  • think of this as a much kinder uHH conversation than most of my 'i dont like this!' videos MISHJASOA. it's so nice to have so many new artists on youtube, but a lot of the vlogs or videos tend to bleed into each other into one big blob..WHY? why are so many artists young 20 year olds with already established businesses? why do they all have such expensive equipment already? will any of these questions be answered in this video? NO!
i also wanna emphasize (cause i don't think i did in the video) that this is truly not ALL art videos! just a heck of a lot of them. it can be a bit mind numbing to see like 10 'related' videos that just have nearly the exact same video formaT MGOIGHD

I’m actually so glad to see a video regarding young artists and how similar it all feels. Older artists make me feel like I’m actually there for the artist themselves and not just the “aesthetic” of it all. On pintrest I see SOOO many comments under art asking “what style is this?” Or “how can I get this style?” Of course these artists are usually young but the fact it’s sooo many is crazy. Anyways great video! :D

Something i really hate about those 'cozy art videos' is that the thumbnail or the miniature doesn't even show the art of the artist in question; generally is a pic of the artist, sitting in their desk, in a room really iluminated and 'curated'. To me looks like 'style over substance' or something. Like they had more confidence in the aesthetics than in the art they produced. I love your videos and your art, i think you have your own aesthetic, and that's quite refreshing in these times. Greetings from Argentina ❤

i agree with almost everything you said in this video. I've had literal panic attacks about being marketable and likable with my art. Capitalism makes this whole idea of montezing your hobby really attractive and I think it really is about selling you a lifestyle, an aesthetic. Like you can be " soft girl, morning tea, clean desk, organize with me, warm lights, artist who visits the museum with their friends and draws cutesy commissions." And you really hit the nail on the head with the homogeneity of online art. It can drive me crazy sometimes.

im sorry youve had panic attacks!! that should noT be the norm for any artist, i can relate to the fear of figuring out what works and what doesnt. ive posted so many things that im proud of but just doesn't get the reach i'd like, and then someone posts something in the vein of 'cozy artist' and it gets like 50000 likes n then im like FUCK..i shoulda doNE THAT. but its like i would hate everything i made if sO. im an optimist and i truly believe that if artists at the core of it all, stay true to themselves, they will succeed! cause i'd just hate art if i became unrecognizable from the sea of soft girls MFIOSHF but i wish you all the luck!! you can do it, you'll figure it out or something will click. unfortunately that is the cons of being self employed, but not impossible!

“Gathered around the mother cow and suckled” HAHAHAH dead. Yeah idk I reccomend the Artcast- it’s a livestream show of artists in their 30-60’s and it rotates on the hosts channels. I also get frustrated with the same middle of the road bland fake ASMR “I’m so organized and tidy” whilst also trying to be quirky- type of video. I think people genuinely think that’s the only way to get views or that views matter.

SOOO AGREE ABOUT THE ART STYLE THING! I see this happen so often where like, there's groups of people that all have such similar art styles and it drives me CRAZY. I feel like with social media and this thing of "how to draw in my style!" this has started happening a lot more? It's not inherently bad but it just makes it so that a lot of art on social media feels all very samey... Also this idea that "art style" needs to be consistent is so silly, personally I think not only does art style evolve the more you learn, but also being able to adapt your style to the "vibes" of different pieces or projects is also really good! Anyways. I'm just ranting. Great video! I've been thinking about this lately, art spaces online do truly feel like being in the Twilight Zone sometimes lol.

love ur criticism and take on this. ive grown soo bored of studio vlogs/art videos for a while now bc they’re all very similar, which, like you mentioned, is kind of the algorithms fault and pushes artists to make videos similar to one another in order for them to gain some attention and promote their work. the algorithm promoting this video style is also probably why so many youtube artists are afraid to create new content or vids that dont follow the typical art video style and if there are artists making unique content its not getting seen by others. i also feel like there arent a lot of black or brown artist vloggers/creators on here with a big following but also i havent been on the art side of youtube for a while so idk if things have changed now.

Man, I'm an artist in my later 20's and always wanted to do videos but kinda lost a lot of motivation seeing younger artists being able to whip up such professional looking set ups with an established style, I wasn't able to do a lot of stuff such as streaming cause I have bad internet and I can't afford good set ups, this vid made me feel less alone. I still feel hopeless on doing anything but at least I feel less lonely about it.

This is such a good video! and I LOVE the legitimate criticism you have to offer! I myself have gotten into filming videos since 2020-2021 and to this day have ALWAYS used my phone. And I'll admit I kinda got tempted to making my thumbnails nice because I wanted to draw people in lol, however, when they click the video expecting aesthetics, they are met with the entity that is ME with my weird unconventional contrarian art + very vulgar humor LOL I love your insight of this becuase its a literal like, "I WASNT CRAZY" type feeling! Sometimes I will watch an art vlog or 2 and project onto the fantasy of being an illustrator, but the more I use my brain the more I realize how, "planned" a lot of the videos are y'know? it's like a guilty pleasure yet I also feel like I am losing my mind. Something else I can vaguely relate to is that I am not very old, I am currently 20 and will be 21 next year! And I feel like ive always had kind of an "old soul" kinda mindest at least that's what people have told me, but yeah! like I notice a load of stuff with artists around the same as me and younger, that they simply worry too much or feel like they have to have "everything together" not only in art, but life style. I am someone who thinks about age a lot and I am also insecure about my age (in fact! I always have a billion age calcs goin on in my head despite my shit understanding of math) I want to remind other users who are struggling with age is that you will have plenty of time to live life and figure out what you want to do, I have had to learn this myself! depending on yr living situation you're not required to move out immediately at 18! wooo kind of a hugeee ramble there but this is such a uniquely interesting topic to me! I thank you for the insightful commentary! cheers to users n have a happy new year!

YEE thank you for watching my video friend!! :-) oh god the temptation to like, make the aesthetically pleasing thumbnail has gotten us all at one point! and i do feel like i would also be click baiting if i did my thumbnails in that way its likE OOOGGHH YOURE IN FOR A STORM MFISOFHS
and yeah a lot of them are for sure planned, which they have to be! but its like.. augh its just too, fake for me? like everything is too nice too neat too relaxing. and it makes me think...what am i doing wrong? but its not me or you! its just business!
also omg u are so small, you are like a little baby to me U HAV SO MUCH LIFE TO LIVEE ! and so do i! i also think about age a lot mifofhjsoi mainly bc i want to be financially stable and not have to grind at like 60 years oLD. but much luck to you and your artistic endeavour! i hope you also have a great new years! :-)

ur videos make me happy because they ARE different. I feel like ive begun to rlly hate art RUclipsrs bc even when i do find someone who has a different art style, their commentary is so mind numbing. Like they’re just, speaking about nothing. I’ve only watched like 3 of ur videos and ive been much more entertained than most art RUclipsrs i watch which are… dozens.
Personally what i find appealing about a lot of art youtubers is the business side of things since im planning on freelancing once I get out of school. I kinda study art vlogs and stuff bc it gives me a better idea of what it takes to be an independent artist lol. So what you mentioned about the age range of most artist on yt are also interesting, like most of them being 20-early 30 yo’s with pretty successful platforms. It just feels sooo strange to see that they’re moving so fast in their career while so young? I wonder if this is a reasonable expectation for a young artist. But also it’s like, the only reason why they’re successful is best they are following this strict structure that’s easy (not in the sense of producing, but for the viewers) and palatable to so many audiences. It makes me feel like to quickly become a successful artist, you’re forced to limit and cater your art. But like, what if I don’t hit the highest point of my career until im 40? I wish there were more art youtubers who are peaking later in life rather than earlier. Kinda just repeating what you talk about lol

No but for real if I gotta watch one more art vlogger spend the first 5 min of their video preparing coffee. I mean. i DON'T gotta but, it does get very repetitive, and I'm trying to find other ways to make my videos a little more interesting or stand out but I'm kinda hitting a wall too. ALSO also, I'll be 34 next year and I know how that feels, to be constantly not chasing trends because I feel like I'm too gotdamn old and tired for that. its really upsetting that in order for a lot of people to get anything out of their art online is to sterilize and make it so easily digestable with no individuality. Hey Jay, love the video as always. And it’s not only the art videos that look the same unfortunately. If you scroll for just a bit on RUclips shorts you’ll see so many of the same type of videos from foodies, those aesthetic restock videos, fashion, those videos that start out like “I just did something CRAZY”, the people showing off their super techy desks/work spaces etc etc etc. It’s all become very annoying and repetitive, which is why I’m super grateful for your channel. I’ve always loved the way you format each video, especially the tv segments and ofc actually talking about the art you’re making instead of just showing bits of it and having the rest be some aesthetic compilation of your tools and workspace or smth. Not to say I don’t enjoy those videos from time to time but it’s all very oversaturated. Lastly bc this is getting kinda long but I’ve also noticed new artists having an overall aesthetic/filter on their art so their page looks very cohesive and (sorry for overusing this one) “aesthetic” and it just makes me kinda sad bc it seems like they’re more focused on stuff looking the same and “fitting in” instead of like, trying new stuff out and experimenting ☹️☹️

The same room thing! I was legitimately freaking out the other day about that. Two artists with the exact same set up, felt like it was a movie set or something. I was like, is this a real?? Anyways great video, I’ve really felt like so many artists have the same “brand” kind of. (Not trying to be mean ofc, and obv inspo is fine, it’s such a fine line between what I want to express, and then what I perceive as whining about others choices just because I don’t like them. I feel like you really did well with that in this video ). It feel like so much of life, not just art, is starting to pander to a certain aesthetic. I feel like the art community it first, for reasons that you talked about in your video. I’ve seen it expand though, product design, video editing, even architecture to a certain point. I’ve never been a stickler about that stuff before, there’s nothing wrong with aesthetics, but it’s all so hollow. You can tell that it’s not from a place of comfort or peace with oneself anymore, it’s corporate . Art has always been so personal, I used to love finding unique quirks about each artists style- that doesn’t happen to much anymore. I’m pretty new to my art journey so I hope I can work on developing something that feels true to me. Anyways, this comment was really long but this video helped me articulate a lot of my more confusing feelings about art right now! Thanks!

Nah youre right speak your truth 🗣🔊🗣📢🗣🔊🗣📢!! Cozy blogs drive me insane like people will have the same kinda fake soft voice, to aesthetics, from video thumbnails to pouring the coffee to houseplants to a cat interuptting the video. Artstyle too like its either anime kawaii inspired stuff or florally nature. Each them having a storytelling in every video of either being ultra chill and soft to uwu follow ur dreams dont give uuuppp, sanitized social media basic girl stuff. No meaniness but you could put a gun to my head and ask me to differentiate between these artists and I could not tell you what I guess Ill die LOL. Though while its a market they are selling to (and they def might have some online course or planner system to sell), some people are just pretty similar to another irl bit we see them all in one place ahah.
I will say in their defense, Ive seen people comment, in video comment sections or in discord servers dedicated to art, how if a video's visuals arent cute or their isnt a uwu inspirational storytelling or if its not consistent 100% the time, that they wont watch wont like will unfollow. So I can see how artists may be pressured to make a certain type aesthetic.
As far as myself tho Id like to think at least my subject matter of the art is different but. As someone just using a phone and headset, my editing is whatever thing I can do, given im still learning how to take one million years for simple edits lol XD

Yeah, I've noticed how they all look the same. Its common for there to be trends in any community that just looks the same, which is fine, but ya know
    Originality is better

It's so funny to me that you are worried about your art career and how younger artists are being "more successful" because to me you are one of "the big guys", a well known, big artist with a big following lol, maybe it's because I have almost no following but idk it was always curious to me lol
ps: I love ur art sm you inspire me a lot
