Yes...he was so right to play the outro solo for her! That solo is iconic....It is a trademark solo for Mark Knopfler....As a guitar player I have to hear it .... I've spent hours trying to learn it

This song will always be one of my favorite songs not just because it’s an awesome song, but because I have very specific memory and feelings from my teenage years. I was at a friends house one summer evening and it was perfect weather, perfect temperature, nice breeze, his pool water was perfect, and not a care in the world. His mother and father were blasting some pretty cool tunes and this is one of them. And for some reason for the 3 1/2, four minutes that this song was on, everything just seemed right in the world. When I don’t hear this song for a while, and I hear again, it brings me back to those times.
this song and album were known to me and my group of 19/20 year olds as the " Sunday morning after a banger Saturday nigh" music. The music scene was ripe with amazing original stuff, so we didnt see the iconic nature until later in life. It truly is a song that places you within great memories. The Alchemy version may be the best version.
Glad Alexis was watching with someone that knew the song so she didn't miss out on that solo at the end.

This song is brilliant. No other song contains so much tension and simple grooves at the same time. It works on so many levels. The bass line comes out of the floor an carries all the of Mark Knofler's unpredictable, yet totally predictable arpeggio and cathartic soloing. No other song or band can walk that line the way Dire Straits does. I never turn this song off if it comes across the radio or stream I'm listening to. Amazing song from start to finish.

So, I was born in El Salvador in 75, moved to Canada in 1990 when I was 14 , started immersing myself in English music, I did know about dire straits because of money for nothing, but when I stumbled upon sultans of swing I was just blown away and went to research it and found out how it was inspired by watching what I gather might have been a jazz band
The solo in this song is one of the most recognizable riffs ever in rock, so I'm glad you added the rest at the end. I remember when the computer animation that MTV used for VJ Max Headroom and that the Dire Straits used in the Money For Nothing video was considered very high tech and cutting edge at the time. Money For Nothing would be a good song for Alexis to hear more of Knopfler singing, along with Sting. 🙏✌️

LMBO!! I knew from the intro that Burch was going to find some way to finish off the song. And Burch, you were absolutely right to do so.
The most amazing thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to a level most right-handed players can only dream of attaining. His lyrics show that he used to be a journalist before going pro.
Oh wow! I had not known that! 🤯 I tried to play lefthanded on a friend's brandnew lefty guitar recently but was completely useless at it 😅
A lot players are closet lefties. They use their lefthand for speed and/or bend control (Clapton, Gilmour, Page, Duane Allman, Rik Emmett, Joe Perry, and I think EVH and Jeff Beck.
Source: I am a leftie who prefers to work the frets with my left fingers but strum with my right hand. I watched an interview recently with Rik Emmett talking about how his guitar teacher had him play this way after learning to play "backwards," and had him relearn to play "the normal way."
Actually both Allman Brothers were lefties who played right-handed.
@@alanlucas2479 Elvis Costello, Johnny Winters, Gary Moore, and Billy Corgan are lefies who play right-haned but Jeff Beck was a rightie as is Clapton. I'm a right playing leftie too. 😁 Still from the older generations it's hard to tell who was born left-handed but forced in school to start using their right-hand. I know my dad was, personally I got hit on the knuckles with a ruler in school once for using my left hand to write. Only once though as I handed the teacher back 2 half rulers.
Mark Knopfler is a certified genius so it doesn't surprise me.
Not only that, He uses his fingers instead of a pick; He learn how to play the guitar with an acoustic one because He couldn't afford an electric one at that time!.
Phenomenal musician. Mark Knoffler is the most unique melody maker. His chord progressions are mind blowing. His ability to accent his voicings is unmatched. FYI you two have become an addiction to watch. Thank u both so much
A friend of mine saw them in concert in 91 and said they put on one of the best concerts next to Floyd he saw, it was I think The Brothers in Arms tour if I'm not mistaken.

@laetitiavenant5423 tu as raison. C'était "On Every Street", et j'y suis allé deux fois ici à Barcelone, en mai et en septembre. Ils ont fait CINQ concerts (ou six): en ce temps-là, sans internet, seulement vente de billets "physiques", ils ont vendu (sept mois à l'avance, en octobre) le 1er concert à "La Monumental" en une heure et demie, le deuxième l'après-midi, le troisième (et je ne me souviens pas si un quatrième sussi) le l'endemain. Puis ils on dû partir, mais a la fin du tour ils sont revenus en Barcelone pour y jouer encore deux concerts de plus au Palau Sant Jordi.

I like how in one interview Mark said he doesn't think he's a good singer, so he let his guitar sing like 50% of the time .

and it was their debut album too. That's why they were so slim - boys were really putting everything into music and had scarcely any money for food. Just look at the several years' difference in the video for money for nothing, when they'd eaten enough.

The bass player, John Illsley, owns a local pub to me down here in Hampshire UK and lives the quiet life. Gets asked "when are you getting back together?"regularly. Serious money has been offered but the answer is always "Maybe one day...". Ain't going to happen though. 😄

Best band in the world. I first heard them when I was working in the USA late 70's, blew me away. Came home to the UK bursting to tell about them only to find they'd just broken out here. Loved them since.
Guitar George is the older brother of Angus and Malcolm Young from AC/DC. Harry is Harry Vanda, George's band mate.

Mark is a great guitarist. Recognized by other professional guitarists and a unique sound with his finger picking.
Knophler and Buckingham are both very famous finger style pickers in Rock which makes both difficult for others to duplicate.

Mark Knopfler is my girls favorite. We saw him at Berkeley 3 years ago. He asked the crowd what they thought about him retiring and everyone yelled NOOOOO!!! He laughed and said come on. Then played an amazing concert. Wasn’t a big fan till that concert.
I grew up listening to this and many more from Mark Knopfler. Took me right back to those cassette tape days when I'd rewind and play that again and again. Every chord, every nuance of that song is deeply familiar to me. Top shelf stuff.

I must have listened to this song hundreds of times.
I saw Dire Straits in Germany in 1980 after the Making Movies album had been released. They were immense. My brother, however, saw them in the 70s in a pub called the Greyhound in Fulham, London.

mark knopfler is one of the all time great guitarists, up there with australians tommy emmanuel and ian moss, if you haven't heard them try classical gas by tommy, and bow river by cold chisel, live from the ringside tour, the band ian was in

Dire Straits is a very cool pick. The rhythmic timing and laid back vocals of Mark Knophler are always a welcome mesh of music and storytelling. I'd love to see you guys react to STAKEAWAY and INDUSTRIAL DISEASE. Because they rarely unearthed on these channels. They are brilliant, cool, jazzy, and well played. Mark Knophler worked at a newspaper earlier in his life, which explains how he writes the songs from the viewpoint of a reporter. We know eventually that MONEY FOR NOTHING will make an appearance on the channel. I will be interested in Alexis' take on the early use of computer graphics. Until then, enjoy

The first time l heard this song, it immediately caught my attention, back in the 70's. I was listening intently to it, not knowing who it was and thought,."Hmmm, this is a different style for Bob Dylan, who l thought at first was singing this.
Mark wrote some great music and his playing style was unique.
Catch The Every Brothers cover of their song 'Why Worry', that is live, where Mark and Chet Atkins share the guitar intro. It's absolutely spot on. And with the Everly Brothers haunting harmonies, it is beautiful.

When I reached drinking age, this song was hot. For years I never had seen him play. Then, I saw him and his finger-style ways. Wild. Him and Derek Trucks. Blows my mind.
I love to see young people being turned on to great music. Enjoy. I saw them live in the early 80s the best live band I ever saw.
It's interesting the way that Mark uses his voice and the picking guitar ! Like dialogue, he speaks and after the guitar is answering doing this like an inter-dialogue because he answering himself but the guitar take an important place in the dialogue when realize the solos specialize en the interludio, there's no any doubt that this is one of the most iconic melodies of the 80's times!

Like "Sultans of Swing," Knopfler's experience in an appliance store In the U.S. was the basis of the lyrics to "Money for Nothing." He overheard some workers setting up store displays and moving merchandise around talking about the videos that were being played on MTV at the time and one stated the artists were getting "Money for nothing" and the rest, as they say, is history.
That's why I always listen to the album cut.

Most people only hear the guitar playing etc and dont really get the words.But the words are very sad and poignient. Its about the end of an era. It means a lot to English people of my generation. I went in so many pubs like this in the 60s and 70s .I am 77.

Thanks for finding the end of the song. If I remember correctly back in 1984 when MTV started the first song was Money for Nothing by Dire Straits.
The first video on MTV was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles, on August 1, 1981.
Money For Nothing was released in 1985.
