Fantastic video! I was able to upgrade an old A1708 MacBook Pro and then donate it to a volunteer shelter where folks use the MacBook for creating resumes, printing them, surfing the Internet and posting their resumes and responding to recruiters, and once in a while receiving an e-mail for a in-person interview. Your hardware upgrade video has continuously contributes to society. Thank you very much!
Thanks for this video and for the comments. I successfully upgraded the 128 GB SSD into a 2 TB SSD. First the system disk utility didn't find the new SSD when started from the mac itself. When started from another external system disk, the disk utility found the 2 TB SSD. After formatting the Sabrent SSD as explained in the video and restoring from the time machine backup, the mac is exactly as it was before with the big difference that now there is 1900 GB free space there and the mac is running quicker and smoothly ;-)
Thanks for the video, great tutorial. I have just done this upgrade of SSD on my MacBook Pro 2017. For the removal of existing SSD and the installation of the new SSD Sabrent 512GB no issue at all. Just be careful not to force anything, be delicate and make sure you reconnect the battery connectors properly, with no force. The restart was successful, just important info, missing in this video, it that when you restart you have to keep pressed Command + r keys to reinstall the OS system that was installed, or use Command + Option + R to install the latest Apple OS. The computer will then ask you to select the internet network and prompt the password, than it will communicate via internet and this phase takes around 5 minutes. Once completed, the system will open the Utilities interface and you have to select Disk Utility to erase the new SSD to format it, then the OS reinstallation. Mine was to reinstall High Sierra and it took 15' at least. Overall 1 hour job, not difficult thanks to this tutorial.
There's a lot of thing to take into consideration, 1st. Dont use your metal screwdriver to pull that battery connector, the last thing you want is create an accidental short. 2nd. Instead of pulling the ssd that way, better took off those speaker bellow the ssd first. Pulling it like that might accidentally broke the socket on the board. 3rd. You dont have to unplug those trackpad cable. Just the battery.
Hi there, I think I may have accidentally short circuited while disconnecting the battery connector, because my laptop won’t turn on. Do you know if there’s anyway to fix this? Any help would be appreciated
Thank you for the guide. Just used the $9 NFHK A1708 NVME adapter paired with a Western Digital SN740 512GB SSD size 2242 open box I got off eBay for $35. Great pairing!!! Im getting 2800 MB/S Read and 2600 MB/s write. I can vouch that it wakes up from sleep mode too! What huge improvement over the stock 128 GB drive!!!! Made a Ventura USB boot drive and did everything off that rather and the online installer.... and the whole process took 30 min max. I normally would use a sintech adapter, but this is budget beater build for work. If you use a NFHK adapter, the gold piece holds the SSD, and the silver screw screws in from underneath LOL . It stared at if for 5 min before I figured it out.
I recommend creating a Mojave boot installer before removing the original SSD. You may find the new disk is not recognised in Disk Utility but it will be if you start up with the boot installer. You then complete the new install and restore using the Time Machine back up.
Sorry for noob question. I heard about it a lot. But what is "Disk Utility"? Is that different with "Boot Installer"? I wanna try to upgrade my old macbook by myself. But so far I only tried upgrading my windows PC and I never had this kind of "disclaimer".

Great tutorial, one of the best I've seen regarding SSD upgrade for the 2017 MacBook Pro. Thinking of upgrading mine but have no experience so am unsure.
You are right, this is by far the easiest and cheapest upgrade to a macbook pro I have seen. I just bought the original ssd of 1tb for close to $ 600 american dollars and i guess will see how it goes. I have seen it where they use longer ssd as an upgrade instead of what he is using . This by far it is cheaper and easier do not have to worry about taping the excess of ssd. I an only concerned with the adapter being the communicator as opposed to using the ssd as a direct option, that is why i got the original instead of this, but if budget is limited this is a good option. good luck on your upgrade i was on the fence too ( macs are not cheap) but one day just ordered the set of screwdrivers and carefully opened and that was all. be careful with the inside parts they are fragile but yo can do it. good luck.
Generally good video! This procedure may have looked easy, but really, even just removing that small flat battery cable in itself is tricky (beginning at 2:20). This video does not seem to show that there is a small 'latch' that has to be raised to unlock the cable. Pulling out the smaller flat battery cable without unlocking it is asking for issues and this video does not show that part clearly. It might be worth the $50 to ask a pro to do it. At least they can install and you can handle the OS reinstall part. As another comment mentioned, it is not necessary to remove the trackpad flat cable. (At 2:01) Otherwise, the steps are correct and this is a good upgrade as the Sabrent SSD will add a lot of speed to disk operations and can increase the overall speed of the laptop and Make it usable longer.
You should have placed the camera on the other side (front of you) or above the laptop. Your hands are blocking the view of the things you are doing. Anyway, it's a very helpful video, specially for those who really wants/need the upgrade. Cheers!
How do you deal the back casing not being flat anymore? MacBook won’t lay evenly...wobbles side to side a bit as the new ssd protrudes a bit, causing a bump in the back casing.
Did the upgrade yesterday and everything works beautifully now. A few words of advice here, so you can learn from some of my failures: 1. If you have Big Sur installed on your machine before you swap the SSD, make sure to upgrade to Monterey *before* swapping the SSD. Reason being that there is a high chance that otherwise you will get a hanging bootup and a message that says something on the lines of "A required firmware update could not be installed". From then on your are SOL and have to put the old drive back in to do the update to Monterey. After that, everything is relatively smooth sailing. I know doing the Monterey update on a drive that you do not plan on using anymore is a pain in the neck but it will save you from the even bigger pain in the neck of having do everything else twice. Ask me how I know.... 2. Keep track of the location of those bottom plate screws! The screws need to go back in the same place that you take them out of. This is important. On this Macbook, the bottom plate has several different screw types (At least three). If you put the wrong screw in, you might end up with a screw that sticks out. Resist the temptation to try cranking it in because your think the threads are rubbish (they are not). If the screw does not go in fully when hand tightening it, you have the wrong screw for that location. It is not as bad as in the iPhone where a screw that is .2mm too long in the wrong place might brick your logic board but still. If you force things, you might end up stripping threads, which (for all practical purposes) is impossible to fix. Take out the screws and tape them down on a piece of paper, so you can get an orientation where the screw came out of. If you have a magnetic plate, even better. Luckily I was prepared for that one. 3. The bottom cover plate on the A1708 does not come off that easily. At least it did not on my machine. I used two guitar picks to get into the edge of the case at the hinges, below the display. Be gentle. Once you get in there, you can slide the guitar pick all the way around. When there is resistance, do not be afraid and keep pushing along the edge - the bottom plate is snapped into place in six spots, and those snaps are a rather tight fit. Once you are done, you might notice that the bottom plate is still stuck around the edge where the display is located. This is the trickier bit, because in that place, the plate is held on by a slide-in mechanism. Bend the bottom plate up very slightly at the edge opposite the display so you can safely get a hold, then pull carefully. On mine, the plate released rather suddenly, so be mindful of that. I took nearly 15 minutes to figure that out, but I also was very nervous about pulling or pushing too hard on things that might not like being pulled or pushed. 4. Take your time. You definitely do not want to do this in a hurry.
Hi! I'm still running on Catalina(chose not to upgrade because storage haha), should I upgrade to Monterey before upgrading the SSD as well? Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for the video this helped me upgrade my late 2016 MPB. Only issue i encountered is: 1. Cannot install windows 10 through boot camp. Instead. I did manual install. Based on searching its due to 3rd party adapter/ssd drivers. Everything else works fine. Thx again.
Great video. I'm now planning to upgrade my A1708 as well. So, many many thanks for these instructions! Just one question: Does anyone know if there is a enclosure for the removed Apple SSD with which it can be used as a normal external ssd on mac or windows?
If you're getting an error that says that you cannot connect to Apple's servers, instead of pressing command and R, you should press option command and R. This should bring you to the newer utility where you can actually install a newer Mac OS version. And if you're still getting that error you should try and connect to another Wi-Fi if possible. These two steps helped me resolve the issue.
Thanks for the tutorial. But the transfer of MAC OS with the data from your old SSD would have been a lot easier if you bought a USB casing for the NVMe SSD, and used SuperDuper to clone your old SSD to the new SSD before installing it to your macbook pro. Anyway, thanks for the tutorial. Let me head over to Amazon to buy the 2242 SSD. Cheers.
Many thanks for sharing this information. Quick question: why this option with the adapter is better than replacing it directly with an SDD as the original? Many thanks for your answer!
I tried this using the adapter and Sabrent drive. It worked but my computer would not sleep when I shut the lid. Switched back to the Apple one and everything was fine. I would recommend buying a used Apple a1708 drive from eBay or somewhere.
Hi, just want to know, how is the performance experience till now, post upgrading the SSD? Did you face any issues apart from the overheating problem? I would like to understand if this solution is an effective long term solution or not!
Hi! thanks for a nice and clear video guide. One question though. Are there any specific brand of 2242 ssd I should pick and/or avoid? Thoughts about Kingspec and KingDian brands? Would appreciate your help. Thanks!
Your hands are in the way for the most intricate and important parts. The first thing that you disconnected, I couldn’t see what you were doing and accidentally peeled the tape off of the microchip it’s attached to, and now my lap won’t even turn on. A costly mistake, considering I didn’t have to detach that first mechanism in order to do this upgrade. Where can I find a replacement part for it?

Only then did I see that the Sabrent was displayed to me and then I did the same again for the now correct SSD, everything went well, but I'm afraid that I might have "broken" something by deleting 2 media directly and reformatted .. would that be bad? I hope I could explain the problem
Followed your steps same ssd same adaptor installed big sur installed ok everything works as it should apart from it wont restart i have to hold the power button to restart the MBP and i get a NO MCA ERROR REPORT.

It happens to me as well. Like when I shut down, unplug, pack it up and go; I too get the folder with question mark on it when I startup start location. Both the adapter and ssd are seated securely and I’ve got the SSD screwed to the adapter as designed.. I PRAM it (2 chimes & release on 3rd) and it everything works fine. It’s probably because I told my machine to never put hard drive to sleep.

Cheers.
True but usb casing for NVMe SSD costs around $50 hence thought to get fresh installed directly
I like carbon copy clone better
Hi, good tutorial, question: do you have the links to the products you are installing?
Many thanks for sharing this information. Quick question: why this option with the adapter is better than replacing it directly with an SDD as the original? Many thanks for your answer!
I tried this using the adapter and Sabrent drive. It worked but my computer would not sleep when I shut the lid. Switched back to the Apple one and everything was fine. I would recommend buying a used Apple a1708 drive from eBay or somewhere.
Great video. Its the same if you have the same macbook pro modell but touchbar ?
Thanks for the video! could you send us the link where you bought all the material?
Hi, just want to know, how is the performance experience till now, post upgrading the SSD? Did you face any issues apart from the overheating problem? I would like to understand if this solution is an effective long term solution or not!
Thanks for this video! Do you know if this would also work kn a 2017 MacBook Pro A1706?
This is really nice but does this mean when you put a new ssd without macOS in a macbook it automatically reinstalls macsOS?
Hello,
My Macbook does not recognize the 2242 disk. Do you have a solution?
Thanks
could you put the links to the adapter and NVME SSD in the description?
Hi! thanks for a nice and clear video guide.
Amazing toturial... Thanks
One question: Is this reliable or just fix for 1 or two years?
Thanks for the video! I was wondering about 2280 ssd. Aren’t they faster than 2242 ssd?
hi great video, I have installed a western digital SSD and now the battery is awful. Standby battery drain is terrible. Has been installed for a few months now. what can you suggest?
Can you update how its performing now please? How is the battery now compare to the stock drive? Thanks in advance.
It’s peforming absolutely great
I think this is the one he is using, but they send it from europe:

nice to meet you. I also want to upgrade my MacBook (a1708). Are you using the extracted ssd? Do you have an external case to use? I want to use the ssd I pulled from the macbook.
I was wondering if this sabrent ssd is still working well. I've read reviews on amazon of the drive not working after a couple months. Just wondering if you had any issues after a significant amount of use.
I recommend buying oem off eBay or Amazon. This ssd DRAINS your battery fast, just on standby
Would this continue the max to work as normal seen as this is a third party replacement . I have a 15” 2017 MacBook Pro and 128 gig isn’t even enough for my photos and videos
Thanks, I have added larger drives to my 2009 MacBook pro & bought this thinking same, after was told no... for 2 years looking for bigger drive to buy... no luck
So happy to find this.... will update...

Looking for ram update while I'm waiting for ssd drive
Very good video, congratulations; I am wondering if for the 2016 model the procedure is the same?, please let me know
What's the Apple-brand size / stats? ie, if I were to shop for Apple-brand?
Excellent Thanks ...!!! this information is amazing but could put links to buy NVR and SSD please, in all components.
Thanks for the video. Is that connector and the NVMe card the same for the 15' Macbook pro. I've just purchased my 2017 and trying to get all needed to upgrade.
What did you plug your old ssd into in order to use it as an external drive to boot from? I am having a hard time finding the correct adapter for it so I can plug it in to an enclosure.
did the change made it a bit faster?
is it your battery condition is good !! since some told me that using external ssd will have diff in battery draining !!
Hi Dreamland, thank you for the knowledge shared, very clearly. I have a 2017 Macbook Pro with 121 GB Flash Storage.
Can I upgrade to a 1TB SSD storage, as you have here, from the 121 GB Flash Storage ? Any advice is appreciated. Ed
Hi could you put the link of ssd, tools and adapter you used for your upgrade
Sir I have done the same thing but I have some starting troubles
Some times I am getting a no ssd error..
Are you facing the same issue please reply..

what the price of Nvme and converter?
do you have an online store link?
You can get it from Aliexpress. NFHK one is 4.39 dollar there
can you give a link to ssd
Works fine with cheap aliexpress adapter + WD SN 520 Nvme, for battery drain I recommend deep hibernation.
Can a time machine backup be used instead of a fresh install?
Where do you find if you have a 1708? My MacBook Pro is 2017 with 128 GB. Thanks
is it possible for you to post the links to the adaptor and the SSD you bought? Thank you, great video!
Check for Sabrent Nvme 2242 ssd on Amazon.com
He's wrong about the battery he unplugged the trackpad, but other than that I just swapped my storage with this and its fast and smooth. Currently on the latest update of BigSur so it is possible. What I did was clone my drive with this ssd then just replaced it to make things faster. Clone using carbon copy cloner. Use the free trial.
Is it working without any issues?
You think its worth upgrading a 256 Gb SSD for read/write speeds? I believe the 256 GB SSD is already twice as fast as the 128 GB
possible for ssd gen4??
or will there be a bottleneck?
i wanna 5000 speedrate in my 2017
Great video, i ordered the adapter but I see are not compatible with touch bar models. Will this work with Mac Book Pro 2017 15" touch bar models?
You first need to check original ssd and then decide on adapter .. I haven’t checked inside of pro 2017 15 inch model .. may be I will have look and confirm
Hi David, what adapter did you end up buying for your touchbar model?
Will the Actual apple ssd drive from macbook pro 2017 for with 2015 macbook pro?
Does the cover of the MacBook stick out with this adapter?
What is A1708? I have a 2017 Macbook Pro but don't see that anywhere. 😐
I have one last question .. sorry I'm borrowing and maybe annoying with it
I've got it now, thank you!
However, I deleted the new SSD directly in the hard disk utility on the left and then partitioned it without first "showing all devices" and then deleting and partitioning the Sabrent SSD, I hope you know what I mean. Only then did I see that the Sabrent was displayed to me and then I did the same again for the now correct SSD, everything went well, but I'm afraid that I might have "broken" something by deleting 2 media directly and reformatted ..
would that be bad? I hope I could explain the problem
I have an A1708 SSD HD from a laptop that died. Is there any recovery tool/adapter that I can use to get access to the data on the SSD?
this adapter is for A1709? The arquitech is similar.
Followed your steps same ssd same adaptor installed big sur installed ok everything works as it should apart from it wont restart i have to hold the power button to restart the MBP and i get a NO MCA ERROR REPORT.

@@DreamlandUSA Update. No issues. Sabrent 2TB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2242 is good on A1708.
@@wornclutch Great news, could you please tell me what was the interface adapter you use?. I tried NGFF interface but failed to get Sabrent 2TB recognized by my A1708.
It looks like that SSD profile is a bit thicc'r than the OEM SSD. Does the panel go on flush with this model, and what is the name of that model and where can I find it?
You need to buy NVMe M.2 NGFF SSD for 2016 2017 13" MacBook Pro A1708 Adapter c From eBay and 2242 size ssd .. that combination works perfectly.. go for Sabrent SSD
Good video. Very clear, thank you.
Hello friend, I have a doubt. Here in Brazil they are selling the adapter with an SSD model with a b + m key. Do you think this is a good deal?
Good job you done there. Significant speed increase . Can I do that to my touchbar one model 1706?
This isn’t possible on the touch at variant as the SSD is soldered to the board in those models
@@Totallyharrison Bad news. Thanks for your reply 👍
Noob over here, if I do this will I need to load a new OS to the new SSD?
Yes. But I don’t recommend this upgrade. It’ll drain your battery, even on standby
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the video, i guess we have to save everything in a external drive or stays in the system ??
Best save to external drive for easy back up. Your old drive also has your files there, and with an adaptor you can reuse that also.
I am getting an error NO MCA ERROR REPORT. when I turn it on are you guys experiencing this error? this is with the Sabrent 1t ssd
Hi. One question: You don't have now problem with battery drein in sleep mode.
Great video. Just a question, everytime I try to reinstall macOs, the laptop restart before the end and I got the question mark support page. I made sure the new ssd has the proper partition and the correct format for sierra os..
I m runnin out of ideas. Also when I try to select the start up disk I end up having no option to select, so I m trying to straight reinstall mac os on the drive without having set ip this drive as the start up. It might be the reason but then why cant I see the drive from the start up selection menue and why does it propose me my new drive when I try to reinstall macOs..
I just hate that I can’t put my machine to sleep. I have to shutdown whenever I take a break. Also I too can see that a drop in battery life. It’s probably because I told my machine to never put hard drive to sleep.
Thanks for the video! Just one question, did you have some problems with the battery drain leaving pc hibernated overnight? Or with this combo (NFHK + sabrent 1tb) everything works well? And one more question, can you turn on the pc with the power cable plugged in? thanks pls respond me.
No problem of battery drain in hibernation, everything works absolutely great and pretty satisfied with results
@@DreamlandUSA Thank you so much, I already ordered my adapter and my sabrent 1tb, so as I see in your videos, I just need to install the new adapter and new ssd and then turn macbook on go to recovery mode and start online installation right ?

H...great video. Can you tell us how is the Sabrent SSD working.....It´s working fine since you made the change? Do you have any issues?...tks
People were having issues with the systems coming out of sleep or idle. I wonder if this drive has the same issues?
would you attach the order link for require mount and ssd
just to let you know, I tried the "Sintech M.2 PCIe 3.0 NVMe 2230/2242 SSD Card Upgrade Kit" (because it came with the correct screwdrivers and two spudgers) and my computer would not recognize my hard drive... I even got a second hard drive thinking it might be that and the second one didn't work either, so it must be the adapter that's DOA... be warned... I'm returning it (Amazon) and getting the Alisko one since someone below had good results with it... I will let you know if that worked
Did it ever work?
