small leather goods presents: what's up guys!!! In this video, I am going to show you how I try to make the most out of leather scraps... hope you enjoy!!!
Thank you very much for this very educational video, Gary! I've learned 3 tips today: how to round corners with a coin (so simple and yet, had never thought of it), using a drill instead of hammering like mad to punch a hole and the little loop you make over the needle at the end of every stitch.
I have been fighting to get rounded corners with my xacto blade, I never thought about using a coin to cut around awesome video and new Sub here -Jason
Great job Gary. I've truly been benefited by all your helpful videos & just wanted you to know. Also where can I find those particular snaps ? Thanks man for everything. Mark in Ky. USA
Looks like a synthetic waxed thread, probably "synthetic sinew". The needles look like saddlemaker needles, except his are kind of triangular looking at the point. But it really doesn't matter. Use semi blunt leatherworking needles and some kind of waxed thread of appropriate width for what you're doing and you're pretty much good to go. People have some creative preferences, but it's just a preference. As with most kinds of craft, it's not all that important.
Harness needles, which come in a number of sizes but are all round-pointed so as to not snag outside the prepunched holes. Threads are many and varied. Some can be split depending on the twist or lack thereof (sinew) for a finer gauge.
Hello again, in order to slick the edge, the leather need to be moisturized, otherwise, it can't be burnished. That wood burnisher is for making the edge slick, many other material with a concave shape will serve that same purpose as well, such as plastic or aluminum.
When I put on ma leather, and rock to sum Metallica, Delta Parole, Foo Fighters or the Smashing Pumpkins I feel like I can do anything in the whole wide world.
there are contact cement dedicated for leather crafting, I simply look into the description of the glue, if it says good for leather, go for it, but definitely NOT grazy glue for leather, nor Gorilla glue for leather, those are for repairing, totally different thing... they will screw up your leather!!!
Using the drill to make holes is genius! Thanks!

Please comment on the products you use.
What the name of the wooden tool you use to smooth the edges?
wood burnisher!!!
what type of thread and needles do you use for stitching?
Honey Island Outfitters I don't know what kind of leather needle he used but the thread is waxed thread

Hello, just subscribed. Enjoyed this video. What was the drill bit used to make the holes ?
Thank you very much, that drill bit is actually a hole punch. It fits perfectly on a hand drill.
Can I ask you what you are using there as your mat.. with the grid lines? I need to get one! Thank you!!
That's a cutting mat brought from stationery store!!! Thank you very much!!!
Thank you!!!
Hi Gary,
what is the liquid you put on with a sponge before rubbing the edges please.
John - Newbie in UK
Hello John, that was just water, the leather edge burnishes better moisturized.
why do you trim the edges and tool name ?
Gummy Bear I think its a beveler, helps give it a rounded edge when you burnish it
ok thanks
Nice
Thank you very much!!!
Also.. what are you using as a matt when making your stitch holes with the tools.. it's black....
I simply place some thick cow hide underneath for making holes!!!
Thank you!
Hi its me again. Can u explain why u use water(guess its water) and rub it with wood?

@@garyipip thanks👍🏼
Can make lots of money from scrap leather! I use a circle punch to cut 1" rounds for earrings.
Great vid what is the oil called lease
Thanks, if you want to apply oil on leather, use neatsfoot oil, or mink oil.
Where do I find that folk you are using to make holes all around ? Thank you.
Weaver leather sells prick irons, I have also seen cheaper options on wish
@@jakkford2592
Thank you !
Can you use any oil
neatsfoot oil is the proper oil for leather!!!
Picture was irritating. Thought that lighter cover and small purse would be made
