      Agreed...kind of like in the middle east where they are trying to out do every city and country. There is no reason some of the middle eastern cities need the world's tallest or biggest for any other reason than to put themselves on the map as mentioned...tourism or even pride. Dubai loves to out do everyone. World's tallest, fountains in Vegas..now Dubai has the exact same fountains only bigger, ferriswheel the biggest ( even though it doesn't work) Vegas Sphere...Dubai is now planning a bigger one...and on and on.

      Expensive land doesn’t stop people from building single story ranch houses. Land cost is by no means the only factor in building tall buildings.

    • @Donovan_Williams
      @Donovan_Williams 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@rpvitiello As you go up, it gets exponentially more expensive because of elevators, service pipes, engineering etc. - not only do they take up space to access the higher flloors - space for which there is no economic return - but they have to be reinforced. You could probably build 3-4 50 story buildings for the cost of a single 100 story building. This one is going to be about 50% taller than the World Trade Center, each tower of which had 110 floors, so you are talking about 150+ floors!
      There is a reason why most of the buildings in Manhattan and other cities top out around 50 ish floors.

    It would be interesting to see if OKC could turn this into either an MLB expansion site or relocation site. That's basically what you want for an MLB development. A whole bunch of young professionals in condos or apartments all around the stadium. People with disposable income who can live, work, play (nightlife) and go to as many games as they want without ever having to get in a car. In theory a development that includes the tallest building in the country could pretty easily accommodate that. Especially if they are going to have MLS and NBA already there. It's definitely going to have thousands of sports fans with disposable income living right next to the stadium. That's pretty much best case scenario for any sports franchise to be successful and have money to spend on players.

    • @mcgough52
      @mcgough52 6 месяцев назад +7

      Exactly. At 1500 feet the winds were well beyond 300mph in that storm. I would imagine that there would be hardened concrete storm shelters located in the core of the building. But can a structure that height withstand the wind forces of 300mph? Even 200mph? Not sure. Would love to hear a structural engineer weight in.

  • @BrianHeck-b2g
    @BrianHeck-b2g 6 месяцев назад +7

    Ok, live in OKC, and I keep seeing some of the same questions, so i'll drop some thoughts and info.
    1. I think this will be built, but I don't think as they begin it will be near as tall as they want. OKC is growing, but not that fast and that much, and people tend to move here because of the cheaper land and cheaper large houses, not to go to a skyscraper in the city.
    2. Tornados: yes it's tornado alley, and yes we have big ones, but they tend not to hit the OKC metro due to the usually 3-5 degrees hotter it is in the metro vs the countryside (which isn't conducive to the bigger storms, you get above about 87 degrees or so and you see less tornado's particularly large ones). so storms tend to "slide" around the metro or take out one of the suburbs, particularly Moore. Not saying it couldn't happen, but it isn't as likely as you think, and engineers no what they are doing.
    3. This is a California Developer, not a local OK one. Perhaps they are correct in their projections, but I think as they start to build this they will realize the demand and need just isn't there and this will be scaled back. But who knows.
    4. Conspiracy Time!!!! I suppose if we get the tin hat brigade to chime in, it could be a move to one of these 15 min city concepts that's being tossed around for the future for "sustainability" and "control of populations"? Or maybe because "THEY" (whoever they is) know the coasts are going to be wiped out in climate crisis, war, alien attack, etc, and so they are preparing housing in the middle of the country LOL. ok that's far fetched to say the least, but someone is going to say it eventually.
    Anyway, I think a smaller version of this is built, maybe topping out at 1200 to 1400 feet max. Just my .02.

    NBA Allstar Game is what their working on getting. The Thunder owners tried to bring it to OKC but, not enough hotels. There isn`t enough hotels in the metro to cover that. Even OKANA Indoor Water Park and Resort with the 404 room hotel is already being booked and it`s halfway to completion. American Heartland Theme Park and Resort and Three Ponies RV and Campground is under construction and it too is already being booked. AO and the rest of the team have being doing their homework about the city and the metro. Matteson has already stated that the city and metro needs another 3,000 hotel rooms. Will Rogers World Airport has been more busier than before 2019 and it too is getting an expansion, if it hasn`t already done so. OKC pop is over 700,000, the OKC metro is almost at 1.5 million and the state is almost at 4.1 million and they said there`s no signs of slowing down. I cannot see the OKC City counsel turning this height variance down come April.
    Edit : The state has already ended the grocery tax will take place in August.

    Not sure I'd call the soccer field an MLS stadium. The Oklahoma Energy are a development league team and the new stadium will only be 8,000 seats. Compare that with the new stadium being built in Indy that will seat 20,000. If you are going to build a soccer stadium downtown, go big or go home. 8,000 seats guarantees you will never make it to the big leagues in soccer.

The Downtowns of Atlanta, Fort Worth, Nashville, Miami, and Salt Lake City have all had tornadoes hit their skyscrapers within the last 25 years and downtown OKC has no more or less of a chance to face the same fate.
