I've watched this video maybe 10 times and to me it shows how incredibly intelligent elephants are. She keeps trying different way's to get the baby out and it shows how important older and wise cows are to a herd !
I wish humans were like that (now that I'm an old wise cow!) 😔

I truly adore this video! No matter what herd a baby is from they will do all they can to help and protect. The love n care these amazing animals have for each other is admirable. I can just imagine the ellie who saved the baby saying to her mum ‘why on earth did you allow your baby to get stuck?!?’ Hehe! ❤️❤️

I hope mom had the chance to see the rescue tactic of the matriarch of the second herd. Younger elephants need to learn from the wits and experiences of older ones.
Btw. ca. 75% of the genes for intelligence are passed down to the next generation by the mother, mainly through her X allosome provided for the baby.
Intelligence is a female thing, it's inherited from females / the mom (in case of all mammals).

@@t.r.1457 Thinking about the lives of elephants, it makes sense really. The herds are matriarchal and sons are booted from the herd once they approach sexual maturity. After that, males are mostly driven by procreation while females are mostly driven by herd health and survival.

These are the smartest most resourceful and ethical animals on the planet.
Like in most cases: Animals get in in life risk danger because humans change nature. This is no natural waterhole. Whoever built this concrete construction, it was a badly job. It is narrow and has obviously no exit ramp. The same reason why so many wild animals die in our swimming pools, drain pipes, fences or on the roads.

Elephants are endangered, surely if people see an elephant in distress like this they should try and interrupt the herd to save it? I hope that wound on its head wasn't serious.
On this we must agree to disagree. These watering holes save lives. Even natural watering holes have their risks, from crocs to mud to predators lying in wait. We have robbed them I'm so many of their natural watering holes. Once we alter any of their habitat we alter all of it. Replacing a natural water hole with a water spot is better than just taking away a water hole.

This is one of the rare nature videos that might benefit from music, like a sort of anxious and sad theme early then switches to like heroic triumphant building as the matriarch elephant rescues that baby!
it must be the matriarch., is very inteligent, she studied the situation and later finally rescue the baby.
yea there is another video where the matriarch kill a baby elephant because they dont want him in their group.
I love how Elephants are so gentle most of the times when they do their rescuing of a baby and know how to remain calm and get it done. I wonder if they couldnt get the baby out and were to leave, if the Humans would have helped rescue the Baby; since it is a man made structure? I sure hope so, since they built it and are responsible to a degree and the lions were there ready and waiting. Two things I haved learned on YT, Baby Elephants seemingly by the millions get trapped in some sort of ditch or hole and need to be rescued; and India has an epidemic of dog rescues in what looks like a third world post apocalyptic world. Has there even been any world wars or nuclear type strikes in India in modern day? I know the Mahabharata of ancient India had some Wars going on and even talks about Elephants being burned and fires reigning down in some Cosmic Wars, but nothing in modern times right? Anyway, yeah Elephant Matriarchs! What Human rescuer could say they rescued a Baby Elephant and at the same time, took a few gulps of water and a massive poop bombing; all while clearing the other rubber necking clan out of the way and while Lions were there? Thanks Mathieu. I spend a good deal of time in the bush but I was with a group of Brits and Americans having a short game drive from the "Rovos Rail" train. Most of them were very upset so I hope they see your video.

Hello. Thank you for the comment. Yes vultures are eating the remains of another baby elephant. This footage was taken late October, at the end of the dry season, when animals are facing shortage of food and water.

@sportster1988 No, the whole herd is NOT "matriarchs". "Matriarch" doesn't just mean "female". The terms aren't interchangeable. It specifically refers to the female LEADER of a group or family, thus not all the herd females are THE matriarch.

baby elephants are so clumsy - they must have the best mothers in the world to keep up with them!
maybe that watering hole could be made differently since it seems to be a trap for some wildlife. it is so hard to know exactly what they need. not being able to anticipate it often causes problems.
fortunately in this case moma elephant was very clever and determined!
