  • A lot of debate about the proper way to Tow with your Tundra. Here I explain Tow/Haul mode and describe how it should be used with the transmission and when it is supposed to be used. I also review of appropriate use of Drive, S4, and S5 and discuss engine braking available in lwer gears beginning in S3.

    I agree with you on everything. I've got a 2020 trd pro and I had a tranny cooler added to mine because of temps. Between the cooler and manually shifting the truck to 4th the temps stay in a very safe place. 4th gear I believe is 1 to 1 direct which is why it tows great in that gear. By keeping it in say 4th gear it allows the torque convertor to stay locked which decreases temps big time. If you move it to 5th it does the same thing and keeps the tranny from hunting for gears which keeps those temps down.
    The reason it has 6th is so when you're towing you can leave it in 6th and as soon as you hit a hill you can bump It into 5th and then 4th. When you clear the hill bump it back to 6th and it's just like having it in drive. The reason is if you're in drive and then move it to to manual mode it automatically goes to 4th gear which may be too low moving down the highway which will Rev the engine too high. When I tow I automatically put it in 6th to start and manually control it from there.

      It is very important is to get one with Sway Control or to get added Sway Control with the WDH hitch. I find for a load your size (and mine), GVWR 600lbs, the Round bar was (2 points ) vs the trunnion (4point) Fastway E2 to be very efficient. The key is to make sure you have adequate pressure restored to the front end when you set it up. Fastway has a great video on how to do this.

I use Tow Haul and generally tow in S5, up or down depending on terrain. In S5, the transmission rarely downshifts doing 65mph. I have the TRD exhaust and it purrs. I love this truck. Respectfully I have to disagree with you and here’s why. I have a 2020 TRD Pro with a very loud OEM exhaust which reverberates off the trailer. I tow a 5,000lb trailer on the interstate several times a year. Usually it’s a 12-24 hour stint. Tow haul mode is wonderfully on the surface streets and around town as it really prioritizes gearing and throttle response. However on the highway it’s a hindrance as on the slightest incline or slightest bit of Hadwin it instantly downshifts to 3000-3500 RPMs it doesn’t upshift quickly enough even when leveling back off on flat ground. I turn off tow haul mode and it keeps the RPMs lower and the truck has no problem lugging up over an incline at 2500 RPMs as long as you stay out of the throttle and can tolerate a 5 mph speed loss. I also put it in S5. Not only does it obviously limited from going into 6th but it absolutely prioritizes maintaining 5th gear over the standard shift algorithm. This all works really well on cruise control at 70 mph. If there’s any hill it will start surging between fourth and fifth trying to go back to 5th to maintain it. At that point I drive it manually turning cruise control off and can keep it in 5th gear up most hills doing 68 to 72. Now all that being said this is why I’m getting a Harrop supercharger as manually working the gas pedal for 12+ hours is very fatiguing as is listening to a tuned exhaust above 3000 RPMs. I want to maintain 2500 at 70 mph on cruise control no questions asked on most interstate inclines. I guess we shall see🤷🏻‍♂️

      The manual specifically says use Tow/haul (over a certain weight) to avoid damaging the transmission. Not using it, is like lugging a manual transmission and it’s not good. Sometimes, mine refuses to up-shift and I need to put it in manual mode. I don’t mind…14 years and zero repairs on my 2008 Tundra. I tow much more than 5,000 pounds too. I’ve got a 9,000 camper that’s 33 feet long and I can hardly tell it’s back there. A camper is much different than a regular trailer, because of the wind it catches.

    Oof. There is no “AI” in this transmission control module. It is all deterministic.
    “S” stands for sequential, not “shift.” The transmission is a direct shift transmission meaning it can skip gears to get to the right gear. Moving it into sequential, when you’re towing, will ensure the transmission does not skip gears. This is why “S6” exists.
    The reason the transmission moves into “S4” when you switch it to sequential shift is because 4 is the direct, 1:1 gear ratio, and the gear you should always be towing in. If you want to heat up your transmission, tow in S5 or S6.

    • @kedrevs4037
      @kedrevs4037  2 месяца назад

      yes "sequential " is correct, having vehicles where the "S" stood for sport or or shift gets me to say the wrong word sometimes.
      The Owners's manual disagrees with you on mode selection for towing and clearly recommends towing in D unless you are frequently climbig and descending hills. Additionally I can personally verify that towing in S4 will do little to nothing to change trans temps unless you are climbig and descending hills frequently.

    • @leje-zj4dr
      @leje-zj4dr 2 месяца назад

      Page 210, section 4-1 for my 2020 reads (just like my 2014 did):
      “To maintain engine braking efficiency and charging system perfor-
      mance when using engine braking, do not use the transmission in D.
      Transmission shift range position must be in 4 in the S mode.”
      As for heat, at constant load, a higher gear will increase transmission temps and (potentially) reduce engine temps. In the system, a transmission is a torque multiplier for the wheels. I haven’t found a way to change the laws of thermodynamics.

    • @kedrevs4037
      @kedrevs4037  2 месяца назад

      @@leje-zj4dr I have the same manual. Engine braking is not available above S3 because S4 and S5 don't cancel cruise control. S3 does.
      The preferred method for long stretches of towing at constant speeds is the in D with Tow/Haul mode. The AI shift will still allow engine braking to occur on subtle declines, even in 4th or 5th gear without gear hunting and heating up the transmission.
