Gen 1 GS 300 was also non vvti and had thicker rods too... that's why it's better to turbo that model. You also don't have to worry about the camshaft sprocket leaking oil or the vvti solenoid going out, or the expensive ABS/ master cylinder going out.

I have an 01’ GS300 and it’s the most reliable and comfortable car for being 20+ years old. But she Heavy as hell with the 12 cows worth of leather inside the interior.
People always say that just because they've heard someone else say that. Lol. Meanwhile every car driving around you weighs the same, or more. For an example a 2022 BMW 3 series sedan weighs 4,000lbs, '22 Honda 3,600lbs, '22 Camry 3,600lbs, '22 Mercedes 4,400lbs. Meanwhile a 2nd Gen GS300 that's 20 plus years old weighs 3,600, and the 600 comes from the 2JZ, hence why it's a beast at making power and lasting long because it's a solid piece of cast iron!!!
Been telling ppl for years!!! The ge vvti has a better flowing head than the non vvti, I kept the 10:1 CP in my setup and got a garret 3776r. Building the ge literally beats buying a gte if you’re on a budget. Also don’t forget the head gasket. You can simply just buy a stock gte head gasket and it’ll work, you can also machine your head to keep compression cause it will lose compression due to the thicker gasket. And either shim your accumulators or get an upgraded valve body for your transmission and turn up the line pressure and a trans cooler then boom your transmission can handle 650whp easily
Same it was my dream car almost bought a 155k one for 8k. But then I found a mint gs300 for 9k at 87k miles so i had to snatch that instead . Now I'm in love with it such a smooth ride and beautiful car. The is300 is gorgeous as well
Im doing a gs300 naT build currently. Im going with a brand new in box GTE shortblock from Toyota just cus its honestly the same price to buy new as it is to swap in forged internals n get it machined but this way u have a 0mile oem toyota GTE setup guaranteed to handle anything thrown at it reliably. Then building the GE vvti head with BC valves, valvesprings n retainers n BC 264 cams (or Kelford or GSC) im also running a Pulsar Gen3 GTX3584 DBB T4div.0.85A/R Turbo on a SPA cast topmount turbo manifold, Turbosmart HG45 wastegate, Deepmotor FFIM, Treadstone TR1035 Intercooler, ID 1050cc injectors, DW brushless 450lph fuel pump, -8feed -6 return, itll be easily 650whp once tuned n assembled. Will be running a Link Fury G4X ecu
The plus side about the 2JZ-GE version is that you can have better exhaust flow which will spool the turbo up faster! Dont need to pay 8-10,000$ for a GTE when the GE cost 1,500-2,500$ for the motor.
I bought mines for 3k with 160k miles it’s still at 185k I’m getting to know this car and I didn’t kno what was under the hood until I seen the 2jz-gte so I’m kinda exited for this project
Get a 400, put the thick rods off a junk early gen 1uz, or use the the 7-800 dollar 800-1200hp 9-12k RPM capable rods from xat, or run the stock rods to 500-600 and still be relatively safe. You can also run nitrous on these engines, an intensely high amount if you regap rings when you do rods ontop of being able to supercharge these. You don't have to be worried about low end power like you do in the 2jz so you aren't just limited to turbos. Cores for the UZ's are cheaper than 2jz cores, you can find the early gen parts for far cheaper, overall its just a better budget option for building on outside of the fact its not as supported a platform and running turbos is a nightmare with how tight the headers are and how tight it is getting around the accessories. Log manifolds are essentially the only option. without crazy fab work. You don't need the xat bbk, I have it, but its very much not a necessity and on the early models, 98-01 you have a smaller sized master so your booster is more likely to go out, and it WILL go out. The stock brakes are very good, and ls400 brakes or supra brakes are far cheaper, very effective, heck in the case of the ls400 brakes they weigh LESS than stock, still give you 4 pots, and don't oversize the pistons to the point where your booster fails prematurely like mine literally did literally yesterday, and unless you get the rear kit, you get too much front lockup too unless you proportion or run differing brake pads. You're far better off installing an LSD for grip for the price you spend, as these things are open diff, and changing your rear bushings and adjusting geometry so you don't wheel hop, because you will stock setup. Ntm you WILL need to modify the stock transmission to hold anything over 350-400hp. Shim your accumulators, raise line pressure, and ease into the 2-3 shift I've seen 700hp before they grenade. Still would recommend rebuilding the trans at those power levels with the aftermarket sprag clutch for 3rd and some upgraded clutches aswell, or idk, just going r154 or cd009? Maybe turbo400 if you're deadset on auto? Ntm, the 400 will be much more fun stock than the 300 so you don't have to mod it immediately and the supporting mods can be done slowly at first and still keep you interested.
