R.I.P. Hugh Scully. I remember you fondly on Sunday nights, along with many other 1990s shows, like Last Of The Summer Wine, and repeats of 'Allo 'Allo. Seems like an age ago. I was only a young boy back then. Sundays were bitter sweet, because Monday was school day again, ha ha.
Always loved the show - have to watch online now. I especially loved the family asked what they would do with the valuable painting who said "Well it isn't going back in the garage."
My good friend's neighbor and I have ALWAYS adored the program since the middle of the series...well, perhaps a little past the middle of the series. But certainly a long time before the present show was aired.
Love this show!!. I could watch this with my mum at one side of me, and my gran sat at the other, and nothing that would cause any one embarrassemet!! So good!!
I haven’t seen AR for a while but always enjoyed learning about art and historical pieces, how they came into the owner’s possession and getting a feel of what they are worth. I didn’t see the Richard Dadd episode as I was far too young but what strikes me is Peter Nahum’s nervous, yet mildly excited voice, where he tries to explain something that he scarcely believes is before his eyes.
I love Antiques Roadshow. I love how the experts tell the story about the objects and how the objects owners tell their story about their reson that they have the object. And many of the objects are incredibly beautiful. I was interested in the painting by Richard Dadd. The painter that murdered his father. He also painted ' the fairy fellers master stroke' .
Many years back, many years, my wife and I went to one of their viewings and we brought a small round statue. Not knowing what it was worth or what it was call, the expert asked me how much do you think the cow is worth? I looked at my wife and then at the expert and said, she's not for sale and that's about all I remember about our trip to the road show.
I had learn so much about antiques and I would like to thank the Antique Road Show and Antiques Antiques for uploading, still waiting to see one of the paintings or items I do have, will be nice the extra pandemic money
Wow, to live in a country who's history goes back that far, there must a thousands of pieces like the silver that man brought in just waiting to be discovered.
Damn, this is how I always wanted to watch Antiques Roadshow - with google at hand! The Richard Dadd fella was really interesting - he travelled across Egypt by train and said he was in contact with the Egyptian Gods. He lost his mind, stabbed his father to death and was placed in Bethlem Hospital (aka Bedlam) and never had a coherent conversation again. All he communicated were weird and intricate paintings.
Thanks so much for your research. I was dying to know who this fellow was and to find out more about him, but could not even understand the man's name due to the expert's enunciation and the bad sound quality. Memorable painting ... will look into him some more!
At Broadmoor hospital in the old museum room in the central hall (probably all been moved now that the new hospital is opened) there are over a dozen paintings and ink drawings by Richard Dadd. Should be given to the national gallery or such like really so everyone can enjoy them.
Seems like a kind and humble young man to me. It sounds like it was a family heirloom and lucky for his family, he was smart enough to bring it to the antique show to get an appraisal. And luckily for mankind, unlike antiques, looks don't determine the value of a person.
I have a box load of Morgan Silver Dollars that I found metal detecting, not bad for about 6 hrs of walking around. I need to get a magnet and test each one. If the magnet just slides off that's great, but if it sticks then it's fake. An executive from a Gold Bureau said from looking at some phone pics that the 1878-CC looked perfect and gave it an 67 rate and said if seen in person the rate could go higher, that it could be worth 5 figures. Dumb me thought ok, a $1,000. or so then after starting to study about the coins found out that 5 figures could mean million or millions. I about fell off the couch. But you shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch. Before shelling out alot of money to get them looked at I'll get a magnet and have a go at them. I just pray they are real. I mean, why go to all the trouble to very carefully stash the coins in a box? I know the dime sized gold coins with Queen Victoria on the front and a rider on a horse on the back fighting a dragon are real so I hope the Morgan's are real. I'd move out of my apartment building so fast it wouldn't be funny and buy a nice little home that's for sale right now. Take care of the money and it takes care of you. I have 4... 1878-CCs that I know of and other CC's. Haven't seen all of them yet. Only have seen like 29 or so and will wait till I get the magnet, then see the rest like a Christmas day opening presents. Or if they're fake it would be a let down but I'll still metal detect cause it's alot of fun. I found another metal box that had a really nice wooden box containing silverware and 4 gold/diamond watches and some rings. I think they were burried to hide them from the British during the War of 1812. I've been praying for a find like this for over 30 years. So don't give up your dreams.😎 If the Morgans are real and could sell well I can't wait to tell my crap corrupt apt manager "goodbye"....
