- The brainchild of head writer Steve O'Donnell, "Connie Plescoe" was portrayed by then-Late Night Assistant to the Producer/Researcher Mary Connelly, who's currently Executive Producer of "Ellen."
Mary to me in 2016: "I had no influence on Connie Plescoe. I believe it came from the mind of Steve O'Donnell. It was based on the fact that there was a network exec who seemed to be pregnant forever."

Postscript: Mary's ad in "The Hollywood Reporter," February 21-23, 1997, celebrating Dave's then-15 years in late night television.
Paul's true value shown in the "she's starting to show" quip. Brilliant
"It's more bulky than heavy."
Paul never went to the meetings!
Mary Connelly played some of the funniest characters ever on the show and she and Dave seem to really enjoy doing bits together.
Thanks for the work and wonderful compilation of an ongoing bit that may have been otherwise largely forgotten. I'm probably not the only one who was anticipating the payoff of a "live feed" birth from the hospital, which never came, or some other closing final twist.
I suspect the months-long writers strike in 1988 hampered some long-term scenarios. And thanks!
I was in the audience for the last clip (Sept 7, 1988 - e1030). Dave wasn't himself that night (a lot of 33:24 ...) and I don't think it helped Robert Klein either. Great performance by Sinead O'Connor though. Congratulations on your amazing stewardship, Don. While it was an average show, I would love to revisit the rest of e1030 for the memories!
I love this. Don't forget the ladder, Connie.
"...it seems he's a little allergic to cold duck straight out of the bottle."
I don't know why I find that so funny, but I'm glad Dave did as well.
Could Mary Connelly have been any more adorable?
"Vinnie has a lathe in the basement."
as a 17 year old high school junior I din't realize this was a bit until the December appearances
Don't feel bad; as a dude in his 50s, I didn't realize it might be a bit until she went up the ladder!
"Any day now..."
"3 or 4 dogs with the works .. and scream myself horse."
Jerry Vale's made her feel right at home.
At first I thought she was pregnant, but checked the dates and they kept going and going.
I'd love to see Dave teaching a group of children how to break windows properly
3.11 for Workgroups
3:00 for some reason, I feel as though Paul Shaffer is used to these kind of gigs.
I know Dave quit drinking and after the bypass he quit seegars too.
That baby is 33 now.
Nope. Still pregnant.
33 year old pillow.
The fact that ham was mentioned more than once makes me think they used a ham for her baby bump and the husband and friends really tried to flush it down the toilet.
A ham would have been too heavy.
Timmy Smith boy is he good...lol lol
November 25, 1987. Is that where the joke came from?
Which joke?
It would have been awesome if they had Connie throwing footballs into a garbage can.
I thought that was Mary Connelly???
Nobody reads my descriptions.
@@dongiller I do, Don
@@katiezee2 So you’re the one. :)
@@dongiller ahahah
I realize that Mary wasn't in fact preggo let me just state for record that there is no human body as beautiful as one that contains a child!
Right, buddy. Right, right, right. We men care about nothing but kittens and butterflies.
