  • HOW TO HOOK UP A EQUALISER TO A AMPLIFIER WITH PRE-AMP CONNECTORS AND HOW TO USE TAPE MONITOR WITH EQUALISER. WITH A 3 HEAD CASSETTE DECK ? ....THERE ARE BIG MEGA CHANELS THAT I HAVE WATCHED TRYING TO ANWER THIS QUESTION BY A SUSCRIBER , BY AVOINDING IT THE QWESTION , WITH 45 MINUTES OF ONCOHERENT DIAGALOGUE , COMING TO A CONCLUSION , THAT ULESS THE TAPE MONITOR IS ON YOUR AMP , IT CANT BE DONE, SO , WITHOUT ANSWERING THE QWESTION. SO I HAD TO FIND OUT FOR MYSELF ,ON MY OWN "skin" or AMP , BUT FIRST I HAD TO GET ONE ..... ENJOY !

Hello brother. Can you help me connect an older Bose Active EQ to a newer audiolab amp. The amp has no tape function in but has a pre in/ out and power . Would this work?

Hi , that should work as intended if you connect the eq to the pre amp conectors , just like in this video.

If the EQ has a source select button like this one seems to do one has to keep the following in mind for this configuration.
    - If your EQ INPUT SELECT switch is into SOURCE you won't be able to monitor the tape deck. You will be able to EQUALIZE the source and monitor it after being EQed, but not monitor the output from the 3head deck.
    - If your EQ INPUT SELECT switch is into TAPE you will be able to monitor the tape deck, but you won't be able to EQUALIZE the incoming sound to the tape deck, you will record the source exactly as is, and you'll be able to MONITOR the source or the output from the deck's playback head according to deck's MONITOR button.
Ideally you'd want to have an EQ with monitor function, which are quite rare, or have an INPUT selector switch like for example a Technics RP-9030, a SONY SB-500 or the much more common Realistic 42-2115.

? This is a equaliser with monitor function. Before I shot the video , I did test it's functions and connected as described in the video will function as described in the video. One thing agree on , is that it won't be able to equalise a irecording source into the cassette deck. Unless you're doing cassette to CD or full digital conversions, I don't think it matters.

@@vidtech2630 For what I see this SANSUI SE-500 has a very customary EQ INPUT SELECTOR switch and no monitoring function. The monitoring function is provided by your tape deck and its ability to rely the input signal.
The EQ can be either positioned on the SOURCE or TAPE. Thus the LINE OUTPUT is limited to equalized SOURCE or TAPE but when you select TAPE, the REC OUT will be the SOURCE (without EQ as it is already busy equalizing the tape PB OUT, the EQ-REC switch is inactive), hence it CANNOT provide EQ on REC OUT for the tape deck.
      Signal path OUTPUT configurations:
*** Equalizer with EQ INPUT switch ***
INPUT switch on SOURCE: LINE IN EQ LINE OUT
REC OUT switch OFF: LINE IN REC OUT (source)
REC OUT switch ON: LINE OUT REC OUT (source)
INPUT switch on TAPE: PB IN EQ LINE OUT
REC OUT switch OFF: LINE IN REC OUT (source)
REC OUT switch ON: LINE IN REC OUT (can't be switched to LINE OUT as you cannot loop feedback the signal onto the tape deck)
An equalizer with TAPE Monitor function has a PLAYBACK MONITORING switch beyond the INPUT SELECTOR switch. One such example is the legendary Technics SH-8065 or the more popular SH-8045 and SH-8044.
*** Equalizer with TAPE MONITOR and POSITION switch ***
INPUT switch on SOURCE: LINE IN EQ (on/off switch) LINE OUT
EQ switch OFF: LINE IN REC OUT (source)
EQ switch ON: LINE OUT REC OUT (source)
INPUT switch on TAPE MONITOR: LINE IN EQ (on/off switch) REC OUT PB IN LINE OUT
EQ switch OFF: LINE IN REC OUT (source)
EQ switch ON: LINE IN EQ REC OUT (source)

Curiously enough I own the same deck, among many others I admit... but none of my Technics (I also have the B905) have the HX Pro logo which I love. I need my several EQ to equalize the tapes' response and tweak some aging records.

@@m80116 once again connected like this I can tape monitor by using the EQ button & the button on the cassette deck., I don't need to equalise to recordings. I can use the Eq on all auxiliaries like CD or radio etc on playback. So , for now exactly what I was looking for.
