Today Grant released a video for the Perpetual Randomizer mod. It uses this system and randomizes every unit you unlock. Ah yes, my favorite Ctarsraft character, Rames Jaynor, holding the rank of Cebel Rommander.
This sounds more like a troll-difficulty, in contrast to the nightmare-difficulty you're working on. Honestly, heavy trolling could be fun, for example, your idea of giving the Dominion the Odin early. The kind of problem that you must distract/kite/ignore rather than beat. Or even some Twitch Trolls Grant-level of chaos, like the enemy blindly nuking, which can hurt itself. But these ideas would be much more luck-based than a difficult-but-fair challenge would be, so it's probably impossible to balance.

Giving Thor this early prolly is not troll enough. Replace Thor with odin, and give it reduced attack, HP and damage compared to real deal, and that would be fun. Later on give Protoss purifieer mothership on terrazine mission, carrier/tempests instead of void rays in The Dig, give dominion mercenary units in the train mission, let AI constantly build and flood the map with scourage in Mobeious Factor, replace normal zerg units with Starcraft 1 elite version in all char missions (120HP zergling, hunter killer, 800HP ultralisk or even omegalisk). I find this extremely interesting, especially as contrary to some of the 'challenges' from other campaign modifications, it's not just 'your units take +X% damage' or 'Lulz mercenary siege tanks everywhere' to make the map just a mindless grind. This offers challenge, sure, but in a smart way, and more importantly a unique one that forces a change from usual tactics without just making the game ultra difficult and forcing you to cheese the mission.

That was, in an almost mathematical sense, the perfect level of challenge for Liberation Day. It can be hard to tune difficulty for a mission in which you have literally one tool, marine, and also maybe some [unaffiliated civilian protestors]. Point is, as you've discussed before, early on in the campaign you're so limited it can get hard, especially if map-makers start pouring in a modern LOTV balance. But this mod is just hand-crafted perfection to contrast the current series, Brutal+, with random mutator chaos hell. Which is super fun to watch, but also can occasionally lead to literally unwinnable setups.

Legacy of the Void has honestly a lot of potential for custom campaigns
A map menu that scans and travels the stars?
Being able to get map abilities, and a customizable unit that you can actively change?
And then the normal dialogue and characters? Dude if people find a way to customize and/or change the sprites in there, this'll be golden (reason why I'm saying that, is due to the most recent bug Blizzard did to campaigns where all sprites and characters turned into metallic spheres inbplace of them. Meaning that you might be able to program rhem out?)

This really is awesome. I have no clue how modding works in SC2 but if this works, if you could start modding the Armory and Laboratory interfaces too, imagine how transformative that could be. Imagine if you could make it like HOTS - where you can de-select choices and get your money back rather than the choices being permanent. That would be awesome and would be a massive step forward both for playing WOL generally and for custom campaigns, making it far easier and more productive to experiment.
The ultimate dream, of course, would be a Master Archives mod for WOL... but I'm not sure if that one's possible.

1:30 i'm just going to take a guess right now, it's a concept Zero Punctuation put out there a long time ago, he was talking about a world of warcraft character some gnome mage, that starts with every ability everything, and they slowly unlevels you as you progress through the game, you get LESS tools, and it makes it harder as you lose your versatility. You slowly unlearn all of your abilities. What if in this campaign, you just like in his concept, slowly have to unchoose abilities/creatures/upgrades as you go backwards.
2:00 I would also like to see one of these mods. just let you make all of those choices you make on the ship, down on the ground instead, so you can make different descisions each mission. Research, Units, etc. even if it meant a third currency.

Random idea for a challenge for the 2nd mission I had:
The enemy builds bunkers to contain you behind the first attack wave, then they hammer the rebel base over the next few waves. If you want to save then you have to break the contain early, but if you're willing to sacrifice them you can build up a bigger army to deal with the bunkers. Really, I'd just like it if more missions involved the enemy actually building and expanding like a multi-player match rather than most just having pre-built bases and only sending attack waves.

Easily explained by him being a much better shot than a regular marine. StarCraft 2 doesn’t have “missing” as mechanic, but I don’t imagine every single shot a marine fires is on target if we translate to realism.

No Way! That's amazing! I have lost so many custom campaigns at the end of missions I'm so happy about there going to be able to be saves for some of them

I would love to watch this so much! And I can't wait to see some of the useless optional objectives actually give you rewards

What I really want to see is an ability to capture buildings of your own faction in the campaign.
And co-op mode stuff for commanders it suits.
And maybe return Hercules/Barracks, Cruiser/Factory, Terran Carrier/Spaceport functionality back for Terrans.
Looking at it, I'm quite a greedy bastard:(

i would love to see a player vs player campaign where one person controls the enemies and one controls the normal units, that could be awesome

Man, it is awesome how modding is getting on the next level.
Also, I love the point, that now you have to find a perfect early game, and not just saturating economics and then go army.

If the difficulty isn't too intense id watch this series for sure. i love learning new things about the game so i can play the campaign better/easier at my skill level without really devoting time and keyboard practice. even if its things about custom campaigns

oh I think it's awesome to see this in the Archives since I can't always tune into the streams and I'd love to see how much further that people can mod the vanilla Starcraft client
