That is the rule. You have to pull over and give way to Oversize loads. That is why they have pilot vehicles to escort them.

They have pilot cars to let them know what’s going ahead of them, if it’s a high load the pilot car will have a poll mounted on front to check for clearances

8.5m wide load in convoy? Pretty standard practice and a common occurrence Australia wide. Shoulda been 2 police vehicles out front pushing you off the road as well.
