HOWARD CITY, Mich. - Police reports are shedding new light on what was going on inside an RV that led police on a chase through multiple counties in June.
Linda Mankel, 49, was arrested following a pursuit that began after a Michigan State Police trooper saw the RV she was allegedly driving run a red light at M-46 and M-91. The trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop at that time, but the RV apparently refused to stop.
Another trooper threw out spike strips near M-82 and Amy School. According to a police report, the RV then veered to strike the trooper who deployed the strip. At that point, an official pursuit was initiated by the troopers.
Troopers were able to get the RV to stop with a pit maneuver as the RV was attempting to leave US-131 at Exit 104 in Kent County.

The lag time for permission to pit could've been fatal. Officer should've been allowed to make a judgement call in these situations and just pit while he had the small window of opportunity. C'mon, she was going the wrong way entering a freeway!

Should have pitted it out when they were on that on ramp. Asking and waiting for permission when that was the only place that no other cars would have been involved. But they let that fool get on the road and put every one of the people in danger.

This was irritating to watch. After the first 50 with the squad the pursuit should have been forcibly stopped the moment they merged going the wrong way. This could have been 100% fatal to someone uninvolved MULTIPLE times. The driver showed no problem ramming or aiming at troopers and clearly had no problem causing two more 50s going the wrong way. Instead he waited until more civies were in the way... whiskey tango foxtrot.

Why does permission to pit have to be given, meaning, why can't the officer make that split second decision? What next, "Hey sarge, this guy is pointing a gun at me. Permission to shoot." Good grief. This would have been over a long time ago had the officer pitted when she first turned the wrong way on the exit ramp.
I hope the Supervisor was reprimanded for not granting permission to PIT when she got on the interstate going against traffic!!! JMHO

@@My-Say Had there been kids inside, the oddds were far greater that she would have killed them with her extreme reckless driving, especially the longer the pursuit went on, so that's a BS excuse right there. Given the choice, any kids would be far safer with a PIT.

To the one that initially either could not or would not order a pit when it could have been done so safely? You placed everyone on that highway in danger when this weapon was careening the wrong way down a highway! IT IS ON YOU! Y'all can't make these decisions? Resign so someone else can!

Police aren’t in charge of creating policies, it’s people in suits that never served a day in there life that wright and approve these policies. Any cop would’ve been ok with PITTING him but we also don’t wanna lose our job over it.

I see how upset everyone is in these comments about the permission to PIT, and I concur. It's especially stupid because they already have to be PIT certified to do the PIT, so knowing when it's acceptable I'm sure is part of the training, and that should suffice.

I was hoping to watch them get arrested. It amazes me the rim lasted that long and only ceased up because they used the brake.
That RV did NOT veer towards the officer in first seconds and supervisor ignored all requests to PIT. Glad the officer took the inititive on his own.
Wrong! The RV's right side tires were plenty over the painted shoulder line and onto the shoulder, so you're wrong on that. Also, the supervisor actually did 'finally' give him permission to PIT, so the trooper did not take "the initiative on his own". Watch it all again.

When you have a dangerous reckless driver fleeing and they *knowingly* get on a wrong way exit ramp,. not only should it be an automatic PIT approval, but it should be automatic lethal force approval. They coddle these dangerous criminals with zero regard for the public's safety.

No lights and sirens until around 5:30, and they were in a pursuit long before that. These officers endangered everyone on the road until that point.
