I'm so proud of Ke Huy Quan for finally winning his first Oscar, after struggling to find work. 2022 is the year of the comeback, both for him and Brendan Fraser.
We call people stars because of their ego and talent and certain qualities - but he is a star because of the LIGHT he has along with his talent. He is so pure. He is a beautiful person.
I will watch anything KE is in. He brings everything to his role, he doesn’t leave anything out, he brings his entire soul and pours his every being on screen. So much heart, rawness, and authenticity from this gentle soul. This man, his life struggles and now his success makes him a hero to me. Ke is what Hollywood, what America needs. Learning about his story gives me hope and even greater appreciation for him. He went through so much hardship and yet is still so full of love, light, positivity, enthusiasm, gratitude, and humility. I would have been hardened but Ke never gave up and it finally paid off! He has the spirit of that loving exuberant boy on the set of his first film, that joy never left him. Ke is what you call an inspiration!
Is anyone else mourning the years of Ke in leading man roles that we were all robbed of? He seems genuinely kind and talented but my god, he's incredibly handsome too.
It is more luck than skill though and I say that as no disrespect to him. The Indiana Jones movie only wanted an Asian actor for his part. The story of how he got the part was more lucky than this Oscar win. For a white American actor to get the same equivalent in Vietnam, China ,Malaysia or Japan it would still be really hard for them to want to give that award out over every really great oriental actors who never won yet either. He is a good actor but obviously multiple Asian actors could have done his roles really well also. He seems like such a genuine nice person though it means more it was him.
@@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants to attribute anyone's achievements to luck when you weren't there and/or don't know what happened, is in fact low. If you heard the story, he tagged along with his brother who was auditioning, along with many other Asian boys. He was "coaching" his older brother behind the camera. Steven Spielberg saw this and asked him if he wanted to try a take. And he did. Here we are today. So two big things happened in this man's life and you say both of them were a happenstance of luck. Low and hating.
@@TheRebellefleur27 It is hilarious you use that story which I already knew which that story in itself is like Mega Millions lucky which was completely unrelated to his acting ability or skills. #1. A major motion picture is in your area hiring for a major role that he happens to live near #2. They are only hiring an Asian actor for this part #3. His brother wants to tryout and he goes to help him and not to tryout #4. He gets asked to tryout for the part #5. Out of all the people they could pick they pick you The reason why this is still luck is every great actor or actress there is always another one who would do a great job so it still takes luck to get the part and especially did for him at that time. Obviously they could have hired another good Asian actor to play Shorty. ----------------------------------------------------------------- You think his good acting skills made all 5 of those come true? I am not hating I am being honest which is something you should try more. He is a good actor and I have never said otherwise. I remember there were Asians who were very offended by his character in the Goonies. They said his accent and that he cant speak english properly should have been the reason he did not get that part. They said the character he played was a negative stereotype. I liked his acting as Data and I did not have an issue with his accent. He was great in it. They wanted an Asian with an American accent to get the part. There was other things they complained about also. You think a white actor in Vietnam or Malaysia or China is going to have as many acting job opportunities? You would need luck and a lot more of it than an Asian actor needs there. That is realistic and not hating.
@@hienlethai3979 Sadly, I have not seen the whole movie I watched the first 15 mins and I had to leave unrelated to the movie. I will see it though for sure. Lou Dimond Phillips is half Filipino. He is a good actor. You would need an asian man 50 to 65 looking? for the part. Ken Watanabe but some might not believe he is Chinese. He is good in every movie I have seen. Daniel Dae Kim same thing. Jason Scott Lee would have been great too and can do a convincing Chinese accent. I probably could name more but those 4 would be good. You disagree?
When Ke won, I felt like "WE" all won together... for real. All of those who loved and supported KE in the roles he had in past decades and the quality of acting he represented Then and Now. He was phenomenal in EEAAO. I can't believe he couldn't get any roles for 30+ years in Hollywood and it took an INDIE movie for him to get recognition. Will forever know him as Short Round :)
What a great story. To have Harrison and Spielberg there when he got an Oscar is just amazing. The images and thoughts that were running through their minds. Wow
People have said the Oscars have lost its cache over the years with audiences. In a way they are right. However you can tell it still means SO much to Ke Huy Quan. As long as he gets more roles, trailers and posters will forever introduce him first as “Academy Award Winner…” and that must be every actor’s dream.
This year I feel he and others brought the Oscars back. Last year, I thought Will Smith (and the lack of support for Rock) killed any goodwill left over.
The best Oscar I’ve ever watched, it felt real and positive, not snooty like it usually is, actors just one upping one another. But this one felt positive. Congratulations to Ke he deserves it, he is so wholesome and humble, he is a real one. My daughter and i were so emotional cuz he was so genuine, and so happy and grateful. It was so nice to see. So happy for him.
He is my favorite winner of that night because not only was he so grateful to be acknowledged as the amazing actor he is, but he was excited for everyone and that little hug from Harrison ford was my favorite part of the show. And my parents were in a refugee camp (my oldest brother being born there) and to see someone who has a similar background to mine achieve something as big as an Oscar after decades of wanting to work as an actor and fulfilling his dream is so inspiring. I wish him nothing but future success
I watched his acceptance 3+ times because it is so magnificent and heartfelt. His sheer gratitude and appreciation makes me cry with joy. When I saw EEAAO, I saw it on the plane, and told everyone I came in contact with that day what incredible movie it was and how delighted I was by everyone's performances. He deserved the Oscar 100%.
He lived a life like his character in Everything Everywhere All At Once. So happy for him. He is proof that if you want something with all your heart this whole universe will make it happen.
By the time I first saw him in a film almost 40 years ago, my family had adopted my little brother (from South Korea, not Vietnam). In a Midwestern suburb, we stood out. Our parents taught us the importance of normalizing our family and fighting for our brother to be accepted as one of us. And then I saw Short Round on the big screen, and then Data a couple years later: Americans loved Ke Huy Quan. Representation is critically important for all of us. (And God, I'm so happy for him!)
I'm so, so happy for him. He's so honest and expresses so much gratitude towards things that other actors and actresses take for granted. Even when he's on a talk show, he'll thank the host for just inviting him on.
Ke Huy Quan is truly deserving of winning that Oscar, his performance as Waymond is incredible and heartfelt. Hearing his story is inspiring and I hope he continues to get more roles.
I honestly have never been so happy about a comeback story. No drug problem or personal issues, just a great actor and great guy who finally is getting the respect and recognition he's always deserved
Most of immigrants can relate to Ke Huy's story. We came here to achieve that American dream. I'm so glad that he won. His speech was emotionally touching. What a remarkable comeback!
I’m so proud of Ke Huy Quan, growing up as a Vietnamese American, I can relate when he mentioned that you don’t share certain emotions with each other But to see how proud his family are of him now, makes everything worth it! ❤
When Brendan said “sometimes the phones just stop ringing.” And now compared to their life changing roles the Whale and Everything Everywhere All At Once. It is just the boost to their careers that opens so many opportunities for them. I know their previous movies are terrific! But I know there’s always that one film that changes your career a bit more. I’m so happy for Ke and now he has such a big win in his career I hope more opportunities keep coming for him. ❤
I’m the same age as Ke, and as an Asian American kid growing up in the 80s, absolutely connected with him in The Goonies!! I am so very happy for him as an actor, but even more overjoyed to see what a wonderful human he is!! I really hope this win will bring him more roles!!
This man has such range, not enough people talk about how he is a BLACKBELT in martial arts and an action director on well known movies! I’m so happy he’s getting recognition, and can’t wait wait to see what he does next.
His story includes refugee, immigrant, child star, working w the best directors, then the roles and opportunities dried up for a couple of decades, but he stayed involved and worked behind the scenes, wondering if a new chance for what he loves doing will come again, and boy did it come big time. To work w Michelle Yeoh for starters, what a comeback! Pat Morita would be so proud and happy for this years recognition for AA. There are other Asian actors w recent experience, they have the talent and looks. But Ke Huy Quan has this pure energy of love of his work, appreciation for his life journey and everyone in it. It is touching and moving and wholesome. 🥂cheers to holding on and dreams coming true. See you on the silver screen Ke! Thanks for the inspiration.
I remember watching the Everything Everywhere... and geeking up when I recognised short-round so much older but with the same entusiasm, adventure and kindness. Short-round is up there with Marion and Indiana's dad as one of the best characters of the Indiana Jones franchise.
Disney, if they are smart, but I'm not holding my breath given what they've done to the Star Wars franchise and Willow, has a sure fire hit with a Indiana Jones spin off staring Short Round now all grown up. I mean all the Indy fans already know him from the Temple of Doom movie and it's like him taking over the torch from Indy who is now in retirement. Disney will get the Indy fans, 80's nostalgia fans and not to mention the BILLIONS of Asian fans of Ke Huy Quan all over the world. Disney just better hire some good writers and not the ones who worked on Star Wars or Willow. No WOKE shits, just good old fashion adventure and fun like the 80s movies! I've been following his whole journey all throughout this award season and each time he got an award and got into one of his signature tearjerking acceptance speeches, I would ugly cry with him. @@ifyouonlyknew811 It still is a comeback for Brendan but yeah you right.
yes both of them are so so deserving of this!!!! made me cry watching them win🫶🏼🫶🏼
We call people stars because of their ego and talent and certain qualities - but he is a star because of the LIGHT he has along with his talent. He is so pure. He is a beautiful person.
Such a humble and gracious person. His acceptance speech was so raw and genuine and also his joy 😊.can't wait to see him in Loki next season
don't tease me like that. I don't deserve that much goodness
His positive energy is unmatched
Is anyone else mourning the years of Ke in leading man roles that we were all robbed of? He seems genuinely kind and talented but my god, he's incredibly handsome too.
People say he is lucky. I think he made his own luck by working hard, appreciating what he had and making the best of it
It is more luck than skill though and I say that as no disrespect to him.
@@TheRebellefleur27 It is hilarious you use that story which I already knew which that story in itself is like Mega Millions lucky which was completely
unrelated to his acting ability or skills.
#1. A major motion picture is in your area hiring for a major role that he happens to live near
#2. They are only hiring an Asian actor for this part
#3. His brother wants to tryout and he goes to help him and not to tryout
#4. He gets asked to tryout for the part
#5. Out of all the people they could pick they pick you
The reason why this is still luck is every great actor or actress there is always another one who would do a great job so it still takes luck to get the part and especially did for him at that time.
Obviously they could have hired another good Asian actor to play Shorty.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
You think his good acting skills made all 5 of those come true?
@@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants Could you name just 1 Asian actor who you think could have done Ke's role in EEAAO?
He seems like such a kind and humbled human being. If we have known him for nothing else, I'd appreciate him for at least that! His energy is boundless and thats what makes me feel good about life.
He has worked so much to be where he is now. I cannot believe some people believe he doesn't deserve it.
No when you get awards based on your race or skin color it’s not deserved and is dameaning
@@startrekmaniac1701 ...good thing he didn't get it for any of those reasons, then! 👍
@@questionhound that’s exactly why he won. The Oscar’s have become the minority awards. I couldn’t tell if I was watching the Oscar’s or naacp awards
@@startrekmaniac1701 it’s because the voting body is not just all white old people anymore. Stop crying already.

This man's life is an academy award winning movie.
They should make a movie based on his life.
Seeing Ke Huy Quan speak makes me really happy and emotional. When he speaks I see a beautiful soul embodying
humility dignity grace and gratitude and this is so freaking beautiful and wholesome ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
same here😊
He was phenomenal in EEAAO. I can't believe he couldn't get any roles for 30+ years in Hollywood and it took an INDIE movie for him to get recognition. Will forever know him as Short Round :)
It was around 2002 his IMDB skips all the way to a small role in an animated film 'Finding Ohana' 2021.
Dude is literally the face of Hollywood right now. And rightfully so! So happy for this man and hope he gets much more work
What a great story.
Ke was GREAT in EEAAO! Any film that gets him onboard will be lucky to have him, Oscar or not!
I think the Oscar’s don’t mean anything if you are not in the movie industry but it means everything to those in the industry.
Yes, having "award winner" attached to your name or even just "award nominated" is such a big thing, the credibility it gives
@@LinusN1887 last year the Oscars lost it's moral highground and Northstar
The best Oscar I’ve ever watched, it felt real and positive, not snooty like it usually is, actors just one upping one another. But this one felt positive. Congratulations to Ke he deserves it, he is so wholesome and humble, he is a real one. My daughter and i were so emotional cuz he was so genuine, and so happy and grateful. It was so nice to see. So happy for him.
This world needs people like this SOOOOOOO much now. He is pure humble joy and kindness.
I watched the movie on a plane too lol😭
I also watched it on a plane, literally sobbing in my seat
Couldn't have happened to a nicer or more genuine person. The entire cast of this movie got their flowers, all of them so richly deserve.
How can you not love this guy
I’m Black and Vietnamese. He made me along with Michelle’s wins, made me cry with joy. He is a sweet man. Was a refugee too.
I'd gladly admit I've watched every Ke Huy Quan interview the past year. So happy for his success, so inspiring.
Hi Audra, on the off chance you were not aware, may I also recommend the short lived series, 'Together We Stand'?
Gary Glitter liked to adopt Asian boys too
I had an American teacher that adopted 2 kids from Korea too.
I'm so, so happy for him. He's so honest and expresses so much gratitude towards things that other actors and actresses take for granted. Even when he's on a talk show, he'll thank the host for just inviting him on.
He just radiates soo much love and positive energy. This win and all his accolades from this year are soo well deserved.
Ke Huy Quan is truly deserving of winning that Oscar, his performance as Waymond is incredible and heartfelt. Hearing his story is inspiring and I hope he continues to get more roles.
I can’t watch an interview of his without sobbing ugly happy tears. He deserves all of his success. What an amazing human being ❤
What a Humble man. Appreciative and thankful for an opportunity to work and be heard. "They see you" CONGRATULATIONS!
Much respect to James Hong for being one of the actors who paved the way for these Oscar winners Ke and Michelle.
Help. Why did people flee from Vietnam? I wasn't born that time. What was tbe story
I’m so proud of Ke Huy Quan, growing up as a Vietnamese American, I can relate when he mentioned that you don’t share certain emotions with each other
But to see how proud his family are of him now, makes everything worth it! ❤
I hope he gets lot more roles going forward.
He will be in The Electric State with Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown, etc. Will be released in 2024.
I love how very sincere & honest he is. It's what making me rooting for him.
DISNEY DONT F THIS OPPORTUNITY UP!
@@BestoftheBest-oz4ei Your big idea is as original as making a sequel of the Goonies with Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman and Ke Huy Quan. There are probably 1000 people in Hollywood who already thought about how to capitalise these IPs now that Ke Huy Quan has become a star. What type of woke shit you don't want? Like the new Predator sequel with a native American female lead or Top Gun: Maverick having a team of very diverse and inclusive pilots. Which one of these great movies you don't want?
Worked on set in many starter roles and respects the crew - Bro what a king!

I cannot put into the words the joy I feel for Ke Huy Quan! He was my favorite in Indianna Jones & Goonies. His role in EEAAO is one of the best performances and character story I have ever seen in any movie. His art has truly inspired many generations and will continue to do so. What a true, genuine, honest and so down to earth human being, this guy is . He is really a Hollywood Icon!!! My hat's off for you Ke Huy Quan!!!
I'm just so proud of Ke. We both have similar childhood. Seeing him win an Oscar as an Asian meant a lot to me. Never give up your dream.
No one is more deserving at this time than Ke Huy Quan.
This is something that we should be doing more. Celebrating with a humble person who has overcome personal struggles and is living their best lives. We need more of this in the world now more than ever. Congratulations to you and yours, Ke. You deserve it.
My husband and I grew up as Goonies being our favorite movie. Over the years during our marriage we would reminisce and wonder and hope when Data or Shortround would act again. Big fans. So overjoyed at his return to being back in in front of the camera. ❤️💗❤️💗
You have our love, Ke! i did not recognize him until the media mentioned he was the child actor in Hollywood movies. instantly, i was transported back to the 80's-90's. i remember him. nostalgia runs deep and i'm grateful for that. we used to live in simpler times.
I've been following his whole journey all throughout this award season and each time he got an award and got into one of his signature tearjerking acceptance speeches, I would ugly cry with him.
God damn, his comeback story (and Brendan Fraser's) feels exactly like what he said onstage at the Oscars : it's straight out of a movie. Directed by Steven Spielberg for good measure. With a final cameo with Harrison Ford for the climax !
I'm tearing up just typing these words ...
I'm so happy for him in this moment, not just for him, but for the living symbol of hope to people like me, filmmakers who haven't had their time to shine yet, that he became this past year since the launch of the miraculous Everything Everywhere All At Once !
And now I can't wait for the sequel Everybody Everytime All Over the Place !
That's gonna keep him busy for a next job.
(Although we'll see him very soon in American Born Chinese and Loki season 2, both of which I'm very excited for).
He is so full of gratitude and makes a point of always thanking people, it’s heartwarming to see this
Ke is so happy and joyful , he appears to be happy and cheer everyone around him. He didn’t give up . I am so proud as a fellow Asian.
He is so so humble and that's why we love him. I hope this wont be a one time thing and he will get what he has always strived for in the future.
This short interview brought me to tears. Just like his Oscar’s speech. Lol. Ugh!
I never in a million years would have thought I'd see Shorty winning an Oscar. I remember always wondering what happened to him and not knowing how to look it up as a kid and then out of the blue, I hear about Ke coming out of retirement for this new movie and I knew I needed to see it. Ke, you're an amazing human. Keep being you, and hopefully, you go nowhere but to the top
OMG! 😭🥰 CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
This made me cry...
Why he shines so much? what an incredible man.
Omg I was crying!!!!! 😢😢 He worked so hard to get to where he is today and he is a national treasure ❤❤ He is blazing the trail for many other Asian Americans in Hollywood!!
Ke makes me proud to be a Vietnamese in a foreign land. We are honest and hard working people, and we hope to be accepted with love and grace the way Ke lives his life.
It's your land. It's your home.
He’s not Vietnamese. Vietnamese forced Chinese people like him out. Nothing to be proud of.
Well, Ke is 100% Chinese ethnicity. His parents (both from Chinese families) were actually foreigners in Vietnam. That's why they didn't stick around in Vietnam.
@@The_Art_of_AI_888 That is not true! Many left Vietnam for a better life, especially after Saigon fell and the communists took over. He is Vietnamese Chinese as he was born and raised in Vietnam until 8. You are NOT defined by just your ethnicity only. I'm sooooooo proud of him and I don't even know him personally. Me and my family and friends grew up with him.
Thank you for covering this story in this way. The story of an immigrant, which is so embedded in the fabric EEAAO, is the life story of so many. As an Asian American, I've been really dissatisfied with the coverage (or lack thereof) of the historic wins of this film and its Asian cast in the mainstream media. I needed this win. I was invested in this win and it felt largely glossed over with the headlines being about Hugh Grant being incredibly rude to his red carpet interviewer or Lady Gaga helping a fallen photographer.
