  • Very RARE shootout!
    See how these two compare in a full mix and outside of a mix. I also compare the clean channels.

    Great video! FWIW, the sounds in this video are very similar to what I'm getting with my Purple Nightmare. It's a crazy good amplifier, I'm very happy with mine. Marek's really great to work with, too!

    Wow....the clean channel at the 15:49 when switching back to the Badlander was like taking a pair of massive old school Cerwin Vega 3 way home speakers and unplugging the woofers. I now have it narrowed down to the Splawn Nitro and the Driftwood. Thank you for this EXCELLENT evaluation!

    seems like unboosted the badlander does a better job in a mix because the soundguy won't have to cut hardly anything at all while the Driftwood has so much low end anything below 80hz will be cut anyway and a crowd is not going to notice what you hear alone at home.

    Completely agree about the nightmare having more texture and frequency and I just got Badlander a few months ago. Not sure if you saw Tremonti's MT100 but damn that thing looks and sounds incredible I think it's going to the next big Amp.

    will you compare the nightmare to the revv?

  • @jb_50w78
    @jb_50w78 3 года назад +1

    This is a really good comparison and you did a great job with it. I can tell you put a lot of work into the video and it really shows the differences between the amps well. To my ears, I can tell that the purple nightmare has more low end than the Badlander. Honestly, to me, the purple nightmare sounded a lot more muddy without the overdrive and the Badlander sounded a lot tighter and more focused with a little more clarity. I could hear that even with the overdrive for rhythm and leads. Even before I saw the end of the video I was going to comment that the purple nightmare sounds more similar to the dual rectifier and I think you would hear similar differences when comparing the Badlander to the dual rectifier. I cannot really say which is better, they are just two different tastes. I think I enjoy the tighter focused sound of the Badlander, but for rhythm parts the big low end of the purple nightmare could work very well.
    It is interesting that the purple nightmare was really inspired by the dual rectifier, and Driftwood and Mesa basically expanded on that design in different ways to make more modern sounding amps.
    To me I still like the Badlander a lot and I actually like that focused sound, but it seems that you definitely like bigger sounding low end frequencies (I know you like 2x12 cabs best and I think they have bigger low end). In the end it is just different tastes. That’s why you need to have different amps for different sounds!!
    By the way, the power tubes make a difference in the Badlander. With 6L6 it sounds more balanced and less bright especially on the clean channel. You get a little fuller sound on clean with the 6L6 and leads sound more fluid with high gain. I think Mesa went with the EL34 to get that more focused and tight sound but it sounds good with 6L6 too.

      Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate this a lot.
      Yes, I put a lot of time and effort into this video. I hope everyone enjoys it.
      I had some audio issues and I had to re shoot some of the parts many times to get them right. It was very frustrating at times.
      Also, thank you for your detailed comments and insight. When I get a chance, I'm going to switch my Badlander to 6L6 tubes and see what it sounds like. Cheers!

    • @jb_50w78
      @jb_50w78 3 года назад

      @@TONEWARSgearshow yeah you should try 6L6 in the Badlander when you have the chance. There aren’t too many good videos on it except for Ola’s. I think you could do a great video on it. Honestly you have the best guitar channel and your amp review and shootout videos are much better than many others.
      You’d have to be scientific about it and make sure everything stays the same though. One good thing about Mesa is that you don’t have to adjust the bias, you can just swap tubes and you just have to change the switch from EL34 to 6L6 in the back.
      (EL34s use a much higher bias current that could damage 6L6 tubes and possibly the amp when the tubes fail).

    Metal dude seems bent on selling to his audience the idea that the Nightmare is so much superior to the Badlander; it's highly annoying at times, even if done for a good, noble cause.
    I liked both amps, don't think any of them is that superior to the other (at all); prefer the Badlander (has more bite), the Nightmare's tone is fuller (agree).
