I've had frozen shoulder 3 times and found a doctor that does "Manipulation under anesthesia" This is non surgery procedure. This is an ultrasound guided intra-articular hydrodilatation followed by manipulation of the shoulder under conscious sedation. The range of motion releases the adhesions. After the procedure I did PT for only 1 month and it was good as new. I would highly recommend this but you will need to find a doctor that specializes in hydrodilatation of the shoulder. I currently do shoulder stretches and dead hangs 3-4 days a week to keep it from coming back.

I had it first in my left shoulder. Excruciating pain. PT said it was one of the worst she had seen. After almost a year of PT, referred to surgeon for manipulation. Then, about 3 years later, it started in the other shoulder, and started PT at beginning phase. After realizing adhesive capsilits (Frozen shoulder) could be autoimmune, I immediately cut out gluten. The frozen shoulder did not progress, and I was able to stop PT after several weeks! I have remained gluten free since then.

See if there's someone who performs ultrasound guided hydradialation near to you.
If not, an orthopedic specialist, who performs steroid injections, can also make up the "recipe" and give it to you slowly, but needs to be guided.
Also, a TENS unit helps with the pain. It only works while you've got it on, though..
These are the things I wish I'd have known sooner when I had my FS last year.
The "hydradialation" stopped it within three days.
      Wishing you a speedy recovery!

@@circa1890 Thank you kindly for your comment. I’m really happy for you it worked out for you, that’s really fantastic. May I ask what stage you were in when you had the injection?
I have tried a TENS machine to no relief as I am still in the frozen stage unfortunately. I am hesitant to have guided hydradialarion as my physician advised me it’s a 50/50 chance it will work, the pain could also be worse thereafter if not successful for a while as the area is irritated. I’ve been having physio yet stopped as I can do the exercises at home based on instructions here and my physician who turned me to the exercises on this channel prior to the new upload. I am also part of Frozen Shoulder groups and they’ve echoed my physicians advice.
I hope you never experience frozen shoulder ever again!

PT here, learned that you have to wait it out during school. But I had frozen shoulder last April following a very minor nerve traction injury. Went to PT for months without any improvement with my range. My frozen shoulder was atypical in that it was not painful, just limited ROM. Sports Med doc saw me and did fluoroscopic to diagnose frozen shoulder, then suggested injection of primarily saline with some lidocaine with the focus trying to loosen the capsule as much as possible. Prior to the injection my best shoulder abduction was 90, right after the injection I had 120, and within a week I had 150 and within 4 weeks I had full abduction range. Hopefully this will be a good example for other patients in my particular situation. I still have minor discomfort if I lay on that shoulder in a certain way and I don't have my full shoulder external rotation actively (but I do have it passively). My Sports Med doctor said that she learned that at a conference the year before so it might still be pretty unknown method. I was using pulley daily without any improvement.

Thank you for covering this topic. I had frozen shoulder years ago when I was in my mid 40’s. It was extremely painful. Someone asked me what it felt like and I’ll never forget my response because the pain, which mainly came at night was so intense. It felt like someone held a strand of barbed wire over an open fire until it was red hot, then wrapped it around my capsule and pulled it tight. I was absolutely suffering. Unable to sleep, leading to impaired mental function during the day, leading to anxiety and distress over months and having to go on leave for my work as an RN. After PT for months my shoulder mobility was severely impaired still and I opted for surgery over the unknown time frame for the unfreezing process. The surgery was successful. My doctor said mine was severe. My heart goes out to anyone who is, or has gone through this. I’d never even heard of it before I got it.

I have hEDS. I had frozen shoulder late 2018 into 2019 and months later as it got worse and worse. I got it from straining my shoulder pushing a big dog off me in the middle of the night. I eventually saw a shoulder ortho, cortisone shot and months of PT which was helpful. In 2020 I had frozen shoulder again on the other side. Turns out my shoulder was coming out of the socket when I was side sleeping, irritating the tendons. Since I had PT the year before and took notes for home exercises, I got a EMS machine and did the exercises and worked on preventing this becoming another year+ painful journey.

Like me I hear many men have this problem around age 50. I didn't realize it at the time but I felt the problem coming on when I laid back in a recliner or on a bed with my arms above my head and bringing them back down was painful. I also developed a large bump is my upper arm from an over used muscle. But I really want to share an exercize my therapist gave me that gave me 80-90% improvement in 4 weeks without a lot of pain. I would stand sidways to a wall then use my finger to climb up the wall to full extension (180 degrees) because I was incapable of raising my arm more than 90 degrees with out help. I did several reps 3 times a day. So if you don't have Bob and Mike's equipment available immediately you could try that until you get your gear.

I had a frozen shoulder that lasted a year and a half. It came on slowly, over about 3 months. I knew I had injured my shoulder and was icing it and trying to be careful, but then my upper arm became severely clamped to my side and there was no movement at all in any direction. I was in physical therapy for several months, but all they could do was heat pack it, massage and some minor manipulation. I did not have injections of any sort or surgery. It finally started to thaw after 18 months, and since then, I've had more PT, which has really helped. I also use a Bo stick, which was recommended by my pain specialist doctor. It really does help to stay loosened up by using that.

The only relief I get from my shoulder pain is from a cortisone injection.
Physical therapy only worked for me after getting the injection.
And six months later the pain returns!?!

Now I don’t know if I have Bursitis, or a frozen shoulder, or both.
