  • My daughter's 2017 Mid year Macbook Pro 13 inch two thunderbolt port A1708 ran out of space (we only got the 128G SSD). Fortunately, I found that this is one of the last macbook pros you can change the SSD on! Apparently you cannot change the SSDs on the Touch bar models or any Macbook that is more recent , as they are soldered onto the logic board.
    BEFORE YOU START
    1) make sure to find out what format is your current SSD (ours was APFS) . After you install your new SSD, you will need to use Disk Utilities to format it to the same format!
    2) make a Time Machine backup of your current SSD (or make a clone) onto an external drive
    3) Buy a new SSD and adapter(if necessary), I bought these:
    SSD:
Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2242 DRAM-Less Low Power Internal High Performance SSD (SB-1342-1TB)
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
    Adapter:
    Sintech M.2 NVMe SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade 2016 2017 13" MacBook PRO A1708 Non-Touch Bar Models(Late 2016-Mid 2017 Year)
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08...
    4) You will need the following tools (kits are available on Amazon. I happened to have them at hand)
5-Point Torx Plus 1.2 (pentalobe compatible) screwdriver (for the screws on the oustide)
    T5 1.5 (for screws inside)
    Suction cup
    Anti-static wristband (probably a good idea www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01... )

Im wondering if i should sell this and buy macbook mini m1 instead ( i dont need mobile use) or upgrade to 1tb. What do u guys think i should do, the m1 has powerful gpu/cpu power and very affordable. Need some ideas lol. Cheers.

I changed mine last month (Jan-21) to 512GB using the same sabrent rocket ssd and it works fine so far. Did noticed the battery life take a dip but not a major concern.
What I found out the trickiest part was to format the drive in recovery mode as it didn’t mount and had to reboot again to start the process. After that due to some issues I could not install the OS as the drive was in HFS+ not APFS as that option wasn’t available at formatting stage. After some googling and youtube tutorial search, I managed to make the drive formatted as APFS and install the OS afterwards.
It was quite an experience for me and quite satisfied with the result as well..Now I don’t have to be very mindful of what I keep in the macbook compared when to it had measly 128 GB. Planning to upgrade it to either 1 TB or 2 TB in couple of months time as those have higher write speed than the 512 GB version.

HI Khalis, thanks for sharing your experience and glad everything is working! I do remember we had some issues formatting the new SSD , and I recall that the APFS option was not very obvious in the choices presented when asked to format. I think we had to change a different option, then the APFS option came up. Sorry its kind of vague. Glad you figured it out!

I've upgraded my A1708 to the Sabrent 1tb from the stock 128gb in December 2020. I went to install a fresh copy of the OS from a bootable Mojave USB, but Mojave's Disk Utility doesn't allow you to format your new drive to APFS. But you can format the drive for APFS using Terminal instead. After installing the OS I booted the Mac into Safe mode to clear caches, then I reset the PRAM and Power Management and enabled the TRIM command in Terminal. So far I am not having any battery drain issues or, as some have reported, the flashing question mark that sometimes appears if you boot the Mac with power connected. The only thing I have noticed is, that after a few days of continuous use, the mac starts to stutter and slow down. A shutdown and restart clears this for me. It is not a major issue for me; the benefits of having so much more storage space out weighs this one niggle. I used the iFixit website as a guide to doing the upgrade.

    • @time1187
      @time1187 3 года назад

@@d3fenc367 Good to know that it works alright for you too. I just knew about TRIM command when you mentioned it as I have never heard everybody else talk about it.
For me there is no noticeable slow down as I always shut it down after done using it and occasionally let it in sleep mode especially when I’m out for a short while..nothing of major concern so far. I fully agree the benefits outweigh the cons and pretty happy with that!

Quick update: So the macbook has been working fine since the upgrade. One thing that my daughter noticed is that battery life has taken a hit. I looked online and apparently this happens when you use a non-apple SSD. It has to do with power management not supported with these non-apple SSDs. Hi Vincent! I remember that i did not have to afix the bolt to the adapter. All I had to do is slide the SSD onto the adapter and use one of the small screws to afix it. I used a 2242 SSD. It appears that if you use a 2230 SSD you may have to do what you are describing, using some additional screws/bolt that were included with the adapter ina clear plastic bag. Hope this helps!

I've got it now, thank you!
However, I deleted the new SSD directly in the hard disk utility on the left and then partitioned it without first "showing all devices" and then deleting and partitioning the Sabrent SSD, I hope you know what I mean. Only then did I see that the Sabrent was displayed to me and then I did the same again for the now correct SSD, everything went well, but I'm afraid that I might have "broken" something by deleting 2 media directly and reformatted ..
would that be bad? I hope I could explain the problem
