Nocturia = waking to pee, is something that most men just become used to and accept as normal life. Although waking up once per night is normal as you get older, waking up 2-4 times per night to urinate isn't, and this condition can start to negatively impact your life. This video covers the reasons leading to your nocturia and overactive bladder at night and then finishes with 8 steps you can try today to start reducing the number of times you wake up at night. This is going to help you improve your overall health, your bladder health and it will help you to get better better sleep.
In this video I go through fluid diaries, strengthening your pelvic floor muscles, decreasing swelling in your legs and feet, limiting consumption to diuretics and so much more to help you stop the habit of waking multiple times per night.

I’m been waking up to pee since my “20”s and am now 73 and still wake the same way and I’m pretty healthy and extremely active!
Started at about 40 for me, now I'm 60. 5 or 6 times a night, from about as little as 10oz. to as much as over a half gallon. My PCP has prescribed a few different meds, but nothing has worked other then despmopressin which has reduced urination to 3 - 4 times per night on most nights. I'm fine during the day. I've eliminated sweets, but eat three pieces of fruit everyday. No alcohol. No fluids after 4:00, and minimal fluids during the day.
@garypalmer890.
You've only been peeing since your 20s? I've been peeing since I was born!
I take alleve before bedtime 10 years now pee once or none at night. Not sure what the interaction is maybe with my prescribed meds but I was peeing 5 times a night. PSA 2.3 @ 72.
@@maxsmart8954 Thanks, I am going to try this. Do you use immediate release or extended release form, and how many milligrams?
😂😂😂😂😂😂@@redblade8160
I am 73. I come home from the market, sometimes caught short, and run to the toilet. I wake up 3-4 times in the first 3 hours of sleep. Will tell you if/when things better after I follow your advice!
You have a great positive attitude. As a physiotherapist myself its almost like watching myself. Much love brother, I hope your channel grows. Dont lose that attitude.
Your introduction was 3:32 minutes long. You might get more people to watch your entire video if you cut your introductions by half. But once you finally started to get to the point you did a great job. Nothing mean is intended. I for one was saying to myself "get on with it already".
I appreciate the feedback, Craig
I absolutely agree, I'm now on video 3 and they all drag out nonsense at the beginning. 7 steps were helpful but skipped the first part. No sub or like for that reason alone.
I have had BPH for a couple of years and, despite meds, I was up 3-4 times a night. I started taking a shot glass of high-quality olive oil every night and within a few days I was only getting up once a night, if that. Even better, I have regained morning wood consistently.
I’m a woman and this was very helpful.
Thanks Debra :)
Another tiip - try to time your bowel movements so that you are empty before you go to sleep. This fecal matter can impinge and press on the bladder causing it to cramp and contract. Not a total cure but it helps somewhat.
🙄
This seems to be my biggest health problem. I'm 76 and otherwise in good help. Will follow these tims and hope for the best. Thank you!
As an older person I am always waking from a long working life that started about 3:33 a.m. now that I'm retired I cat nap for about 3 to 4 hours taking a walk to check out the property and have a leak behind the woodshed. I feel fine.
Thanks, Doctor one of the best pieces of advice I have seen so far, really appreciate your advice. Thanks
You're welcome. Thank you for the comment
I envy people that can sleep through the night! I stop eating or drinking at the latest @5.30p.m. Its reduced the number of times i get up to pee from 7/8 to 1/2.
Excellent video. I a m a semi-retired physician with nocturia. Your video was superb and contained much relevant information which was unknown to me. I am going to try your tips starting today!
Thanks Samuel, let me know how they work for you!
@@DrEricLeckie Interesting comment DrEric, proves that physicians often do not have a clue about how to remedy nocturia.
If i drink 2 litres of fluid a day i will be up 3 or 4 times at night but if I drink 1.5 litres of fluid a day my trips to the bathroom reduce to 1 if I'm lucky. Monitoring you fluid intake is essential. 😊
Its not how much you drink...it's how your body discard your fluid in your body
Very good advice. Will try to follow. Thank you very much.
Thank you very helpful. I'm moving my dinner back to 6pm as my bathroom lights on every morning and it's on often. Get horrible migraine also had neuro issue so very important I stop this issue. After one horrible migraine ended up in hospital bc suspected seizure. Therefore very important i dont sleep with any lights on. I migraine can bring them on. Ive had 2 even when heavier they are quite dangerous have to be mindful of falls. I noticed yesterday I could actually cope without a dinner. I'm quite thin 5 stone 8 and get bullied glared as I made food as my 5kg gain was lean so got slimmer. People just need to accept me for who I am at this stage. Also seem to be fortunate enough to raise family because of very petite stature so only a bit to gain. All positive. I was only eating for comfort really need to just eat in a different place at a different time. I was eating late to avoid people but they were jealous id remained lean despite weight gain and made me uncomfortable. Then the weight was lost again. Hit lows of 31kgs.
I wake at night not to pee but just wake up every 3 hours I have for years. I figure well I'm awake and might as well pee. My bladder I think is sensitive because I never pee a lot when I do get up. Thanks for the tips I will give them a try. I had Prostate cancer years ago and went through Proton therapy and prostrate PSA's are very low.
Get tested for hidden UTI
To pee or not to pee that is the question. I drink all my caffeine before 3:00 PM and that helps me out.Cool video
Thank you!
Thank you Dr. for the information.
Hibiscus tea contains no caffeine I just learned that inflammation and I love it! Hibiscus tea taste so close to cranberry juice! Healthy and delicious!!

i’m type 2 diabetic. doc said my kidney function is out of whack and to drink more water to stay hydrated, so he reduced my metformin and increased my jardiance to 25mg every morning.
and the only way my blood sugar will stay around 100 is if i just don’t eat at all. so seems like i’m just SOL. i’m usually up at least twice between 11pm-6am
I couldn,t agree more. This is what i ve been expriencing all this time. Thanks alot!

Been having intense problems with it. Chronic feeling that peeing is urgent. Minimum 4 times a night peeing small amounts. Just did an urine cultive today. Wish me luck.
Wishing you luck! Let me know how your test results come back
I have been having difficult nights getting up to pee about four or five times during the night. I need to correct it

Thank you. I have learned quite a bit. We'll try not to drink after 6. Thank you again. ❤️

A big factor for a lot of people could be undiagnosed sleep apnea…I got up 3-4 times a night busting to pee prior to being tested, diagnosed severe sleep apnea and from the first night using a cpap machine I’ve yet to even wake once to pee
Great point Lorenzo. I agree, I think more men struggle with sleep apnea then people realize. Glad to hear getting a CPAP machine has helped you and thanks for the comment
@@DrEricLeckie Yeh mate I had no idea about the link between poor sleep and numerous toilet stops through the night until I started using the cpap after being tested, absolute life saver
Is that our problem. Got my Cpap machine today. Hope i will stop running to the loo every one and half hrs dyr8ng the night
@@moiraduplessis2900 hopefully it helps mate…even when I wake in the morning I’m not busting to go, it’s been unreal
Yeah, I would definitely agree it helped me. However due to age and prostrate issues (which ALL men will get if they live long enough, apparently) I wake up twice in my usual 7 hour sleep with the second being an hour or so before I have to get up. Quite annoying when I can’t get back to sleep. Still, that’s better than the previous four times a night!!
With age, the bladder thickens and becomes less elastic thereby needing more frequent emptying. I seldom have problems returning to sleep. The only way to prevent for me is to be dehydrated Get used to it.
Sometimes nothing can b done. Other times a urinal bkttle next to bes will save trips to bathroom, overnite diapers can save trips to bathroom,et c. Keep a diary. Measure how much fluid u drink and the time. Then measure the urinary output and time. Also check pee color to c if u r hydrated. Pale yellow is best.Try to not b anxious as that can make u p more often. For men get prostate checked and fir woman and men get tested for UTI,s
Get checked for diabetes insipidus. A non diabetic condition that can make u p volumes. Its a hormone.
Thanks for these tips Dr. Eric! I work at night so my sleep time is during the day and opposite more normal people; usually have to get up 4 or more times during my sleep time. I also have the CPAP machine for apnea and have to take medication for High Blood Pressure. My question is: Do you think childhood bedwetting/wearing a diaper till age of 7 would have any bearing on later life problems such as polyuria/nocturia?
Thanks for the comment. Look, this is more of a question for a Urologist however in terms of your pelvic floor involvement, it would be unlikely in most cases for your childhood bed wetting to carry over and cause polyuria. Have you had blood work completed lately and if so, how were your levels?
I do. My work with kids revealed a huge number to be having swings of blood sugar and allergies including holding water. If they stoke their sensitivity with sugar etc they swell and then release water to blood stream in night leading to refilling bladder. Many struggle with wetting bed. Benadryl an help to ID. Do Elimination Diet.
I'm not even 30 and I go once or twice, even once is enough to abrupt my sleep and to feel terrible in the morning. It has been like this for years now I can't even remember the last time I slept 7-8 hours in a row..
Thanks for the comment Sebastian. What’s your caffeine intake look like throughout your day? Also, are you eating any snacks after dinner?
@@DrEricLeckie Hi! thanks for the reply. I don't drink caffeine at all. I don't usually snack either, normally I have my dinner at 7 or 8pm and go to bed between 10 and 11
Thank you for advice I will follow.
You're comments regarding bladder control are of interest, however I'm wondering how that might be impacted by prostate cancer 😢
Stopping the caffeine drinks & no fluids after 3 pm helped me from getting up at 3-4 am to P. Ur video helped confirmed my thoughts on my early a.m. urine issue.
Glad to hear it!
No fluid after 3?

A serious factor is excessive drinking sodas, teas, and liquids during the day. Bicarbonate and caffeine plus sugar is hard on the bladder and kidneys. I am female and I am addicted to the drinks mentioned above. Gotta change my habits.
Great points! Try switching to no sugar tonic water. That helped me (I was hooked on diet coke a while back). You can do this
Great video and tips. Thank you for doing it.
I have been using a c-pap machine for over 25 years. Sleeping better but it has not helped to reduce the number of trips to pee at night. I am waking and peeing at least 3 times a night.
Been trying to reduce liquids after 6 PM at night. Will see if that helps.
Good information for people going to pee two times in the night. I’ll start your advice right away, Thanks and more power!
Love to hear it. Let me know if it helped you
Thanks for the valuable information, will give it a try
Very good!! Thank you I am having these problem..
Huge help!!
I wake up about 2-4 times a night to pee. That's much better than when I was a kid. When I was a kid I wouldn't even bother waking up to pee.
What are you?a comedian,I am laughing so much my sides are hurting. A classic.
I slept like a baby last night..
I wet the bed.
🤣stop!! You'll make me pee myself!

A good tip I forgot about is after your last drink a couple of hours before bed lay on your back and put your legs up the wall and relax for 10 minutes, this helps the rest and digest system in your body and also helps drain the fluid from your legs before you end up in bed and are trying to sleep. It makes you feel amazing as well.
@andrewemery7459.
Not a good idea. If you put your legs up against the wall, then you will pee in your mouth!
@@redblade8160 HAHAHAHAHA!
Thanks , will start and give feedback.

Must try to keep your feet higher than your heart when lying down!

I DON'T HAVE SUGAR, OR SLEEP APNEA BUT DUE TO LOT WATER DRINKING IN DAYTIME, HAVE HIGH BP AND NOCTURIA TWICE. MY SLEEP REDUCED TO 5/6HRS ONLY
Thanks for useful information ❤
You're welcome :)
Yes, I have to for PEE atleast 3 times
getting up from sleep but I have to go what will be the reason ? So only
a 2 times a tea one morning and 1 afternoon which has helped me a lot. So no getting up in middle of
Night.
Very good informative and well presented case. However, I have suffered from nocturia for the past 20 years or more and wake up to ten times, and after consulting many GP's and Urologists, no-one, but no-one has come up with a remedy that works. I have tried everything you recommend including forgoing my ONE small glass of red wine with dinner (is that too much red wine?) I avoid all fluids during the day and have not had a full glass of water for years, yet I never get dehydrated or thirsty because my little petuitory gland keeps ordering more and more urine from the kidneys: "Make more urine! More more more!". Recently, as a last resort I have ordered a condom-like penis sheath with drain hose and night bag, that seems to be the last resort for many men. Next step is suicide because i cannot stand these constant sleepless nights any longer. I am 83 years old and have mobility problems that make getting up and walking to the bathroom increasingly difficult now.
I keep a small bucket aside my bed, so I only need to sit up on the edge of the bed, then lay back to sleep.
Yeah, keeping a bucket nearby has helped me. Better than walking to the toilet.
Thanks so much for this. - too much coffee late in the day, plus sweet juices. - that’s my problem.
Thanks for the comment Katherine. Perhaps start with switching to decaffeinated coffee as a first step in the afternoon?
Tq for this video🤗
After bladder cancer I have had to get up many times like up to 10. Hard to get back to sleep. 🙏
it's nice to meet you and please tell me has your problem and/or problems ever been COMPLETELY solved
Doesn't bother me. I've always woken up during the night to go pee. No sweat. It's what I'm used to. I'm autistic so I'm *extremely* sensitive to pressure in my bladder. If there is anything there, I want to get rid of it. Just wake up, keep my eyes half shut, go pee and back to bed. Straight back to sleep.
Is there a link between autism and sensitivity to pressure in the bladder?
it's nice to meet you and please tell me if you ever COMPLETELY solved your problem and/or problems
it’s terrible for your health whether you have accepted it or not
@@Federerfan22 it's nice to meet you and to my VERY best knowledge there NEVER EVER has or will be a link between autism and the bladder
@@MaanOnnTheMoon it's nice to meet you and if he hasn't already HOPEFULLY he will COMPLETELY solve his problem and/or problems
When I was taking ambien at night I only got up once a night to go to the bathroom. My primary decided that he did not want me taking ambien every single day for the rest of my life and took me off it. Now I urinate 4 to 5 times a night.🤬🤬🤬
Hi Doc, thanks for this video. What about people suffering from proteinuria or albuminuria. Thses conditions makes you pee at night as well.
Thanks for this Doc

1.Does decaf coffee solve the caffeine problem?
2. What if you are actually on a diuretic medication?
Very helpful hints
I pee every 1 to 2 hour at night. I stop drinking water at 7pm but still it always happen. I am 73 and in good health. I go to bed at 9 to 10pm and wake up at 530 am except when I take allergy pill then I am awake at past 8 am, Nonetheless even taking allergy pills, I still have to get up and pee every 1 to 2 hrs .
Drink half or 1/4 cup of beet juice with tumeric before you sleep, you will only wake up in the morning
Are you snacking at all before bed?
I am the same age with the same number of toilet flushes
Have you got or been tested for sleep apnea? I was up 3-4 times a night prior to being tested and confirmed sleep apnea, from the first night with a cpap machine I’ve not woken once to pee
@@YehShano I am going through testing now. I am wondering about the sleep anea now. Thanks.
Maybe you can help?
I wake 2 -4 times nightly needing to pee.
However when I go, there is almost nothing there, but the urgency goes away.
So why do I need to pee when the bladder is not full or even slightly full?
How can I fix this?
Hey Peter, thanks for the comment. It sounds like you’re in need of bladder retraining to get reduce the amount of urges you experience. This can be the result of you attending to every urge over the years. Please go and get a check up and do some blood work with your doctor to ensure you don’t have an infection or anything else going on and then check out my bladder retraining video here. I hope this helps: ruclips.net/video/Z9dR0sA9yn0/видео.html
I have been keeping a pee bottle by my bed for many years. Its a simple solution.
Why not just keep a bed pan like hospitals do. We also kept one in our bedroom when we were children. The next morning my mom would pour it around the vegetable garden. The chemicals in the urine would be like a vitamin to the vegetables, making them grow bigger than usual.
Why not just wear a diaper ?
Disgusting totally disgusting
Thats not the message the point is waking up just to pee not the disposal

Great video. Thanks. I'm subscribing to get more good direction that I can follow.
Thanks Wilbert, welcome!
It is vital, especially as you get older NOT to allow the bladder to fill with fluid and stay for a long period. It kills the kidneys, does more to cause Kidney and Liver damage than almost anything. So regular relief of the bladder content is essential..
