    Never underestimate the power of the crowd for their local boy. Taylor is such a great competitor, but the Aussie weathered some storms to pull this off. Good job mate.

  • @honuman39

    The Aussie crowd was the difference. It had a finals atmosphere. Fritz had a ton more pressure than Popyrin not to take anything away from Popyrin who played great.

      Lol Fritz lost at his home slam, the US Open, to a player who can't even make a dent at the Challenger level. He is capable of losing to anyone, anywhere without the crowd's help.

    Fritz didn't even play badly, Popyrin was just absolutely electric in this match. These were quality sets of tennis with two players at the top of their game.

      @@ryancarver585 Wasn't really a choke, Popyrin just flat out played better for the entire match. Returned all his serves so Fritz got very few free points, and had great defensive play.

    I’m shocked. I really thought Taylor turned a new page. He was so impressive at the United Cup. I thought it would carry over. Not to take anything away from Popyrin because he is a solid player and he played great but these are the matches Taylor has to win. If he cross to that next level, he can’t lose these matches. Anyway this is a great opportunity for Ben Shelton who I believed Popyrin plays next.

    • @hihungryimcam
      @hihungryimcam Год назад +5

      I know what you mean, but Popyrin played extremely well. Taylor is still going to have the best season of his career this year (as long as I don't jinx it haha).

    • @Smartkid2387
      @Smartkid2387 Год назад +1

      @@hihungryimcam to me it doesn’t matter. There are few easy matches on tour. Novak lost a set to someone I never heard of in my life. If you are a top player you have to find a way to win a match like this.

      Alexei Popryin I think is about to show us all in 2023 that he is in amongst the elite group of players.
      With a serve, forehand and movement like he has, I don’t see why that’s not likely.

    • @autopiloot
      @autopiloot Год назад +1

      I think you underestimate popyrin. Or at least the way he played this match. I mean, did you see the tiebreak in the 2nd set? With power like Popyrin, accuracy is your one main weakness, but he just couldn't miss. If even the tough shots like crazy angled drive volleys hit with full power go in, there's just not much you can do. The way I see it, this match is by no means to blame on Taylor. I think he actually played incredibly well to match the level Popyrin displayed today

    feeling sorry for Fritz. he also played very well; undoubtedly a great competitor. but unfortunately, he had to survive against the Australian (crowded) supporters also. finally, 113 ranked popyrin was able to take the advantage of his home-country supporters and won the match against ranked-9 Taylor Fritz. definitely, it can be called as an 'upset'

    Huge win for Popyrin and kind of unexpected but I guess playing in front of home crowd really helped him but same can't be said for Murray vs Kokkinakis. I really thought Taylor Fritz was in good form and was expecting him to reach SF. Sometimes you need that experience to keep your head down even when the crowd is against you.

    It is completely unacceptable that Taylor Fritz lost this match. His surface is hard courts! How could he have lost so early in the Aussie Open after all the victories and high quality tennis he played in the last year? There is no other way to spin this other than a massive disappointment.
