To quote Alex at around 10.53 "We have actually had a lot of feedback that people would like to see more plane content and less multi-rotor content." Yes, and amen.
i would just like to thank josh for sharing his story of starting out with his father and then they shared with us their flying experience with eachother... very touching. my heart is genuinely moved.
Damn this is the episode I needed to see right now. A bit longer, slower paced, relaxing, gorgeous to watch, people enjoying themselves and having fun... darn near the perfect Flite Test episode. Congratulations! (I think I want a Radian XL, too)
I got the XL for sheer altitude. On my second measured flight, at 47°F and no thermals, it got to 3,026 feet just on the battery then floated down from there. I wonder how high anyone else has measured in altitude.
Another flight test on a plane but 90% of the conversation was about quads......if I want to see and hear about quads I'll click on a vid about them.....when I see a review/flight test on a plane (the Radian XL in this case) I expect the vid/conversation to be about the plane. I think you should change your channel to called FPV/quads chasing rc planes.
Why is this video named "Radian XL" ? I've watched for about 15 minutes but most of it was multirotor talk with little to no info on the glider. How about making a 10 minute video with actual usefull info on the Radian?
I absolutely agree. FT have, I am sorry to say, deteriorated into puerile idiocy. The good news is that other people have stepped up... Motion RC, RCInformer, even Chuck T Seeker, and several others, are all doing excellent real reviews. I've more or less stopped bothering with FT, they seem to be a lost cause. Very sad really, 'losing' Chad Kapper and David Winderstal signalled the proverbial 'death knell' imho.
Yeah. i love flite test but this video was rubbish. Josh hardly mentioned how it flew or anything about the plane. it was just about chasing planes and multi rotors. most f the 2nd half was just alex telling josh how to follow him. I used to love watching flite test, but this video was really a big let down.
Off all the Radian XL reviews I have watched, and I have watched several, this gave me the best idea of what real flying experience would be like if I had it. No other review has such long, up close in flight shots, really helpful with gliders. Assembly was there, comparison to other radians was there I'm not sure what was missing. Additional slow shooting info on the quads was also totally related to gliders, I liked the recommendations on chasing slow aircrafts like gliders.
I've no idea why E-flite included AS3X stabilisation. A powered glider of this size, and with the dihedral wing will be stable in the air anyway. Its also worth noting that the stabilisation should be turned off to dial it in properly. Part of the fun with gliders is feeling the effects of thermals and the wind which stabilisation will largely negate. The only time I've used stabilisation is in some of my FPV planes when I need to take a break to adjust something or maybe want to look around with the camera. But then the stabilisation system will also include GPS and RTH functionality.
Hi Josh, There have been some wide spread reports of a problem with the tail on the Radian XL. The tech support guy I called at Horizon said the reason the Towers orders are not shipping (I ordered one) yet is because they are trying to fix the problem. Its odd that you did not have that problem but I'm glad you enjoyed your Radian XL. It looks like you had a nice flight with the Radian XL anyway. Ron
In my opinion a 5" mini quad running triblades and with an AUW with a gopro around 550g is the sweet spot, 2300-2500kv motors gives good power and the triblades bite the air and have much more power. The weight is also enough to keep the quads momentum going when flipping over something. 6" is more for long range tracks such as the WDP where most people flew 6" quads. Just my thoughts :)
I would like to see a lego plane. Start with building the plane completely out of lego and see what it would take to make it fly reliably while trying to keep as much of the plane made of lego.
Hey Flite Test, I have a challenge for you. I want you to fly a non-3D racing quad consistently inverted. Here is how. Have you ever noticed when flying your quads that when you are flying at high speeds, the props tend to act like wings? What I mean is that when you pitch up, the quad will naturally go up, and when you pitch down, the quad will want to go down, just like a plane. So I was thinking, if you could get the quad to go fast enough, could you get it to fly inverted like a plane, with the lift generated by the props cancelling out the prop's downward thrust, thus making the quad flyable inverted? I would love to see you try that. Just be prepared to lose 1 or 2 quads.
Mackenzie Clarke What could work is if your AOA is high enough the engines would produce more forward thrust than downward and that additional forward speed would add more lift.
Mackenzie Clarke Hmm I guess but I think it would be fun for them to try and a good way to put their quads to the test. They are called Flite Test for a reason.
To fix that wing id use some foam putty. When I found out about that stuff it changed the whole game of repairing. Woodland Scenics I think is the brand
You need to come out to a DLG contest or ALES contest. You'll see some awesome competitive glider action. Super challenging, super fun, great camaraderie. The RXL might actually be pretty competitive in an ALES contest. You just need to add some flaps for the landings.
when using the fat shark goggles how does one that wears glasses know what adapter lens to use? ( -2...-4...-6 ) Do they just have a kit with all the adapters in it?
May be a stupid question, but I'm curious. What can you do with a shredded foam wing like that. Attempt a patch up somehow?, replace the part (do they exist and are they expensive)?, or live with it?
Hi any chance you could give me sum measurement of the height and width of the fusalarge at its widest point and highest point I won't to build a box to slide it before I buy one from NZ
Those spoilers are far too small for that size glider. For flat fields they're ok, but if you fly where there are slopes everywhere then it's next to impossible to get the thing down.
I agree, but I sold my normal Radian because I found not having ailerons just too annoying. I would have thought that with the absence of ailerons they are pretty much exclusively intended for flat field thermalling and should never be taken near a slope of any kind.
josh could you please help me out answering a few questions i have not been able to find the answers anywhere online, even in person at my local hobby shops.. but my question is what is the differences between the radian, the radian pro, radian XL, and finally the radian FT edition? besides the lighting, does the flite test edition radian have the same features? what is the main differences between the radian FT, radian pro, and radian XL, are these all 4 or more channel? my umx radian finally crapped out and i want to upgrade i love the flite test edition but i also like all of those features that the pro has!! what would you recommend for the best radian edition glider? what would you recommend for the best glider with the best features, and if you wouldnt mind helping me understand the differences between all of these radian varients?? thanks soo much in advance, and hope you are safe and healthy! god speed, ill be patiently waiting on my end, thanks in advance for sharing some knowledge!! have a great day, -p3t3r
I have a question what flight controllers do you use for your fpv quads because I have a cc3d and I don't have much control and I just put all my fpv gear into mine and also what goggle do you like better? Dominator v3 or hd2
Great LOS foam glider... but my view on size has changed as for FPV there's no need for that much weight and reducing it reduces cost to pay for the FPV cam and VTX where FPV is becoming the least expensive way to fly as the difference in cost of just 2 large batteries needed will pay for a small cam & VTX. Smaller FPV equipment with everything integrated is needed and where the market is headed as energy follows the path of least resistance to cater to the demand of America's greater ingenuity. But the FAA really needs to wake up and treat RC like it does full scale aircraft to gain respect and compliance by establishing classes of "non-drone" aircraft where the weight limit on a slow flying foam glider with it's mass spread out is not in the same class as a carbon fiber quad that has its incredibly strong mass density condensed. You could not hurt someone beating them with a large foam glider like the Radian XL but a small dense object made of carbon fiber will hurt if it hits you at high speed. Bullets are not "drones" and they are tiny but they pack a punch showing what I mean
im the opposite, i didnt like the lack of control from 3ch radians . . . so went with the radian pro and i love it, had it 4 years now by far my favourite plane in the fleet, glider and stunt plane in 1 haha
what would be a good plane getting in to flight i want something fast as i feel capable to fly something and make quick adjustments i also want something with multiple options for more c=hannels if i want them there but i dont much care for fpv and i would like the option for slow gliding if possible and i have a 200$ budget anyhing i could get that is rtf
Hey flitetest I've been watching you for a while and I just now want to get into flying planes, can you recommend a good starter plane that can take a few crashes?
I love big gliders and following up from your Bird of Time video, I now have one and it's great...At about 11:00??? you said about people requesting more plane content....I'd love to see how you got on with a Durafly Hyperbipe... not a very new plane but I don't think you've done much with planes like that???Anyway, another great video guys!
peter blew it up. literally, with explosives. in his defense, he was trying to make a rocket engine, but it was more like a very large firecracker. carnage worthy of the RCgutt channel.
Could you please do a build Video on a bigger "tiny Loop" with better range and better camera and better battery and better everything? That´d be niceeee
David with his tricopter filmed it better then the 250 quads. Show just starting fill like its going down hill now. Reviews are not as good now then before.
You put the wing insert in wrong, the small plastic piece doesnt connect outside the wind, there is a slot inside the wing where you can put the small plastic piece. AND YES more plane content, GLIDERS. ALSO: Flight Controllers and FPV
To quote Alex at around 10.53 "We have actually had a lot of feedback that people would like to see more plane content and less multi-rotor content." Yes, and amen.
And then they spend the majority of the video discussing FPV filming techniques with a quad.
I would rather see more multi-rotor than plane. everyone's different.
I vote more planes. To be honest, this multi rotor stuff is boring.
That's just me though. Not hating on them.
He needs to stick some googly-eyes on the front of the goggle thingy.
Didn't think I'd see you here!!!!!
In front of the fpv goggles, good idea!
How did you end up here?
you should do a collaboration to see how long it takes to shoot it out if the sky. :p

i would just like to thank josh for sharing his story of starting out with his father and then they shared with us their flying experience with eachother... very touching. my heart is genuinely moved.
We learned to fly on large gliders. There is just something awesome about staying in the air so high and so long. Awesome quad flying Josh!
+BigFatHaggis Just in case you think the Radiam XL is big. I just finished a 12' version of the Kraken flying wing.
+BigFatHaggis Just in case you think the Radiam XL is big. I just finished a 12' version of the Kraken flying wing.
Im so sad that the plane is discontinued. My propeller flew off mid flight and it took hours trying to find the replacement parts from resellers.
Damn this is the episode I needed to see right now. A bit longer, slower paced, relaxing, gorgeous to watch, people enjoying themselves and having fun... darn near the perfect Flite Test episode. Congratulations!
(I think I want a Radian XL, too)
Flitetest, you guys did a AWESOME job at flitefest can't wait until next year. Had a great time.
Always wanted to try out a nice big glider. Seems like a nice relaxing way to fly.
I got the XL for sheer altitude. On my second measured flight, at 47°F and no thermals, it got to 3,026 feet just on the battery then floated down from there. I wonder how high anyone else has measured in altitude.
3000 FEET!?!? Holy crap.... did you have a camera on it or did you just do that VLOS?
Another flight test on a plane but 90% of the conversation was about quads......if I want to see and hear about quads I'll click on a vid about them.....when I see a review/flight test on a plane (the Radian XL in this case) I expect the vid/conversation to be about the plane.

I agree. They should have named it Alex droning about drones. I was looking forward to a review of the radian xl.
radian looks way better than drone
Off all the Radian XL reviews I have watched, and I have watched several, this gave me the best idea of what real flying experience would be like if I had it. You are right, the only thing I can see a glider like this could need a stabilisation system for is the Home Sweet Home button.
The radian has been my favorite plane to follow so far....and wreck into...
The new radian XL is awesome, I love how you guys crash into everything.
Please do more plane reviews,
well i was expecting a review of the XL , but not as target plane simply for quads to follow
Hi Josh,

I bought one and it is.....one of the most beautiful rc planes on the market. I am 62 and have been flying for 20 years.
This has an amazing thumbnail.
It's good to see you guys switching it up with josh chasing the plane! That 210 looks sweet!
we need the sweed to test this out
Cant say that I am a fan of quad shots, especially when it becomes more about the quad and not its subject .
Love just watching it fly. I have the old radian and would love to upgrade to this one with fpv.
I would like to see a lego plane. Start with building the plane completely out of lego and see what it would take to make it fly reliably while trying to keep as much of the plane made of lego.
They could do anything bc they are RC Gods
That looks like you are all having great fun and I like the sun set shots
Hey Flite Test, I have a challenge for you.
I want you to fly a non-3D racing quad consistently inverted. Here is how.
Have you ever noticed when flying your quads that when you are flying at high speeds, the props tend to act like wings? What I mean is that when you pitch up, the quad will naturally go up, and when you pitch down, the quad will want to go down, just like a plane.

I would love to see you try that. Just be prepared to lose 1 or 2 quads.
sounds legit...they should try that
I doubt that would work but you would have to cut the throttle when it would be inverted so it doesn't fly right into the ground
Mackenzie Clarke
What could work is if your AOA is high enough the engines would produce more forward thrust than downward and that additional forward speed would add more lift.
+NJ Sullyalex then that wouldn't be inverted
Mackenzie Clarke
Hmm I guess but I think it would be fun for them to try and a good way to put their quads to the test. They are called Flite Test for a reason.
please keep the multirotor content there are still people that want to see it
awesome footage and such a relaxing edit with a good choice of background music and talking, enjoy your vids, guys. they always have a good vibe

Those high speed passes were cool, now time to make a Radian Racer!
You guys really need to get some good drone shots of the horizon and sunset because that looked amazing in that location
when using the fat shark goggles how does one that wears glasses know what adapter lens to use? ( -2...-4...-6 ) Do they just have a kit with all the adapters in it?
I really like the airbrakes but i dont understand why they didnt givet it ailerons. The tails seems a little flimsy but its great to see a big glider.
May be a stupid question, but I'm curious. What can you do with a shredded foam wing like that. Attempt a patch up somehow?, replace the part (do they exist and are they expensive)?, or live with it?
y'all have more fun than should be allowed, keep up the good work!
Hi any chance you could give me sum measurement of the height and width of the fusalarge at its widest point and highest point I won't to build a box to slide it before I buy one from NZ
How about trying to land on the Radian XL in flight?
Would it be possible to chase the plane with one of the newer Phantom models, with its "chase mode"?
This is a lovely plane, quite tempted to get one, it looked quite a windy day, how did she handle with the high blustery wind?
Those spoilers are far too small for that size glider. For flat fields they're ok, but if you fly where there are slopes everywhere then it's next to impossible to get the thing down.

Loved the review! Is it possible to put an HD camera on the Radian?
josh could you please help me out answering a few questions i have not been able to find the answers anywhere online, even in person at my local hobby shops..
but my question is what is the differences between the radian, the radian pro, radian XL, and finally the radian FT edition?

I'm in the Philippines it seems that the most plentiful foam board is pvc expanded foam board. Can this be used for making planes?
How did it ended up with the versacopter?
Great video guys, really good piloting as well
What range would you get with a spektrum radio like them?
good memories, the original radian was my first rc plane, flown it atleast 200+ hours :)
What are the quadcopters you guys are using to chase the planes?
tabs are supposed to go inside the wing. hope you figured that out already:D
So better build quality than the Radian Pro? I love the spoilers, but I would have loved ailerons and maybe less dihedral in that case.
What kind of battery did you use for the plane in this vid?
i need to rethink my delve into RC air after watching these videos.
just kidding guys.
you did well.
Flying quads by time is kind of nuts. Making a cheap current sensor is quick and easy. Don't leave ground without it. :)
Would a 1300 mah lipo battery be to light in the radian 2.6??
awesome!
the only thing i miss is a stall test
im the opposite, i didnt like the lack of control from 3ch radians . . . so went with the radian pro and i love it, had it 4 years now by far my favourite plane in the fleet, glider and stunt plane in 1 haha
wow that tail flexes quite noticeably

The wing connectors are supposed to be on the inside of the airplane not on the outside where are the two screws connect.
Cheers guys had no idea power gliders existed we used to tow homemade balsawood non RC behind my old foam stealth bomber
could you guys do the mini apprentice, haven't found a really good review yet
wondering about how much damage in the versacopter
Great video guys!
Those small plastic wing connectors are meant to go inside the wing, so they cannot be seen.
what type channel reciver should i use
Can you guys review the timber next???
I have a question: Is it possible to have a 3D 5.8 ghz fpv Setup? So that you basically have 2 cams on the plane... Would be very cool :D
good review. love the fixed wings. love to see more fpv fixed wing !
Hey flitetest I've been watching you for a while and I just now want to get into flying planes, can you recommend a good starter plane that can take a few crashes?
When will your next periscope be?
I love big gliders and following up from your Bird of Time video, I now have one and it's great...At about 11:00??? you said about people requesting more plane content....I'd love to see how you got on with a Durafly Hyperbipe... not a very new plane but I don't think you've done much with planes like that???Anyway, another great video guys!
Please make an updated Naze32 board setup video. Thanks
Would the radian XL be good for beginners
Can you "fly" between my "tail section" and the "wing"?
Would you recommend this for a beginner?
What battery did you use in this?
Awesome video of the Radian XL. Where can it be ordered from? Thanks for the great video.
i know this isnt related to the video but for professional use(HGTV, etc) what do they use to record drone footage?
The air to air footage is usually from GoPro's. They use smaller action cams like the Moebius or the RunCam for footage on the plane for more footage.
Do some formation flying with 2 XL radians please.
When did Mario Batali start flying FPV with you guys?
The Radian Pro was my first plane.
Ok, Title is "Radian XL Flight Test"....not FPV quad vid....what does that suggest???
What Happend to the SHINDIN?
peter blew it up. literally, with explosives. in his defense, he was trying to make a rocket engine, but it was more like a very large firecracker. carnage worthy of the RCgutt channel.
Saw it but that episode they said a few months but that was a little less than a year and a half ago.
Could you please do a build Video on a bigger "tiny Loop" with better range and better camera and better battery and better everything? That´d be niceeee
might have to get one of these, something a bit different than my warbirds.
flite test can you make a p38 foamy?
j bix needs to do more chasing! do accidental loops over everything!
Nice sailplane!
Plz do a review on the Eflite Rare Bear! Good episode again!
David with his tricopter filmed it better then the 250 quads. Show just starting fill like its going down hill now. Reviews are not as good now then before.
@13:10, Josh: You never get good footage of me....,sec's later, Best move ever! :P Epic!!
You put the wing insert in wrong, the small plastic piece doesnt connect outside the wind, there is a slot inside the wing where you can put the small plastic piece. AND YES more plane content, GLIDERS. ALSO: Flight Controllers and FPV
id like to try these wings on the FPV Raptor
You should do a vertical take-off plane
You know the tab joiners go inside the wing not on the outside.
Hey guys.....can you make a sail plane that only runs on solar panels?
Do you really want AS3X on a thermal glider, or is this not a thermal glider?
Video suggestion: Radian XL vs. Bird of Time (electric conversion).
