A (Not So!) Perfect Day on the Water | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 105

- Опубликовано: 26 мар 2022
- With a forecast of light winds and sunny skies, our first sail with Renata started off perfectly. Wellll, just give it 20 minutes…
…and Kirk’s climbing the mast, Lauren’s minding the crying baby, the wind is gone and it looks like Soulianis won’t ever make it to her destination. 😂 This first sail with our new crew member is about to teach us a few nuggets of wisdom.
Hope you enjoy!
Much love,
Lauren, Kirk & Renata

I took a break from watching Soulianis, and now I'm binging again, and I have to say.... the music was always good, but now you're taking it to the next level!! Also, congratulations to the little family! ❤
May. God. Keep. Pertecting. Ya. On. The. Trips. Stay. Safe.
Renatta is a natural, wants to be part of the program for sure.
She does. Already quite the character!
You guy's are doing great and you'll soon get into a routine with the baby. You've got it. Love the vlog.
You guys are doing fine as a parent👍🥰
That last shot of the boat in the sunset was absolutely the best.
It'll be so fun for Renata to see all these videos once grown. Are you teaching her to swim? See "How to teach your baby to swim".
Its so wonderfully.. amazing.. and touching to see these small persons exploring the world😍…….. big eyes looking/ stairing/focusing on something that caught their attention,.. they streach out their hands touching.. sometimes tasting :) … and then these big, beautifully eyes turns up to you, just looking, and you are just sitting there wondering ”what is she thinking right now?? what is going on in that little mind??”….. And the she smiles! ❤️ Its just like a miracle.. I almost got a littlle ”weet”in my eyes watching this little charming Renata sailing the seas😁…. and knowing that this little girl are in the hands of two loving parents. Thank you for inviting me/us onbord.🤩
By the way… why are you anglo-american sailors (so that you now- I’m swedish) so stubbernly obsessed with going up to the mast to raise/lower/reef your sails? 😉😁 And at the same time commenting that in some conditions it can be a bit dangerous to go up to the mast 🤔
Well, this is in all humility a description of how I do it….
1. All the lines to the cockpit
2. Lazyjacks attatched to the spreaders, forming a wide ”v”, so that the main is lead down to the boom without getting entangled in the lazyjacks
3. A line/downhaul attached the top of the mainsail and hank-on the headsail/ jib
4. A singel-line reefing system
Personally, I feel very safe with this setup, and I feel that I can control fastshifting conditions.
And here comes an other ”by the way”….. when I have a crew onbord, and we have a small safety-talk before leaving harbour I’m very clear with the priories…… BOAT FIRST😠…..think, you are at the risk at scratching the side on a quay or something… I always stresses the importans of acting quickly….. Put down the foot or something! For what is a foot compared to a big SCRATCH on the boat?🧐 So, boat first!
Captain R and crew… take care , and stay safe!
Greatings from Sweden
(where spring/boattime is on its way😎)
You're not lacking for advice, I can see. Here's mine: #1 boat priority - reliable autopilot. No question, everything else depends on it. Love your channel. Thanks so much for the effort you put into it.
Lauren I can now say that baby looks just like you and she is absolutely beautiful! Great job to you both.
Love the slow pace, what sailings all about!
Good shot of the sunset
It was an incredible sunset too
Save the boat you save everything, when you get a chance, set the boat up for single sailing. Don’t worry about us,will still be here. Thanks for sharing
I have never seen a baby with their hands always out in front of them wanting to be part of the program. She's a natural and with chill parents, I'll see her on her own channel in 16-20 years. Great episode!
Loved it..That sunset at the end… Just wow.!!!
You guys are doing awesome! Your baby is so darn cute!!
Your videos make me smile so much - especially this one! Renata in her sun hat is EVERYTHING!
Thank you. 🤗🥰
You three are doing great……….Renata is in charge of the speed of life right now, nothing wrong with that - enjoy the present moment.
Awesome video guys! I'm about to haul out in the same boat yard. (Again..🤔😂) glad you guys made it out of Charlotte harbor!
So glad to see another video. Can’t wait til you catch up in real time. Or closer anyways. Haha your baby is the cutest
"Old" storylines were always interesting/entertaining. "Now" stories are quite different, and still entertaining. Welcome back to YT!
Love you guys and your channel. Remember it’s not about the destination it’s the journey that’s important. If it takes longer with a child simply embrace and enjoy the extra time.
And the adventure continues. Children change life, mostly for the better. :)
So Happy for another episode..
Watching from Canada...Enjoy..
how great it will be someday for Renata to look at these videos and see what a lucky girl she was and how much fun you all had. Building these great family memories is what's life is all about. Enjoy each day because they pass so fast.
They will be an excellent time capsule for her.
Always keep in mind that you are just as prepared and knowledgeable as every first time parent before you and that we have all figured it out just as you will….
That’s excellent advice thank you Howard!
Such a great video! Thanks for sharing
You guys are great parents. That baby is so cute
Hey ho! Glad you dropped by. Seems like you 3 are having a good time. Thanks for posting and hoping y'all are fine wherever you are currently laying your heads at night. Stay safe healthy. :-)
Delightful as usual, you three.
Lovely video. Thank you for sharing. First time viewing. 💕
Way to go, Renata! You are absolutely adorable! Lovely episode.
PS. Perhaps keep Renata's ears covered, during windy stay outs? Otitis is a real danger.
You'll find your stride re:baby, boat, filming. Loved this episode.
And at 2:04 I knew where you three were! LOL My boat's in St Pete and I recognize the Coastie's voice (and almost too fast-paced call) (CoastGuardSectorStPetersburgFlorida Coatguarsecstpetfldah... LOL) Beautiful day - thanks for taking us along!
I look forward to watching your family grow. along with the boat. I know the feeling as my children got to grow up in a family that loves boating etc.
Remember no matter what you are doing the kids just want to spend time with you.
Beautiful!!
Taking it nice and steady, you three all are going to be just fine.Lots of smiles on my face watching you again.
Best wishes always 🙂
Beautiful early evening video!
Thank you
Found your channel 2 weeks ago and binge watched all the episodes :) made me want to get a sailboat and go on adventures, but my wife said absolutely not lol. So weekend camping it is with my cuddy cabin boat on Lake Superior it is still.
Your daughter is going to be able to swim, before she can walk lol. Glad to see you are back on the water.
Yay PS love you all
Hey guys, you need to teach Renata to film while you two do your thing! The down side of that is we would loose video of the little sweetheart!
You both are truly amazing and blessed! Cherish each and every hectic moment, your first mate will assist you soon enough….
Hi Guys, So happy to see you back onboard with the baby. The pictures from you at the beach made me think of the Kennedy's. Not sure why, but I think it's still a good thing! You both look wonderful and the baby is so beautiful. You are so LUCKY!!!!
Great video
Sweet!
Small steps lead to bigger steps. My wife and I had 4 children under the age of 5 (all grown now) we took them all on the boat from new born. To start we would just motor or sail, down the estuary where we were moored, about 5 miles to a nice beach and spend the day there, we gradually increased the journeys so by the time the youngest was about a year old we would sail about 15 miles to a lovely island for the weekend. We would go out every weekend, weather permitting. By the time the youngest was about 5 we would be away for 5-6 weeks at a time. I have to say it was extremely difficult at times with 4 very young children, but it was totally worth it. All our kids have grown into respectful young adults with a love for the ocean and sailing and each and every one of them have said they had the best upbringing a child could ever have. They all still sail regularly. So what I'm saying is, although it may be hard at times, never give up, it is absolutely worth it.
Good conversation to have. If baby falls overboard, who jumps in? As you said, you don't want both jumping in!
Like this. She's so adorable !
Wow, that beach looks a lot nicer than the beaches in O-side!
Don't give the life. That kids going to be a pro by 5.
Hydrovane is our extra crew member, never sleeping, never draining the batteries.never complaining, never eating and never speaking.
Charlotte Harbour great place to start. Island bound? Cayo Costa nice 👍
good stuff
You guys had talked about getting a Catamaran but I think I just saw what you really want lol. A Beneteau Oceanis 62 Sailing Yacht.
Thanks
Renatta’s 1st sail! 1st beach day! Looking forward to all the firsts! You two are doing amazing! We’ve seen footage of when things get spicy and dicey, the montage at the end of your family was PERFECT footage! When Renatta was in baby Bjorn and Kirk was showing her lines and zippers is adorable! A GoPro on Renatta?!?!?! ♥️✌🏼⛵️
My word what can one say. It's neat it's awesome it's just great to see you folks back on the water and this wee sack ,bundle, pumpkin is the best . Not say you two aren't , just your doing it right up having her with you .
Enjoy the hell out of it .
Angus
No worries. It's still fun, and we're still watching. Been watching since Oceanside. (I have history in Oceanside.)
Renata is just beautiful! Enjoy you guys! One day at a time. Before you know it she will be a line handler! She seems interested! 😜⛵️☀️👍🏻👍🏻
I was just thinking about y'all this morning whilst planning for taking my 2 boys under two out for their first sail. Cheers from Southwest Michigan!
Always enjoy your channel! Looking forward to seeing more! Bill from Oconomowoc
That shot at 16:08, golden hour indeed! Fun episode, funny how a seemingly quiet day can be turned upside down by such a little human, no?
( my hand in the air 🙋)
Oh...oh...pick me!! I will be a crew member. I'll sleep in the dinghy and not make a sound. Also not afraid of heights either. 😁
You guys should check out Ran Sailing. They have been sailing with little Vera for quite a while. They circumnavigate Sweden the sailed to the carribean,
Baby. Is. A. Pretty. Baby. Ya. Have. Alot. To. Be. Proud. Just. Remember. God. For. Yas. Blessings.
When you attach your halyard and close the shackle, take some electrical tape and do a couple of wraps around the shackle to help keep it closed.
I often tell my younger friends, if you are not profoundly changed by your children, you're doing it wrong. You're doing it right.
I know you were discouraged when you filmed this, however there are times even on land when you just can’t settle a wee one. Tomorrow is another day, and hopefully it was a better one.
I've noticed the trend with sailing families and babies they all use the jolly jumper and that kind of activity helps them build muscle so that they can be on the water easier works on core muscles and balance and they can entertain themselves I'm not 100% but it might give you a little bit of wiggle room to accomplish other things
Engagement +1. Cheers.
put your go pro in a mount on your chest or on your forehead. That's what those mounts are for, to free up your hands. You can always edit a day's worth of that type of filming with filming you do before you sail and at day's end.
Very poignant episode, I thought! Nice👍
Dad man's the boat, mom watches the baby, tape the GoPro to the baby. You're welcome!
You guys should also look up RAN Sailing and their cockpit seat that Johan made up. It's the absolute best idea. You'll have to go back in their videos a year or so. They were going through the locks in France I think at the time, so a year or two ago. Brilliant idea and should be used by all yachties with kids.
If Kirk (6'3") were standing at waters edge on a beach, he could see the horizon at 3.47 miles. Sitting on a boat on the water, maybe 3 miles.
👍👍👍👍👍
hi Kirk & Lauren safe trip ! may I ask what outboard you are using and do you use epropulsion ? what do you think of the it~
We do use epropulsion, and are actually working on a episode reviewing the motor right now! Stay tuned ;)
Fun vid, I've been following a while. Is that an ATN mast climber you're using?
😊
Another great episode!
Are you two still trying to sell the boat?
3rd crew member autopilot
Who is left to film? Bob, of course!
Too bad your vids are so far behind. I live just a few miles from where you were when you headed for CayaCosta and would have been happy to run you around town and help with errands. I'm retired so my time is pretty much always free.
You are such aa cute family! hi from west allis wi. wish i was there too
👋 🧀 🧠 😁
12:20 extra GoPro mounts on various set places on the boat?
Teach the baby to film. 🙂
i wonder, why you guys dont put the safety net around those rails?, one unexpected jump and renata can be easy on the edge.
Nice video, I think you mean you are missing a split pin ?
What is the brand/model of the ascenders that you used on the halyard to climb the mast?
Another great video! Are you and Sam Holmes long lost brothers?
At first I was like: Seventeen minutes? WTHeck? but now I get it: BABY! Also, how old is she REALLY? (I can't pay for more content as we are saving for our own adventures). But seriously- how old is she in real time?
Loop recording. Chuck a camera on your head and if anything happens hit the loop.
Good idea
Always a question of compromises.
You said it!
Maybe you should take on a new crew member! Just set up some cameras and do voice overs too, but you guys are doing great and you’ll figure it all out....
Baby proofing a boat can it be done! Asked by every maritime couple starting out! The answer is--?
Are you in the Bahamas at this time?
:-)
All I can say she a has two wonderful people in her life enjoy every minute time goes so fast try to slow it down
