    HAIIIII. OKAY so about the fees thing, again .. the price varies. I saw someone say "omg $2000" but I couldn't find the comment. When the dues are higher, there are usually more things included (e.g. if there is a conference coming up, your registration, hotel, and travel are usually paid for .. maybe even a meal or two, etc.) so it's deeper than the surface shows. People with lesser fees will likely have to come out of pocket and ultimately end up paying the difference. So yeah it sounds intimidating but different orgs & chapters operate differently. Hope this helps to clear up some of that confusion.

    People see these orgs as just being social, but forget the very important fact that they’re also businesses. Most of what you said falls in line with things you wouldn’t ask a person who works for a company you would like to join.

    I'm truly not trying to be the devils advocate but, most of these young people haven't been around a Black Greek Culture and most are very intimidated by a claimant that's unfamiliar to them.
    I went to law school in Texas and I would get approached by many of the undergrad students asking about my organization. As a result, many of the undergrad students were scared to approach undergrad members on the yard but, will approach me because I'm older.
    Let's remember the yard is are community and you will have immaturity Intrest because their young just like we once were.

    -Always ask the dues and initiation fees. Yeah, everyone is different, but you are asking the people for the chapter that you want to join so you need to know their answer.
    - Its ok to ask what is expected of you. Of course they wont tell you all the details because some things are secret, but you cant expect people to want to join but you dont tell them ANYTHING.
    -Someone asking how to be recruited sounds like they are asking how to join. I think that is a reasonable question.
    I agree with your other NO questions tho. Those are kinda socially awkward lol.

    • @SheaMiller

  • @jazb4715
    @jazb4715 5 лет назад +1

    Please Help! I asked an org about missing an informational on IG and if there would be a similar even!! I thought interest meetings and information also were different.. What do I do? Will I be blackballed? Should I talk to them about it? I have no Greek friends or family so it was an honest mistake.

    • @SheaMiller
      @SheaMiller  5 лет назад +2

      You posted that in the comments? Some stuff really is up to the chapters .. because I honestly can’t tell you what they’re thinking but they definitely won’t (or shouldn’t) respond to that question exactly.
      You’ll really have to just wait until the next go round because I’d you missed the “rush” meeting there’s no going around it. Informational and interest meetings are different but what you are explaining sounds like the interest meeting for rush. You could ask questions but, what they can honestly tell you may be limited.

    I sent a message on instagram to one chapter letting them know that I got accepted to the spring semester for the school and I would be coming in as a junior. I asked them if I still had a chance to get in. Is that a bad question? I also told them that I didn't grow up in America or knowing sororities meaning I needed a bit more information from them. Is that bad?

    • @SheaMiller
      @SheaMiller  5 лет назад +2

      I wouldn't say "bad" but that's one of the questions that you may not really get an answer to .. because they won't tell you that you can't pursue membership simply because you're a junior and at the same time, they can't give you a real answer of whether you have a chance to get in until the process begins (there are GPA requirements, community service requirements, recommendation letter requirements, etc.) so it's deeper than just what's on the surface. There are members in organizations from all over the world but, the best place to start understanding the meaning of sororities is just by doing your research (as you have began by watching this video and hopefully others like it) .. so continue to do your part and I'm sure they'll be able to help guide you when the time is right.

    What made you pick aka

    • @SheaMiller
      @SheaMiller  6 лет назад +29

      Locally, at my school the AKAs were everywhere. They had a lot of events, scholarship opportunities, and overall they just seemed like cool people I would enjoy being around. I don’t come from a family of Greeks (I had 1 cousin that’s an AKA and 1 that’s a Zeta that I knew of at that time) so I really just had to do my research.
      After doing my research I had a lot of reasons why I chose this org over others .. but what really stood out to me most nationally was when I was entering, one of the targets under the International President was called “Emerging Young Leaders.” It focused on reaching in to middle schools & talking to young girls & just being a mentor for them in general, which tied back to the purpose of the org. At that point I was REALLY interested in juvenile justice/helping do away with negative stigmas for the youth (my undergrad major was criminal justice) .. so I was like YES! This is the one lol.
      Thankfully after I joined I had the opportunity to plan a few of the EYL events. We did simple things like talk about our majors, mock voting, and we even just went to have a spa day where we painted their nails and stuff. It was awesome! I was so sad when the target changed from that lol but then it switched to high schoolers which was cool too.

    The most confusing vid..... Why on Earth would people not ask these questions? Popular culture has presented orgs in a way that allow for these stereotypes to exist. Even if these stereotypes aren’t true some people may ask them. Shouldn’t members have more compassion for people’s ignorance? It’s not like Greek orgs are free flowing with information about the org ins and outs of the org. Therefore, people will be inclined to ask questions. Respond to “annoying” questions with grace.

    • @SheaMiller
      @SheaMiller  5 лет назад +3

      Because people may not ANSWER them. Alternatives were suggested that were “easier” .. just like you don’t ask people how much they make, it’s rude, right? People who choose not to answer don’t have compassion. Same thing. People can ask whatever they want but people also aren’t obligated to answer anything.

    • @asia8702
      @asia8702 5 лет назад +9

      @@SheaMiller I think that it is time that we do better. Asking someone what they make is not the same as asking how much they paid for an organization membership (most are public information). It's like the difference between asking how much someone's tuition is versus how much a book at that school is. The general understanding is the book is a standard cost. In life, we are going to be asked questions a million times in relation to what we do. I spend so much time answering the same questions about employment law, travel, taxes and other things I do a lot. Sisterhood and humanity period is about helping others, and especially when we hold certain positions. You are right, no one is obligated to do anything but is it the right thing to do? Someone who is not in our area of specialty is not going to know any of these things you are suggesting. I think it is very helpful to put this out. This is awesome, but for the other, 99 million people who don't see this, be humble, remember you too may ask questions that make others cringe in their field. Respectful questions deserve respectful answers. Even if you offer this same information in public when asked. Be blessed and many blessings with finishing school :)

    • @SheaMiller

      Or .. because it varies, as mentioned. I’ve worked in higher ed & just from general conversations, I learned that some orgs have relatively low costs (around $100+) and others have a substantially higher cost. So it would be misleading for me to say “they’re all high” knowing that’s incorrect.
