  • In this video, we will show the hunting equipment we use when stalking deer and wild boar. We walk you through the rifle set-up of our Steel Action HS MX, Trijicon AccuPoint 4-16x50 with a top-mounted Trijicon RMR. Our silencer is a Stalon Victor L and we use Spuhr ISMS SR 3000 as scope mounts. We also discuss which other equipment and hunting clothes we use. Like the Primos trigger sticks.
    Our goal is to provide hunting films with high ethics, good action and some knowledge.

      I'm seeing on Steel Action rifles, that the extraction port is not only open to the side, but also on the top, below your sights. Have you had any problems with extracting the spent casing? I'm thinking of getting a Steel Action HS, but im not sure if the casing will extract properly if you put a sight over the extraction port.

      @@SgtSkybox Hi, On early versions you can have a problem with shells hitting the scope, but only with low mounted riflescopes. The last version has 2 extractors and I am not aware of any problems what so, with the later version. :-)

    Hi Tobias! Great Rifle! You changed the stock now on the old Steel Action or is it a New Steel Action? Really like it!
    Right now i have a 98 in .270 win modified with uncocked Pin. I have a Leupold 4-15x44. I really like your Stock. I would Love to have a Rifle like yours But maybe with the burris eliminator 3 in 4-16x52 with Range Finder. You have a Range finder with you? If you could choose between .308, 8x57is or .300 win mag having like me a .270 what would you choose?

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  5 лет назад +1

      Carlos,
      Thanks for sharing.
      No, I still have my Steel Action HM in caliber 9,3x62, I use that rifle for driven hunts.
      Shall you keep your .270W and add a rifle in another caliber? In that case I would go for the .300WM if you mainly shall use it for stalking, If you would use it mainly for driven hunts, I would have chosen the 8x57.
      If you will replace your .270W, I would choose the .308W, but this is only my own choices, depending on how and where I hunt. It mainly comes down to the hunting you prefer. All the calibers you mention is good calibers. What I consider when choosing a caliber is:
      1. What game will I hunt most with that rifle?
      2. What is the average distance for the shots I will shoot with that rifle?
      3. What way of hunting will I mainly do with the rifle? (Driven hunt or stalk)
      4. Will I travel a lot with the rifle or just use it at home?
      Consider the above preferences I choose a caliber.
      A.) If I will hunt small game, I choose a less caliber
      B.) If the distance for shooting will be further I will go for a caliber with better ballistics.
      C.) If it is for driven hunt, I prefer a heavier caliber.
      D.) If I travel a lot with the rifle, I choose a caliber that is common and I can find ammunitions all over the world.
      .
      I hope this helped you out some.
      I wish you a nice day,
      Tobias

      @@RedMooseHunting 9,3x62😀 My favourite calibre. At shorter range on heavy vital game 286gr Swift A-frame. On longer ranges 286gr Nosler Partition. Nosler is softer than A-frame (lover weight retention on higher impact velocity), but with BC of .489 and SD 305 it has excellent expansion and penetration longer ranges.

    What's the main difference between the options for the stock? If you had only one to choose would you go for the standard stock or the MX stock? And why? Thanks

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  2 года назад

      Hi,
      Sorry for late answer. RUclips has stopped sending out mail when people post comments, found your question first now.
      What I would choose, would depend totally on what kind of hunting I mail would do with the rifle. For stalking and highest hunting, I would prefer the MX, but for driven hunt and going in the beat with the dog, I would go with the standar synthetic. I would also make a small change in barrel diameter. For the MX I would prefer the 19 mm more heavy barrel. For driven hunt and dog keeper hunting, I would go for the 17 mm barrel.
      Not said that either of the combinations will work for the other kind of hunt, but this would be my first choice if possible.
      Best regards,
      Tobias

    Hej Tobias,
    Don’t you use windchecker, telemeter, or bino harness ? Why ?
    I do and I think it’s a great confort.

    • @RedMooseHunting

      Olaaf,
      Thanks for your comment.
      Yes, I normally use a wind checker, we forgot to bring it on this trip when we did this video... 😞 It is very good to use. When it comes to bono harness, I use that for my little 8x42 bino. I have not fund any the can hold this big Zeiss 8x56, those I found is made of some kind of "rubber-band" and the stretches out completely by the weight of the 8x56, so that's why I do not have one on this bino, If anyone knows of a bino harness for heavy binoculars, please leave a comment.
      A telemeter, is that a rangefinder? Never heard about this... 😅 For the moment I do not have any range finder. Almost all shoots we shoot is less than 200 meters, and it does not matter with the bullet drop in this range anyway on those game we normally shoot (fallow, red deer etc.) If I hunt in areas that I can expect longer range, I normally will bring some kind of range finder, it is a good device.

    • @olaafbrentot

      Red Moose Hunting Thanx for your answer. I have a bino Harness from Sitka, that goes perfectly with my bino (bushnell trophy extrem 8x56). The zipper is a bit noisy so I open it at the beginning and keep the holster closed just with the magnet. And it has 2 side pockets, perfect to welcome the windchecker or even the gps.
      Totally recommand it.
      And the telemeter/range finder, I find it very usefull cause I hunt mostly in Provence (southern France) with sometimes strong declivity so it helps to ajust the aiming with the angle. It’s not only about distance but also about angles. But I guess on a more flat land it’s not that important, mostly if you shoot under 200m length.

      @@olaafbrentot
      Nice, thanks for the respons. I'll check out the Sitka bino harness. Yes, of course the angles is of great importance, I did not even think about it, since where I normally hunt it is flat of very small variations in height, so no need for calculating this, but for sure when hunting in mountain or similar terrain, this is a great factor to consider.

    That’s a great idea using the mini site don’t think it would work on my Blaser R8 and Delta scope. I shoot a .270 or 6.5Creedmoor. Viper flex sticks and I have a Spartan bipod but to be honest it’s a nice thing to look at but don’t think they are value for money. I shoot eldx too in my 6.5 super accurate.

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  5 лет назад

      Timmy,
      Thanks for sharing. I'm thinking a little about trying the 6,5 Creedmoor this year, but since I'm travelling with my rifle I'm a little uncertain... When it comes to value of the equipment it is always hard to advice or tell, it is so individual. Some hunters like a more affordable rifle set-up others value a nicer rifle and scope. Probably both hunters will shot as many animals if they hunt during the same circumstances, as long as they are equal skilled. So in the long run it is all about the "feeling" and what one values. I can honestly say that I did not think much about the small holosight in to until I used it for some hunts. Now, I will probably have one on top for the rest of my life as a hunter, I completely love it, especially on a high magnification scope it serves a great purpose. BUT I can also say that I'm not sure I would recommend it for everyone. I think those who will value it most is hunters into game culling in distances over 100 meter, that need to take out several animals in one group fast an effective. For normal hunting or trophy hunts, it is still usable but it do not serve this purpose.
      Timmy, I wish you a nice day!

      Red Moose Hunting makes perfect sense 6.5cm ammo is hard to get .308 is always easy but I will say you can get factory 156gr rounds and my favourite the 143eldx. Very good mix but the recoil is about half .308. I have had two shoulder surgeries so I prefer it. In the uk we shoot a lot of woodland deer so it’s 100m or less which makes your setup very interesting for me.

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  5 лет назад

      @@tchadwic82 Do you use suppressor? I do not like recoil, but with a suppressor mounted on the .308W it is very soft, but my old 6,6x55 was even less... ;-) Would think that the 6,5 creedmoor would be like the 6,5x55 when it comes to recoil.

    • @tchadwic82
      @tchadwic82 5 лет назад +1

      Red Moose Hunting yep I use a Haukkasen moderator it’s good. My .270 was very hard to shoot at the range even with the moderator but the 6.5 is so soft I can barely notice the difference between it and my 22.250 so it means you can shoot at a range and practice all day in comfort. Of course when the blood is pumping on game you never notice the recoil. I also found quad sticks to make it very easy to shoot too.

    I agree with the tripod stands, but they're still not good enough for me on their own as they only have one point of support, so I use an additional wooden stick which I hold with my left hand against the stock all the way in by the armpit, which I just guide it around with the inner side of my left foot, should I need to adjust my aim. This almost completely stabilizes my vertical axis, so I only have to concentrate on getting my horizontal axis still and it makes it very easy and fast for me to get an almost completely steady aim before I pull the trigger. The Viper Flex/Mjølner type sticks are just too annoying to move around. Especially when you have to adjust your horizontal axis, because the game suddenly moves beyond what the front rubber rest allows for horizontal aim adjustment. You quickly end up having to move the whole stick to accommodate the new placement of the game (and it may move on you repeatedly too!) and it also increases the risk of detection as you fumble around for a new position. When hunting from towers or ladders, I use rear-sticks too. I simply rest the front of the rifle on the tower edges or the front rifle rest of the ladder and let the rear-stick stand on either the floor or the seat. Works beautifully.
