  • Avatar is a science fiction epic adventure from director James Cameron. It follows the story of Jake Sully, a former marine who is thrust into an alien world and tasked with helping the Na'vi people of Pandora understand the ways of Earth. The stunning visuals, groundbreaking CGI, and thrilling action sequences create a captivating journey that is sure to stay with viewers long after the credits roll.
When Avatar first released, everyone was rushing to cinemas to watch this film. You were lucky if you could find a ticket for the movie. Even most cinemas were selling tickets for weeks ahead. With this madness, just in a few months, Avatar became the highest grossing movie of all time. If you look at the most earned movies list, you'd see movies about superheroes, stories from books, and "Furious 7". It's a bit weird to see an original movie in the first place. With its weird success, critics about it started to rise. Was it actually a good movie, or only its hype brought it to the first place. When it was released, almost all the viewers loved this film. Even it nominated as the best movie at the Oscars. However, so many people were thinking that it's just an ordinary fantasy film. Just a few months after the release, the hype around Avatar slowly faded. On top of that, even though it's the most earning movie ever, the fanbase of Avatar has never been close to superhero movies or Harry Potter series. James Cameron said that Avatar has only one film. With new movies, its fanbase will grow. He is probably correct. It's impossible for a film to stay relevant for 13 years.
Avatar is telling the story of Jake, a soldier with a spine injury. Jake was sent to Pandora after his twin brother died. Then we learn that his consciousness can be transferred to these body, called "Navi". Normally, they had make it for Jake's brother. But after his death, instead of throwing millions of investment, they ask Jake to come Pandora, and control his brother's avatar. Normally, our main character can't use his legs, but in his avatar's body, he could run after all those years. Watching that scene always puts a smile on your face. They expressed his happiness and excitement so naturally. In 22nd century, humans discovered Pandora planet, and its precious metal unobtanium, which is worth millions of dollars. They wanted to extract unobtanium from the planet, but the locals didn't let them. Jake has 2 missions. Help the scientists, and deporting Navis from their habitat. Everything starts after Jake got caught by natives, and started to live with them. First, he was doing this for his mission, but after spending time with them, he started to understand Navis. Avatar is telling the classic story of foreigners trying to capture locals' wealth.
The movie has so many revolutionary points. But before, let's talk about its weaknesses. The most criticised side of Avatar was its super flat and predictable scenario. When watching this film, you can tell what will happen after almost each scene. And the dialogues were so shallow that we can't learn more about the characters. Many people say that Avatar stole its scenario from "Dances with wolves", and "Pocahontas". Even though they look identical, I think that's mainly because of the cliche scenario of Avatar. And this side of the film, might even help it achieve that much gross in the box office. If the story is easy to understand, that means there's more people out there who can watch it. By the way, the director James Cameron spent so much money on the second movie, that it must be at least the top 5 highest grossing movie of all time to cover its costs.
Okay, the easy story might be a major source of its success, but it isn't the only reason. Avatar's visual effects were the best of its time. Even better than most of the new superhero movies. The crazy nature of Pandora and the 3D effects, bring you into the movie. Obviously, it wasn't the first 3D movie. But the camera angles and movements make you feel yourself inside the film.
Overall, I think Avatar was a great box office movie of its time. It did what a movie for a general audience should do and deserved the first place.

I really like Avatar and I can’t wait for the sequels.
Something I must ask, though, with the amount of times that the first Avatar has been rereleased, what do you think it is that makes people keep going back to the theaters to see it? Especially when Avatar is on streaming platforms, DVDs, and Blu Rays?

I really loved watching the first movie.
I think there wasn't a second movie with such good CGI when Avatar came out (at least I think so). That's why it's in a different place in people's hearts. I think that's why it has a loyal audience.
Also people were looking forward to the second movie, and it soon became the highest-grossing film of 2022.

I think that's because its 3D or IMAX versions in theaters give you a way better experience than watching it on a computer screen or TV. And considering Avatar is all about visuals, people prefer going to the cinema for it. And there's people going Avatar just for feeling the 2009's experience again, nostalgia, you know 😄

    Imo both.
It's a masterpiece looking at it (visuals)/ watching it.
It has very interesting and important themes (environment/ nature, connection, colonialism). Storywise it is okay (cliché, but it works).
