We had rocks. We made them pointy so that we could stab things.
We put the pointy on a stick to make it longer so that we could stab things without getting stabbed back some of the time.
We then realised we could throw the pointy stick to stab things much further away.
We then realised we could use bendy sticks to throw our pointy sticks even further. Thus emerged the bow.
This worked for a long time, until we realised that we could set fire to some stuff which would throw our pointy sticks so fast, we didn't even need the stick bit anymore. Our weapon of choice is now just the pointy, aka bullet.

I started self training in my interpretation of French Canne fighting in about 1990. In around 2000 I began to incorporate longsword techniques as I interpreted them. Now at 48 with bad knees & needing a stick to aid in walking I carry a custom hickory walking stick, rectangular in cross section. I have had it since 2001 or 2002. It was accidentally dropped 6 1/2 stories down an elevator shaft 2 1/2 years ago & only got 1 scratch & some scuffing.
I would certainly trust it with my life & feel confident enough 8n using it!
My previous stick I carried while walking in high school was much lighter. It literally saved my life when a guy came out of the shadows & tried to pull a large knife on me. It has a chunk out of it where I blocked the blade. He turned to run off when I hit him 8n the head after blocking his knife. Unfortunately despite me hitting the man in the back of head several times he got away so no arrest possible. But it's for that sticks inability to stop him that my current stick is much stouter. It is still light & nimble enough, just hits a lot harder. I accidentally knocked a friend unconscious with it when doing drills because my friend did not do what he was supposed to do in the drill. He was supposed to parry my attack g counter; instead he leaned in & tried to strike. I unfortunately connected with the side of his head. This was in the early 2000s & in the early days of what we now call HEMA before good safety equipment was around...so it shows why safety is important.

Take it one further, to an item you mentioned in this: Canes. The benefit of a stick, enhanced according to your tastes. Some canes are akin to small-head maces, some are hooked- you can even get ones that act as a stun-stick (Though that one would likely be IDd as a weapon easily.)
But they serve another benefit, too: Appearance. Most people have 0 reason to carry a stick around, but a cane? Many people need canes, so as long as you can justify it you can take it anywhere and nobody would bat an eye. At most people who know you, and then you can just say it's to give you something to lean on when you tire.

Used to study escrima. Dual wielding these sticks felt fantastic for crowd control. Leads me to my story.
Got set up in a multi-man melee during sparring. One of my “rechambering” motions would sling the stick over my shoulder and across my back. At one point when I did that, one of my opponents was cheekily creeping up behind me to whack me while two other fellows were distracting me from the front.
Their strike got BLOCKED because my stick had rechambered, guarding my back from the sneak attack right as they attempted to attack me. To them, it had looked like I had psychic powers.
But to be honest, I couldn’t tell which of us was more surprised that I’d blocked that. 😂 I had just been following my form.
Stick fighting is great. Definitely recommend.

My preferred method of stick fighting is when the stick is a sabot and it's coming from an Abrams cannon. Alternatively if I must be reduced to basics; I will take a claymore; it's still technically a stick; Just a very fancy stick

My go-to is a flash light, but usually a small one thats slightly bigger than my palm but not too thick. With a bit of background in boxing and bareknuckle, I like to use it as a blinding tool; and also can clutch it in my hand to deliver harder hammerfists.

Killing or even serious wounds could result in you seeing jail time, even if they were the aggressor. So, non lethal self defence is often the better option, unless you truly fear for your own life.

You can tell I not only watch IcyMike but also that I practice Kobudō. My answer was:
    - custom self defense tactical flashlight that fits almost entirely in your palm
    - 1000 lumens
    - high throw
    - jagged edge on the emissive side
    - custom grip that serves as tekko (old brass knuckles). It would like a small version of lantern light (bigass carrying handle)
That way you could box with it like brass knuckles (without the uncomfortable knuckle/finger separation), hammerfist with the jagged end, and flash people in the eyes with a powerful light to temporarily blind them and force them to retreat a bit.
I had one custom made and I carry it everywhere. Small, effective, and easy to explain to people as the “handle” makes it versatile as a light anyway.
Stick is a great one though. Easy to get your hands on. Still think that Shane Fazen’s retractable tonfa is top 3 best self defense tools for modern day.

Big Stick Energy detected. Opinion approved.
On a more serious note, other massive advantages of sticks is that they are basically unregulated in that you can take them absolutely anywhere and no authority can take them from you, and if your stick is big enough to be a cane, you don’t need to conceal carry. You can walk around with it in your hands and thus you don’t need to draw it.

I once had a stick the size of an entire playground, I named him Chad ThunderStick… it was incredible. I even took the bark off by hand, making it nice and smooth. But sadly, my dad broke the stick, not knowing it’s importance to me. I don’t blame him though. He was just cleaning the yard, found it behind the trees I kept it behind, and broke it. Dude didn’t know any better. I was surprised that he was even able to brake it, the thing was think, sturdy, and huge.
This story has a happy ending though, when I came home from a walk, I saw the pile of sticks in front of the house, and saw Chad ThunderStick was in that pile… But, it was broken in the best way possible, it was snapped into three, Staff sized pieces. So really, it was kind of a good thing. Instead of one, massive stick, I now had three, normal sized sticks, perfect for walking with! But I still wish I had the original; thing was hilarious.
I named the three parts, Chad, Thunder, and Stick. Thunder’s the top of the stick, it’s the thinnest one, so it’s the fastest one to swing around. The middle part’s called Chad. It’s middle of the road one, for lack of a better term. Not to heavy, but not to light. Then there’s the bottom part, Stick. It’s the heaviest, and longest part, making it the most weapon like of the three. So it’s the funniest.
My dad apologized for breaking the stick when I told him about it. I wasn’t mad at all, I honestly found it funny, but I was lowkey bummed out a bit. He told me he was real confused when he just saw this stick behind his trees, that were bigger then the trees themselves lol.
So now, the three sticks, Thunder, Chad, and Stick. All live hidden safely in a 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙩 place. Always ready for the time I need something to lean on.
And that’s the legend, of Chad ThunderStick.
