      At least Kotoura's Mom really regret her decision. Well, even when she left Kotoura, she cried. I guess at that time, she just really didn't know what to do anymore, so she left Kotoura in her (Kotoura's Mom) father's house.

    In my opinion:
    Apologizing and saying you’re weak is one thing, but it still doesn’t excuse the fact that you shouldn’t have left your child. You should stick with them through thick and thin no matter what she has or do. It’s called supportive.

      @@theodorecarter6601 Being a devil's advocate here now, I think it's fairly reasoned out how she ended up abandoning Kotoura.
      Imagine being cheated with by your husband and the info came from your child who you just discovered has that supernatural power right then and there. It would've been an action done as a result of all that combined, and it's clear she does regret leaving her. Along the way, she might've just thought that at that point, Kotoura would be better off without her and thus she felt the need to take on that cold shell that is obviously just there as a cover as seen in the end here.

So yeah, her actions were wrong no matter what side of the story you hear.

She would’ve found out eventually anyway and the would’ve gotten pissed at her daughter for not telling right away if she kept quiet then.
      A lot of people say to put yourself in their shoes and maybe you’ll understand, but that’s the thing, I did put myself in her shoes and I STILL wouldn’t have done what she did, ESPECIALLY to a kid who doesn’t even fully comprehend the situation, sure I’d be sad and irritated but not at everything that would be in way

      @@theodorecarter6601 "life doesnt give second chance", its sad how this is basically cancel culture at its finest, yes, kotoura mom did something terribly wrong, but thats in the past, let me be clear here, what she did is undoubtedly unforgivable, but, she still can deserve a second chance, its up to the person to work towards that and show they gained it or deserved it, what you did in the past, is in the past, there is no way to change that, but you can still ammend it, read well, ammend, not fix or turn back to how it was, thats the point on this scene, she refalls in her self destructive behaviours during it, but at the end, one can see she is taking the steps to improve even if a bit as a start, thats the point, things cant go back to how theyy are and are different, seen with kotoura noting the food is different to how she asked for it or how she remembers it, but its a connection that she hasnt lost and can be changed from sour to bittersweet if at all

      Yeah but you gotta be empathetic your husband you trusted cheated on you and you found out through ur daughters telepathy. It was more of an in the momment of a cluster of emotions she felt Pain, Betrayal, denial, sorrow and Hatred. At that momment defiantly didn't mean whatbshe said it was a bust of emotion but she couldn't handle the mental strain of living with the man who cheated on her. Urnm right she shouldn't have elft her child behind period or blamed her in any means. But because she said those things to her daughter she felt guilt and self pity to point assumednm for long whilemit was better she didn't have her around. And she regretted the way she left things for so long.
      But at the end of the day if her daughter needs her or is in danger she'll defiantly take action. It may seek unforgivable form the childs perspective but from what she saw and felt in her moms dream she knew it was so much mor complicated underneath it all.

      It's not unforgivable...many children learn to forgive their parents for abandoning them. Sure at first there are feelings such as hatred, denial, confusion, regret, horror, sadness, and etc. but they soon learn that it was for their own good. Sometimes a parent can't handle having a child or just doesn't love them, or the parent is forced to leave them because of issues that they couldn't control, some leave because they are alcoholics and they want to try to stop for their child, some are just plain alcoholics and can't stop, and some weren't strong enough to take on the role. Many parents left their kids for selfish and selfless reasons. You're right though you can't change the fact that the child was abandoned...but we should grateful that the parents left before it got to the point of neglect or abuse just because the parent couldn't control him/herself.

    The mother admitted she was weak. She had a break down and turned mentally abusive something she almost regretted immediately. I feel like she knew this would keep happening and thought since she couldn't help he daughter because she was so weak she needed to leave her with her grandfather a person who could. Sure it was a shitty move but maybe it was the only thing she thought was an option. We say terrible things when we feel trapped and can't help the person we love. Our actions don't always make sense.

      @nicholbrownshayne 6 лет назад +61

      I actually agree with DoReLeigh44
      here This situation between kumiko and kotoura is not so black and white. If you look at the first episode again you'll see that the mother tried everything she could to help kotoura, taking her to various doctors to try and 'cure' her. When that failed she became so desperate that she started thinking kotoura was possessed by an evil spirit and took her to a shrine. If anything it looks like kumiko realised afterwards that she did not have the mental fortitude to raise such a special child let alone one that could not control her mind reading abilities to the point where she often confused reading minds with people actually talking which got her into a lot of trouble at school.
      I do agree that kumiko should not have said that and from the looks of it she never wanted to either but i believe she did it so as to make sure Kotoura would no longer feel any attachment while leaving her with her grandfather but of course that only created another problem. There is far more that went on between them than "cruel mother abandon and traumatize poor innocent child".

    • @damianworek4444
      @damianworek4444 6 лет назад +37

      Sorry but I will never understand the whole "be cruel to someone so that they stop caring about you and go on with their lifes" trope, especially when you do that to children who are more likely to get traumatized by such things.

      well that's understandable, being mean to the person you care about can confuse many when they only see it on the surface level but often times this trope is used in more complex matters.

      kibara seriously? How much of my reply did you read? I DO NOT AGREE WITH WHAT SHE DID. That being said, this is a case of "good intentions but wrong decision". What she said to kotoura was really mean, no denying that, but she did it to make sure that kotoura would no longer feel attachment to her while she lives with her grandfather. Which was really stupid but this situation is not so black and white.

    I feel like this is the only few animes where abandonment was handled pretty well. I mean heck, most mothers leave their child for stupid reasons in most animes (like in a certain anime where said mom left her child for not being good at a certain sport she was passionate about) but here, you understand why Kotoura's mother left. She didn't have the mental capacity to keep going, she felt herself going insane and left like she couldn't do a better job for her child anymore. Does it justify her leaving her child and giving her trauma of abandonment, *NO.* But you understand why she did it. It made her character pretty fleshed out and human, she made mistakes and she's definitely flawed however... Although she's no hero, she's no villain either.

    Some of you guys might be missing the entire point of the resolution.
    I don't think the anime really is talking about excuses and trying to preach about how it's okay to allow abusive people into your life, but I think it's more talking about growing past the torment and forgiving, understanding what other people are feeling and despite not being an excuse that anyone can grow past the abuse they grew with. It's about letting go, because unlike Kotoura we don't truly know what the other person may be feeling. Nobody's perfect and there's not always a redemption, but there's always a new start. Kotoura's mother was abusive and definitely a cheating liar, but she admitted her faults and weakness. The show doesn't say she was a good mother or even excuses it. But Kotoura's also mature enough to see what she was truly feeling and forgive her mother for being such a way. There's no redemption arc for her mother, there's no rekindling, there's no "I'm gonna be there for you from now on" or "I'll do better". Her mother makes food for her and leaves without a word as a form of possibly saying "I love you and I'm sorry" without really saying it, because some people are too weak to fully apologize. Even if not, it could just be her own way to start a new beginning. And Kotoura accepts the food, saying she's also willing to start something new. It's realistic. It doesn't push anything. Kotoura has friends already and came out of her shell, but the thing that hurt her in the beginning was the fact that her mother was a bad mother. Despite growing past some of that, it still hurt her. And she finally opened up about it to her. She finally aired out her grievances. But in accepting her mother's food after an argument and a fight, finally letting everything out, she can finally begin the process of moving past the very thing that hurt her in the first place.
    Before anyone uses their personal stories as a means of being walking proof to dispute, I've been through it too. And I forgave all my abusers. Nobody's perfect and I definitely shut myself out as well as being someone else's thorn on the side. Nobody's perfect. But I imagine that some people make bad decisions and end up regretting it. Some people are weak and take it out on others. It's not an excuse, but you've also done crappy things to people and caused them damage whether you realize it or not. You're well in your right to believe that cutting people off is the right thing to do, but in reality, we either move past it through cutting ties and burning bridges, forgiveness and forgetting or not forgetting. But the anime is pushing towards the forgiveness side and isn't wrong for doing so. There's no definitive right answer but everyone has their own healing process. The fact of it all is that if you don't move past it, it will hurt forever until there's a form of closure. And staying in your shell is not the right one.

    People are forgetting the mom didn’t even mean anything she was saying. The moment she said she wish she hadn’t given birth to Haruka, she knew she was lying, she really wished to protect her child and she loved her so much. If you haven’t watched the full anime, please don’t comment on this and complain on literally the opposite of this anime.
    (Ps. Harukas mother didn’t abuse her, stop saying that, it might’ve gone to mental abuse by having your mother say such a thing, but this isn’t abuse)

    • @Something5451
      @Something5451 5 лет назад +61

      Verbal abuse is still abuse. Telling a child that they ruined their parents life is abusive, scaring a child by throwing a bottle at them is abusive, telling a child that you wished they were never born is abusive. It doesn't matter that there are reasons for the mothers actions (husband neglecting the daughter and her relationship, being cheated on, not understanding her daughers abilities), what she did was still traumatizing to haruka. You can tell because many times haruka thinks she is going to lose all her friends and that everything is her fault--this is the result of a traumatizing childhood.

    • @Something5451
      @Something5451 5 лет назад +12

      @@harukakotoura1489 I don't think she necessarily forgave her. I think she's happy to have her mom back in her life, even though she knows it's going to be painful. She was smiling, talking about the bitter, overcooked eggs. I think this is symbolism of the mom--she's not the same as she was before (over easy lol), but haruka will still take it.
      Just because haruka cuddled with her, and was all happy at the end, doesn't mean she is going to act like the mom didn't do anything wrong. She's still very much a child that aches for her moms love and affection, and she's very understanding (i'd argue, too understanding) of her mother's circumstances.
      Either way, they have a long way to go to patch things up...and haruka should seek therapy.

    5 years after I write this comment and I see alot of people here miss my point by 100 miles
    The reason why I blame the father back than is that he doesn't spend time and try to fix the problem with her mother.
    If he had the time to talk and solve the problem with the mother first, the woman will not cheat in the first place.
    Did I excused the mother behavior? Hell nah, but all of this happen because of the father actions

    I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of hate for this--
    I really wanted to like this show and support it, I really did, but this brought way too many memories from my past family. The way they ended it really just gave the impression that the abusers deserve sympathy too. I believe that adults should take responsibility for their actions, Haruka's mother, my parents, and even myself. This ending really leaves the audience to view abusers differently, to make them think the abusee did something wrong for not understanding the abuser. I don't and never want to understand why my parents abused me as a child, it has left so many traumatized moments in my life and to think that this shows reasoning is I was in the wrong because I didn't understand, really doesn't settle well with me. If someone is abusing you, you have every right to express your pain, don't sympathize with their reasoning. No one has the right to abuse someone.

      I don't disagree. However... I identify myself with Haruka a lot including her situation and her mom. Honestly, this scene made me laugh a little because almost the exact same thing happened, minus the pillows (which would have hurt less) I learned a lot since things got worst and I was forced to leave. But... Because of what I learned, how she became this way, why she became like this, and how everything was connected... I don't blame this scene too much... you don't have to forgive them and everyone's situation is different. I haven't forgiven her... her scars are too deep, but I finally saw her own... and that was something that actually brought us back together. We are both helping each other move on... she apologizes constantly... nothing can take it back... "Seek first to understand, than to be understood' I'm not saying understanding her to make it ok for what she did, but it made it easier to reach her and fix what damage we had. That's what I get from this scene. We both voiced our frustration and after it was said... it seemed pretty dumb on both of us... then we laughed at our own misery... heh even the part in choice of men. Even now, I'm finding connections to my Dad after he wasn't in my life... understanding them and finding connections, doesn't right wrongs, but it can smooth the future and patch a hole in the path. It's how you want to live and see it, this is how I see it and my experience. Some really don't deserve it, but I also know I can't judge for I'm not God. Only He sees what my family has done and how they lived when I wasn't there. I still hurt from my past too, but... I'm glad I was given a chance to rekindle something with my folks.

    Right, I have quite a few issues with this scene, and I'm not the only one. Warning: It's going to be a long one.
    First, the mother lets herself into Kotoura's house and acts like she has a God given right to be there and acts as if she owns the place, when she is lucky her daughter even lets her within five miles of her.
    Instead of 'hello' and other pleasantries, she spends the majority of the time throwing insults and complaints at her daughter, who is nothing but gracious and walks on eggshells around her mother the entire time, and quite frankly who can blame her? The fact that she even lets Kumiko stay is saint-like mercy in itself. Considering everything that has gone on, the least Kumiko could do was to try and behave kindly to her daughter, even if she finds it difficult.
    Kumiko then proceeds to demand refreshments (offering to come with her as a safeguard doesn't cover it - Kumiko could very well go by herself, her daughter just got back home from being out. Besides which, Kotoura owes her nothing. I suspect the strong filial duty of Japanese and Asian societies in general is driving her actions more than what one would expect from a girl towards her abusive mother.
    Then, expectedly, Kumiko gets drunk. Why her daughter, knowing full well what happens when her thoughtless mother gets access to the bottle, allowed her to do this I put down to her frankly piteous desire to please the mother most daughters would have kicked out the door long ago.
    Expectedly, Kumiko gets drunk, and, expectedly, things go sour. Kumiko has the audacity and heartlessness to get angry at her daughter (who has let her stay, bought her food, bowed to her at every turn) and mock her for her 'lies' about having any friends. Any mother with a shred of self-reflection and compassion, feeling guilty for her past actions, would never let these words pass her lips - drunk or otherwise. She would also be GLAD that her daughter has finally found happiness - happiness she and her husband (but mostly her) helped destroy. She is clearly projecting her own bitterness onto Kotoura.
    Instead of feeling remorse for having spoken this way after being rightly called out by her daughter, Kumiko gets angry, and accuses Kotoura - of all things - of being selfish, when all this time Kotoura has done nothing but think about her mother and do right by her. Kotoura was abandoned by the one person who should have stuck by her through everything, left to be further emotionally destroyed and almost left catatonic and bereft of happiness. And Kumiko has the audacity to try and turn the tables and make her feel guilty for inadvertently hurting others due to a power she didn't understand, let alone know how to control? Kotoura hurt without meaning to, Kumiko hurt knowing full well what their impact would mean.
    Kumiko's hypocrisy goes further when she accuses her own daughter of having bad taste in men, glossing over the fact that Kotoura's man actually loves her, whereas Kumiko's relationships are an embarrassment. Kumiko tries to pull 'I'm your mother, you can't talk to me like that! bull. She isn't repentant, she hasn't learned.
    Then once again Kumiko puts her hand on her daughter and attempts to hit her. Thankfully, Kotoura stops it by pushing her mother onto the bed - reminiscent of the time when Kumiko did the same when she abandoned her daughter to her misery.
    Then the whole thing devolves into a pillow fight, which many have taken to be partly humorous, and it is played as such, which I find really, really stupid. It kills the drama and reduces what could have been a verbal beat-down from daughter to mother - again reminiscent of the time Kumiko abandoned her - into play-fighting. It's compounded by cutting AWAY from the fight to some guy walking his dog outside hearing the commotion. Wow. What could have been a reality-check for the bitch of a mother who still cannot seem to conceive any suffering besides her own, let alone her own daughter, is little more than a semi-light-hearted pillow fight.
    When the fight is over, Kumiko still reveals her tactlessness and conveniently selective memory, not recalling the time when she told her daughter to shut up about the thoughts she hears, putting her daughter in potential danger in the event she hears something like what she heard from Tsuyama. Kumiko still has the affront to compare her bad taste in men with that of her daughter - something Kotoura rightly points out. Kotoura's pervy man loves her and cares for her (and is her own age/roughly), while Tsuyama is an ADULT MAN perving on a child. Kumiko then wants to drink some more. Does this stupid alcoholic bitch never learn?
    Oh, and the icing on the cake! Kumiko orders Kotoura to clean up the mess they JOINTLY made during their spat. When Kotoura (rightly) tells her that she should help clean up the mess she jointly caused, Kumiko mentions the promise a young, desperate Kotoura made when her mother was about to leave about doing the cooking and the cleaning - you know, right before Kumiko pushed her away and told her she wished Kotoura had never been born and abandoned her! And THEN Kotoura reacts in a sort of exasperated 'Oh mother!' way, not 'Oh yeah, that was right before you pushed me, wished I was never born and abandoned me to my misery! Get out of my house, you selfish, alcoholic, thoughtless bitch! I'll dance on your grave!'
    And then Kotoura OBEYS HER. She literally just enabled her mother's thoughtlessness, treated a reminder of the worst day of her life (one of many) as an embarrassing 'Oh mother dear' moment, and reset their dynamic of dutiful, passive daughter and (bitch) abusive mother right back to the way the scene began in the space of a few seconds. And she does the cleaning up while the bitch sleeps (in what is the most unlikely sleeping position I've ever seen).
    Oh, but it's all alright because poor Kumiko cried and felt BAD. Note the bitch didn't have the guts to apologise outright to her daughter's face and confront every painful thing that her daughter went through before and after her abandoned her daughter. Kotoura sees her mother's tears, and then FEELS BAD HERSELF for not seeing this at the time, mental scarring and crushing agony be damned. What Kotoura went through that day is now placed under that of her selfish, weak, bitch mother. How could any child be expected to understand or even care about what her mother was feeling at a time like that?
    Remember, Kotoura's actions where that of an innocent child who couldn't understand her powers - Kumiko's were that of an adult with full control of her actions and the fate of her child. She CHOSE to roughly push her daughter to the floor. She CHOSE to tell her terrified, distraught daughter that it was all her fault and she didn't want anything to do with her. She CHOSE to tell her distraught daughter that wished she'd never been born, abandoning her to years of cruelty and misery, rather than at least explaining that she can't cope and that it was best she stay with her grandfather while she sought help. NOPE, I wish I never gave you life, I'm out of here! Have fun with your psychological trauma!
    The tears she shed after the fact don't matter. Ever. At all. And that fact that this is what acts as the healing factor and gets Kotoura to snuggle next to her mother and secure a happy ending is madness to me. As far as I am concerned this scene should and could only exist as a bad ending where a daughter, desperate for love, excuses and dismisses all the pain she went through just for a scrap of it from a heartless, thoughtless bitch of a mother.
    The kicker? When Kotoura wakes up, her mother isn't there to share the beloved breakfast meal with her daughter - she's gone! And the meal is bitter and overdone!! I'd laugh if it wasn't so pathetic and awful.
    Filial duty wins out in the end, but I believe any daughter with a shred of self-worth and basis in reality would have kicked her into the dirt right after throwing back in her face every painful thing she went through pre and post abandonment - and a good, hard push to into the dirt for good measure!
    Fuck Kumiko, she belongs in hell!

      This comment gives me hope. Pretty depressing seeing all the other comments treating this scene as a happy revelation and instant redemption thing. I can only hope the people who think that way are really young and haven't experienced any remote whiff of abuse. Can you imagine what would happen if this anime was more self-aware and was working on trope deconstruction? The following episodes would have been utterly brutal. Urgh. Well yeah, a year later but thanks for making this comment exist :P

      Take all my YES!
      I literally screamed at the screen for the entire scene. It's absolutely disgusting, and not in the good intended way.
      It's pretty much the most unearned redemption arc in the history of fiction. It brought down an okay 7/10 show to the dumpster fire 2/10 in an instant for me.
