Corrections:
1:54:43 Battlefield 2 technically featured bullet-drop too. BadCo2 just has more drastic bullet drop, and it applies to every weapon now, rather than just sniper rifles like in BF2.
03:38:15 That caption should read BFRoundup, not BrokenMachine
04:02:06 The Firestorm map was NOT added to conquest. I mistook this for "Lofoten Islands" which was added a bit later. It uses the same assets like buildings and environment design, but is only available for small-scale modes like Squad Conquest + TDM

@@bionicle2122 Raycevick's breakdown of 007 Nightfire was incredible. When I saw that I knew, "This guy knows exactly what he's talking about."
I recorded over 9+ hours of Raycevick for this documentary as we talked about the Battlefield series lol
Did you notice that the grenade launcher in vietnam had the tiger camo on it similar to the one the guy in the trench was using in apocalypse now. that's actually a crazy detail

It is a lot of work, yes. But frankly the video is just too long. There's just no way I can watch it in full.
You're absolutely right. To the guy who thinks it's too long just watch it in 4 - 5 parts to get through it or skip the entries you're not interested in. It's the necessary length to cover everything simple as that. That's why it's a massive undertaking.
@@Andrew-ro6cr who's forcing you to watch in in full at one sitting?
@@Andrew-ro6cr Well... don't watch it in one sitting then.
He even got the runtime to 4 hours 20 minutes. Nice
This documentary is a monumental achievement in comprehensively covering a major game series. It covers all the details without getting boring, and remains perfectly objective while exploring different player viewpoints. This is the best of its kind on all of RUclips.
Indeed!
True that!
One thing that doesn't get nearly enough credit on BF1 is it's soundtrack. It completely changes the game. It makes it more emotional, more immersive and give the game the sense of gravity and respect that any portrait of WW1 should have.
Truly amazing soundtrack, maybe the best ever in a game.
Not just the soundtrack, the sound design im general. Those screams and war cries in BF1, man. Absolutely haunting
The best bf game ever
@@pedroholsbach8592 the whistle!!!
Audio design was one of the most overlooked aspects of this entire review / documentary tbh. I didn’t hear it really get acknowledged all that much. And it’s not just BF1 which shines in the audio department. But it is a standout.
I think the roar of the jets in BF3 and BF4 has been lost in BF2042. They no longer generate that powerful sound like they used to. It’s one of the several things that makes 2042 feel like a shell of a BF game to me. The taming of the destruction system is another reason.
*_As a Battlefield Franchise veteran (Played since BF1942). I appreciate this documentary. Truly. I feel like it is an homage to vet players like me. Thank you for making my day._*

I was just about 8 years old, I played during 2142 as well and battlefield 2.
Basically been there nearly since the start… sad to see what has happened to bf tho
@@Glizzy_Waterwhy are you the only one taking an issue with the terminology? DICE calls long time players “Franchise Veterans” since like Bad Company 2 or BF3.
You need to catch up mr.StoLeN VaLoR
The new DICE team seriously needs to watch this documentary to see what made Battlefield a Battlefield game. 2042 is a shambles and is missing so many features.
If it ain't Bad Company 3 I ain't interested. BF3 and BF4 were awesome but we need Bad Company 3.
But nobody can agree on what' makes Battlefield Battlefield lol.
The personnel at dice are extremely left wing nowadays. They love turning their nose up at the "little people" that buy their games and preach to them to not buy their game. They also think that gamers are little kids that need to be coddled and games should be a "safe space" with no scoreboards. Apparently the world will be ravaged by climate tornadoes in a mere 21 years. Apparently our player avatars can't be interesting and humorous characters and instead we need representation including an old woman that wouldn't last 10 seconds on a battlefield. Unless the old devs come back, battlefield has no chance to be good and is just name recognition at this point.

This video is incredible. I'm a battlefield vet since 1942. I'm very happy you included all the mod supports and even the forgotten games.
2142 was my favorite Battlefield game, and I will gladly die on this hill. As imbalanced wacky c4 jumping as it was, it remains my favorite.
By far my favorite too
BF2142 is the best BF to date in my opinion. Racked up 8500hrs on that perfect game.
Same, was the last BF game I really played together with BF 2.
Does anyone knows if someone revive 2142 again?
2142 was the best Battlefield Game :D
I'm so glad BF2 got the recognition it deserved in this documentary
This channel started with Battlefield 2. BF2 is legendary
@@Nick930 I kid you not I was in the process of making a video on all the forgotten features of Battlefield 2, but you hit the nail on the head. If the Frostbite engine had mod support like Refactor we would've had Battlefield Portal a long time ago.
After seeing this video... it seem like every game since BF2 is a downgrade
Hands down my favourite game ever.
Honestly if the moment to moment gameplay wasn’t dogshit I would put it higher.
For me BC2 is the perfect battlefield.
I'm with Battlefield since 1942. Battlefield is still the best Franchise for me. No matter how 2042 is doing right now.
I'm to old for gaming now anyways but I will always be grateful for the gaming time I had with this franchise and their Battlefields.
So many good memories.
Thank you so much for putting this documentary together. So much hard work but it's a masterpiece.

As someone who’s first Battlefield experiences were with Hardline and 4 and most hours being in Battlefield 1 and V, I really loved this documentary’s coverage of the history of the older games in the franchise that I never got to play. It really helps me put things into perspective and understand how the game has become what it is today. I really understand now why Battlefield 2, Bad Company 1/2 and Battlefield 3 are so revered, the first of which seemingly creating the experience and adding the features that essentially made Battlefield what it is currently. I also now know where the game mode and name "Rush" came from!
Thank you Nick and all of those who contributed to this documentary, it was amazing to watch in its entirety and I have been waiting on it ever since it’s trailer was announced. Well done, all of you guys!
that's definitely one of my favorite quotes from the video. That and
"What's that one map.. the one with the flood.. it like.. flooded a lot..."
"....Flood Zone?"
This was absolutely immaculate. The amount of effort that must’ve went into making this is astounding. It was both informative as well as nostalgic for those who have played a lot of the older titles. I’m sure more than a few had a sense of overwhelming joy and sadness at times past with all the memories and friends we’ve made playing these groundbreaking games for dozens if not hundreds of hours over the years. Thank you so much for this, Nick. It truly is impressive and I bet even the people at DICE who watch this will be extremely proud of all they’ve accomplished over the years.
❤
Watched this over the span of 2 days and am i glad i did, the feeling of nostalgia alone was worth it. To not even speak about the noticeable amount of work that went into this, thank you so much for making this
Absolutely best-in-class documentary. Been watching this in chunks on my lunch breaks. Though I’m not a seasoned vet of the franchise, it has inspired to play some of these recently. I don’t generally gravitate towards multiplayer games in general but BF has been the one I’ve enjoyed the most. Your amazing work on this video is greatly appreciated.
This is such an amazing documentary. All of the current employees at DICE should have to watch this in its entirety so they can be reminded of exactly what made the Battlefield games so great since they seem to have forgotten.
i think like 90% of the old devs left DICE
Especially the level design team. Those guys really lost their way.
What was the goal ?. It was not being pretty, it was not creating interesting spaces for gameplay, it was not making logical maps that fit together in a way that made sense, so what was the goal ?
.
They really needed to hire a couple of architects or planners to tell them how spaces go together
More importantly the execs and PowerPoint managers to get a sense of responsibility they have to their customers
Just about every dice employee has quit to make another studio called embark studios due to EA robbing them of creative freedom by forcing them to go woke in BF5 and then reduced their salaries and robbed them of bonuses when the game sold poorly
Now these ex-dice Devs are working on a new true next gen game called arc raiders
@@damn6039 I mean.. I don't think the new studio is not going to go woke. Since one of the leaders of that studio is the guy that supported the going of wokeness. But I at least hope it won't be as bad as the fiasco of bf5

Battlefield 2 will forever be my favorite. Just an exceptionally innovative and epic game for the time.
true,its still the best one
Any old classic game is better than these game project business approached schts
Not really, 2142 was innovative, Bad Company was innovative. Two was fantastic but at the end of the day, it was still a tree amongst a forest.
The systems and what they packed into that game was astonishing. While BF3 was a graphic achievement and huge step forward, BF2 had ALL the options you could ever want -- and it ran flawlessly.
That BC2, BF3, BF4 stretch was some of my favorite gaming ever
I’ve watched all your docs and this is undoubtedly your masterpiece. By the end I totally understand why this series has such a loyal fanbase, through the good and bad. Real talk you deserve an industry award for this. Your docs are incredibly informative yet never boring; they’re fun but never juvenile. You are so earnest with your work and I really appreciate it. Wow. Just wow. Amazing work, Nick!
The amount of effort to go i to this, im super impressed and loved every second of it, genuinely like a documentary!! Quality work my friend!
Not only is BF2 the best BF game that I’ve ever played, it’s the best online game that I’ve ever experienced. Easily put in over 3000 hrs in it until EA killed its official servers. Hands the down the best BF game, the king of the series.
2005 was such a cool year. BF2 and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory versus mode dominated my online gaming time. Absolutely loved both of those experiences to death.
Dude which are the best 3 BF campaigns to play ? (PS4)
Agreed.
BF2 is still the best one
@@jimking81 Not a BF campaign type of guy but if Id have to pick it would easily be BF:BC2’s campaign.
What's such a bloody shame is that players for YEARS have asked for 128 player servers. All the way back from Battlefield 2. Experiments were done with Forgotten hope, Project Reality, AIX mods etc. with 100 - 150 player servers. Even Venice unleashed and Project Rome experimented with this (there were also hacked servers in Battlefield 3's beta with 128 players and it was fucking glorious). Then when we finally got it in Battlefield 2042, it was so poorly implemented with the bad map design with wide-open spaces lacking cover, that people prefer 64 players (and still hate the map design). That's also ignoring the plethora of other issues with 2042. It was supposed to be building on top of what made all the other Battlefield games great, the class structure and balance, the destruction, the movement mechanics, the vehicle customization and gameplay, the commanders, the buildable structures, the variety of weapons and depth of customization.... all became a part of the formula. More than half of those things don't even exist anymore. Not even a fucking spectator mode! Not even a damn score board to see who's doing well or who's doing TOO well and potentially hacking (there is a vibrant hacking community in 2042 as well... but you wouldn't know!)
Also some of the design choices in Battlefield Vietnam made it over to Rising Storm 2 Vietnam with the tunnels as spawn points. It's amazing to see how far the influence for these titles reach
Bad map design is a serious understatement.
Bad textures, flat models, limited destruction, empty spaces, ugly and pointless spaces, lack of objects, flat 2D design, no interesting connections, no lanes, etc
BF1942 had 128 servers, it only had to have a server side tweak for it and it worked pretty well
This was freaking insane! Mad respect for how much work you put into this.
The work you put into this! Such a masterpiece! Thanks Nick, we really appreciate it. I’ll definitely be watching this more than once

I'm a relative latecomer to BF, having played Bad Company 2 but then not returning until I belatedly bought BF1 in 2018. Seeing the entire evolution of the series, with commentary from those who have both played the games and covered them professionally is a really valuable piece of documentary evidence. Great work, will definitely be checking out more of your videos and streams now.
1942 and its total conversion mods took way too much time from my young life. Desert Combat, Forgotten Hope, Galactic Conquest, Interstate 82.....
It felt like there was a total conversion for anything you could ever want in 1942. Even to this day, i've never seen a game with a modding community that was so varied and thorough. You could look up a list of dozens of mods, download a few GB file, drop it into the mods folder, and essentially have a brand new game to play.

My friend who lived on my street had BF2 on PC, I loved it. I only had a Playstation 2 so I got BF2 Modern Combat and put so many hours in, got a headset and joined my first clan hooking it up with an Ethernet Cable. I still talk so some of them gamers over 15 years later and went from PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5 and PC. Gaming community, I love you, it’s us, who make these games what they actually become. Moments and memories.
We appreciate your work man. No telling how much time went into this
Excellent documentary, first time in long years that I sat down and watched a long content piece completely. Truly shows how this franchise evolved and devolved during its lifetime. Thanks a lot for this video Nick!
Battlefield 2 came out at a time where I was too young to be allowed to play shooters. I remember downloading the demo copy of the game that I would be able to sneakily play without my parents ever knowing. I probably played that demo, with its one and only map being Gulf of Oman, for 4 years. 4 years my only experience with first person shooters was that demo (and some of the old Star Wars shooters). It was an amazing time, gaming was so novel to me back then. Good memories and I am glad to say I have been with this series ever since. Even with some low points for the series as of recently.
YES! Exact same for me. BF2 demo was amazing and I still find Gulf the best map ever.
Nice. I was only 2 years old at that time. Lmao. You guys got the good games. I'm stuck with TrashField 2042
I’ve never seen a RUclips channel create quality videos that are 4+ hours long. Man single handedly created a movie the length of Justice League.
Excellent documentary. As a series fan since Battlefield 1942, I appreciate your attention to detail.
Project Reality for BF2 still remains to this day one of my best gaming experiences ever.
I was in love with the bf series for years until 2011 when BF3 decided to broke my heart into a million pieces.
bf3 best bf
@@Trancestorr Only if it was your first bf, but it had to much things missing. First their removed stamina and you had no longer to managing you're valuable sprint burst to cross streets open field etc. plus jumping while sprinting made you ~5-10% faster which encourrated even more bunny hopping. That was very Problematic for a couple of reasons combined with the netcode if someone had a med to high latency. Second was the introduction of a kill cam from cod which had no place in the series. Third the removing of a Propper Squad leader and Commander, both role were imported and instead everyone could spawn and everyone in the same Squad which was very dump and made room clearing a nightmare and area denial nearly impossible because someone always slipped the net and 8 seconds later you had to deal with all of them again. Forth is the implementation of the silli Scope reflection even in the metro where no sunlight could be reflected even for Assault rifles if they use a magnification > times four. Fith was the game breaking change to Vehicles with unliimmted Supplies which caused that all Vehickes but especially Tanks didn't hold their best Rounds to be able to defend themself against another Armored target and just spammed 120mm round on anything that moved even is the probability to hit something was negative 10 percent. Sixth, they dumped the complex Flight model so that everyone became a as pilot over night which lowered the skill feeling which was very unfortunate but not the main problem, the main problem with this was that experienced pilots had their move set limited because they torn down the flight model so far that old cool but difficult manovers weren't possible anymore. And that's only the Stuff I could remember after 10 years but there were even more problems.
Edit:
+ They removed the Common Rose to quickly ask for Medic, Ammo, Rapair or Transport. Also spotting enemys was simplified so no more, oh I saw a sniper or tank around the corner 30 sec ago and I want to remember my team. So you aim at the last know location of the target and holding Q select the enemy type you want to shout out.
@@Phoenixstorm36 Yeah it was my first BF true, probably why none of those things bothered me
@@Trancestorr Thats understandable.
@@Phoenixstorm36 I played Bf2 recently and although most complaints are understandable, I just couldn't handle the running, it's like you don't have any lungs in that game
Battlefield 2 & 2142. Peak Battlefield. More & more staple features removed every iteration. It's sad.
Battlefield lost me when they decided to remove classes
Nick, you are just amazing man. What amount of work! I've been loving your history of videos since i found your channel, probably about 2 - 3 years ago.
Well, almost 2 hrs in. Happy new year, all the best to you. 🍻
Great work as always, that intro was really hype!
Not only is this a great documentary, but MAN you hit some sick clips
I'm 1/3rd into the video, and I have to say this... THAT is called content! The amount of work and passion behind the documentary is just incredible... As a die hard BF fan, thank You so much!
this was such a cool project! appreciate the amount of time put into it. absolutely sick intro too!
This Documentary is absolutely incredible! I can only imagine the massive effort that went into this. Throughout the more than 4h this documentary constantly had my full attention do it being interesting, engaging and packed with details from start to finish!
Great Work. Love that its not only a count of all the titles. The backstories and details mentioned by you and interview partners is amazing. Also the editing and choice of scenes chosen is A+. Great work dude. Cant imagine the work you put in there. Real good job. Deserves way more view and likes. Im going to share it where I can
DAM DAM DA DA DAM DAM DA DA DAM Dam DAAAAAM
BTW: BFBC2 and BF3 will always have a special heart in my Gamerlife. They were the peak of online shooter to me. Perfect balance, perfect mechanics, perfect design. After BF3 DICE unfortunatly took the way that brought us 2042 now.
Finally!! After so long, I can't wait to neglect my job, family and health for.. Haha, 4hrs and 20 mins..
Man has his priories right
420 ftw
Came back 9 months later and yup, this is a masterclass in video game documentaries still. Very pleasant to watch a second time❤️
Congratulations Nick. What an amazing work you have done!
I love that an entire chapter is dedicated to the Battlefield friends, they had such a huge positive impact on the francise
That took a lot of extra effort to pull off too in regards to obtaining permission to use. Glad I was able to include it as I loved putting that section together :)
@@Nick930 Thank you for all that effort, your passion really shows for that series. Sadly I think the golden era for Battlefield is behind us, and the devs lost their passion to top the past Battlefield games.
@@avatar94100 There's never a real end to a game franchise.
Call of Duty was considered beyond saving only a few years ago. But CODMW2019 totally transformed public opinion and the series has never been more popular, even if Cold War and Vanguard weren't nearly as strong.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater was beyond saving.. but Tony Hawk 1+2 sold more than any other game in the franchise! (And it better get a sequel.. because I freakin loved it)
And now Splinter Cell.. a game long thought to be totally dead.. is FINALLY getting a remake after all these years. Maybe it will bring THAT series back from the dead?
Battlefield can always make a comeback as it has done MANY times already. Bad Company 1 when it released seemed like the end of the "Golden Era" for battlefield before... then we got Battlefield 3 (and BadCo2) soon after.
@@Nick930 man I really hope you are right and they turn 2042 into an outstanding game just like they did with BF4. Don't let it die.
@@avatar94100 2042 has the core foundations for a game that can be redeemed and also improved, I got a feeling there’s a chance. Not necessarily a big chance, but we have a chance.
This documentary needs more views. It's so well done. Thank you for using so much of your time, and to your quests.
Can't thank enough how good this documentary was .
Thank you for this wonderful video .
Well done!!! I can't even imagine the work that went into this documentary
I’ve loved battlefield ever since the get go. I played the absolute crap out of BF3/4, Bad Company 1 and 2, I kinda skipped out on Hardline and BFV, but adored BF1. Seeing 2042 is actually the most disappointed I’ve ever been in a game, how they’ve gone so far from what makes these games what they are astounds me. It’s honestly tragic.
you missed out man, bf hardline is literally the best game i have ever played in my life.
2042 is so bad that it has less player numbers than BF1.
BF2042 is on 4k players on steam
BF1 is on 6k players on steam haha.
I personally loved BF1, yeah it didn't portray WW1 as authentic as Verdun may have done, but it was good enough, especially the campaign sold WW1 vibes.
I still don't understand how EA doesn't understand that they should just listen to what players want kekw
@@teaser6089 nobody cares. bf2042 is fictional, it doesnt have to be realistic
@@teaser6089 Batte field has never really had an identity, each game has been totally different and they never made the games to be completely serious. It even explains that in this video. They never stuck to the same game play style or load out.
@@chriscollins550 I've played many battlefield games and it totally has an identity, if you never noticed it's because you are blind.
4 hours Nick? 4 hours? When do you expect me to get my chores done? This is wonderful
Wow, dude this is so much great content. Huge amount of work, I'm impressed.
Man you have done really well with this. Love the work respect the grind. Fantastic watch
As an avid Battlefield fan I've been waiting forever for this video and it was absolutely worth the wait. Your attention to detail and research is second to none. Outstanding video!
