome to the Jacked up knee club. I tore two ligaments and chewed up 70% of the cartilage in my left knee 36 years ago.

Hey Senko Skipper!! I live around Los Angeles, and I use your guys' surf fishing tips when I go out over here! I know you are allowed to surf fish at Huntington or Bolsa Chica Beach to surf fish. Huntington Beach also has a very long pier that you can catch a very wide variety of species! You could also probably get a boat out to Catalina island for pretty darn cheap right now around 40$! It's a 3/4 day trip where you can catch from rockfish to yellow tail which are our game fish! If you have any questions or tips for fishing on the coast hmu!!! Hopefully this helps!

Hi I had written a pretty long response but lost it by accident, but I'll type it again.
Wife and I often go to Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, CA. They mostly have Pacific Mackerel there during the summer months if you fish mid-pier to the end. Use a sabiki rig like you have in previous videos and you should hook up fish in no time.
San Clemente pier also has quite a variety of fish as well, from guitar fish, bat/round rays, mackerels, sardines, surf perch, walleye perch, etc.
Lately we have mostly been going to Balboa Pier because it has better parking, more action, and better food. There's a Ruby's Diner at the end of the pier in case you get hungry and other shops around the pier too. San Clemente's selection is rather limited, and sadly I can't recommend any of them.
Let me know if you decide to go to either of them; I'm looking forward to seeing them in upcoming videos, or maybe we might see you there!

Awesome!! I've been pier fishing in LA since I was a kid and I still go out once in a while. I'd recommend the following piers: Hermosa, Venice, and Redondo. Common baits used: squid, sardines, mussels. Best bait, in my opinion, is mackerel and shrimp. I've met people fishing the shallows at the pier using chicken hearts for bait and they were catching. Best times to fish are sunrise and sunset. You guys are awesome, you'll love LA and SD for sure.

This rig contradicts the episode on tying a shock leader as there is no swivel. I tie the same rig. But I was thinking about that bead chaffing the knot. I just knot on a cut rubber band instead of a bead or even two rubber band knots. Let that lead slam into rubber instead of hard plastic that does not always slide over the knot. I've never had problems with beads, so I guess they work. But rubber bands are cheaper and have a lot more uses (making weedless hooks, lashing rods together, free line fishing, etc.
This one will be hard to describe, but I will try. I fish with an open bail. Best on a flat dock. One without a railing. Cast this rig. Leave the bail open and lay the rod flat on the dock. Fill a pop can with a little water. Pull the line out between the reel and first guide to the left or right a few feet and place the loop over the pull tab of the can. When the fish runs, it pulls over the pop can and it is on an open bail. Close the bail and cross his eyes.
Now you can fish in complete darkness as you will hear the can go over.
Another rubber band trick. Cut your rubber band and wrap it around the cork right above where the line comes off the reel. Open the bail. Tuck a loop of line under one wrap of rubber band. The fish runs and out goes the line on an open bail. The rubber band gives enough resistance so wind and waves do not pull you line out.
For headlamps, I use the one for car detailing. Why? Because it is on and off. No cycling through high, low, green and red to get to off.

Hi Brendon. I'm big fan of your videos. I just started beach or surf fishing now that I got stationed in Georgia. I have little experience with saltwater fishing and I have so many questions. I was wondering if you could make video about how to properly surf fish with circle hooks, how to properly put bait on a circle hook, what type of fishing rigs are best for surf fishing, and what hook sizes would you recommend based on the type of fish you are targeting. Again, big fan. Any guidance or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Great video and consider taking this unfortunate opportunity to do videos that you couldn't in the past. And when you do come down to San Diego please contact and come out and with some local anglers. I know someone of us (like me) have an extra kayak or boat for to do you some nice SoCal ocean fishing.

when you use this rig, does the bait float or settle on the bottom?

I suppose you got an answer elsewhere, but in case this rig have nothing to make the bait float so it depends. The heavier the lure, the less the floating

Hey, love the video. Quick question. I am going to CA for my Granddaughters open heart surgery at Stanford University. I have never fished in the Pacific and I plan on crossing that off my bucket list at some point during this trip. And rules I should know or are there any tips?

Sliding sinker clip is called a fish finder. Knot to the hook is called a snell
