He was born and raised in London. He wasn't saying that he couldn't speak English, he was saying that his teachers treated him as if he were stupid and put him in groups with students who couldn't speak English.
I think secondary schools in the UK would overlap both middle and high school in the US. We go to primary school until about 11 and then go to secondary school.

Akala is truly an inspiration. His mentality and philosophy changed my life and thousands of others like me. I was a bad kid which transpired into me being lost as a young man, mixing in circles and involved in crime which only would have had one ending. I listened to Akala and started listening to his music which lead me to his seminars, books and texts. I learned to understand the route I wanted to take. He changed my mentality towards everything. Without going too deep… 7 years ago I was broke and part of a group involved in all kinds of illegal activities. I now run a healthy business with employees which is only growing everyday and the only person I can thank for that is Akala. Examples of just a fraction of things he thought me;
-knowledge is power. The more you know the more things you can understand and conquer. So read. Study. Take in things which don’t seem important at the time. They will only broaden the mind.
- Ownership is key. Only invest in what you can afford. If you can’t buy it outright, don’t. If you lease something and pay for it monthly it’s because you CANNOT afford it. Instead invest that money into something you can afford. This way It is yours, nobody can take it away. The money within that item you buy outright has not cost you anything. it has become an asset of YOURS. It is invested money. If you where to sell it you would regain the money in which you spent.
- Stop looking up. Too many people look at others. If your looking up at someone else you cannot see what’s directly in front of you. Every person is different. When you stop investing time looking up you have more time to look forwards. Forwards at your own journey and how you can achieve what you want to achieve.
- Money flossed is money lost. Any money spent on showing others your success is only putting your money in the hands of others.
- Net worth is not a measure of somebody’s worth. In our western consumer environment we are brainwashed into judging people’s progress in life on how much disposable income they have to spend on items they don’t need. This only benefits the elite. They need every person to spend their all of their available money. This gives you one choice…work until you die.. 99% of people spend their net worth to show complete strangers what their entire life’s work is worth.
This is just a snip of the way in which Akala changed my entire outlook on life. And if this comment helps just 1 person on their journey I would consider it to be a success.
Life lessons for sure and 7 years is a quick amount of time to figure it out - some never do.
On the ownership point: Wealth creates more wealth - debt creates more debt. Never owe anyone anything except maybe for a house.
Hey Bizz, as an anti capitalist I baulk a little at people starting businesses and profiting off the labour of others, and I say that as an ex business owner who quit in order to line up my values and my actions, but I understand that for many people it’s the only way you can create reasonable material conditions for yourself so I don’t stand in judgement.
All that said, I’d just like to say that I think you posted a really beautiful comment here, really moving stuff, and of course a great testament to the power of words, the power of listening, and the power of putting knowledge into action. Props to you and Akala for understanding these incredibly important truths.

Akala’s fire in the booth part 4 isn’t next level, it’s on its own plain. His daily duppy is also very special in that he just decides to do something very different. I’d say mic righteous warm up session before fire in the booth is the order!

Akala is out on his own. He’s so clever and interesting. He’s an educator in the UK but doesn’t pretend to know what he doesn’t know. He is one of my biggest inspirations as a middle class white guy from England. His book taught me so much 🙌🏼

Akala writes books & is a respected lecturer at Oxford University. Interesting that we learn more about American history than Americans. Americans don't really want to learn history whilst listening to rap they're conditioned to just wanting to hear about bling & waps. Education is power, big bling isn't, as the British writer & politician Edward Buller-Lytton famously said 'The pen is mightier than the sword"!
In Part 4 - after Charlie Sloth speaks Akala raps an excerpt of his writings about the violent history of mans struggles through the centuries - it is a very moving piece, a masterpiece in history telling & rap, a one off that you'll never hear anywhere else.
As he says, in Britain it's more a class issue. Today schools here are hugely multi-racial & everyone mixes together, in London there is very little divide in that respect, school uniforms help to keep all equal & religious aspects are taken into respect within the uniforms.
Factually speaking regarding UK prisons, there are 117 prisons in England and Wales. His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) runs most of these (104) paid for by the tax payer while three private companies operate only 13 so it's not exactly like America to be fair. Our prison sentences are lighter & of course we no longer have the death penalty!
You should watch his debates and talks - he’s the real deal. Write books also. Akala is a true spitter - glad you enjoyed
