Currently in my first year of my MFA program. (Fully funded as well!) I don't have a BFA and have a bit of a non traditional background. Art Prof videos were a HUGE help in figuring out the intricacies of applying and peeling back some of the gatekeeping in art academia. So happy you're still making videos so people like me have a better shot at pursuing their dreams.
Wow congratulations on your admission, amazing! I'm so glad we could be here for you😀 -Prof Lieu
Completed my MFA in May, your portfolio critiques helped me to articulate and express myself confidently in first and second year in my critiques. I wanted to go straight to practice, but it's a bit sticky, so I'm definitely going to teach. I got a full scholarship with subsidized health insurance and a stipend and finished the program with a 3.940 /4.0 GPA. Only applied to one grad school got in on my first try, too!
WOAH, congratulations!!! You should be so proud-- we're honored to be part of your journey! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I recommend taking a portfolio writing course so that you have a dedicated "editor" meaning the professor to look over your work and provide recommendations on your artist statement.
Yes! We have services for this artprof.org/services/ -Prof Lieu
Thank you Art Prof!!! Invaluable info as always!😊
You're so welcome, thanks for tuning in! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Confused by the advice being offered in the first 7 minutes. Is it being advised not to mention that you want to teach and/or be part of an artist community because that's what everyone says? Or is it being advised to think about how to say that's what you want in a way that's unique and reflective of who you're as a person, so as not to sound too cliche' and overly broad?
Yes, I think rephrasing common ideas into individual experience & motive is what's important here! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I think she is recommending that you make it unique. In my experience, an artist statement/similar to what I did in my MA program for English just introduces you, your interests, and your teaching pedagogy. This is a formulation of your experience tutoring or being a TA and how you believe students learn or you adapt your learning techniques for different students. I might make a video about this. It's a really fun topic. I usually structure my artist statement with 3 paragraphs. First one is experience and introduction. Second one is linking experience to your pedagogy, teaching philosophy, and third one links back to the position you are applying for and how you fit in with the culture at that educational institution. People really get into the "creative aspects" of writing an artist statement and honestly I think it's more about structure, goals, and how you fit in with the position you are applying for. Ultimately your portfolio shows your level of skill and anyone can gather what you want to do from that work. The statement positions you for the culture of teaching you will enter.
