- Continuing through our Lineage Journey, we reach an important point in history where we discover the birth of spiritualism and the state of the dead. In the late 1840's, the Fox sisters founded modern spiritualism. Another key figure to bring the biblical view of the state of man in death was George Storrs. Although he is not as well known, his theological contribution to Adventism was huge as he sought to answer the question - what happens when you die? His answers would go against the grain of popular Christian thought and modern spiritualism which was popularised by the Fox sisters.

Although the Fox sisters are dead and are still in the grave, today we see their fruits in Hollywood, Nollywood and others. May we remain faithful to the Bible and Jesus as our Pioneers. Thanks a lot LINEAGE, be blessed
I've noticed before that satan likes to create counterfeits and confusion as to draw the attention off of God's road and onto his own. God ALWAYS brings the light back however- our Lord always wins and I'm thankful for that! Blessings to all :)
I don't see any evidence in modern churches.. 🤔 But Spiritualism has alot of evidence from my experience.

@@robertj4157 many even in funerals pastors, leaders, members attempt to talk to the dead and receive messages that everything is alright that life is good in heaven etc. The prayer for foresight is important though we may not now see.

Such a important topic to understand clearly from studying the word of God as its often been misunderstood about the state of the dead & hell fire. Recently studied this as i too had a wrong idea about the topic.
I grew up in a Spiritualist home and started reading the Bible on my own at 16. Three-quarters of the way through it I realized I hadn't found the things I was being taught and assumed they weren't in the other quarter. (They weren't.) I searched for a church which taught from the Bible alone, without added man-made traditions. I became a Seventh-day Adventist Christian at age 22 because SDA beliefs are backed by the Bible. Learning about the state of the dead made a big difference in my life, as Spiritualism is rooted in the belief that the dead guide the living. I'm so thankful I know Jesus now.

It would be good to mention that George Storrs, though he made a significant impact on the Adventist movement, is also a very important link between Millerites and Bible Students. Later in his life he was a friend of young Charles T. Russell, and his theology greatly impacted Russels'. But Storrs' beliefs on the state of the dead and his eschatological beliefs significantly evolved (the wrong way) from 1840s to 1870s, when he made friends with Russell. And of course the main Bible Student group is known today as Jehovah's Witnesses. These links are very interesting.

Soul sleep is an impossible conclusion. “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” - 2 Corinthians 5:8 (NKJV) It doesn't get any plainer than that but when people are bent on promoting an idea there is no stopping them. I hasten to add that very often soul sleep goes hand in hand with justification by works and that is why Calvin opposed it in his essay psycopanachia, Soul Sleep.
The bible can be interpreted in opposing ways. There is 'soul sleep' which is the teaching that we all sleep till the second coming. But 1 Samuel 28.15 indicates that is not so. Then we have 'to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord' people, which is a more popular concept. This is backed up by many who have had NDEs and visited with their deceased relatives.

Many are called but few are chosen Matt 22:14 "means All People's are called to salvation but not all who received Christ will enter Paradise. Only the chosen ones who truly deny themselves & produce the fruit of the spirit & live in Spirit & truth, those Jesus chooses. A remnant shall be saved.

I know this is not a theological study per se, but you seem to have conflated or not clearly delineated the two issues about the state of the dead.
The first is Soul Sleep: That all the dead remain unconscious until they are resurrected in the Last Days and the second is the fire of God annihilating the
wicked after their resurrection, instead of eternal torture.
They do not necessarily have to go together.
There could be soul sleep and then eternal hellfire at resurrection as well as there could be souls of the dead being in an aware state now and then still being annihilated at the end.
Please read John 5:25-29 and John 6:38-44, 54.
No immortal soul here; Jesus makes it very plain that it is about RESURRECTION.

An aware disembodied soul is not immortal.

The soul and the person are the same thing.
The body becomes dysfunctional and dies but the person/soul can still be aware in another dimension.
Though the body is dead, you are still aware and wake up in another realm.
You are not your body.

Who has found IN the Bible that praying to God has to be done with closed eyes?
Who has found IN the Gods Word that praying to the Creator has to be done with bowed head?
Who can show IN the Holy Scripture that sending up a message to the Almighty should be done with fingers entwined?
If it is not IN the Bible, where does it come from?
If it is not IN the Bible, is it not time to stop it immediately?
If no Bible gives mankind those formalities is it not time to follow the Biblical instructions?

The birth of spiritualism has to have been born in the garden of Eden for it was there the serpent stated ye shall not surely die and man believed.
