Goofy ahh sponsor transition 💀
Speaking of the original watercolor art, did everyone see the big news regarding it? We were able to see proper scans of the Sugimori artwork for the very first time not too long back, and they're so gorgeous! The scans we've been looking at all this time were incredibly saturated and high contrast, but the new scans are much softer and the colors are so different! I'd recommend looking them up in case you haven't seen them! ^^
these came out while i was editing! they're so amazingly imperfect, they reaaaalllly make me wax nostalgic haha
@@SubjectivelyClaire wow, I didn't realize the video making process took such long
It would be great to have an updated version that addresses the differences between the scans.
@@SubjectivelyClaireis there a clean version of your final watercolors for each poster anywhere? I’d love to have mollucotta without the text in front of it or quetzalil behind it!
Words cannot express how much I appreciate that you have your brushes to the side, so we can actually know what brush you are using while drawing this. I almost never see artists do that and I really appreciate it.
i'm glad the layout makes sense! i wanted this to be sort of tutorial-y, so even though i don't usually paint with this PhotoShop set-up (i like less of my screen covered by menus), i wanted to make an extra effort to make things clear for this video.
i'm actually really glad you posted this, working on a college project about designing fakemon and i'm planning to draw in this watercolour style, this'll help a lot
When it comes to the 3 designs I have to say you absolutely nailed the feel and style. Though when it comes to Quetzalil and Porsite I think they missed the mark in trying to translate their designs over, though that's honestly a really tough task after all. They're good but feel as if there isn't enough linking them back to their original incarnations.
With Quetzalil I feel like what was lost was a lot of it's character, and it became a wholly new thing. With the third sketch at 8:14 I thought that the way the beak was done, carried through the head into feathers worked well. The 4th sketch at 8:33 was also really good with the head shape, though I can see how it might've been considered too complex.
Porsite was on the right track, and I think like what was said in the video the posing let it down. A front facing pose with it's tail raised up behind it's head could've represented it's musical origins, hinting at the shape of a note. Additionally maybe a closed mouth would've complimented the eyes better?
For Quetzalil, I miss the big beak. I would've kept that in the design, but I completely understand the rest of the choices making it simpler. Great stuff!
looks like a digimon
Interesting Idea🤔 eventho when I became a Pokemon fan the artworks didnt look like that anymore the artstyle still feels nostalgic to me
Same
We had that pokemon eye spy book in my school library. It was fantastic
You absolutely nailed it with the art style, the watercolors look beautiful and my favorite has to be Mallucotta. I also feel like Porsite and Quetzalil look a bit funny, but I think that changing the poses might help a little.
For Porsite, his new silhouette reminds me of kites, with an aerodinamic center and long tail(also the strong colors) so maybe make him confidently flying? With his head pointing to a direction and his tail swirling in the wind, maybe like a flying snake? If you put him in a downwards angle, it may also look like he's both slithering on the ground and flying, that sounds fun to me.
And Quetzalil, I know that the idea of the water starters looking sad/weak/scared is over used, but I think we can re-use Jack's pose and make him look sacred. Since he has floaties, it can look like he's scared of going in the deep end of the pool, or too afraid to dive in the ocean. It can be a good interpretation of a young kid who wants to explore and be adventurous, but it's too scared to dive in, even with help.
Or we can make it more like a bratty kid that is too proud to admit that is scared, make it more "tsundere" in a way, I think both could work.
Thank you to whomever read it all❤️❤️❤️
As much as I love everything jack does for the channel, I really appreciate seeing other artists on subjectively again, I really liked the concept of an art channel ran by a group, I hope to see more
Holy crap! I had no idea my comment would lead to a whole video! So glad to see a Clair video focused on these designs.
If Quetzalil was a Digimon, this is what it would look like
(If they said this in the video, sorry I wasn't able to watch with audio yet)
Yay!! Your fakemon designs from the 4 artists 1 description challenge on truegreen’s channel are some of my favorites ever made for that challenge! I didn’t know if we’d ever get to see you do something like that again, so im very happy to see you working in this style again
I missed her so much in these videos, I wished she could appear in more, she's a riot
Ooh you really nailed the old style! The watercolour and slightly jankier shapes work so well for it
Not too long ago sugimori had the og watercolor art revealed. Instead of the burnt low res pics we got see the beautiful art in all its subtly. I really love subjectively and their art. The fact that they made a region that feels like it caters to me 100%. Even a video like this. I’m so glad I found this channel on my art journey years ago 😭
Your idea of turning the bubbles into floaties feel exactly like something that would be done in old Pokémon and i LOVE the designs that you made for all three of these!
I honestly prefer the old Sugimori arts and designs for pokémon. Nowadays i've seen pokémon that i would classify as unfinished beta designs and really wish they took more inspirations from things in the past. It would've been cool if this was a detail in pokedexes between Scarlet and Violet. Have Scarlet's photos be Sugimori art and Violet be the photos.
I'd love if you made more Sugimori versions of these pokémon. It'd be so neast to see what they evolutions look like with this mentality behind them.
This actually makes me realise that a lot of my Fakemon designs are unconsciously inspired by Gen 1 art, too. The big dinosaur looking heads with manga eyes and vaguely pointy adornments is something I end up with a lot! It's what I grew up with and I adore the watercolour art style!
I love this idea so much and even more so love the designs part of me wants Jack to draw these designs as Modern Gen Staters and back amd forth in a Time warpy collaborative processes.😅
I think you really did an amazing job with these designs and im so glad that even though you have some hesitations, and are looking for feedback you still put the effort in and posted the video.
Im probably definitely projecting as this is an issue im working on myself.
But jack has helped me learn (and i say this with genuine love and senertiy) that its okay to post a piece of art/idea and change it later and change it again, and again. ❤
I always wanted my presentations to be perfect and my goal of perfection unmade my ability to practice.
These little guys are super adorable to me and while im sure some people can suggest improvements the same can also be said for every single pokemon design ever and what matters at the end of the day is presentation and if you want to make a new presentation of your ideas in the future then that is not only okay its amazing ❤
I hope this comment helps people because it is some what therapeutic to me 😅, and part of that process has been subjectively ❤
Thanks
Really glad to have you back. I miss the old days where all you guys would make videos just laughing and having a good time on camera.
These are absolutely gorgeous. I think you really nailed the style. If you'd like a suggestion for the water starter pose, perhaps yoinking a bit of goldeen's pose where they are swimming almost up into the camera might work really well.
I can slo really appreciate the newest and oldest art styles especially when put side-by-side. The old one though just brims with nostalgia and I think its due to a combination of the softer colours and simplistic designs. It just screams 90s character monster design at the time because Digimon also emulated that as well in early artwork.
Anyways, fantastic job, thank you for this~!
Oh my gosh they’re all adorable!! Such a good job adapting the old style into digital mediums! I love the pixel sprites too
The style is spot on! And the pixel art is also really cute and accurate! Lovely stuff
The water splotches on green are so eye-pleasing...
This looks nice and cute I would love to try the style. I love the mazah region. Love it. Thanks for teaching the water Color style digital. Water color is my favourite medium to work with. The way u worked dark to light reminds me more of gouache.
The pixel art in particular nailed it.
Very good execution on the watercolor look. It's crazy to see that done digitally.
They look very cute. i would love to see a game boy style game with these design
Love the additional pixel art at the end! I would definitely watch a series on reimagining pokémon in the older (and newer also) style
These were so good! I'm also obsessed the early Sugimori watercolor style so it was great to see these starters reimagined with this unique style. I would love to see this series continued, hopefully in the middle or final evolutions to the starters! It would be cool to see how these beta versions evolve in their own unique way. Great video!
Honestly, this is a really neat idea. I would love to see some more fakemon, both the Subjectively Mazah designs and maybe even some new designs, done in the old style.
I wish you had kept a gem on Quetzlil. The adornment could be represented by the Dragonair look. I also miss the beak.
I really like these mazah videos that take the art in another direction. id really recommend looking into cobblemon, its a pokemon in minecraft mod thats artstyle is limited to what is expected of minecraft and has really simple addon support and tools. ive had a lot of fun modeling custom mons and it doesnt take too much skill because its just all cubes
i love the old ken sugimori gen 1 art style, and i love how these are rendered. the watercolor texture and bright white paper highlights are so pretty. i think if i still drew as much as i did, i'd want to take inspiration from the gen 1 art style's shading and highlighting.
something interesting i noted from the pokemon blue art set, specifically with venomoth, is how transparency is rendered and how i think it might've looked really neat with porsite's bubbles perhaps.
one of the sketches of quetzalil also reminded me of a digimon which i found through a bit of wiki searching called hououmon. quetzalil's fire rendering is also really pretty, it looks cool & accurate
You weren't kidding about Patamon with Quetzalil, that face really gives me digimon vibes
This is my new favorite Claire video. Great work and lovely narration!
Would love to see you do this with their evolutions as well. It would probably present a unique challenge trying to make a more complex design while still working within Gen 1's limitations
whatever was going on at 8:45 was the best quetzalil imo
I really wanna try out digital watercolour art one day too. But I'm not sure if I'm patient enough.
Oh also I kinda prefer this version of Mollucada. Dont get me wrong I like the original one too but the gardensnail inspiration fell a bit flat for my taste (they are my favorite animals and I like the typical snail shape a lot. But that's just personal taste). So I prefer having a design that has no snail elements over one that has some but not really strong ones 🙈
LOVE LOVE LOVE this video! Such a fun and refreshing theme. Great work explaining and executing everything. Really happy to see more of your work. Would be happy to see more renditions like these.
I really love this style. It's definitely something that needs to be preserved and appreciated and you do a fine job of it. Would love to see more of this
I love you jack, but it's definitely refreshing seeing claire and her work again :)
I definitely want to see the entire evolutionary line with this style
Also i think the problem with the dolphin pokemon(i forgot the name sorry lol) is the proportions really, it resembles a fish abit too much imo with the narrow tail and short face
I've been hoping for another member of the Subjectively crew to pop a video up! Everyone is great, you all bring your own unique talents to the table.
I would adore more videos redesigning newer Pokémon (fan and/or official) in the Gen 1 style. Always such a neat transition. ✨
Two of these are absolutely awesome!!!
One is toy story Sid creation involving a garden worm haha
It's neat seeing the differences in design-philosophy!
I may prefer aspects of the newer designs, but in some cases, a more vague-personality design works, like Raichu.
For the fire dude the beak is definitely the thing thats missing, outher than that its really good
(I don't remember the names of the fakemons so I will be referring to them in other ways, sorry ~~)
I think an important thing to keep in mind while designing as if it was an old pokemon must be thinking of the pixel art first and how do you make a strong pose for the battle sprite, and how you make an specific element outstand more than the rest, like the pokemon spider's smiling face from gen 2, the pot fake mom fits perfectly but I think the Quetzalcoatl one could be improved only in the head wings by making them a little bit bigger and making a bigger focus on them.
This is just what I think, I don't know if anything of what I said is right but that's what I thought, anyway, you did an excellent work!
It would be great to do a pt2 of this series like how Pokémon has many regions near eachother making it more wider and interesting to see the different cultures with a Pokémon trainer like ash travelling across each trying to become the best of each region
Absolutely adored this Mazah Region project *and* the assorted Mermay artwork and storylines
This channel inspired me to start my own Fakemon art project, so a big thank you for giving me the motivation to learn how to draw Pokemon, and keep being awesome!!
This is such a cool concept I really hope we get to see more Mazah Pokémon in this style, even if just to study your incredible watercolor mimicry some more :) Porsite’s tail rendering was so cool I haven’t been that stunned by an artwork in ages
Not gonna lie the second one feels more digimon to me, but the watercolor style is gorgeous on all of these. Kudos!
Cute designs! i think it would be really cool if you could get these guys in the mazah game, like maybe after you beat the main story you get them as gift
Quetzalil still feels like its falling more in the digimon realm than pokemon, maybe further simplifying the ear wings into feathers? Something in the line of Pigeoto's tail? Love all of them none the less though!
I think the floaty bubbles is a legit great idea and feels like an improvement on the original concept IMO.
WE MISSED YOU CLAIRE!! And i never knew i needed to see you do a solo OG fakemon video, but in hindsight it only makes so much sense! I really hope this becomes a series itself 😭
I think the Quetzalil sketch I like the most is the short and stout one that looks a bit like a chocobo. I think the tiny body left a lot of design space for a big beak, and mixed the cape and feathered adornments from the original design. The missing beak on the final design really removes the high class and avian feel that makes the original design so appealing. I'm not entirely sure how you could adapt the chocobo-esque design to include more serpentine traits, maybe something like a snake tail wrapping around in front of the body could imply that this plump lil body tapers off like a snakes.
These are awesome, but Molacotta is definitely my favourite of these beta designs.
Quetzelil needs his beak and the wings maybe stretched out upwards part of his personality in design was a sense of superiority the pose should be captured from a lower position as if he is stretching himself upwards as to look down on others
they are all so cute!! I really loved it, it would be cool to see the other stages of the starters done in this style
Just when i thought the starters couldn't get more iconic- 🌟
Amazing work!!
If you wanted to change up quetzalil maybe make the eyes for quetzalil more narrow or perhaps more sleepy, and the beak a little longer to make it look less like charmander’s head?
But honestly I think all three look amazing!!!
The pool floaties on Porsite are SO CUTE! Nothing against the original Mazah dex but I think I actually kinda like this one more
So much more charm in the 90s pokemon art style. This is why original Gen2 is still my favorite.
These renders look so good! Makes me really want to do some watercolor paintings again…
Oh my god, I totally had that Let’s Find Pokemon book growing up! I probably still have it somewhere
Well, I wouldn't call the old art style "clunky" or Patamon "ugly cute". It's just cute, it's one of the few just cute digimon from that era.
I don't think I understand your fire starter's head shape. I really like the pot idea. I think they're all still a little too bright and complex for gen one. Maybe they'd work for gen 2 though.
My personal opinion on monster designs are that they should all be recognizable as a tiny sprite. If it's too complex to do that then I'd call that design overcomplicated. I like instant logo like recognition, a quick and powerful connection to a design. It's why I still think Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and Lapras are such strong designs. They're not only recognizable but they're not boring (like say, Seel). A lot of modern pokemon aren't boring, but they sure are too much sometimes. It's harder to connect with them.
I didn’t think I could possibly find a video like this, but here I am!
These turned out so lovely! I've learned so much today from you=) Thank you for this video=)
Its so good to see claire again, honestly I would love to see the version of the maza region that has both Jack and Claire's designs 😅
Speaking of I'd love the subjectively crew and the game dev crew submit some pokemon ideas collaboration is so cool ❤
Love that sheep sweater!
It's hilarious how everyone says that Pokemon had simpler designs in Gen 1. I'm just glancing sarcastically at Gyarados, Nidoking and queen, Rhydon, Arcanine, and the like.
There are plenty of Gen 1 Pokemon with dark/black in their original art.
i feel like the grass starter is the closested in feel. the charmeleon style head on the fire starter gives it almost a digimon feel over pokemon. i feel like maybe going in a direction closer to mankey's style choses might fix it a bit. sharper lines and rougher expressions and also we need the beak. For the water starter it feels a bit to long for the roundness that first forms have. its almost second stage like in my opinion, you mentioned seal as an inspiration, maybe take from the sprite art that has them curling on itself in a round almost bubble shape hiding behind its tail to get that rounded and more shy look and feel out of it. the art and skills you shown were amazing dont get me wrong, but i feel like these changes could help make them feel more right.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought they were your guys legit beta designs
Quetzelil’s head feels disjointed and separate from the rest of the body. I don’t know how to fix it without making it red dragonair. Love the others and the colors on all of them are perfect and so nostalgic. 😊
I love this. It looks just like real watercolor! amazing work!
I know the Mazah Region will soon be coming to a close so i'd like to give a suggestion before it ends: an owl pokémon based off of thr La Lechuza lullaby, maybe Flying/Ghost or Flying/Fairy
This was so cute! I'd love to see the process for some of the modern (real) pokemon as well!
I love them! I want to see the whole evolution line of the starters in this style D:
i think being unsure about the design is fine and might work best for gen 1 designs since a lot of the gen 1 designs feel kind of chaotic and random, like the random horns on everything lol
perfectly weird and "who knows what this is!"
didnt know bulbasaur was supposed to be based off a frog (???) or a toad (????????) until a couple years ago just knew it was a cute little guy
i genuinely prefered the first sketch with the little flame on the head, i dont know why but that felt prime gen 1 design, i don't think the finalized design hit it off that well but i don't exactly know how to pinpoint why, although as you said; you compared it to patamon, in which it does look a little too much like a digimon than a pokemon.
I am going to use this digital water color technique for the next time i tackle yoshistaka amano stye !
I MUCH prefer these designs! excellent work!
Sooo cuuuuteee!!! I need to see the evolutions
the watercolor technique was absolutely fantastic. The Grass starter was excellent, totally nailed it however the fire starter was okay but I didn't think it represented the original design well.
I’d love to see this done with all the starters final evos
IMO , I like the fire chicken ones alil more for the air of the fakemon . Maybe just different head shapes could have helped , either or your still doing awesome .
I’d love to see this as a little mini series were Clair does the the evolved forms too
These are so super fun, I'm a huge fan of "Beta" designs
Quetzel , you could use some different Pokémon for reference. Dratini is my favourite but Horsea, Magbi, Snubulls neck dress could have been good references. I know you don’t want copy but we’d be okay with direct reference, they’re beta, we get they got changed for a reason
Yoooo these illustrations are fire 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome job, the watercolor is great and the sprites are spot on
For quetzalil, I feel like angular eyes (like the reference pokemon you were using had) would have been a truer translation from its modern form than the round eyes you used
Wonderful video, thank you Claire!
(Also my apologies if Claire is spelled without the ‘e’-I just saw another comment spell it “Clair” so I’m not sure)
Clair is back!!❤
Looks great
I believe these feel a bit more gen 2 than they do gen 1, that being said they’re still amazing. I yhink porsite’s pose, something kind of opposed to Quetzalil’s pose could work? Head dipping down and away from the viewer while the body forms a gentle crescent facing right
My issue with the Quetzalil one is the head, it feels too much like charmander.
i really feel like the beak is just missing, it's more lizard then bird, and i don't think it's fitting for them
this idea is AWESOME omg, you were a perfect candidate!!! so excited for this video!!!
I like them but the fire starter I would have done it slightly diffrent and the water starter would have a more dolphin looking tail fin but you did a great job
Molucata and Porsite designs seem solid but again the implied personality seems somewhat absent Molucata being timid/shy and Porsite being near oblivious
If this were an official Poké game, I'd definitely pick Molacotta ❤ The designs translated well to Pixel too~
Love that art book!
