- I recently filmed a new lesson with Carter McLean and had to share it with you. The lesson discusses how to improve your drumming feel, which is an area I think ALL drummers need to work on.
Carter is the full-time drummer for the hit Broadway musical, The Lion King. He also has many more credits to him name that give him a unique perspective that I know you will appreciate.

Cart McLean's playing is the epitome of buttery drumming. He just slides in and and out seamlessly between tempo changes and hits those bridges in between just right. Great reference for any drummer looking to groove the right way.
Carter's philosophy about music and drumming is spot on. He has an organic feel, crafty fills, and said himself "the music tells you what to play." This is the way to be if you want more work. Great job!
the music tells you what to play - this is true to a certain degree since music open to interpretation and different approaches.
This is one of the only Drumeo sessions that I come back consistently and watch. So turnt.
Thanks!
same here
Cozmic Mojo same here. best lesson.
Same.
yes, it has something 'sacred' , Carter gives some kind of 'rest ' to his playing, very relaxing to watch, maybe the 'Bob Ross' of drumming.
one of the most underrated drummer actually. Deserves so much more attention, been following him on instagram for a long long time, constantly giving advice, and damn the touchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh he has, jeez man. Lurking to sound like him for years. All hail Carter !
raphael aurand thank you!!!
my pleasure sir!

So is the r clamp mounted to the bass drum?
How can I get the tom mount ? I have the same kit in bop configuration
Take my $$$ Ron !
I ❤️your snares
The badge looks like 60,s Camco!!
Never heard of this drummer before the lesson and at the end he became one of my favorite drummers. One of the best drumeo lessons to date
Thanks Josh appreciate it👍🏻
i didnt knew him either but this lesson was dope. also it was cool to see one of the Lion King drummers :)
+Josh Ballew Same here Josh. My style is extremely similar to Carter's, though he has a little bit more finesse! I am really enjoying checking all the rest of his videos out
Awesome Josh! People can really relate to lessons like this rather then anything super technical. Agreed! superb lesson.
You're welcome...
He makes it all look so simple, which in theory is, but what can't be taught is his magic touch. His feel is so unique and infectious. So relaxed as well. His performances are so fresh and inspiring. Of course Dunnett drums also don't hurt matters. Gotta hand it to Drumeo as well for providing this lesson and for the incredible recorded sound.
Jan Patrick Lucas thank you
Touch can be taught
Fellow Kerbdog fan cool
It's amazing to listen to Carter listen to talk about the entire purpose of playing the drumset.....and how its original purpose was to play music in a band. Yet, RUclips if full of kids who have no clue as to what that means. Their whole goal, and ONLY goal, is to setup a GoPro and blow the world away with their chops. And, wouldn't you know it....they're getting endorsements, and a pay check, to do just that. Hence why we don't get the quality of music today we got in the 70's and 80's. The sheer technical ability to play, or the better word would be "copy" something (just doing it louder, or faster) S music to these kids.... It's incredibly refreshing to hear Carter talk about that. And, at his age, it's incredibly unique.
i think this would be the perfect time to have him back. different gear and all. as soon as ya'll can, please have him back!!!
Carter's one of my favorite drummers I follow. Big beautiful cymbals, amazing tuning, Dunnett/George Way drums, and perfect groove and feel. So glad you guys featured him!
Like Benny Greb, Carter expands what’s possible on drums, and uniquely so, with his own voice, and musicality to the fore - which is why these players stand out for me. Just incredible inspiration.
Bassist here. If every drummer would understand how good this guy is, there would be happier bassplayers on the planet.
This guy catapults every band into the pocket.
Carter is one of my new favorite drummers. Just saw him open for Snarky Puppy with Charlie Hunter. Blown away.
This guy is the most relaxed drummer on the planet,so smooth and flowing just a treat to hear him
This guy is the master of feel. I've been following Carter for years. I think he's the new Gadd, he's that good.
He's way better than Gadd
I just don't know what to say other than thank you Carter and Jared!
Absolutely love the feel in that opening track
So much low end in the bass drum, I love it! One of the few players on par with Benny Greb in terms of dynamics and musicality in my opinion.
This guy has great hands, really inspiring to watch him...
Add this to the list of lessons that I will remember forever. Seriously underrated drummer who is killing everything he does. Incredible. I keep coming back for more and more.
Carter changes his appearance so much that I was saving his videos without realizing he was the same person. So I guess Carter is three of my favorite drummers. Love this and all of his videos, especially the ride cymbal video. He makes them all sound beautiful.
Totally in love with sound of these drums. Carter's playing has astounding feel and touch.
+MusicCameraActionSG Thanks so much!
He seems to sound pretty much the same sort of good on every kit.
Love how Carter even makes the trashy crash sound musical - like while all 4 limbs are doing their thing physically, his brain is running a dynamic equalizer to keep all the volumes in check... Less is truly so much more for Clean Strokes McClean
both snare sounds AWESOME!
This is awesome to see him talk about Lion King because Tommy Igoe talks about the exact same shuffle feel in his lesson showcase
Back here again. What a great lesson. One of the best drummers I’ve heard in my life
Beautiful sounding kit, yea would like to see the 80/20 drummer on drumeo
I love that he gives the drums a voice, they really speak and he really uses everything with dynamics and tact. Great hands and intelligent approach. great drumming!! gotta have him back again.
+Andres Restrepo Kind words. Thank you.
This guys was one of the easiest to understand and the way he played made sense to me. Awesome lesson!
Man this snare sound is giving me goosebumps WOAHHHHH. My man.
Geez man! I found myself banging my hands all around in time with you. This is infectious and amazing. Thanks. 👍☮️🌞🥁💖
How come I've missed this one for four years?! Unreal..it was one of the best of the best of all drumeo videos!
Found this guy's channel totally by accident (algorithmident) on YT and now he's one of my favourite players. Lovely feel, insane left hand and comes across as a thoroughly nice chap.
I'm not even a drummer and I've learned a lot from this video. Hopefully he comes back again, he's a great musician and a really humble guy. I'd love to learn more from him.
Very nice groove drummer with a great touch and feel!! Bring him back very soon!!
This is top class! This Spring I randomly stumbled upon mr. McLeans videos here on RUclips, and I was blown away. His sound is exactly what I have been looking for in a drum set and his playing (especially when it comes to feel and touch) is just amazing. Thanks a lot for a very good lesson. I will try and put it to use :-)
What a great and humble drummer you are Carter. Nice to see a vid about 'feel' for a change. Very underrated. I love how you big up playing quiet, slowing down and use of space. Dynamics are so important.
Excellent vid. Jared, youre a great player/dude too. No egos on this channel. I love it.
Just tuned into this fella and he's my new Drum hero....fantastic feel makes you want to get behind your kit and practice...thanks Carter your my go to inspiration
I would like to suggest the great Yoni Madar as a guest on Drumeo. Who?! Just check him out, a very versatile, very musical drummer who constantly shares his knowledge!
Carter's most important comment referred to listening. I've always tried to listen to the music being played and to fit in as best I can. I am no way as inventive as Carter but I've definitely learned some cool stuff from him. Thanks to Drumeo for presenting this stellar musician.
Thanks for the video. Love the kit! Self-taught drummer gives many of us hope!
Carter is MONSTER, such amazing technique, feel, groove and musicality! 😎
17:14 - "Killing in the Name"
Excellent lesson guys. Been watching Carter for a few years and he has such a cool voice on the drums. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Man, love this lesson! Carter makes these drums sound SO good. Love the 2 snares especially that left side.
Great lesson this guy makes not only want to play drums but love playing drums! Thanks!!!
This cat has a beautiful sound and feel. Great video lesson and a killer drummer! Loved it!
He is the best. I could still hear the song all the way through the solo
Carter, thanks for the awesome lesson! Can't wait to incorporate some of your tips into my practices.
I came across your drum video's on (RUclips), and really enjoy watching them.... I dig your style. Thanks Drumeo as well for making this lesson happen!
-Paulo
+Paulo Avila Thanks so much Paulo!
I believe what Carter has is referred to as incredible technique. 👍
No way! you guys got Carter. amazing, appreciate it
very very delicious chopfree lesson about how to personalize your drumming awakening feelings into the process of individual expression. Helpful and enriching. it changed my way of drumming by daring to review not only rhythms but rudiments as well which now become like a lively breathing. Thanks very much. I enjoy.
Great Lesson and Drumming from Carter Mclean. Thanks Drumeo for all you do!!
Always gets a great snare sound…
Must be a top tuner..
My favourite drummer during last two years already. And I have to listen only drums solo on his channel. Sound crazy. Other instruments just no needs
This has to be the best sounding bass drum Ive EVER heard.
Great lesson, Carter....awesome drumming! Echoes of Jeff Porcaro. Thanks, Jared!
This guy is awesome.that bass drum sound is crazy !
Carter! You are fast becoming one of my top favorite drummers ! Keep it up .. ya got that rhythm “ thing” . I cant remember who said to “walk “ in rythym, cobham, weckyl ,somebody did , you probably do .. love your snare demos too , you must sell thousands of drums for ludwig! Anyway- thank you Carter , enjoy your success man! It’s well earned!
Stay kool🥁 Mr.Tom
It's so awesome that you bring all these amazing drummers to give lessons!
Wow, great sounding set, these opening grooves are fantastic
Hey Carter thanks a lot for lesson, and thanks to Jared and Drumeo, your playing blowed me away, and the fact that you said you known mark mclean very well and you like his playing, means that we are almost in the same page when it come to musicals preferences, because the way you play and considering that mark lesson both of them, are by far my favourites in Drumeo, now i add yours, will definitelly follow your stuff in face and youtube. Thanks @carter mclean
Dude I been a carter fan for a while how am I just now finding out he was on drumeo
34:23 he starts doing slow doubles on the floor tom, and as he ramps up the tempo you can really see his wrist uses a gentle and relaxed whip motion on the first stroke, and opens his fingers for the rebound. Then his fingers snap the bejesus out of that second stroke. That's the recipe for consistent and articulate doubles on every surface. Wrist and fingers in harmony.
those ghost notes are so lovely during the intro
Best floor toms in the history of man, drums & universe. I just keep coming back to hear this instrument from heaven :p
I remember when I met Carter after a show in Philly. Such a great dude.
Phenomenal lesson bro! I'm gonna work on these, def one of my fav drumeos so far
Excellent drummer and excellent teacher .
Wonderful performance. So musical! What feel! 👍🏻
Carter on drumeo???? Yes!!!!!!❤️😎. He’s thee best drummer in the world. IMO.
The guy has serious dynamics!
What a great drummer. Thinking in phrasing instead of licks happens organically over the years and I know why he can't explain exactly how he puts a fill together.
Great drummer, like Adam Deitch a master of groove, get him on drumeo also would be very informative!
“The music tells you what to do”
Thank you for saying that.
And now i want to stack tambourines on all my cymbals in superior drummer 3😂😂😅😅, I’m just starting this lesson and allready love it, just when I think I’ve seen every lesson that’s relevant to me I find new ones! Feel is really something I’m interested in , I know I got it but to me it depends so much on your day , gonna be interesting to hear what he has to say!
Love the tone of his bass drum
You're self taught i can believe it !!! Just motivate me a lot more ! Thanks !
Great sounding drum kit and smooth groovin' DRUMMING.
Love how they’re talking and in the middle you hear “brrrrrrwhap” because Carter is messing with the snares 😂😂
It was so inspiring to see your techniques applied to actual working situations. I like your unique style and different ideas; very refreshing. What a great guest!...thanks-
what a kit..what an episode..thanks jared and Mclean
Love the feel and playing/cymbal sounds!
Brilliant. Fabulous drummer. Interesting lesson.
Checked Carter’s channel and realized...I’ve been there! Off course! Remember thinking that he really needed to have a lesson with u, this was a great lesson, I like lessons like this because Carter is much like me, I am part self-taught and also through stuff like this, but yeah I learn a lot through just listening and jamming, I have dyscalcully it’s the dyslexia in math so notes are just impossible for me so I learn best when I just listen to music or teachers says hit this! 😅 I wish there were notations for us out there😅 like you know that looks like drum notation for kindergarten, like pics of each drum placed where you hit it in the song 😅 so yeah, I learn best by listening or if it’s really visual like videos, but would be great if I could read music as well 😅😅
There was so many great tips here , definitely gonna rewatch it ! The play quiet-part is what makes jazz so great to me, especially if we talk big band stuff, if you play really silent and you suddenly come in with a crash or a snare, that’s a really cool and powerful move if done right! This lesson definitely inspired me! Also cool that you based a lot of it on kick and snare, learning on my iPad by myself, that was the first beat I really learned well , it sounds unimpressive but beside the dyscalculi , my coordination is really bad so even learning it on iPad with 10 fingers to use I worked a long time to master that but when I did or when I got into the feel of it, I’m sure I learned it but doing it yourself it doesn’t feel like learning, at least not to me, I just found the feel and got deep into it and I could build from there, like toms and cymbals, lost it a bit now though since I got the dd65 and need to upgrade its kick and hihat pedals..
One of my favorite DRUMEO videos; Carter SWINGS!!! -eski in Acapulco
that great touch and great sound on this drummer!!!!
The typical Jared, "yeh, that's cool man"
There's an extra 16th note triplet in the fill at 32:35 AND at 32:45, in case you felt like your mind was being boggled.
This is great man..Sound, playing and advice..
Oh my god! +carter mclean. You've just funk my brain out! I'm your fan from now! Thanks so much for your drumming, especially your way of touching drums. =)
i've been playing drums for 16 years, and no matter how complicated or simple I play, I still add phrasing without using fills.
1st time I hear of Carter! Great feel on the drums! Cheers!
My new fave drummer great sound feel touch👍👍👍
I really like this video and and Carter's performance. Drumeo is overdue to have Carter back.
The conversation at about 35:10 - "so in real time, your brain is just telling your body...." I taught myself to play, never had a lesson, never read a single note of drum music off charts. Just feeling the stuff is the only way I know how to do anything! It's funny to hear someone who's WAY better than me seem a little incredulous about that kind of playing.
so solid.
great drumming, very musical.
This is GREAT! Very good lesson.
Hey Carter! The groove is in the house! Awesome opening.
Yep best guest so far, possibly Larnell Lewis is up there with him.
