DADGAD, DACGAE, DADEAE, CGCGGE (5th B string a step up from the normal G string), DADGBE (2 steps down on the D string)! It's really tough to explain a few of them, but these tunings have helped me with some sick ideas for songwriting! 😉
Even for someone such as myself who does not play guitar, to hear a master such as Mr. Petteway speak, teach and play so easily is inspiring in its own right.
What a great approach to opening up possibilities with this tuning. The personality of the tutor, Al, makes the challenges less daunting, like having a friend pass on tips!! In my senior years it is people like Al who open up new possibilities that I didn't know existed. Thanks for this. I find myself returning to this tutorial time and time again. Roy Fleming
awesome! i was just making incremental changes between tunings i like to play in and different realative keys and i stumbled upon and i thought about this tuning and then i searched and found this and its exactly was i was hoping for a great discovery indeed!!! and thanks for posting a nice view about this tuning :)
Love this! Sounds like a Joni Mitchell tuning. I play in A, E, B, E, F#, B, which is similar to this tuning but if you tune the 4th string C to D (and then obviously it's lower). I use a capo a lot for these open tunings, I rarely play in standard anymore 😂
This was a real finding! CG sounds great. I'll get a try. Let us see. Thank you so much for the wonderful class. And that guitar, wow, a gorgeous piece of wood. All the best.
i stumbled across a very interesting open tuning that is kinda like this one while trying to tune to "magic farmer," and i ended up with cgcgaf#, very beautiful suspended sound, if you like that suspended major/minor sound you can get in dadgad you might like it
Thank you so much for show this beautifful tuning open C well i play also a two songs from open C tuning myself And now i get new ideas how to play more beautiful songs I hope i can try to play this with your good ideas that you show Thank you so much
@@musik102 that's what exactly what "lower strings" means 😆 also because the bottom of the guitar would be the side that lays on your belly, since the top is the one with the pickguard 😁
Nice. I am doing a lot in a similar tuning. Martin Carthy's CGCDGA, I wonder did you need to compensate at the nut for the low C? Perhaps you are not using heavy strings ? Thanks

RIP, Al. For more than your music, you are missed.
Nicely presented. Liked the, "As long as you don't hit the wrong note you're OK!" I've been trying that approach my whole life!! LOL!!
I love Al’s teaching style and way of thinking. Thanks to all for sharing and making this video.
You are opening a whole new avenue of exploration..Great stuff.
Al Pettaway rocks.
Wow! The tone of that guitar is stunning.
You are awesome brother! I’ll have to give that tuning a try!! You and Amy stay healthy during these uncertain times, my friend
This tuning is soooo nice! I could just wander around in it for hours!
I just came across this. Thank you for the share. It seriously opens a whole new world. You explained it perfectly. Great Job !!

Nice chops, also that guitar sounds magnificent.
Thank You!!! Getting inside of this tuning was/is like magic, and you explained it so well, thank you.
Four years after, here i'm getting absort in this beautiful sound.
Thanks mate!
Glad you enjoy it!
Very easy to fallow his instructions on this tuning, after watching others it’s a relief
Al is a great teacher for sure, we're glad you're enjoying our channel!
I like the fact that every video that I've seen with alternate tunings have all used beautiful to describe the sound
DGDGAD is heavenly, but this never occurred to me; should be fun to try. Thanks!
This is a great tuning, it can give some lovely lush chords, lots of things to try with it!
OMG. That sound is amazing
Al Pettaway for president
What kind of fairy dust do some luthiers sprinkle over the guitars they build, seriously?? The clarity of the notes in this guitar.. Simply amazing!
Renoir Bootstrap More like the wood being blessed by the forest gods to sound as buttery as possible. Uh, just lather us up with that sounds.
Excellent Al... this is an inspiring start to evolve the potential of this tuning... there just seems to be so many options .... cheers Al :)

Thanks for the suggestion!
Great video! Thanks. 🙂
Thank you for taking me into the new dimension.
Yeah I found it sounds reminiscent of a band from the '80s called zebra and the tuning for a song called who's behind the door awesome stuff Al.
love it i see more fun times ahead . many thanks al ...
I also got a Jeff Traugott guitar I love this tuning! This tuning can open a new world ! Sounds amazing!
Thanks Al

Dammit, just spent 45 minutes trying to learn your tune "This Just In" in DADGAD. It now becomes clear it was played in CGCGAD!
Thank you for the great lesson!
6:36 that is some nice riff!
Very sweet!!
A very good tune it is CGCGAD so i find news ideas to play this open tuning thank you
Keola Beamer plays a lovely tune, (E Ku'u "Morning Dew" in that (Old Mauna Loa or NI'ihau tuning)
So cool, thanks for taking the time.
Deminds me of two of Dave Evans' tunings: CGDGAD and CGCGAC.
Excellent.......
Gonna try it out!
My hero!
amazing!
nice tuning but wow that guitar sounds amazing!
Aaaah, never though about tuning down the high e, I mostly tuned my guitar like this to get the double triads. Imma have tuh try that.
Tenho usado CGCGA#D, da pra tocar legal tbm
Thanks.
That guitar sounds HUGE. It's rare for me to be mesmerized by a guitar's tone just from a video. Is that a Traugott?
Hi! Yes it's a Traugott R model - some instrument info comes up at the 3:02 mark. Thanks!
Thanks! I had missed that because I was listening more than watching. I recognized the headstock and bridge as Traugott. Man, what a guitar.
👍🎸🎹🎼
Where can I find Chords for cgdgad ...
🔥🔥🔥
Hey Al, what is the bridge string space on this guitar is it 2"1/4 for finger picking
Yes, the string spacing on this one is 2.25". Thanks!
Thump UP
"as Long as you don,t hit THE wrong note" 😁
cool // :-) thanks
Al Petteway um grande mestre...muito bom tenho aprendido muito...
These tuning is well suited for Chinese guqin harmonics? I'm leaving the same boring old open tuning now.
How do you stop buzzing strings.?.
Using a heavier guage string will sometimes help. Just be careful and watch the tension when you tune it back up to standard pitch.
@@DreamGuitars thank you.
@@DreamGuitars do you use longer scale (25.5") for tuning down this low?
Nice. I am doing a lot in a similar tuning. Martin Carthy's CGCDGA, I wonder did you need to compensate at the nut for the low C? Perhaps you are not using heavy strings ?
Thanks
I wonder if that guitar has a slightly longer scale.
Very similar to nick drake CGCFCE tuning for songs like “Pink Moon”
Thnx Al.... Follow you for Facebook !
Very good lesson, thank you. . Can I ask you please.. what microphones you use for these recordings ? What a great sound.
What is the thickest gauge string on that guitar? Awesome tuning.
C sic?
lol
That’s a beautiful open C major 5th 9th tuning, I think.

What string gauge did you use sir?
I like C sick
😓broke my A string trying to make it a C😓
All alternative tunings are at least soporific. You smile 1 hour and after you sleep.
Great advice...dont hit the wrong note and youll be ok...I wonder if John Fahey knew that.....
wow i didn't know gary oldman could play guitar too lol
Try calling it'Dave Evans' tuning? He invented it!
Max Cuthbert Which Dave Evans? Fascinating info... Would love to know more. Thanks!

or one can go: D A D A B E, much less tuning involved...
Not as metal without the drop C, tho \mm/
It should be called the IOMMI tuning.
More mono- tonal chords and droning notes 👎🏻
Why not start with a demo of what it sounds like instead of making us sit through an intro. YT vids are always bass ackwards.
