    This is all super interesting, especially your point about the female gaze. I think the issue as to why it often feels so sanitized is twofold:
    1. Women have been shamed and criticized for voicing their sexual preferences since the dawn of time. A small personal story first - the other day one of my guy friends was horny on main about an anime girl he liked. I felt secondhand embarassment and told him it was cringe, but he wasn't really able to fathom why if it's just a fictional character and he wasn't being inappropriate to anyone. That made me think about why I felt that way and I had a realization that if I ever did that, I'd feel ashamed, and that I associate expressing horniness publicly with male agression and control. Men really do have the privillege of expressing their sexual preferences and aren't even aware of it, and yet use it to control women. Women have been shamed for being "slutty" or "whores" for enjoying sexual content so much and for so long, that many don't even feel like they have the freedom and safety to explore and express their sexuality. Female gaze is devoid of sex, because it just feels safer to mostly take sexuality out of the equation than to have to deal with men being angry that they might not fit our preferences (and even then they might still get angry that we have dare express ANY desires or ambitions... like bruh, the amount of men who were angry at the goddamn Barbie movie 💀💀💀)
    2. Popular art and entertainment is still predominantly produced by men. This relates back to the first point, because I think that's also one of the contributing factors as to why men might not even be aware of their privillege. If a Transformers movie, targeted mainly for an audience of YOUNG BOYS, is okay with male gazing Megan Fox to the point of sticking a camera down her tits, then young boys will subconsciously learn that it's okay to oogle girls. They think they have the right to, because media made by older men told them they do. Also, it's just incredibly stifling; mens' overexpression of sexual preferences dictates our beauty standards - both male and female imo. Women obviously are considered lesser if they don't fit it, but also men seem to be insecure about it to a certain degree as well. Many think that they should be more muscular to be attractive to women, which is farther from the truth. Women have varied tastes, in particular imo because it's not as dictated by popular media, so I guess there's that. But many men think that we ALL prefer muscular guys, which I think was also a result of men policing other men through popular media and deepening that insecurity.
    tl;dr yadda yadda patriarchy makes men insecure and women afraid, let's just smash it already

    • @bananaboi
      @bananaboi  10 месяцев назад +8

      A VERY TRU ASSESSMENT!! its funny because the artist was like 'men dont feel comfortable expressing themselves a certain way thats why we draw women' and its like BUT U ARE SAYIN THINGS.. THAT ARE NOT HELPING, that may be contributing to this feelING.. it's very interesting to seein real time, like guys try to reason with how they portray women. and yeah a lot of it does boil down to patriarchy, and many more factors that im not smart enough to dissect ye T NUGDGG

    • @ktshlyrss
      @ktshlyrss 3 месяца назад +1

      @alexathegator I feel like you articulated that so well! I completely agree, the lack of blatant sexualization in the descriptions of the " female gaze" can come from the shame put on women for expressing themselves as sexual beings.
      I think I would add another reason sex isn't as much of a priority for the female gaze. The male gaze's form of sexualization sees women not as humans, but as objects for their pleasure. There is entitlement and almost a threatening feel to it. As a woman, it is so exhausting to have to be thinking about how my body could be affecting not only the men around me, but my safety with that. I don't want to put that on another human being, because I've experienced it.
      I don't think that type of sexualizing and possessiveness is the same as the art in this video. Yes it shows men as sexual beings but it also has more. There isn't this demand and danger around it. There isn't the history and emotion of fear that oftentimes comes with the sexualization of women. I know this all is generalization and not all sexy drawings of women are predatory objectification, but like you said about movies, it is always there, and encouraged for men since childhood.
      When I think of what I find attractive in a man, I don't tend to go to sexy objectification first because I don't like it when they do it to me. This video has been really helpful to see that there can be healthy ways to see men/a potential partner as more than just the Darcy hand flex or meeting the bare minimum of decency while interacting (like the creator described). Men and women can be seen as sexual without it being a dangerous and oppressive thing. There doesn't need to be shame around the topic and limiting ourselves from men's and women's perspective only serves to hurt men and women.

    Aaaa I feel so validated bcs I love drawing men and I wish more artists and even media objectify men. It's funny how ever since I got into Marvel and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure in high school that I drew more men than women. The reason I feel off on anime is bcs of the rarity of male fanservice 🙃 One of the few manga that I like that does well in male service is Golden Kamuy and Thigh High Reiwa Hanamaru Academy. Sorry for the long rant but We need more male fanservice in media and pop culture. We need more artists to draw men in erotic and feminine poses.

    You know... As someone who's been drawing forever and ever, this video is like .... WOW, I am not the only one who thinks this way! I knew I wasn't the only one who's been drawing men the way most artists draw women. Like, for real. I just have never shown my art, because I thought it was too much. Most of my men are always in scantily clad outfits and hell one of my first OCs ever [whom I have shown a little of here on RUclips] is actually someone who sometimes dons CAT ears and wears close to nothing for the purpose of ensnaring his enemies, kind of Male Fatale type shit. WOW. I am... I am floored. You're awesome. And your art style is awesome too! Thank you for this video. This makes me feel a little better and gives me incentive to keep going. ^_^ ❤

    God I agree with you SO hard. Me personally, I've always just found drawing men to be like... extremely fun, especially when it's drawing them in fruity little poses or in softer and more beautiful ways. Funny you mention drawing men in women's poses, because (ok apologies for the infodump here) the mangaka for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure does exactly that.
    Araki has gone on record saying that he prefers taking pose inspiration from women's fashion magazine because their poses are more lively and interesting.
    Plus, since the series is full of beautiful men, it's like the ultimate playground for me (somebody who very passionately objectifies and adores men). It's also my biggest fixation to date and I've learned so much about posing and anatomy and art in general through it, and god knows I'm drawing my favourite men in the cutest poses and playing around with gender standards >:))))))
    Banger video btw, love your art! Super underrated. (Edit: HOLY SHIT I may need to watch wrestling... for uh.... reasons)

    I've got so much to say I could say on this topic, but would ramble so long. All I'll say is I agree!
    One thing I will say is that this problem is really tough when it comes to finding pose references. Male figure drawing poses are almost always rugged action poses. Seriously, why can't men be pretty, soft, vulnerable? Or even just regular people doing regular things? Not every man is a goddamn warrior or action hero.

  • @Sarahbeth22
    @Sarahbeth22 10 месяцев назад +18

    This is SO good!! I feel like this explains everything I've been feeling about men and art lately.
    I've always leaned towards drawing "girly" stuff. Like, I love drawing cute clothes and fashion. And I feel so inspired by that stuff! Which is why I've always struggled drawing men. But like, who says I can't draw men that way??
    As someone who's attracted to men, but not necessarily the standard "masculinity" that the media portrays, it's always been really confusing for me. Like, I don't relate at all to the female gaze, but at the same time I read a ton of bl. And from what I've seen, I totally get the wrestling interest! It looks like so much fun!!
    Idk I just think men can be really cute too!! And I love the way you draw them!!! It's really inspired me!!!

    when I saw the title of this video I knew it was going to be good. there is generally a lot of art for people who are attracted to women but very little for people who are attracted to men. even when something tries to appeal to the latter they are usually men who are just hypermasculine...
    some of my art is honestly objectifying men in the 70s and 80s androgynous long-haired men type of way. I feel like I've been deprived of beautiful men in art, so I like to create the art that I wish to see

    People I’ve shared our work with tend to be weird about it. I have trouble finding pose references that are appropriate to body type. But it’s been so worth it to see people like myself and my loved ones on the page.

    i've always been a little confused about my love of feminine clothing when i also typically dress more masculine in my day to day life. It's been a big part of my gender exploration. my interest in wrestling gear fashion started with an outsider appreciation for joshi wrestling gear but i quickly got sucked in by those shawn micheals pants. A lot of wrestling gear really starts to blur those strict gendered fashion staples because they have to be eye-catching and bold. (also wondering when you'll do some fun young bucks art because their my favs atm and their gear is so fun to draw )
