HOW DOES SILENCERS AND BARREL LENGHT EFFECT THE SPEED OF THE BULLET?

  • In this video we test if a silencer affects the speed of the bullet when shooting. We test two different Stalon silencers, the Stalon X silencer, and the Stalon Victor L silencer. We also made a test to compare two different barrel lengths. We shoot both with a 51 cm /20 inches) and a 45 cm (17,7 inches) barrels.
    We use our Steel Action HS rifles in caliber .308WIN.
    0:33 How will we do the test and what equipment will we use.
    2:52 Some shooting
    5:09 The result of the test.

    Awesome Video! Are you still happy with the X108? Or would you go with the XE108? I am trying to decide, rifle is a Blaser R8 308 52cm barrel.
    Thank you, keep up the great content!

      Hi,
      I am happy that you like our content.
      It is very little difference between these silencers, in the end, I would say it comes down to personal preference. If the preference it 52 cm barrel, I would try both silencers on the rifle in the store, and try to get a feeling for which one you like the most due to how the balance is for you.
      If you consider also the option to shorten the barrel, it will not affect the speed or the general performance almost anything. For example, if I will use the rifle mainly for going in the beat with my dog or for searching for a wounded game, I would cut the barrel to 45 cm and choose the X108. In this situation, I prefer a short rifle. If I would mainly use the rifle for highseat/stalking, I would probably keep the 52 cm and maybe go for the XE108, since the will give you some few more dB lower noise and you will get a some few 100 grams heavier rifle, which I like and do not care about carrying when stalking or hunting from high-seat.
      If you will mainly use it for driven hunt, if it was my rifle I would keep it 52 cm, and choose the XE108 or X108, only considering choosing the silencer that gave the rifle the best balance.
      I am not an expert, this is only how I myself think and make my choice and I hope this can help you in some way to make the choice that is best for you. Unfortunately, there is not a "black or white" answer to your question, as I see it.
      I wish you a nice evening,
      Tobias

      Red Moose Hunting Hello Tobias,
      thank you for your fast and detailed answer!
      The R8 is used for driven hunts as well as hunting from a high seat. It is sort of my do-it-all-rifle. So I think your advice to feel the difference regarding weight and balance is the proper way to go about it. I will keep the barrel at 52cm, I am quite happy with it to be honest. The R8 is quite short anyways. Maybe I will add a Steel Action at some point, you show case them nicely 😉
      Have a nice evening as well and Waidmannsheil from Austria!🌲 Jakob

      @@Vulvaetix Yes, I think that is a good choice. No need to cut the barrel for that kind of hunting. You will be very happy with any of the two X-Stalon silencer you will choose.

    Good video. I enjoy suppressors for hunting as well.
    Regarding the Steel Action rifle, and the problem with ejecting cases. I have seen this on several Steel Action rifles with scopes mounted with medium to big windage adjustment knob. I think this is a serious design problem, and it is the reason why I have not purchased one of their rifles.
    Sure some use the rifle only for stalking, but this is not really the reason why you purchase a straight pull rifle. I need absolutely reliable extraction and as the design is right now, Steel Action simply does not deliver that. Sadly it seems that Steel Action does not knowledge this, at least not the last time I spoke with them, despite the obvious evidence.

    Hey thanks for this great video! I want to buy a steel action in .308 that I want to run with a silencer. So this video was very helpful. I am just unsure which barrel length to go for. Since the bullet speed is more or less the same: Is there any noticeable difference in noise or accuracy between the different barrel? I also imagine that the long barrel version is noticeably more front-heavy. Personally Tobias, which barrel length would you recommend?

    Hi Tobias, thanks for sharing. Is plausible due to the fact, that suppressor acts somewhat like a barrel extension (gasses stay longer behind the bullet). You have shown two 308s, in the past you have shot the 9.3x62, have you in general switched over to the 308 for driven hunts?
    I am running in general a 30-06, but was wondering if a “upgrade” to a 9.3 would be beneficial for driven wild boars. Thanks Mike

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  4 года назад +2

      Mike,
      Absolutely, the silencer obviously is not as tight as a barrel, but in some way, the gases will affect the bullet, and as shown in this test it gets a little more speed.
      A .308WIN will definitely work for driven wild boar. I still prefer the 9,3x62 (with silencer and comb raiser, a very essential add on, especially on a larger caliber). The reason I am doing this test on my .308Ws is: 1. I do only own 1 9,3, so I could only test one barrel length. 2. I know that the .308WIN is more widely spread and I would think a test of the .308WIN would be more appreciated. However, I can do a new test with the 9,3 and lend a rifle in a different caliber if some of you guys would like that.
      The reason I have a .308WIN with the synthetic stock is that it was the only one available. I wanted a 8x57 for my "dog-rifle" (hunting wild boar with my dog), because I wanted to test a new caliber, but the synthetic stock is not yet available for the Steel Action HM.
      To answer your last question regarding the .30-06 vs. 9,3. It totally depends on personal preference and I personally would prefer the 9,3, but I could easily go with a .30-06. The things I consider are among others:
      1. Where do I hunt and is there ammunition available if I lose my ammo, I want to be able to buy new on-site.
      2. How many rifles can you own? Here in Sweden, we can only own 6 guns/rifles.
      3. How often do you participate in Driven Hunts? Is it essential for a specialized rifle or can you use a rifle you normally use for another kind of hunting?
      This is little how I think regarding the rifles I own.
      I wish you a nice evening.

    Hi, thx for this interesting test, but I have some questions about it: What about the modular synthetic stock you are using, is it a prototype?
    I took a look on the site of steel action, but I could not find it there.
    I would like to have a stock like your's on an HM System.
    Why are you turning the rifle while repeteering? Are there any issues? Looks like the rifle dosn't throw out the used cartiges correctly.

      @RedMooseHunting  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Carsten,
      I am glad you like the video.
      The synthetic stock you can buy today either on its own or when buying a new rifle. It is very easy to change stock, you maybe want a wooden stock for some hunts or MX stock. The comb raiser has www.kolvkam.se mounted for my here in Sweden. They do a lot of comb raisers for hunters all over Europe. you can contact them at info@kolvkam.se for an inquiry.
      In general, there is no issue, in this specific combination of cartridge, scope, and rifle, I have an issue with some empty shells hitting the adjustment knob on the scope and bounce back into the rifle. After this hunting season, I will let the gunsmith check it up.
      I wish you a nice day!

    Hej Tobias och tack för mycket bra test!! jag står i begrepp att inhandla en Steel Action i cal 308 men velar med piplängden, ja kommer ha ljuddämpare på , ser du någon nackdel med 45 pipan mer än den lite lägre farten? om du skulle valt en idag skulle du tagit 45 eller 51?och har du fått ordning på det att hylsorna studsar mot kikaren?

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  4 года назад

      Hej,
      Tack för din kommentar. Avseende längden så hade jag valt det som du anser ger dig bäst balans och känsla i vapnet. Den lilla skillnaden i hastighet är en "icke-fråga" för mig när det gäller normal jakt. Så vill du ha ett kort vapen, bara kapa pipan ;-) Du kan kapa den till 45 cm, men jag rekommenderar att välja 45,5 eller 46 cm, skulle du av någon anledning skada kröningen på pipan, så fins det lite marginal för en vapensmed att justera detta. Är pipan 45 cm, så kan man inte kapa den mer utan att den blir olaglig i Sverige.
      Avseende mitt problemet hylsorna, så har jag inte hunnit dra i det, men jag har koll på ganska många som jagar med Steel Action och det är inget generellt problem. Jag har en väldigt olycklig kombination av pipa, sikte och den exakta placeringen där "knopparna" till justeringen hamnar. Köper du en ny bössa idag, så mig veterligen ha man från fabrik dessutom gjort en generell justering så att bössan kastar hylsorna i en något flackar vinkel. Så det skall inte vara några som helst problem vid ny köp av bössa idag, oavsett vilken kikare du kommer använda.
      Hoppas detta hjälpte dig något.
      Ha en bra kväll!

    What is the shortest barrel for 308, 9,3 x62 You could recommend for driven hunt ? how does it ifluence on accuracy in these particular calibers. Great test by the way :)

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  3 года назад +1

      Glad you like the test.
      I myself have both a 9,3x62 and two .308 win. I have silencers on all of the rifles.
      My 9,3x62 have a 57 cm barrel. It works with a shorter barrel, but you will lose speed. If you want a shorter barrel I would recommend choosing a caliber more suited for short barrels, like the 8x57. The powder from a 9,3x62 need time in the barrel to burn. If you like a 9 mm caliber and need a short barrel, I would suggest looking at .358 win or something like that. However, you will probably need to reload your own ammunition.
      The .308 win very well in a short barrel. It loses very little speed. You can see both my .308win rifles in the video and compare the barrel length with speed.
      I think like this: If I will have a rifle only for being on driven hunts as a shooter on a stand. I will prefer a longer heavier barrel that is more balanced and I shot better with a rifle like that. Compared with a short light rifle. A short rifle for my gets more "flimsy" and I shot not as well. However, when going with the dog inside the beat, I prefer a short rifle and if I shot, it normally is a very short distance, so I can sacrifice some accuracy to have a shorter rifle.
      Your question was if the accuracy is affected in the 9,3x62 if you cut the barrel. I would say that my experience is that it is not affected. It can depend on the bullet you choose, but I have had 9,3x62 in 47 cm barrel, and it shot very good with many different bullets. However, it but much powder outside the barrel and I could have had an 8x57 instead and got the same effect for the bullet.
      I hope this answered some of your questions.

      We've been able to get licenses for suppressors for quite a few years before here in Sweden and since july of last year we don't even need a license. It's enough to own a gun that the suppressor fits. This is probably the only instance where our laws are more pro-gun =D
      With the old licensing system, it was very hard to get a license for suppressing a 22 LR. Practically only professional hunters working near houses and towns could get them. Now, we can just go buy one over the counter if we bring our rifle with us to show that the suppressor fits.

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  2 года назад

      I do not know if I do not understand your question. Yes, we know that cutting the barrel will decrease the speed and the speed stated at the box of ammo is normally measured with 60-65 cm barrel.
      What we wanted to test, is how the silencer effect the speed, is does not matter what speed it says on the box, we compare the speed with and without silencer, when using the same barrel. If the barrel is 45, 55 or 65 cm should not effect the differ between with or without silencer, but of course, if we would use a longer barrel in the same test, we would probably get a higher speed.

    Hello friends, does anyone know the exact caliber of Kalashnikov silencer? Thank you

    Liked your video.
    I'm using 57 cm barrel with 30-06 sprg. And silencer on. It's great. No complaints so far.
    But how about power? I heard that silencer reduce bullet power. I think it does it a bit but not that much so it's noticeable.

      Glad you likes the video. Now, since the speed increase also the power increase, even if it is very little. ;-)

      E=1/2*(MV^2) or energy equals 1/2 mass times the speed to the second power. So from above video the conclusion is no or a very marginal energy increase due to the slight increase of bullet speed. Given the small sample size, the slight increase of speed seen is however marginal and probably within the statistical variance of the ammo and the measuring device.

      @@Targa2Tasmania Yes, I totally agree. We shot more shots than shown in the video, just to make sure that our test results were good. and we all time got app. the same results.

    Måste du hälla ur hylsorna?

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  4 года назад

      Vissa hylsor slår i "knoppen" för justeringen till siktet och studsar in i bössan igen. Har inte hunnit fixa det, får ta det efter säsongen är slut. Verkar vara en olycklig kombination av sikte, ammo och utkastet på bössan.

    You have to dump the empty each time? That negates any speed saved with the straight pull...

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  4 года назад +1

      I have an issue with a the empty shells hitting the adjustment knobs on the sight and bounce back into the action. I just need to make some small adjustments to the mountings and this issue will be gone.

    What about accuracy?

    • @RedMooseHunting
      @RedMooseHunting  4 года назад +2

      Do you mean how the silencer affects accuracy? In all cases, I know a silencer either does not affect the accuracy or it in most cases improves it. Both because the silencer seems to stabilize the barrel some and because the silencer reduces the recoil, the shooter shots better.
      Happy New Year to you!
