    The way the stand-off works is that you insert the nvme into the holder. The standoff is smaller in the middle because that part goes into the notch of your nvme. Then you use the screw and insert the screw from the bottom to hold the stand-off in place.
    Do not put the adapter in first before the nvme because the screw is on the bottom

    just remember to keep your original apple ssd, you will need it to upgrade to Monterey. The MacBook will do a firmware update in the process and will fail as it needs the original apple ssd to complete the firmware update. Once you have updated the firmware you can put the adapter back in a new upgrade to Monterey

    Evening Buddy, Great video thank you. I've just done the upgrade with the same adapter and thought the standoff was broke on mine too. I did however work out that these adapters are slightly different to usual ones. What you need to do is place the gold stand off at the end of the ssd in line with the hole and then attach the screw from BELOW the adapter to keep it in place. Obviously this can only be done whilst the adapter is out of the MacBook but hope that makes sense.

    just for Monterey be sure to upgrade once on the Apple SSD, then go back to your Sabernet and upgrade again. Monterey comes with a firmware update that detects if it's OEM ssd or not. But after the firmware is updated you can update to Monterey on your biggo ssd.
    It's the same for 2015 mbp btw ;)

    • @dhcmrlchtdj-1

    • @miared8300
      @miared8300 3 года назад +5

      @@dhcmrlchtdj-1 this has nothing to do with any backup. To install Monterey on a non-apple SSD, the Monterey has to have been installed before on the MacBook in question once (with the og apple ssd). Monterey installation updates the firmware- but it only does this when it can verify the ssd.
      So if you try to install without this step, the installation straight onto a non-apple ssd; it will just crash and reboot.

    Other comments have covered most things around the stand-off but if you use cmd-opt-r that will do internet recovery of the latest OS the Mac supports. Also when at the installation stage there is an option to use Time Machine so that is the best point to do it. Great video overall though.

    I just upgraded my 2017 MBP 13 WITH A WD SN740 NVME 512GB with this adapter and everything including sleep works great. Im getting about 2500/2300 MBps read write speeds. Which beats out a lot of the 2022 Mac base models. The whole combo cost (new parts) about $45 USD off eBay. I recommend the NFHK adapter, it works great. Just remember the gold piece is the retention mechanism that holds the SSD. The gold piece has a slot to hold the SSD in perfect position. The screw goes in from the underside of the adapter to you have to assemble the SSD/ Adapter combo first! I recommend a clean install of Mac OS Ventura for max speed. I did upgrade to Sonoma with OCLP 1.3 because I use the dictation function daily for work and I was tired of VM Windows 11. Im surprised that these 2017s do handle Sonoma quite well.

    I got the exact same setup, exact same SSD. The problem with this particular model of SSD is that it doesn’t go sleep mode making the MacBook constantly on. An issue well known from all the people who did this mod.
    So technically I just run out of battery everyday and it is a pain to turn back on because you have to go through the whole reboot system. Thinking about it, it was really fun to do that but in long term it is really annoying

  • @TheWincod75
    @TheWincod75 2 года назад +43

    Ok - Anyone who watches this and does this upgrade, don't be shocked if it does NOT go this smoothly. A few recommendations...
    1. I had to create a Mojave boot installer by formatting an existing flash drive (the adapter I bought even had a note in the packaging telling me I would have to do this.) This is due to the firmware on an older mac not being able to recognize the new NVMe firmware. Without this step, the new SSD will not be recognized. (I don't know how he got around this step). Look around youtube on how to do this, it's not too bad - it worked on the first try for me, luckily I had a spare 16gb flash drive laying around.
    2. Don't worry about installing a time machine backup onto the new SSD from recovery mode. When in recovery mode, just install the MacOS it recommends, if your boot installer doesn't automatically do this for you, and then do the OS upgrade from the desktop. After all this is working properly use migration assistant to install your time machine backup.
    3. I used an old car GPS window suction cup holder to pop the lid off my Mac, it definitely made life easier.
    4. Buy a decent tool kit, maybe like the ones from ifixit - don't limit yourself to only the T5 and P5 - I ended up also needing a small phillips head that was fortunately included in the toolkit i bought. I got mine on Amazon for $20.

    If you encounter the error message "the recovery server could not be contacted" while trying to install macOS High Sierra in recovery mode, try to shutdown your mac then hold "opt+cmd+R" instead and press the power button to get into a different macOS Recovery mode which will install macOS Ventura. It seems that Apple has shut down some of their old servers which triggers the "the recovery server could not be contacted" error message.

    I did this mod on mine a few years ago. It worked great minus upgrading the os. When there is a new major release, you have to put your old drive in and update that first. The flashing folder icon says nothing about if the Mac detects the drive or not. It actually simply means that it can’t find anything to boot from. The same flashing folder will appear without any drives installed as well.

    p5 and t5 are two types of screw driver heads, P stands for pentalobe, it's the fucking star shaped screws that apple use with 5 points that makes it inconvenient for customers to open up their own devices. On the other hand, T stands for torx, it's also star shaped, but it has 6 points, and you can use a flat head with the right size to work with torx screws.

    Followed Wincod75’s advice and used a boot installer. I advise doing this before removing the original SSD along with the usual TM back up. Once the MacBook was started up from the boot installer and the new SSD was recognised in Disk Utility I had to complete the installation (as though it was a new computer) before it could access TM. All is now going well.

    The fatter end of that standoff can be pushed into the hole on the pcb, and it should be tight enough to hold it in. I got an identical pcb last year, and that's how it worked for me. This upgrade really breathed new life into my macbook pro.
    I just ordered new keycaps and hopefully will breathe new life into that damn butterfly keyboard too. With storage and keyboard issues addressed, I think these 2016/2017 macbooks can easily hit 10 years of service without feeling obsolete.

    I bought my Mid 2017 last year this time so I could produce music better than a pc would. I was under the assumption that my 256gb was as large as it could achieve. I can't wait to upgrade the ssd. It does have only 8gb of ram though. too bad that is not a doable option. a new logic board with 16gb of ram installed is $450 and the ssd kit is another $150 totaling $600. I might look around for another used MacBook Pro for that price point and skip the upgrades. Or just do it all. lol

    While it is cool that the non-Touchbar 2017 MacBook pros have upgradable storage, the last “true” upgradable MacBook Pro is the late 2011 model imo, as it’s the last one where the stuff that can be upgraded uses industry standard connections, like SATA. You can also put in a drive doubler to replace the optical drive with a second HDD or SSD, replace the wifi card with one from a 2012 model to get Bluetooth 4.0, it has upgradable RAM, and is the last MacBook to have an expresscard 34 slot.

    • @nep-nep6575
      @nep-nep6575 Год назад

      @TechSpec814 good point, I forgot that the mid-2012 model was similar to the 2011 version. The late 2012 retina one is where they switched from SATA for their drives to a “Sorta NVMe but not NVMe” SSD and soldered the Ram to the board.
